It's safe to say the new Pokémon entries on Switch have been a huge success. Sword and Shield broke records across Japan, Europe, and North America on release, and experienced more than six million sales in the first week while becoming the fastest-selling games on Switch.
Focusing on Japan, Famitsu earlier this week revealed the games had shifted 1.3 million physical copies. Now, Dengeki Online has revealed its own figures. The total amount of sales is close to Famitsu's figure, at 1.357 million units. What's more interesting in this particular case is the breakdown of physical sales within this region.
Sword was apparently the most popular version of the game in physical form, shifting 499,753 copies, while Shield managed to sell 347,629 copies. These figures don't include the 254,612 Double Pack sales, and once again this doesn't take into account download sales.
There have been no sales breakdowns like this in Europe or North America just yet, but there have been a number of polls in these regions asking users which version of the game they picked up. We even ran our own poll here on Nintendo Life, so be sure to vote if you haven't already.

I guess the locals prefer Bea over Melony...
I got both and play both at different times.
Mine is Pokemon Sword first for Sirfetch'd. 😀
Will get Pokemon Shield on January 2020.
I have both but I'm playing Shield first.
I thought this was confirmed as soon as sword and shield got announced...
Got Sword for Sirfetch'd alone. Still haven't caught one though.
Plus that I like the design of the Sword Legendary more.
So they haven't broke the record of smash since 500k is less then 1.2 million
Im surpised shield didnt have shieldon and bastiodon. What were they thinking?
Can't hear the swords behind my huge shield
Kinda surprising but in retrospect I regret going Shield because Zacian is way better than Zamazenta competitively
I feel like this is the first Pokemon game in years that have gotten people legitimately arguing over which version is the best. They have really offered some good incentives for the games this time around. I hope future Pokemon games keep uping the incentives, like more varying gym leaders in future entries.
I got shield and my son has sword so we can always trade with each other.
so what, it's just a lame wolf with a sword in the mouth.
@Mr_Persona Fairy/Steel is a ridiculous type combo. It could look like a trash can and I would like it
isn't the alleged "first" named version always the more popular one? has it ever been the other way around?
@e-love interesting, I think you might be right. I’ve only ever bought one Pokémon game... and that was Fire Red over Leaf Green. That will change though as my son is looking his first Pokémon game and I think it’s gonna be Sword.
I regret getting Pokémon Shield honestly. I would have much preferred Sword. But I'm still having a blast. I've completed the story and post story and I'm just trying to catch 'em all now
I prefer the look of the legendary which is why I bought Sword, happy with the choice.
@kopaka actually it has.its in a different article
@e-love I think SoulSilver might've done better than HeartGold but I can't remember.
For either game for me it's not about finishing it's about enjoying the game even if you don't get to the end as fast as other that just crash through it. Doing that you loose the flavor of fun factor.
@patbacknitro18 You must have missed out on the GB/GBC era, who had the best version of Pokemon started some playground fights back in the day.
Honestly I hear "Which would you rather have, sword or shield?" I think "Duh, obviously a sword. I'm not shielding my enemies to death." Swords are immeasurably cooler. An interview with Vlad Tepes I saw a few years back had him answering a bunch of questions regarding weaponry throughout history, and what kept popping up was- NOT SHIELDS- but swords. He said it himself, shields suck. The interview was documented on wax cylinder accompanied by illuminated manuscripts.
@JayJ Hahaha! Yes they did! Good times! XD
@Zyph Who? wasn't the ghost kid the gym leader for Shield?
@BlackTalon2 It's not just Bea and Allister. You fight Gordie in Sword, Melony in Shield.
@Arcamenel I have both but I'm finishing Sword first. And I take my time, I'm past the 4th gym now.
The only problem I have with Sword is this: What is a distinctly Alolan Pokemon (All of the "o-o" dragons; that ending is based directly off of Hawaiian nomenclature) doing traipsing around Galar?
But I still went with Sword over Shield
I went shield knowing it would likely be the less popular one, also I'm not into Sir Farfetch'd, but liked the shield exclusives better.
I bought the Double Pack (physical) but I'm playing Sword first because I want to train Sir Farfetch'd.
@ItalianBaptist I hate Kommo-o, it is sooo annoying, especially with its signature z move. Why does gamefreak love this lizard so much?
