We already know that the Animal Crossing series has a connection with Nintendo's amiibo range – in fact, it even got a bunch of cool amiibo cards in 2015 – and we also know that Animal Crossing: New Horizons will utilise these NFC-powered products.
However, with New Horizons just over a month away from release, we still don't know exactly how Nintendo plans to use amiibo in the game – so we thought it might be a good idea to look back at how this particular series has been enhanced via both amiibo and (going even further back in time) e-reader cards during the GameCube era.
Sit back and watch as Zion takes you through Animal Crossing's past, present and future – in card and plastic figure form!

I really hope the villagers will stay Permanently in our town by scanning from Amiibo cards.
It would be highly regrettable if the games didn't utilise the large collection of Animal Crossing series amiibo cards available. There were hundreds, and were useful in both of the 3DS titles.
Given the getaway island resort focus of New Horizons, I'm hoping that the amiibo cards will let you invite a villager or special guest to the island, much like with New Leaf. I have specific villager cards that I'd love to invite to my island.
Also expect hundreds of islands called Koholint. It'll be as original as naming your town Hyrule.
Please invite villagers. My Moose card is useless if I can't have him in my town
I hope they don't lock villagers behind amiibo cards again. That's the only thing I'm hoping for..
I don't mind as much if they're crossover villagers (like the Zelda or Splatoon ones) I just hope it's only those kind of villagers locked behind amiibo.
Sprocket seems to be in the base game so maybe they won't be locked behind amiibo.
Hopefully in no substantial way. The Animal Crossing Amiibo cards are darn near the point of being physical lootboxes. The way they locked certain HHD items and villagers behind them in the NL Welcome Amiibo update was really crappy.
Sure, you could still attain the items through other people online, but you had to coordinate with them to pull up the villager who has the items you want's trailer in their game when you visit them.
Please none of this lootbox nonsense. Especially because online is no longer free on the Switch.
I have the amiibo cards for nearly all of my favourite characters. Would be great if you could scan a card and get that villager in your game again. I know some people like to be surprised with which villagers you get but when you have been playing for as long as I have, you already know which villagers you want (well, except if there are any new villagers 😃). Ozzie, Eugene, Melba and Rooney I am looking at you especially! Yes, I love the Australian animals (but then again, I am Australian myself). 👍
We are getting a proper Animal Crossing Direct soon so don't worry too much.
Another great video @ziondood! Your love for the franchise is contagious.
I hope the game has 100% Amiibo compatibility but all unlockables also obtainable through other means. Don't lock anyone out, just let us take a short cut if we have it.
Hoping the amiibo give crazy cool or at least useful bonuses - this is one time I feel bad for the retailers!
There is also the possibility of Nintendo reprinting the Amiibo Cards or creating new Animal Crossing Amiibo. Not that I would mind but I'm just pointing out the possibility.
Probably just by scanning them on the sensor.
Just let me add Punchy to my town and I'll be content.
Given we haven’t heard anything, I’m guessing Amiibo support has been cut like it was in SMM2. Which I’m fine with!
Great in-depth ... If someone wanted a rare villager and didn't have the card it would be hard to get that card as they are random and doubles inside the packs.
I think if they have a really big range in crossing and some you could use to be fare to new switch players that don't have the cards.
@YANDMAN The switch reads the same way with cards just like amiibo it reads the nfc tag inside.
People don't honestly still fall for that anticonsumer physical DLC fad, do they?
No regular villagers in NL were locked behind cards though? It's been a while since I used them, but I thought it was just the special characters visiting your campsite and selling unique items, and even then you could trade them/buy from other campsites.
The only amiibo-locked villagers I'm aware of were the Splatoon/Zelda/Sanrio ones.
@Harmonie Learn what lootboxes are.
@Manah Years later, when they released the RV cards, the only way to get those characters to move into your town was from the RV campsite. It was mostly (entirely?) villagers who were in previous AC games and not New Leaf before that point.
Hopefully amiibo support will be similar to the one in Welcome amiibo. That was one of the best amiibo supports I've ever seen, in my opinion.
Oh, and PLEASE let me re-use my dusty Animal Crossing amiibo cards!
@Roto13 From what I understand, lootboxes are characterized by content that is exclusively hidden behind RNG 'pulls' that you pay for with money/a limited in-game currency in which paying money gets you more of and puts you at an advantage.
Now, you'll see if you read my post I said these are "near" physical lootboxes.
The Animal Crossing Amiibo cards:
*Bring exclusive content (with the exception I mentioned above if you have online and set up coming to someone's town with the Amiibo card, a clear distinction, which is why I said "near" being a lootbox)
*Are paid for with real money.
*Come in packs where you have no idea which you're getting before paying.
Yes, there are distinctions. Yes, Amiibo cards are physical products. Yes, you can technically obtain the items just by linking up with someone online. Those are the reasons I said they are almost lootboxes. However, a lot of the same scummy characteristics of lootboxes are present, and while I'm not doubting that the ability to get these items from other people without paying is a significant difference versus normal lootboxes, it doesn't mean that this isn't still a rip-off that is using many of the same tactics.
Looks at entire Animal Crossing Amiibo collection.
They goddamn better be.
@Roto13
Oh right, the RV series. Those were so stupidly rare I forgot they existed.
That reminds me, I hope we get June back as a regular villager.
Lol! Maybe all amiibo will be supported and you can have Pokémon running around on your island...or wolf link as a pet.
@ShadJV Just a few days ago we saw the back of the download card which confirmed it supports amiibo. They're just keeping everything about the game under wraps recently, which includes how amiibo will work.
@SinnohGeek dang, they confirmed Amiibo support? Disappointing but thanks for the heads up.
@Luna-Harmony Obviously.
