If you've been hoping for a Spotify app to one day appear on your Nintendo Switch, you may well be waiting for a very long time.
On Spotify's Community portal, a user going by the name Erboda sent in a request to get the music streaming app running on Nintendo's latest console. The comment was made back in 2017, only a month after the Switch first launched, and has since received 11,000 votes from other users also wishing to express their support for the request.
Finally, after all this time, Spotify staff have responded to the popular suggestion. As is often the case in situations like these, the response refuses to commit to either a 'yes' or 'no' answer:
"Hey folks, Spotify staff here.
We’re always working on improving the Spotify experience across platforms, but we don’t have any further information to share at the moment.
It should also be noted that we typically don't announce integrations with third parties in advance. Thanks for continuing to share your ideas."
For the most part, Nintendo has designed the Switch to be a games-only console. While the PS4 and Xbox One can run a countless number of apps including Twitch, Amazon Prime Video and a variety of TV services, the Switch only has YouTube and Hulu. As such, we'd expect the demand for a Switch Spotify app would have to be incredibly high before Nintendo opens up to the idea.
Still, that final 'third party' sentence does give us a little bit of hope for a partnership in the future. It seems that if Spotify ever does come to the console, it would get a surprise-launch without any notice coming our way beforehand.
Would you like to have Spotify on Switch? Let us know in the comments.

If you could use Spotify whilst playing games I'd be up for that but if it's just one or the other I don't see much point tbh.
Honestly why bothering listening to music on a Switch? Really not the best form factor for that.
Don't you have phones people?? 😝😉
I think if I could a) use it while playing games and b) be able to connect my Bluetooth headphones I'd be interested, but as neither of those are currently possible I can't exactly blame Spotify for not being too keen on the idea.
I would LOVE that. My Smart TV doesn't have Spotify, so if I just wanna hear music from my TV I have to use YouTube. I'd use a Switch Spotify app all
the time. Probably not on portable mode though
It's not that surprising, really. Spotify has over a hundred million users. Developing for a whole new platform to get 11,000 more must look like a drop in the ocean.
I'd much rather Netflix on the switch. I've got Spotify on my ps4 already and use it frequently. I suppose the same could be said of Netflix on my ps4 but at least the Switch has the portability factor. Whereas for portable music I'd just use a phone and a bluetooth speaker.
Personally. no not interested.
It might be nice for others of to listen to music while playing games.
But then I play on mute anyway and have something else on in the background.
but I wouldn't mind the system getting more multimedia functionality.
@Savino @Godzil You guys are right. The Switch would not be great for just listening to music. But on ps4 and Xbone, you can use spotify to listen to music while playing games. This is what I assume people want on the Switch.
@javiboy2 Portable...Until you need to "sign in" to use an internet connection.
Unless you could download music to the Switch, which I don't see happening, it seems like a pointless option in regard to portability when the vast majority of people have a phone in their pocket more than capable of running Spotify. The only other workaround to the Switch's god awful connectivity options is to use a phone as a mobile hotspot...At which point, just use the phone.
Not a fan of Spotify. So they don't need to bother on my behalf.
@HammerKirby I see, even if I doubt the switch (in it's current software form) can support such a thing. And it would also need game to have a way to disable IGM if such a thing would run, as the switch was not design with that in mind, I doubt it will ever happen.
I wonder, how does that work on the X1/PS4 for in game music?
i love spotify but I dont need my switch to use this
If it can't run in the background it won't be of much use. I rather have a Plex to be honest.
Can someone tell the people who contacted spotify that they bought a video games playing machine.
Guys, the switch would be the worst device to listen music with. No sim card for streaming when no WiFi is available, way bigger than your phone, no Bluetooth connection with headphones, etc.
The thing people should be asking is to make Nintendo publish their songs on Spotify. Square Enix put the entire soundtrack from octopath traveler and it became my favorite thing to listen to this year. Imagine the greatness that would come with the incredible soundtracks Nintendo has under their IPs.
My switch is for gaming. My phone is for internet, music, tv apps that can be casted to my smart tv. My ps3/4 are DVD players and occasionally gaming console. Why does my switch need to do anything else. We still have our Wii U hooked up and is used daily by someone in the house. I have never used Hulu on my switch despite using it on my phone, but I did get YouTube and I have used that but not enough to care it’s there.
Why? Really? Everyone has a smart phone. And the speakers on the switch are horrible.
Spotify on switch....why? People really need that?
@Savino
After a while I get fed up with hearing the same tracks over and over and over and over and over again.
And I honestly have so much to listen too and too watch, I'd rather just combine things.
At this point I believe people want all this stuff on the Switch because for some reason every device in existence is "supposed" to have and play everything, not because it makes any sense.
Before Nintendo opens up to the idea?
Unless I can stream Napalm Death while playing Captain Toad I can't really see the point of this. If it could run in the background though, that would be pretty nice.
