Nintendo has just dropped a brand new update for Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the NecroDancer Featuring The Legend of Zelda. The best news? It's free!
That's right, if you own the base game, you can go ahead and update the software to receive 'Octavo's Ode' without having to pay a single penny. It's a brand new storyline available to play as we speak. Here's Nintendo's announcement:
A free update for Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the NecroDancer featuring The Legend of Zelda is out now, and includes the following new contents:
- Octavo's Ode: a new storyline starring the game's villain, Octavo. Attack enemies using his Golden Lute and uncover Octavo's true intentions for taking over Hyrule.
- Dungeon Mode: test your mettle in this challenging new mode where you'll face the toughest foes!
Please note: Octavo's Ode storyline and Dungeon Mode are unlocked upon completing the main story.
We certainly weren't expecting to see this drop into our news feeds today, but we're not complaining!
Will you be giving this a whirl today?

Excellent news.
Guess I get to an another bullet-point in my list of, "Times I Had to Close Shovel Knight in the Middle of a Level to Play Something Else."
Wonderful, too bad I can't even beat the demo
didnt like the original game so not interested but great for people who love this!
Neat. I tried the demo, but it just didn't do it for me.
Brilliant! Still need to actually complete the main game though, even after quite a few hours of CotN on PC I’m bad at it.
The game is quite difficult but fun. And I do love free DLC
Oh wow, what a pleasant surprise. Such an amazing game but it could really do with a bit more content so this is excellent news. One of my favourite games of this year (and by far the best Zelda game released this year).
I really want to like this game, but for some reason I suck at both this and Crypt of the Necromancer, I just can't get the rhythm right. I don't think I entirely suck at rhythm games, but I just can't do it. I don't want to play on a mode with free movement either as it feels like cheating and admitting defeat.
I will try going back to it eventually and give it another go.
Wow this is great news. Seeing as cadence was a top 3 release for 2019 in my books, I'm very happy to see this. I'll be firing it up tonight!
I may need to try the demo, as I haven't played this yet. I like to support devs that do this type of thing. I may just go ahead and buy it, who knows.
LOVE THIS GAME!
Best coop of 2019!
Might leave this until I've got my Hori Split Pad joy cons. The game is good but playing on the standard non-d-pad gives me cramp.
YES! Game that keeps on giving.
Awesome. I love this game.
@lemonjellydude i didn't like the original too but this one is better (at least for me).
@Kalmaro Even after beating the original Crypt of the Necrodancer, I struggled for a good long while to get a hold of the controls and movement in Cadence of Hyrule. After wrapping my head around the game a little more, it eventually came to me, and was able to clear a dungeon. Now I can clear some tough maps without taking a single hit. So the learning curve is tough, but will come to you. Also, you can change the gameplay so that everything moves in accordance to your movement, instead of everything moving on a timed beat. It completely changes the flow and strategy of the game, but might be a more enjoyable way to play if you take the dive.
I might...but I would need to relearn how to do everything again.
Oooh, unexpected and great! The music is just so catchy for me. I've still go to beat the end, though.
OHYEAH THIS is news
@Desrever That reminds me of the bard from crypt. It's easier kinda but does make the game feel different. It's just odd.
Are you going to force me? Huh? You think I should do it the way you want. Why can't I decide my own rights? The only Zelda game in on the my Switch Lite I care about is Link's Awakening! I play it whenever I feel like it. At least I don't get lost in it.
That's awesome but I get my butt handed to me in the demo itself. I've beaten games on hard difficulty but this one seems like nightmare mode on Doom lol
Once they surprise drop the price, I'll buy it. Or if a physical version is made. I count this as a Zelda game, which is the only series I still actually collect (although to be fair there are other series with lasser entries over the years that will still make me buy any collector's edition they release, like Bayonetta, No More Heroes, Bravely Default,...), so a physical edition is really somewhere high on my "wishlist". I'm putting it between quotes because I'll be equally happy if they don't release it and therefore don't make me spend money on it.
I was hoping this game would get more support and am ecstatic to hear this, I’ll download the update later!
Yes!! Such a little gem of a game. It starts hard but once you get some hearts and get better it becomes quite easy. Still very enjoyable. Will dive straight in tonight!
the musical journey begins again
@MS7000 I'm pretty good at rhythm games (can usually handle medium to hard songs on most without breaking too much of a sweat) but I absolutely sucked at CotN and actually still do a bit. I found Cadence clicked for me, but only after a fair amount of practice. It is worth approaching the game as a dungeon crawler rather than a rhythm game. I found that I was focusing too much on the rhythm actually. The game is EXTREMELY forgiving with the timing window for movements, so much so that if you hesitate when you are thinking, as long as you are quick to realise and react, you often can still get in on the beat. Thinking about the enemy movements at all times and your placement as a character is the best way, and taking your time by moving back and forth on the spot from a distance also helped me. Apologies if this comment helps you in zero ways, but I just thought I'd give you my thoughts on how I changed my way of thinking about and approaching the game to learn how to play it properly myself without dying constantly. Both games do require a huge amount of practice, particularly in Cadence if you're not used to the enemy types (I haven't played a huge amount of Zelda to be honest but playing a fair amount on the Gameboy seems to have helped me here), but I promise you they are worth sticking with, because eventually it will just click, and will become second nature. It's just it takes a lot longer than you would expect, particularly if you are used to and pretty good at other rhythm games. I basically refused to give up because I refused to believe that a rhythm game could beat me, but it's only when I stopped thinking rhythm game and started thinking dungeon crawler that things changed.
@Kalmaro Same... but I stuck with in the main game and (magically?) it suddenly clicked and it was actually easy.
@Muddy_4_Ever I may go back to it, I own it afterall, haha.
I was hoping this game'd get DLC, though more akin to the alt. soundtracks Crypt of the Necrodancer got. If Jake Kaufman, or any of the other artists that got to work on that game could work on this, the hype would probably kill me. That said, I'm glad they're shadowdropping DLC like this, though it makes me wonder if the next Direct isn't coming for another month...
Played this game on fixed beat mode and had a blast - thoroughly recommend that to those that aren’t into rhythm games but want to check out this fun Zelda game with awesome music!
I'm just closing in on the final boss now, good to know it's not ending anytime soon.
Nice, but I first have to play the base game someday (I have it all loaded and waiting for me on a micro-sd).
