DOOM Eternal developer id Software has announced that the game has been delayed. Sadly for Nintendo fans, the Switch version has been hit hardest.
The developer has shared the following statement with fans, revealing that the game has been pushed back to 20th March 2020 on other platforms and "after" that date on Switch. The delay comes as part of an effort to deliver "the best experience" to players. The game was originally supposed to launch on 22nd November 2019.
As you can see, the announcement also notes that Invasion Mode will be added to the game for free soon after launch, and that DOOM 64 will soon be available across all platforms. Fans who pre-order DOOM Eternal will receive a copy of DOOM 64 on their platform of choice as a free bonus.

This is actually great news! More gaming companies should delay their products for delivering the best experience to its fans!
Doom 64 as preorder is cool. Physical if I ordered it how does that work?? You don’t get doom 64 until this unknown date it future???
When is doom 64 meant to be out?
Eh, I can wait. The delay is a good thing. I’d rather have a delay rather than an unfinished glitchy product. ID Software made the right decision.
I hope Doom 64 still releases in November on Switch like originally planned, but this unfortunately makes it sound like it's being held back to release alongside the other platforms in March. Which is especially unfortunate, given that our version of Eternal has been moved out further than the others.
I think it's a wise idea, especially considering how Rage 2 was a mess at launch and has only recently become playable now.
Why delay Doom 64 as well? It would be great if they let us play that at least while we wait for Eternal...
I'd be lieing if I said I wasn't gutted about this news. I was really looking forward to it. It wouldn't be so bad if we knew it was coming in March 2020 instead but we could be waiting for months after that date. November 2020 perhaps? At least we're still getting Doom 64 in November.
I just bought Doom 3 last night and I love it.
let's just hope that the switch launch isn't way later, that's been a huge problem for other switch games with the big windows in release.
While this was probably my biggest remaining launch of the year I was excited for, I've got enough on my plate that it coming out next year isn't the end of the world.
So long as the Switch release is by like, the end of June I'll be fine with this.
Get rid of the multiplayer garbage and ship the game.
Take your time. I've got plenty of games to tide me over until then.
Now it is releasing in Aninal Crossing month? Welp, no chance of a buy from me. (For now).
I'm disappointed because I was really looking forward to this game, more than most other games. But like others have said, I'd rather have a fully polished game than an unfinished one. Plus the silver lining is this gives me more time to focus on my backlog, current rotation and other upcoming games (Luigi's Mansion 3 for example).
@Zuljaras I agree, I’d rather have little or no day 1 updates. Even better it means they could put the whole game on a the cartridge!
Yet another company realizes the viability of delaying games for the better. * glares angrily at Gamefreak *
A bit of a bummer but really this is a smart move considering they probably can't afford another Fallout 76
Gutted as Doom Eternal was the game I was looking forward to the most this year, that being said I'd much rather have a polished version that is ready to launch so at least I'll have it to play in March
A shame, but I was fearing this would happen, as we didn't have a release date yet, a month before.
Well, if it's to deliver the best experience, even on Switch, it's a good thing they did it.
We've got TONS of awesome games to play now, so it's not really a big deal.
@Wolfgabe
Even if Doom Eternal hadn't been delayed, it would have turned out better than Fallout 76.
Honestly a bummer
Gives me more time with other games so it's all good for me.
Color me surprised, Bethesda actually delayed a game to make sure it's done right. I like the classic DOOM games on PC, and I have the Switch version of DOOM, yeah, still looking forward to this.
Sucks for Stadia. One less game for it's launch
maybe there wil be animal crossing collaboration ?
@Zuljaras i agree and give us more time to get through our backlog of games and focus on pokemon as well in november plus their making sure doom eternal is polished up even more ncluding the switch version as well.
It is fine, I can wait. Still have four other dooms on the switch.
Oh no, Doom is doomed.
If Invasion Mode isn't going to be ready (and they bloody well know it) then why not delay it just a wee bit more so that it is included in the base game on disc/cartridge rather than patching every bloody thing in, and prevent the need to have the game require day one updates/patches?
And if the Switch version is releasing later, I hope that means that 32GB/64GB cartridges will be cheaper by then, though I strongly doubt that Bethesda would deign to use them.
Actually, this is probably a good idea. As much as I like the ideas of NPC interactions and grappling chains and giant laser swords and all of that, anybody who has played Metroid Prime knows that those things slow down gameplay. DOOM is best when it's fast and frantic. So yeah, actually, I have more confidence in the game now that it's been delayed.
