Update: It seems that users who have reported the issues affecting the Switch version of Civilization VI have been getting official 2K customer service responses, one of which includes a temporary workaround.
According to reddit user Throwaway489er (via Eurogamer), an official response states that the dev team is aware of the issue and working on a solution, although at present there's no timeframe on a patch to resolve the problem. There is, however, a workaround for the issue which involves declaring war on the crash-causing civ before the end of your turn. Here are the details of the workaround from the customer service rep, as posted by Throwaway489er:
"A discovered known workaround is to declare war on the Civilization that is causing the crash right before you end your turn. This seems to alleviate the crashing in most instances. In order for you to know which Civilization is causing the crash, you'll have to pay attention to which Civ's turn it falls onto immediately before the crash happens. Once discovered, reload the save, declare war on that Civ and hit "Next Turn". I hope this workaround helped out. If you have any further questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to let us know!"
Let us know if you try this workaround and if it works for you below.
Original Story: The Switch version of Civilisation VI is a pretty good way to experience this world-building conquest title, but the latest update for the game has essentially rendered it unplayable.
As reported by Nintendo Life reader HeroponRiki, a bug has been introduced after the last update which causes the game to crash just as you're about to win a game. This issue appears to be occurring almost 100% of the time, and several threads have appeared on Reddit which feature users complaining about the problem. Nintendo Life contributor Yuri Litvinenko has also reported that he's experienced this problem with his copy of the game.
Reports have been flooding in since last month, and as of today, there's been no statement from 2K Games on when this will be fixed. We'll update this post if we hear anything, but in the meantime, drop us a comment if you've been impacted by this problem.

That's not how you update a game.
have these companys heard of testing?
with any luck it will be fixed, but its 2K so not holding my breath!
@suikoden Indeed, an error that happens 100% of the time in quite a common game state should be impossible to miss with even the most minor play testing.
Just imagine Nintendo leaving a big untested error in their updates. How unstable!
@setezerocinco
But does Gandhi still go nuclear ?
For a game that takes such a long time to play, this is one MEAN bug for the audience, and one testers might understandably have missed, if it only exists on one platform.
Not that it's much of an excuse for not fixing it, though. But they're probably on the case. It can be tricky to figure out what causes something like that.
@KitsuneNight
Sure, but now he nukes the game.
@Kitchener
He takes no prisoners.
I assume this is still an issue if you have rose and fall and gathering storm expansions?
@ozwallyes the patch was partially brought out for the expansions, so i would say yes
A bummer for sure, although I reckon it'll be fixed by the time I come close to winning here. 😅
Currently awaiting my order after buying it on Black Friday, hoping it's patched before it arrives!
That's odd because I completed a diplomatic victory last night and had no issue at all.
Oh. Well that's... bad. I have an ongoing game going myself. They better fix this real soon because that's quite an ugly blemish on a game that's otherwise so awesome.
I had to delete the game from my switch because it was too time consuming and I didn't play anything else lol
Did the update at least add the hot seat option? A thing they promised us so long ago, that I'm starting to suspect they lied to us.
Thank you for covering this topic. My game crashed right before winning. I sent a support ticket to 2K and they said the developers are working on a fix.
I made it to the cashier with this game at Walmart on Thanksgiving, mistakenly thinking it was on sale for $20, but I passed on it at the $30 price point. (It was Bestbuy that had it for $20.)
@original_pmf Same, I didn't have any issues winning a religious victory post update.
2K doing their thing.
I noticed more errors which ended the game. Thanks for the info!
No problem for me either with a culture victory last weekend playing the Gathering Storm expansion.
For the post update bugs, delete your save data from before the update. Start with new save data. That seems to eliminate most issues people are having. Worked for me, at least for the beginning part of a new game.
The victory bug is still present though and will need to be patched out. At least it's at the end of a game which takes a loooong time. Can just leave the save right before winning until patched. Or access on PC via 2K cloud saves, win, then transfer back.
You misspelled the name of the game. It is “civilization “
@Dman10 - Not in European English. They use "S"s in words where the US would use "Z"s.
The implementation of the World Congress in the expansion is a bit wonky, too. Seems like this could have used more time in QA.
Guess I won't be asking for this game for Christmas, LOL.
This is such an amazing game, I'm sad people would miss it because of a momentary bug.
Reading the comments it seems the problem happens when you continue a pre patch game. If you start a new game after the patch there is no issue.
That sounds pretty bad. Glad I never picked it up!
