Update - Thu 23rd Jan, 2020 03:05 GMT: Kenji followed up this tweet a few days later by thanking everyone for showing their support for Skies of Arcadia and said he would forward all of the positive feedback to Sega directly, to let it know how passionate fans are about the game (via DualShockers).
Original story - Tue 14th Jan, 2020 04:30 GMT: Last April, we heard how the Skies of Arcadia producer Rieko Kodama wasn't particularly interested in creating a sequel and said in an interview with Kotaku that the GameCube release – Skies of Arcadia Legends – was more than enough.
It seems the producer's views don't necessarily reflect everyone's feelings who worked on the original Sega Dreamcast release, though. Kenji Hiruta, who is considered to be one of the "main devs" who helped create the hit JRPG back in the day, recently tweeted how he would really like to develop a sequel:
The original game was released on Sega's final console in October 2000 and was ported across to the Nintendo GameCube in 2002. It means the title is now nearly 20 years old.
In the same interview with Kotaku last year, Rieko mentioned how she was "very grateful" the original game had a special place in the hearts of those who had played it.

Never got to play the original. I'm sure the fans would like a sequel.
Please. Easily one of the greatest RPGs of all time.
Wow, this would be great if it ever happened. Never played the original, but I always heard great things about it. One of my childhood friends had a dreamcast, and I had a ps1 so i missed out on games like this.
That would have been a grand idea 15 years ago. It's too late now.
I would settle for a rerelease of the Gamecube version. It's so hard to find. Selling my copy is still one of my biggest gaming regrets.
A remastered and a sequel for Switch would be greatness. Bring it back Sega.
It's my all time favorite game, I would be beside myself if a sequel got announced. But I would also be beside myself for a straight port.
I feel like this is one of those old RPG's that is overrated by nostalgia that has passed it's opportunity for a sequel. Still, it has a cult fanbase so maybe there is some demand, I just wouldn't expect it to sell particularly well.
Put it on Kickstarter like Shenmue 3 and you will get funded in a heartbeat. Love this game
A sequel would fit the Switch like a glove
I don't remember if it was this or another GameCube game that was originally on DreamCast (I think one of the main characters' names was Mag or something), but I remember having a lot of trouble with the bizarre turn-based ship battle.
Update: It was Evolution Worlds. I think that was the game that made me so angry, I attacked people and had to spend a few months in a nuthouse. Not one of my proudest moments.
One of the greatest. Would love even a remaster, let alone a sequel.
No, don't give me false hope
Best RPG from SEGA of all time ... my Top 3: Skies of Arcadia, Grandia 2 and Phantasy Star Online <3
1 and 3 need a remake ;D Grandia 2 is already out on Switch <3
Dreamcast was like WiiU - So many AAA First Party Games on there, to push sales ... If the WiiU were more succesful, we might never saw Games like Splatoon or Bayonetta2. Like SEGA in the past, Nintendo tried to push the console with high quality games (shenmue, skies, rez, the sonic adventure series, pso on dreamcast / splatoon, tokio mirage, 3dworld and more on wiiu) but on both sides, that sadly didn't worked out as much as it should.
hope sega will port those gems someday over to switch as part of the sega ages lineup
PS: sorry for my bad english, it'S early in the morning, i need coffee hahaha
I only knew about this game because I played the original Valkyria Chronicles, where Vyse, Aika, and Fina made cameos lol. I used both Vyse and Aika as my main squad.
Do it. I have the Gamecube release and loved it, though never did finish it.
I’d love a remaster and sequel. A spiritual successor at the very least.
I just couldn't get into this game. It seemed alright until i got to the first air ship battle part then i couldn't get past it and quit. Plus i had way too many other gamecube games i was playing at the time and lost interest. I suppose i may have to give it another shot.
Just remaster the original! That'd be good enough for me.
If it's not Sonic or Yakuza, SEGA won't consider it worth bringing back, let alone investing in a sequel. Maybe we'll see a Skies of Arcadia mobile game; it happened for Crazy Taxi...
Never understood the love for this one. Characters were lame stereotypes and the random encounter rate was... intense. Not for me.
We need a port/remaster of the original first or the sequel will just flop. If you missed out on the DC or GC releases, you're out of luck as they're pricey RPGs and only so few gamers would pay to play them.
As for a sequel.....only IF you got as many people back as you could, including whoever wrote the story. Even then, I thought the original wrapped up the story just fine, so I would be unsure of a sequel...
@KayFiOS You'd think but both Sakura Wars and Streets of Rage are getting new games this year. I think we are seeing IP revivals from them, slowly but surly.
Not to mention I believe those Shenmue 1+2 ports sold very well I think.
Played the Gamecube version. It was a good game. Amazing unique setting, decent plot and fantastic ship to ship battle system. I remember it being a bit grindy and the standard battle system not being fantastic (it works but didnt make combat fun). I made it about 3/4 of the way through. Not FF quality but it had a similar charm to Tales of Symphonia.
Just make a remaster of the first one to start.