@nintendolie Even better:
NintenDOOM is Nintendoomed.
My wallet is happy with this announcement. At least for a while...
So some game breaking thingy. So bad that they have to solve it before work on switch port can continue..
@Dpullam Its actually launching (on other platforms) on the same day as New Horizons.
I would rather a delay so they get it right. Not like Star Wars Jedi outcast where you can’t invert the controls making it in playable to a lot of people. Still waiting for the alleged update.
I would rather them release the game when it's ready.
@Silly_G
Witcher 3 is allegedly on a 32g card so there is no excuse for other companies not to do the same unless they are worried that the end product they present to the public will be sub standard
They gonna fix that fugly HUD/GUI that looks totally out of place with the rest of the game and what it's supposed to be about?
Fine with me. I'm up to my eyeballs in games, not to mention this means they're not rushing out a shoddy product. Shame Switch wont release day and date but, honestly it's fine. We know it's coming and we've got more than enough to play in the meantime.
Hmm, I'd like doom eternal on PS4 but doom 64 on switch 🤔
@carlos82 Same
The Last of US 2 - February
Doom - March
CiberPunk - April.
March is actually better. Good change of pace between my other 2 pre-orders. Still have Shenmue 3, Fallen Order and Pokemon in Nov anyway.
Old games as a Pre-Order Bonus is also a great idea.
I won't be getting DOOM Eternal for months anyway. March sees the release of Final Fantasy VII Remake and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. And then Cyberpunk 2077 is coming out in April. And I'm sure I'll be kneedeep in a dozen games from my backlog, too.
This works out well for me.
Great. Now I am caught between choosing 3 games in March. Animal Crossing New Horizon, Space Invaders Invincible Collection... And now this.
I'm glad they delay Doom Eternal for 2020 but still why delay Doom 64 as well? It's just a rom with new coat of paint, it shouldn't be that hard to release it later this year.
Never heard of the game doom unit now..
@Stocksy Normally a retailer will send you a code, or the code will be in the game box.
All good. Updating their customers is always a good thing.
Maybe I'll try the last Doom for Switch. I've read good things but I solo play, so I dont know.
Not bad news at all. They should have delayed both Wolfenstein and Doom on Switch as well, I hope this one doesn't need a performance/feature patch afterwards.
Honestly, I'm not. There are too many great games coming out and my backlog is ridiculous 😒 Take ALL the time you need😁👍
I don't mind, definitely helps to see some releases get spaced out. I also don't mind the Switch version releasing after the others. Switch is the only system I play on/care about these days so I'm just glad we're getting it on Switch to begin with.
I prefer this over day one 50gb patch
I wonder how many people read the article or just jump to the comments.doom 64 is not delayed .just doom eternal lol
On March 20, 2020, gamerz across the world will be ripping and tearing...and occasionally taking breaks to water some flowers and catch some bugs.
Wow! who'd of guessed that the switch version is the most affected.
Defenders all defending. Anybody have any idea of how much money id/Bethesda/Zenimax have at their disposal? We first saw gameplay footage how long ago? They can’t hire additional staff?
They want to further digress and implement even more unimportant ancillary features? We’re all unaffected by this because it is just a video game and life’s totem pole of priorities is a mother. However, there’s no need to praise a developer for this sort of thing when their life’s priority literally is delivering a working video game on time.
@Woosh193 The excuse would be that 32GB cards are still incredibly expensive. Which is still valid.
@flapjack-ashley That certainly doesn't help things! I don't own the other consoles regardless, but my time will definitely go to Animal Crossing New Horizons, even though I love Doom.
If the Switch version comes more than a week after the other versions, I won't buy the game. Maybe does sound a little extreme, but whatever. 🙄
Even though Doom is one of the few 'Day 1' franchises for me, I'll gladly accept delays to get a finished game they are confident in releasing. Thankfully the "more affected delay" doesn't affect me as this is a PC purchase.
More developers should go back to delaying rather than releasing a mess that needs to be fixed with patches later.
I would rather have a delay than a half working/finished game on time
@Darkyoshi98 Did you read the announcement they posted? "Doom 64 will be released on March 20, 2020 on all platforms" Towards the bottom of ID's announcement.
Doom 64 was supposed to release Nov. 22, 2019. So if 3/20/20 is correct now, that is a delay.
that’s one hell of a delay 😈
Bummer. This was easily my most anticipated game this year.