I had a persistent crash that was resolved by dumping the cache on switch. System/formatting options / dump cache
Thats normal för Civ VI
Every update that comes to the pc version breaks the game for several weeks.
Haven't quite finished a game yet, so I'll have to keep this in mind. Hope they come out with a patch soon.
@cyrus_zuo
That is not true. I've no doubt there are separate issues caused by loading an old save, but the victory crash is present in new games started after the update, and in fact only started appearing after the update.
As for the "declare war" workaround, I declared war on all other civs before the victory and it did nothing. That fix only works for crashes caused by AI behavior, not the victory condition crash (or the numerous random crashes that tend to happen on larger maps for that matter.)
There is another strange thing. The newly added Hall Of Fame leaderboard seems to not keeping your previous scores and the date of your scores is registered as made in 1970 for some reason and not 2019.
This game is worst game ever.what a glitch nice one 2k you animals ðŸ˜ðŸ˜‚
i wanted to buy it during Black Friday, finally, the discount was not that interesting, and knowing that it's completely bogus, no thanks
I got hit with this, even submitted a support ticket(didn't help me). I'll not play until it gets fixed.
This is a perfect example of the sort of thing that I hate about this generation. The game was working fine, it had several small patches that did a great job and didn't take up much space... then they released this massive 2.6+GB patch and it breaks the game! I didn't update because of the size of the patch, and I am really glad I didn't. The only annoying thing is how the game asks me to update when I start it, something that I would like to turn off.
And i almost got the game and the update. Pass for me for now
Oh dear. People will be updating this game which they paid for out of their hard earned cash and now suddenly it dosen't work as it should. Not acceptable really....
Why would the user need a throwaway account to post about this?
My game crashes just one turn before a science victory. I think it also ignored my culture vic a couple of turns before.
Its a shame, because the Game has been great so far.
Ah, that explains why my 30+ hour save started crashing the game mid-turn.
Thank God for autosaves!
@Aneira it did add hotseat for up to 12 players.
Does this only affect people who bought the expansions? I only have the base vanilla version. Just curious. What sucks is I was just thinking of playing it for first time in months + get the expansions.
Edit: Just realized that - after booting the game - I never downloaded the patch. And now I'm not going to haha.
Played today, finished a scenario without issue.
Such a good game, sorry for those having issues.
Soooo I tried the declare war "solution"
I've passed both thresholds for a cultural and science victory and the game just....continues.
Pretty frustrating, I play this game quite often, hopefully they fix it soon bc I'm done with it until it is patched.
@ALinkttPresent Probably someone who doesn't want to have a reddit account, or someone who has a lot of personal posts and don't want it to be seen by civ players (and journalists)
When the financial market is going to crash, the government always go to war. This Civilization game is very realistic.
Nothing like a game crashing bug to lower sales of that new expensive expansion...
Are these crashes present in the PS4 version as well?
Besides the bug I would like them to improve the performance in the late game. Everything is getting really slow after a few hours into a game
Instead of assuming that solution you got from Reddit works you should have tried it. If you read my responses to the Reddit post you link to, you'll see that I said it didn't work, yet you go and spread false hopes for people waiting for this to be patched. I check literally every day to see if there are any new patches. The only solution is a patch. Now I see all the news sources claiming that declaring war is a fix when it isn't.
@HeroponRiki The "fix" doesn't work. I even wrote that it didn't work on Reddit as a reply to the Reddit post they linked to, but the author of this article didn't read my post. Now every news source is claiming that this is a temporary fix when it clearly isn't. Can people actually try it before claiming it works? What happened to honest journalism?
@andywitmyer It does impact the vanilla game, even if you don't buy the expansions.
@Jtm297 Well that sucks.
@hitscan85 From what I've seen, no, but the PS4 and Xbox One version have their own SEPARATE flavor of game breaking bugs. If you can get this game on PC, get it, if you don't have a good PC, just don't bother.
@HeroponRiki I see, thank you.
The latest Switch Update fixed my save file at last. I could go past the turn that caused the crash and claim my science victory.
I saw on their facebook page that they patched it. Wouldn't that mean there is an update? I checked and I have the most updated version of the game. IDK.
The victory screen crash is indeed fixed now. Not sure if the other crashing issues are any better, but I'm too irritated with this game to put in another 20 hour run to test it right now. I think I need a long break from it.
Havent had any of these issues and i play it alot (handheld mode).
Or does this happen with the DLC?