One of my all-time favorite games, so I would love to see a sequel sooner rather than later!
Get the original on the frickin' Switch
I'd love a sequel, I'd love a port of the first one with some quality of life features. Like a speed up button similar to Final Fantasy 9, 12 and Trails of Cold Steel. I played the Dreamcast version of SoA a couple years ago and your movement speed is painfully slow, especially climbing ladders in your home base. Every RPG needs a turbo mode. There's just too many to play and not enough time!
I really want to win the lottery, where is my article?!
Strongly. We really really want you to develop the sequel.
Yes, please! That was one of the best games from SEGA. It is so bad that all of the awesome games from SEGA are doomed to fail because people seem to be more interested in every garbage game from Sonic. Come on, the only reason why Sonic was so popular in the 90s was because of the character, and those 90s-Kids who are now adults still support the franchise out of nostalgia. That is all that Sonic has now.
I think when the last 90s-Sonic-kid dies then maybe we have a chance for a Skies of Arcadia-sequel.
The original was on the Gamecube. Bring the original to Switch. It would sell millions
@Kriandis
Technically the original was on the Dreamcast.
Remaster. Sequel. Make it happen.
Played the GC version few years ago and I loved it.
Skies of Arcadia, Valkyria Chronicles, and Shining Force III (Saturn) are my all-time favorite Sega games/franchises (honorable mention to Dragon Force, Panzer Dragoon Saga, and old school Phantasy Star 1-4). And yes, I'd absolutely love to see sequels and/or HD remakes of all these announced in the near future.
But here's the rub: even if they ever are, recent history shows that Sega most likely WON'T be the publisher.
Shenmue III had to be a Kickstarter. The upcoming Panzer Dragoon remake is being handled by a different company. Ditto the Phantasy Star Online 2 localization. If M2 weren't doing the honors we wouldn't have the entire Sega Ages lineup on Switch. Simply put, if you're a fan of just about any iconic Sega franchise NOT named Sonic, your money is being left on the table because Sega frankly doesn't care about or believe in any of their other IPs (or any console representation or compilations outside the Genesis, the representation of the company's glory days, aside from a few scattered Dreamcast ports). If they did we'd have seen a lot more of them since they left console-making after the Dreamcast, and they'd have been developed and published internally.
I'm not saying we should give up hope completely, but Sega's track record over the past two decades speaks for itself.
@wollywoo worth noting the random encounter rate was significantly decreased between the dreamcast original and the gamecube version.
@locky-mavo Yes please, also if they could expand the world ? More floating islands to discover and explore, more ship battles.
In a sense, it was the Black Flag of its time
@Kalmaro Find a way to play it dude, it's worth it.
@WCB Same here, really enjoyed it, never finished it, still have it. The turn-based battles seemed very active, with everyone seemingly in combat but missing when it wasn't their turn (I might have a slightly deformed idea of it, a lot of time has passed).
I'm actually playing through Legends right now and very close to finishing it, it's a great game... I don't about a sequel yet, but a remake would be appreciated for sure.
@Shambo
Yep, that's about right. The characters keep on battling enemies in the background. A nice little touch indeed.
The game is really up there with the greats once you play it. The problem is barely anyone has had a chance to experience it.
If this game had come out on PS2 it would likely be considered one of the best RPG's of all time.
Shame games like this, Powerstone, Canon Spike etc all faded away to time from coming out on a console that sadly didn't last long.
This lives forever as one of my favorite JRPGs, and is the darling of my Gamecube games. I would pay handsomly for a sequel or special edition re-release.
And I REALLY want them to do a remake!
And speaking of old jrpgs who owns Rogue Galaxy and Shadow Hearts now?
Those three are my favorite games from that era.
I haven't played the original, so selfishly would love a remake / remaster of that more than the original. But I think a sequel would be great for the Switch / JRPG lovers, so I would welcome that, too (I'd just pony up for a GameCube version; they're surprisingly expensive).
If this game gets created for Nintendo Switch, I will buy it day one.
It's like a top 10 JRPG easily. I have no idea what the hell ius Sega doing, not making ports
I'm trying not to get my hopes up, and failing.
Ahhh jeez, I played this game 20 years ago??? I still remember it more than some games I played in the past year or so. Sequel, remake, prequel, prefake, mrequel, freequake, whatever, just give me more of this series!!!
Skies of Arcadia is in my top 10 favorite games so I’d love a sequel and of course a remaster of the original. Maybe Nintendo could buy the IP and make it their Final Fantasy type series.
It's my favourite game of all time, so a sequel would be a dream come true. I'm not sure they could capture the magic from the first one, but I'm more than willing to let them try. I don't play as many jRPGs as I used to anymore, but I played through Skies 100% last year for my 11th time since I first got it.
Loved Skies of Arcadia on my cube.
One of the few GC games I'd be willing tie pay for on any virtual console.
I'm not sure a sequel would sell very well, since not many people played the original. It was on the Game Cube!