If it makes the game better and it allows them to avoid crunch, then I'm all for the delay.
It's Doom 64 still to release on switch on November 22nd?
@Danrenfroe2016 dude, just read the freaking tweet, you and all the other lazy commenters out there who seemingly don’t have one minute to read the freaking thing.
DOOM 64 is out on 20/03/20 ON ALL PLATFORMS.
Rant over.
At least the wait won't be eternal.
I don't think the switch version was hit the hardest by this delay, because the Switch version was never going to come out at the same time as the other versions. If you go back to the E3 video, when Doom Eternal appears it says "Date:TBD", even though on the Bethesda E3 conference a few days prior they had already announced the release date, so no, this is not news.
This was the game I expected the most for this year, and I’m hurt because the Switch version will arrive even later, but maybe they’ll add something extra to the Switch Version, like a skin or something.
@clvr I read that that.... Hoping they meant all other platforms.
Not sad at all. This happened loads in the 90’s and I was glad every time it did as it always meant what followed was the best that game could have been as developers couldn’t rely on DLC and patch updates. This is how a developer should make a game. Get it 100% on day one then DKC and updates are purely content based and not reactive maintenance patches. EA would do well to learn from this ethos. It’s not like they’ve been going for 3 decades or anything!
A classy move by ID, at least they have been open and transparent.
Nice they have put in some bonuses for people having to wait.
I'm happy they delay it. It mean more time for me to catch up to my back log and the other 3 routes on FETH
I won't lie, I'm actually quite pleased as it means I can catch up on any backlog, and it's one less major game to worry about over Christmas
@Shinobi1Kenoby
Though this rule clearly did not apply to Superman 64 or Duke Nukem lol
@TPort777
True, I guess they do have to eat, poop and drive the kids to soccer practice. 😂
I'm not bothered about Doom: Eternal but I'm really gutted to read that Doom64 is also delayed until March! I believe it was originally stated as a November release, and this article states "coming soon" whereas the press release states March 20. I'll be really annoyed if the delay to Doom 64 is solely because of the delay to Doom: Eternal - given the fact it's a pre-order bonus I would expect that Doom 64 could still launch early and be bought separately or have a system where paid pre-orders can download it early. ARGH!
I guess this means Doom Eternal will now be the disappointing minute of every future Direct until release where we already know what it is, but here's yet another trailer anyways to fill in time and butter us up for the next announcement.
While disappointing, it’s alright. I just took count of my Switch collection today and it’s nearing 100 for physical games alone. I probably need to take a break for awhile.
Bravo to them. They do the right thing.
@abe_hikura yeah that’s what I was thinking. Others have stated now they think doom 64 is being delayed and that didn’t cross my mind at all. I assumed that would be out next month and somehow they were doing it as a bonus then. Like they do with Beta codes or whatever with some games.
I assume it’ll be a code in box if delayed until game release. Shame really as it would soften blow to have doom 64 in the meantime for a lot of folk
@Stocksy DOOM 64 is now launching on all platforms including Switch on March 20, 2020 alongside the PC/PS4/Xbox One versions of Eternal
I assume if you preorder physcially your copy of the game will come with a download code for DOOM 64 regardless of selected platform (excluding PC because obviously that version is being released solely on Steam)
@Majora101 The DOOM 64 launch date was pushed back too
Presumably it was planned to release on all PC/PS4/Xbox One alongside the Switch version on Eternal's initial release date, but now all 4 of those versions have been pushed back to March 20, 2020
It might've never even been planned as a Switch timed exclusive to begin with
Sweet! Now I dont have to cancel my preorder so I can survive after ordering the Marvel Infinity Saga set!
@Darkyoshi98 You should read the official announcement, DOOM 64 is delayed as well, so it can be the preorder bonus.
For now, DOOM Eternal preorder cancelled on my side. We will see if it gets back or I let it pass (Cyberpunk coming very soon after it, most likely the better game)
Well, seeing as this comes during the month off FF7R, I bid it a fond farewell before it even arrives. November was in the dead last few months of the year but come March, I ain't got time fo dat.
I mean, it could still run like ass after the delay. Delays mean nothing, consumer reviews are the only marketing of value.
Gives me a good enough reason to now download the older games,especially now they've patched them to address the graphical and audio bugs people had highlighted when they first released. Got plenty of hours to put into The Witcher 3 soon too so this delay isn't a bad thing for me personally. Shame DOOM 64 is also tied to it though as I'd have picked that up next month
Its for the better.
