This weekend saw a fiercely contested Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament at Evo Japan 2020, with a golden Smash Bros.-themed controller being given to the winner by none other than series director, Masahiro Sakurai.
The prize has received some controversy over the last week or so, owing to the fact that tournaments for other titles have offered decent chunks of prize money to their winners rather than just a controller, but it's still a lovely looking thing that we'd happily have on our shelf at home. Or at least, it was, because seconds after it was handed over by Sakurai, it was dropped off the stage.
It appears that the controller was caught and placed back in its box - you can see the look on champion, Shuto “Shuton” Moriya, change from shocked despair to relief - but how annoyed would you be at the guy who tried to hold onto it? That exchange did not go well.
Either way, the gameplay on show during the tournament was something to behold. You can see Shuton's winning match below - he used Captain Olimar to pull off a well-deserved victory.
Congrats, Shuton. Amazing stuff!
Thanks to Greatsong for the tip!

When does the 7.0 update release? Is it today???
@Zach777 tomorrow
@ToonStuff and the next nintendo direct??
@rex_rex Some time later.
Wait so he won absolutely no prize money? Because if that’s the case, pretty awful from Nintendo.
#LinusSmashTips
False title, he doesn't drop it, the guy he hands it to is clearly at fault.
"but it's still a lovely looking thing that we'd happily have on our shelf at home. Or at least, it was, because seconds after it was handed over by Sakurai, it was dropped off the stage."
Then you write that it was caught and received no damage.
Why are you like this.
@rex_rex this year
Oh my Goooooooooooo...
Bruh moments
I'd think they should get the controller as a bonus in addition to the prize money, I've heard nintendo was bad at prizes for tournaments, but that's really bad if it's true that it's just a controller. Also dang that sucks to just drop the controller, but being in that box i'm sure it offered it some cushion, and those pro controllers seem to be pretty strong overall even if it had landed on it directly which it wouldn't have with the box.
@SpaceboyScreams
I've noticed a lot of clickbaity articles around here recently (Such as the one about why you won't be able to play some of your old favourites, with a picture of Goldeneye that was mentioned in half a sentence, if that).
Seems a lot of the writers would be better suited to writing for BuzzFeed.
@Bon_Kurei Why should Nintendo offer prize money?
@Crimson_Ridley How is a piece that talks about games you won't be able to buy due to licencing (Goldeneye) which also mentions Goldeneye possibly be considered clickbaity for using an image of Goldeneye?
Please learn what clickbait means before throwing the word around willy-nilly.
Wish he got some prize money too but still... that's a nice controller.
The prize is even more worthless when you consider pro players probably use the GameCube controller exclusively.
@Damo one thing I've learned over my time on the internet is that not very many people own a dictionary
@ToonStuff You said it
@NESlover85 Because the people who win or even compete in these competitions dedicate large portions of their life to the game and with the amount of money Smash makes, a cash prize wouldn’t be that difficult.
@Bon_Kurei They chose to dedicate their lives to playing a game, no one forced them. To say that Nintendo owes them something is asinine.
No.... The champion handed the controller in it's box to an event handler, and the handler tilted it back too much and dropped it.
@Not_Soos Whether I used the GC controller or not, I wouldn't even consider playing with a Prize Controller... I wouldn't even remove it from the Box.
But yea... Although I don't consider it worthless, it's far from ideal 💯
Just like the ball Nintendo dropped with that prize pool, amirite?
Lol, Smash players don't use pro controllers anyway. He was probably allergic to even touching something other than a GC controller.
Can't wait for the melee players to use this to mock ultimate players somehow
Heck yeah, that guy beat a Shulk with Olimar and Pikmins, he deserves that victory! Wow if Shulk had won i would have been very unamused, but Olimar?! Bro, this man has made me proud!
Also, dumb title, the winner didn't drop it, the person he handed it to did, stop trying to make the title interesting for clicks
Well, to be accurate, the guy he was handing it to because they were done taking pictures of him holding it dropped it, not him. He was aware the controller was not secured to the box, and was tilting the box to keep it inside. The person he handed it off to didn't realize this, and tipped the box upside down as he was taking it.
@Heavyarms55 I honestly prefer the Pro Controller over the GC one, mainly because I find it easier to use.
@Damo Why did you only reply to that part? How about addressing the other part... The part about the very article we are commenting in. You are a head honcho here right? Can you fix the title of the article instead of skirting the issue?
Every one is noticing the trend of this site getting worse, and it keeps getting brought up more and more in the comments, but employees either divert or ignore. The next step will probably be censoring or banning NL fans that are worried about how this site is becoming trashy, and just want to help.
Journalistic integrity needs to be brought back.
I also remember not too long ago, a product review was not properly disclosed as a sponsored review... Even though the product was given to NL for free to keep forever... Which clearly in every major Western country, counts as a sponsorship. But I was told by NL staff that it doesn't count because they didn't pay NL money.. I often wonder when the last time some of the staff here updated their credentials as professional writers, because they have no idea about their own countries regulations, let alone what is considered acceptable and decent in journalism.
@TheAwesomeBowser Everyone has their own preferences of course. I was mostly just cracking a joke that 20 other people already probably made.
@ryancraddock I enjoyed this bit of random news, did not find it misleading or "clickbait"-y in any way, and then I read a few comments, which I now seriously regret. Oh well, people posting comments on the internet may be awful from time to time, but I still love Nintendo Life. Gotta stop scrolling past the article.
@ToonStuff Look up white knight in yours then.
@kurtasbestos It's only a small, small minority that seem to grumble. I'm incredibly proud of the community we have on this site - it's certainly a lot better than I've seen elsewhere!
Why share this on this site? How embarrassing for that dude. Not really that funny of a mistake either to override being so inconsiderate, just embarrassing for him. Scum post, feels kinda icky.
This is why competitive Smash will never get respect it deserves... Just kidding.
@Smashfan502 Sorry, didn't mean to bump the chip on your shoulder.
@Damo It seems like there was a lot less grumbling and a more "YAY let's all like Nintendo together!" sort of attitude however many years ago I first started reading this site (which I don't want to think about because holy crap that was a surprisingly long time ago), but I'm glad to hear that coming from you, and I'm going to choose to believe that not everyone here are jerks. Despite the multiple down-votes your reply to my comment received. Jerks. At any rate, I only have so much free time to spend reading about video games instead of actually playing them every day, and I'm happy to spend that time on Nintendo Life.