I just don't get it, Sega has great games, they should be porting them to every console that can handle them. It should be easy money.
Don’t get my hopes up NintendoLife!!
You won’t like me when I’m angry.
@Nintendo_Thumb
Same here, yet they’ll continuously spend money on horrible Sonic games. SEGA has been dead to me since the end of the Dreamcast.
@NoxAeturnus
I thought I lost mine about 6-7 years ago. When I looked online to replace it, it was going for around $300 used. I’m so glad I found it.
My brother did the same as you, and he did spend around $200 to get another one.
My regret was selling Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door. I may have been getting into the Xbox at the time and games having voice work and I just couldn’t be bothered to ‘read’ mountains of text on my tv anymore.
🤦♂️😞
@GrandScribe
I wish Nintendo would pull a Bayonetta 2 on Skies of Arcadia. I’d be fine with it being a Nintendo exclusive.
God this was a great ass game. Ship combat was always my favorite.
@Kang81 they could put Vyse, Aika and Fina in Smash Bros. as a trio like Pokemon trainer’s pokemon.
I think the game should get a remake first.
The base game is great but has some elements that didn't age favorably. Battle system and movement was slow, and there were high encounter rates even during some puzzle segments.
None of this sounds like an overhaul. I would really like to see them port it.
And we really want it too.
I haven't played Skies since it launched in 2000 on DC. I loved it then, but even at the time the game did not have a particularly engaging battle system. It was beautiful, the characters were charming and I actually really loved ship combat and exploration. I would definitely check out a sequel, but as other people have said just seeing this game running on modern hardware would be a start. Sega really has done a poor job in exposing potential players to their work after getting out of the hardware biz. Skies should have been ported to PS2 as well, where the JRPG market was huge.
This would be awesome. I loved flying the ships, hiring crew members with different bonuses, finding the bits to make that girls slime pet into better weapons, and the ship battles were a lot of fun. If they make a sequel, I really hope they update the mechanics combat mechanics. Its the first long game i ever beat and only the 3rd JRPG i ever played, so menu and turn based battles were still new and exciting for me then, but now its run its course, at least for me. Grandia 2 had a great one, people all over the map, timing, and interrupts. Maybe it could be something similar. Either way I'd be stoked and Switch just feels like a perfect match for SoA
Never played Skies of Arcadia, but I really want to.
Been hoping for this to get a port to a modern platform for a long time.
As I missed out on the original on Gamecube - could we get a port to Switch? Even a straight Gamecube version? The original on ebay looks rather expensive.
I would buy a remake and a sequel. Or just a re release.
A port would also be fine.
@NoxAeturnus same here. I should never have gotten rid of it. I'd love a port of the original.
Would be amazing! The switch needs MORE RPGs (despite having a lot already. We can never have too many!) and the original remastered with a sequel would only be good for the fans!
I have it on gamecube. It is on the top of my "I have to do it again" list. (Right now I'm on the very first Luigi's Mansion).
I’d settle for an he rerelease at this point.
@Fearful-Octopus if you ever get to play it - the Dreamcast version has superior sound compared to the gamecube. Otherwise the later game is better with more optional content, but as the music was something I really liked about the original I never quite got over how muffled and out of sync the music sounds (already in the first minute).
I tried to play it in GameCube. But the battles were sooooo slow, after a while I just gave up. It was cool tough.
Just start with a remaster with double speed and I'll buy it.
@Mr_Horizon Ok I will keep that in mind, thanks for the insight.👍🏻
I'd like a re-release of Legends at least since I never played it on the Gamecube. It got too pricey by the time I knew about it.
I need to drag my dreamcast out and play this...I've had it forever, just never got around to playing
@NoxAeturnus my dream cast version got ruined but I managed to find a second hand copy on gamecube about 14+ years ago and kept it
A reboot of the Gamecube release with improved everything would be stellar, but a sequel would be insane! One of the best RPG's of all time, one of the best soundtracks of all time and still looks great to this day, not to mention a unique magic system and genuinely compelling storytelling... man, if this actually happens, I want Monolith to handle it along with the original studio, in conjunction with a remake/remaster of Baten Kaitos. Gamecube didn't have many great RPG's, so let's celebrate two of the very best and get them on Switch!
I’d settle for a straight port of the original.
@RareFan Yeah, I now that. I still have the VMU game on my VMU for Dreamcast, and I still have the game.
I am saying that the Original game was ported to Gamecube, it needs to be ported to Switch....
SoA was an excellent JRPG game for its time.
I am one of the few that loved the random encounters, some games are just structured to not be a walk in the park adventure.
FFVIII had a trading card battle mini-game that was unique, while SoA had the excellent turn-based battle-engine using tiles instead of cards for the firing the Canons of the Airships. Amazingly fun and intense once you understood the mechanics.
I purchased SoA, both the Dreamcast and the Gamecube versions and still have them in my collection. Just waiting for the Switch version now. Wont be coming out for at least 2 years but will come out, even if it does get unofficially ported but Im hoping for an official release of the digital-only game.