I get a ton of usage out of the YouTube and Hulu apps on my Switch. My smart TV has both of these apps pre-installed, but the interface sucks, and both are prone to crashing. So my initial reaction was "Sweet! More media apps on the Switch!"
But the more I think about it, the less useful I find it to have Spotify for all the numerous reasons already mentioned here.
I can't imagine that it would let you overlay the audio over the game's soundtrack, but there would be some value there if you could. Especially for those endless old school JRPG grinding sessions
Do you guys not have phones?
@Tao I meant portability in regards to Netflix, as I could at least easily dock the switch to a larger screen if I traveled. A tv isn't necessarily required to use Spotify so I don't find Spotify on Switch practical at all unless like others above mentioned it could play in the background.
Wouldn't get it if I could.
Streaming apps such as Netflix or the like then yes I would
11,000 people? Over the course of two years? F#cking priceless.
Get some in ear headphones with "ambient mode" then put your over ear headphones on top of that and you is sorted.
I couldn't care less. Put youtube on and stream whatever you like, pretty much all music is on there. What we really need is a TWITCH app.
Zero interest in having that on my Switch
@jump first post nailed it
Would LOVE that. Only if it runs in the background though. It'd be perfect for the long hatching sessions in Pokemon.
Not at all... Of all the many things I would love to have run on my switch, Spotify is far from it.
It is the one thing on my PS4 that I love more than the Switch; the ability to stream music while playing my games. It has made driving in ARKHAM KNIGHT and Web swinging in SPIDER-MAN that much more enjoyable.
We'll get spotify on switch as soon as half-life 3 is announced for switch and they make a Cyberpunk 2077 switch port.
Seems counter intuitive.
@Godzil How else you going to listen to those Smash tunes?
Even the YouTube app for the Switch is useless. I mean, using it for looking at game-related hints and stuff while playing a game would've been nice, but the app can't run while a game is running in the background, so yeah... useless (for me at least).
I mean, I don't see anyone who would pick up their Switch for playing YouTube vids instead of their phone, tablet, or going to a PC. The only reason (I can think of) that would be truly usefull would be to look at something while in the middle of a game session to avoid having to rely on a second device for that. But no, doesn't work.
Spotify would be nice if working while playing games, but I'm sure it won't. So useless. Like YouTube.

I'd rather use Google play music since it's ad free YouTube as well. But I'd just use my phone.
i want Netflix on Switch more than Disney+ and especially Spotify
I don’t care about Spotify or even Netflix but I would like Disney+. Especially because, unlike Hulu, all of their content can be downloaded for offline viewing.
@Gwynbleidd if you have Movies Anywhere then all of your movies linked to the service are watchable on YouTube not just the ones bought through Google. So you can use it to access your iTunes movies or Amazon Video purchase as well right on your Switch.
Still waiting for Netflix, and now Disney +. Nintendo's stubbornness can be infuriating sometimes.
I don't see a need for it but it can be a option of course. I mean why not?
But i do think Netflix should come to Switch and maybe Disney+ (for the Netherlands, we don't have Hulu or Prime). Especially how Netflix has all these Anime shows.
What’s the point if you can’t listen to music while playing your games? That’s a must imo
@EVIL-C I assume you have a phone. Why not just use it on that?
@tobsesta99 I also have a PC. Why don't I just game exclusively on that, and not bother with consoles?
The better question is just "why not include it?" Please don't make excuses for dumb decisions. Many including myself, would love it. It's costs nothing. It hinders no one to include the features.
I wish it had an email client.
Music streaming would be great if Switch could multitask it somehow, but it's not that big a deal. I could always just use my phone and/or smart speaker in the rare event I want an alternate soundtrack to my game.
That is one of the things my phone with bluetooth audio and 128GB of memory is for.
@Godzil hardware wise Switch should be able to do it, even the PS Vita could play music in the background while playing games (from your local storage)
As a Spotify Premium subscriber, I really wouldn't care for this. I already have Spotify's apps on my phone, tablet and Roku. (The phone and tablet can control the Spotify app on the Roku as well.)
My songs and playlists are already downloaded onto my phone and tablet. I already carry my phone with me when I'm out and about. Why would I bother?
Spotify should really take SSBU into consideration. One of the features in SSBU is to listen to music.
I may be old school, but I used to have a cd collection of over 400, but since I have given them away I prefer to support an artist on bandcamp.
It would be nice for temporarily replacing a game's default music, but unless you don't have any other device that can run Spotify, that's the only point I can think of.
"While the PS4 and Xbox One can run a countless number of apps including Twitch, Amazon Prime Video and a variety of TV services, the Switch only has YouTube and Hulu."
PS4 and Xbox One can also keep these apps running in the background, and afaik will play music from Spotify in the background while a game is running. I haven't seen any apps on Switch that you don't have to close when booting up a game.
I really dont care i just want awesome games.
Seems the fanbase has proven most people don't want useless media apps on their GAME console. In any case, I wouldn't touch Spotify with a 30ft pole.
