The 11th Maximus Cup for Nintendo's battle royale game Tetris 99 has just been announced. This time around it's a special Lunar New Year point-stacking challenge. As usual, the players with the most points will receive 999 My Nintendo Gold Points.
The event will start on 30th January and runs until 3rd February. Below are the full details:
The event runs from 11 p.m. PT on Jan. 30 and ends at 10:59 p.m. PT on Feb. 3. To participate, Nintendo Switch Online members just have to play the Tetris 99 online mode during the contest period. Points will be awarded based on placements during each match, and at the end of the event the top 999 players with the most accumulated event points will each win 999 Gold Points** that can be used to help purchase games in Nintendo eShop.
If you'd rather play Tetris the old-fashioned way, you can always purchase the optional Big Block DLC, which adds several offline modes. There's also a physical version of the game now available that includes all of the DLC and a 12-month subscription to the Nintendo Switch Online service.

I'm going to game it
I'll be there but I don't like how the prize is awarded to those who've accumulated the most points. There will be at least 999 folk around the world who dedicate their whole weekend to this, giving the rest of us no chance.
A fairer system would be rewarding the 999 with the most points after a set amount of matches, say 20.

@OorWullie It's only a set number of winners per region, 999 in NA, and 99 in Oceania for me.
Your point stills stands though, it's rewarding grinding rather than skill.
I can't really think of a fairer way to do this though, lesser skilled player still have to grind more than highly skilled player to win.
@OorWullie While I don't exactly agree with your method, but I fully agree that most of the players will not achieve much participating in this. At least having a theme to unlock would be better (although I exclusively use the Gameboy theme ).
@San_D @OorWullie I agree, I like the themes more than the 0,00000001% chance of winning this 999 gold coins.
They recently added the unlockable themes from previous events to the theme store, and I'm finding it hard to hold on to my tickets for that 999 tickets badge.
Better get my rusty bones in motion and earn it quickly this time.
It's a great game. But I haven't played it much lately. First world problems. I have a job and thus money for more games than I have time to play.
Of course, on the other hand, that's a lot better than no job and no money to pay the bills. XD
Europe uses has been using different kind of system where every 100 points = one draw ticket. That way everyone has a chance of winning but you can increase your chances by playing more.
I consider myself a fairly decent Tetris player. I've probably played around 250 Tetris 99 games and the highest I've ever finished is 10th.

I prefer Europe's approach as it enables players to participate to a level they're satisfied with, instead of dedicating as much time as possible to ensure the reward.
It may not guarantee a reward if you dedicate all of your weekend to the event, but your odds will still be a lot better.

@OorWullie I don’t think it requires that much dedication, I’ve won 999 points in all three tournaments so far and I don’t play it that much. Probably a couple of hours each evening was all I was putting in to it.

@BulkSlash I'm curious on average how many event points you earned in-game to win the gold points. I'd prefer to have a specific goal I can target instead of aimlessly playing as much as I can
@SaKo I think it was around 1800 points each time. I'm in the UK so I don't know if a higher standard is needed elsewhere in the world (Japan probably is much tougher, all their players seem to be amazing!)
As many people have mentioned, anyone who just plays more matches will accumulate more points even if they're maybe not doing as well as someone who can't play ALL weekend, but did place well in the games they played in. I guess it would almost be more fair to set a point goal and then just randomly pick 999 players from those who reach that point level.
I didn't pay attention and thought once I hit 100 I'd get a special lunar new year theme. Womp womp. Nope. I agree that it should be highest points after 20 games. That's a fair way to do it.