So fine by me
There were already a ton of games coming out I wanted to get. Also, more time in the oven is welcome. Sales will be good for this game no matter when they release it.
Always a good thing with delays for quality reasons.
Honestly, totally okay to wait for Eternal to launch. Doom 64, on the other hand, is a bit of a blow. I've played through Doom 1, 2, and 3 on Switch in the past month and the 64 announcement was icing on the cake.
Oh well. At least we're getting a ton of Doom on the Switch!
@GuruOfGreatness it quite clearly did apply to both these games, they were rushed out as were dreadful.
Superman 64 is another case all together as that is officially be of the worst games ever made in history and is due to every conceivable reason.when it was released is irrelevant. It was always gonna be dog dirt
Erm, Duke Nukem Forever started production in 1997 and was released in 2011 and was still one of the worst games ever; so its 14 year delay still didn't lead to an all time classic
@Shinobi1Kenoby
Erm, Duke Nukem Forever started production in 1997 and was released in 2011 and was still one of the worst games ever; so its 14 year delay still didn't lead to an all time classic
@GuruOfGreatness it you’re just being needlessly argumentative for no reason and clearly no guru.
Duke Nukem Forever wasn’t delayed for 14 years to improve the programming and build like these discussed with Doom Eternal. Duke Nukem Forever took 14 years as it went through several publishers and numerous law suits. Not one delay was “ we’re nearly there but need another 3-6 months to tighten up” it was all publishers and developers suing each other over contractual matters. Not a single one in the interest of the games quality.
@Shinobi1Kenoby
Needlessly argumentative? You took the time and effort to read through and respond to a sarcastic comment I made on the 8th of October, 31 days ago as of this writing in a long forgotten topic?!
Pot, Kettle, Black?
Even worse still was the fact that I bothered to respond to it in the first place, so that's my wrong doing.
@Shinobi1Kenoby
To make it worse, I've actually bothered to go back and read your original comment that made me respond in jest, and I agree with everything you said!
So how on Earth you've taken a fellow gamer who 100% AGREES with your delayed games are better comment, and turned against them and claiming them to be argumentative is beyond me.
Trust me, I keep myself to myself on these forums, and rarely comment full stop. I lived through the Irish Wii U Warrior before he got banned and only ever made ONE comment to him, and even then I kept it polite.
@GuruOfGreatness
Lol.
Mine was also written in sarcastic jest. Sarcasm doesn’t really translate in text though obviously.
But objectively, nothing you said actually agreed with my original comment or anything after. Your comment that what I said didn’t apply to two abysmal games. A tangent and irrelevant point, (sarcastic comment).
The fact I’ve “taken the trouble” to comment on something from 30 days ago was actually no trouble as I only ready your comment for the first time, 5 minutes before I responded today. I hardly ever comment on here.
@Shinobi1Kenoby
"Though this rule clearly did not apply to Superman 64 or Duke Nukem lol"
I would say that this comment would show as being in agreement of your theory of delayed games being good wouldn't it? I even used an lol to show the light heartedness that was intended in case you perhaps actually liked those games.
In a nutshell, all I meant was that those two games were delayed like hell if memory serves me correct, and yet upon release, both were, well, absolute horse crap, meaning that the general rule of a delayed game being good, was in fact NOT applied to those games. Tis all I meant.
@GuruOfGreatness
Which I agree with in essence, but it’s a completely different point,
A game being delayed because it hasn’t passed quality control or the developer delaying the game to make sure it is to a certain quality always results in a better version of that game. As per this article on why Doom is being delayed.
An arbitrary total being delayed because it was stuck in a decade long law case is a completely different version of a delay. Which a delay relative and not to a handful of games and completely different to this point in case.
I get it was being sarcastic, but was an irrelevant point.
@Shinobi1Kenoby
The story of Duke Nukem and all its financial woes (of which I am actually aware of the story of lack of finance etc behind it) made yesterday also wasn't my original point/comment on the 8th of October, that only came yesterday. I made a "joke" (if you can call it that) about 2 crap delayed games, in full agreement with your comment, and you've given me chapter and verse as to why my "joke" didn't really pertain to these two games. With deepest and most genuine respect, there is a difference between correcting someone's mistakes and just splitting hairs on a sarcastic joke. Not sure where you're located on this planet, but if you've ever seen an eposode of Coronation Street, it reminds me of something a character called Roy Cropper would do.
@GuruOfGreatness you’re welcome
