Streets of Rage 4 has been in development for quite a while now, and while we're anxious to get our hands on it, as fans of the series we're happy to wait while joint developers Guard Crush Games, DotEMU and Lizardcube polish it to the Nth degree. The original Mega Drive / Genesis beat 'em ups are a classic trilogy and the last thing we want is a game which doesn't live up to them.
It's a tough assignment, although a recent demonstration at Montreal DemoNight (as brought to our attention by a tweet from Guard Crush) shows that things are coming along very nicely. The presentation was led with commentary from Cyrille Lagarigue, lead programmer on the game and co-founder of Guard Crush, and it showcased real gameplay footage of Adam Hunter, the latest character to be announced and a fan favourite we haven't seen since the original Streets of Rage:
Adam looks to be in good form after nearly 30 years since his debut, although you'll recall he also has his daughter Cherry to help out this time. Check out the entire presentation in the video below courtesy of Twitch streamer missharvey (be warned that it features some fruity language).
For fans of the series it's something of a relief to see the care and attention being lavished on every aspect of this sequel. It's one thing to get the music right (and let's face it, we doubt series veteran Yuzo Koshiro will drop the ball on that front - he's also backed up by a VGM supergroup this time, too), but it's the fusion of visuals, sound and gameplay which gives the Streets of Rage series its unique rhythm and feel.
We enjoyed our time with a build back in September and you can read all about our hands-on impressions of this third sequel. While you're waiting for a release date announcement, you might want to get in the mood by reading about the history of the series, too.
Looking forward to dealing out from justice in the shoes of Adam Hunter? Getting impatient for a release date? Unleash your grand uppers in the comments.

Need this can’t wait x x x x x x x x x x x
I'm still going to miss Skate, this is good though.
I'm little bit excited about this game... Only a little... MY PRECIOUS! BEERMONKEY LOVES MY PRECIOUS!.. Only a little bit...
Less trailers, more concrete information about the product .
Like when can you buy it, what wil it cost etc.
Switch version it is to play it on portable mode.
Input Lag is not an option on such a game.
For those looking for the segment on SOR 4, it's at about an hour and 51 minutes into the stream.
I don’t know if anyone carried on watching the stream after the Streets of Rage demo, but they showcased a really cool game called Rainbow Billy. The art style has clearly taken inspiration from Cuphead and it looks gorgeous! Would love that on Switch.
@KitsuneNight
Yeah this one is odd. Such a simple game that seems to be taking forever to get finished up.
Small team I guess.
Will this be the first time a daughter and daddy are playable in the same game?
I hope this game has online multiplayer. If Panty Party can have online MP then so can SoR4.
Any chance we can see it without some random woman talking over it?
Would be nice to just have a video instead of having to trawl through a lengthy, ultra low res video of some random woman in her kitchen wearing some headphones. What on earth this garbage anyway?
@DrDaisy well there’s Witcher 3.
Excited for the Panzer game! Forgot the last name...
@DrDaisy, there's Dead or Alive (Bass & Tina) and Dragon Quest V (the protag has a son & daughter who join the party later on) that I can think of from the top of my head.
@DrDaisy Mortal Kombat has Johnny and Cassie Cage ow and Jax with Jacqui briggs
@sword_9mm
I don't mind how long it's taking.
I am just getting tired of endless updates, that say nothing, other then yup its still being developed, alright.
Or announcements for announcements that announce nothing concrete.
I want specific details about the game.
The release date.
The price.
The install size.
I don't care about hype. I want a product i can buy or look in to .
@NinChocolate
Dragoon
@NinChocolate It's Panzer Paladin. I stumbled upon that one by chance as I searched through the video. Figuring out the name was tougher than I expected. I also thought it looked very good and it's one I plan to keep up with.
@Smashfan502 I haven't played much Smash Ultimate. I didn't even realize Chrome was a playable character (I thought he was a "shadow" character bor assist trophy), although that does remind me of Fire Emblem Warriors. As for Wendy and Bowser, while I also consider them to be related in that way, that doesn't seem to be the case anymore according to Shigeru Miyamoto.
@tc-senzei Thanks for the reminder. (I know how this could look and I want to assure you I'm not being sarcastic.)
@RR529 I forgot about Dead or Live for some reason.
@TYRANACLES I wondered if the little girl was playable.
Okay, so maybe the first beat-em-up of this kind then, although I wouldn't be surprised if there's some obscure foreign BEU that one or two people on here know about.
@Smashfan502 To be honest, I'm not even 100% certain what a "shadow" character is. I might have meant "spirit." It's past midnight and I'm starting to make less sense. Good night.