People seem to forget that there are plenty of users of the nintendo switch that dont have acces to other platforms like cellphones or laptops. The more apps the switch gets the better! Bring on spotify, netflix, disney plus and everything else.
could careless. i prefer to use free ones like pandora and tunein.
Honestly, I'm still waiting for Netflix to come to the Switch. Why is it taking so long?
@jump I already do. I have my Switch connected to a capture card and connected to my PC, so the audio goes through my PC thus I can have Spotify playing. I have it setup like this as I stream, but obviously in portable I can't have spotify playing.
I can't really see it being added either.
Spotify on switch would be nice but if it’s not going to support playing music while playing games then I could wait a it longer
I'm a dinosaur when it comes to music, like games, its usually physical for me.
Would rather Nintendo allow pairing of bluetooth headphones so I don't need the Genki adapter
Don't you people have phones?
Regardless of whether or not you would personally use the app, arguing against more usability for this $300 device seems more than a little silly to to me. For example, I have a phone and a dozen other devices that have YouTube, but that hasn't stopped me from clocking 300 hours on the Switch's YouTube app, thanks to it starting up faster than my PS3/4, and having a snappier interface than my smart TV.
@BulkSlash It would be amazing to use bluetooth headphones,
why? makes no sense for me
Spotify on a portable console makes more sense than on a stationary console! But Nintendo has real artists: musicians, sound engineers, live bands, touring symphony orchestras. It would be a shame if people listen to Spotify instead of Nintendo's high quality soundtracks during playtime.
Why do people want useless app on the Device. This is a Gaming Console. Want those others get the App on your Smart Phone instead.
I believe it'd be perfect for parties. Set it up and put it on in the background, letting people come over and add songs, similar to how many of my other friends use their PS4, except the switch is lighter and more portable.
Ok I just don´t get it!?!
The Nintendo Switch is for playing games, that is what is does best and I think the system is so good, because it just focused on that and nothing more...
Why do i need spotify oder netflix or any of these things on my switch?? I have them on my TV, on my mobile, on my laptop....
11,000 people wanting this is nothing. It certainly doesn’t make this request a ‘popular’ one. It equates to 0.02% of the overall Switch install base or approximately 0.01% of growth for new Spotify users. And it took two whole years to get THAT much support!
As plenty of others have said- if it had integrated functionality like on Xbox and PS4, then it could be cool. But Switch doesn’t have a ‘quick access/ multi-tasking overlay’ button like the PS button or the ‘X’ button, so this is something that wouldn’t just require Spotify to develop but Nintendo would have to integrate new features into the OS just for it to make sense.
I’d file this in the ‘not worth it’ box.
It would be really cool to have spotify on the switch bruh
Nah, as soon as I got YouTube on the Switch, I noticed that I spent the whole evening just watching videos about games instead of actually playing them. So I deleted it right away. Making the system games-only was a right call for Nintendo.
@ryancraddock I think you're drastically misreading their response.
Nowadays statements like "we don’t have any further information to share at the moment" have become the equivalent of a confirmation that a port is coming for the Switch.
That kind of statement has been used for a lot of eventual Switch ports.
And if that wasn't enough, they outright say that they "typically don't announce integrations with third parties in advance" which just means it's coming but they will only announce it right before the release.
@Godzil The way it works on PS4 is that it runs in the background so you can listen while playing games. If Switch was able to do that, which may be tough to swing, it would be very nice.
Switch needs a media player for playing videos from an SD card before Spotify.
You can't even use usb-c dac with switch. Should have that feature first before having spotify. Tho the 3.5mm audio is bad.
Who is trying to use a switch as a glorified IPod?
If anyone has an Xbox, you can hook the Switch's HDMI out into an Xbox and use the companion app to play Switch through Xbox. You can also play Spotify in the background or Pandora while playing Nintendo games. It also lets you control how much game vs music audio gets through. Just posting this here in case anyone really wants spotify on switch and wants a workaround
@BulkSlash I agree with you on the first part. But about the Bluetooth part well... Switch doesnt have bluetooth but there are some things called Bluetooth transmiters I bought one it cost 4$ and you just need to charge it connect it to the aux (audio cable) entry and if you connect it with your headphones you will ear the sound perfectly even when its connected to the tv you will ear it on your headphones
@SigourneyBeaver there is a solution for that... you can upload the videos to youtube privately and then you ca see them in the switch
@loes Yeah I think I might have to bite the bullet and do that. It’s a bit less tidy than having it built it but it will get the job done! 😅
@BulkSlash as I said I have one and I used it today for the first time. Once you connect it, it's perfect so far I haven't detected any delay there is only one problem I haven't yet understood how the connection works (I've already done it twice but haven't understood the trick) so once I find out how to connect fast I'll tell you. In case you're interested I bought mine from Aliexpress I think, it cost me 4 or 5$ I don't think it's too expensive and once you understand how to make the connection it will be really easy!!
@Gravitron it would be awesome if we could hear our music while playing other games.
