In a recent quick-fire video interview with Overwatch's Game Director Jeff Kaplan, Game Informer asked the Blizzard VP not only which Overwatch character he'd love to see join the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster (which we already know is Tracer), but also which Nintendo character from Masahiro Sakurai's epic brawler would be a good fit were they to join the heroes in Overwatch or the upcoming Overwatch 2.
Of the plethora of possibilities, Kaplan would apparently head to Hyrule if the possibility ever arose and add the Hero of Time himself to Blizzard's team-based shooter. In a wide-ranging 13-minute video which sees Kaplan answer 110 questions, Nintendo fans might want to skip to the 3:10 mark in the video on Game Informer's site where you'll hear this choice quote:
"Nothing would make me happier than putting Link into our game."
To be clear, this came in the context of a rapid-fire barrage of questions and shouldn't be taken as any sort of confirmation or intention of a crossover, but it's interesting to think how Link would fit in with the other heroes in Blizzard's FPS. Link does have form when it comes to first-person shooting, and we're not just talking about Link's Crossbow Training. The green-garbed one frequently switches to first-person when it comes to wielding projectile weapons in his 3D adventures, so of all the characters in Smash Bros. Ultimate, we think he'd fit in quite well in Overwatch.
Which character would you choose for a Smashwatch / Over Bros. crossover? Let us know below.

This seems on par with the Marvel exec wanting Hawkeye to join Smash. I mean, sure, there are worse choices, but why Link? Samus would be a dead ringer for Overwatch's gameplay.
@Savino
Damn, ninja'd!
I’d have to agree with the above, Samus was the first that came to mind. She’d even be able to have the skill to have a miniature wrecking ball like Hammond rolling around and his grapple beam like widowmaker and freeze shot like Mei and rockets like soldier....maybe they’d have to tone her down a bit, she could be a powerhouse.
Ohhh hell yeah! If link gets in there its pre order for me haha.
But any smash character would do even mario haha.
Samus, Link, fox, pit etc.
@Savino I had the same thought but then realised she would probably control a little too similarly to Pharah. Makes sense he would choose Link in that sense, as he would be a far more unique character in terms of gameplay and strategy.
Samus, Captain Falcon and Palutena would all work better than Link.
Samus or Fox would be much better imo.
Samus Aran would be perfect
Samus makes way more sense and should be added a couple months before Prime 4 comes out.
He's 100% seen this LoZ/Overwatch fan crossover https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqsWsagECwY
So cringe. "I'd love to see Tracer in Smash." Now its "I'd love to see Link in Overwatch." Blizzard is desperate for attention, it seems.
Both Samus and Link would fit. Overwatch has plenty melee characters and both Link and Samus have the range to include several abilities. Still not gonna happen though.
Let’s hope to god they say no after that whole Hong Kong fiasco.
SAMUS. SAAAAMUUUUS.
@willi3su he is just answering the questions the guy asked him
Everyone is surprised at no Samus, and they’re right.
But the true correct answer was everyone from DK64.
Would rather have Samus personally.
Link would be the obvious choice, since there are other characters with swords in that game. Samus could come in too
Samus is the obvious choice, though Fox or Link would be cool too. Not that it'll ever happen, would be really cool if it did though.
@Savino agreed
I could see ness being a support character who could use psi life up or thunder
@willi3su ok boomer
@willi3su We're making a mountain out of a molehill now, it seems.
Samus is the better fit, for sure. Link would maybe be more interesting in the lineup and how they'd fit him in.
I truly wonder, given recent events, if Nintendo would be okay with a continued representation in Blizzard's games. The big N seems pretty serious about brand reputation
@shaneandhisdog - I immediately thought this the moment I read his answer. I wouldn't even be surprised.
Couldn’t say Samus when she would be a much better fit. Hell anyone from ARMS would be a better fit.
Seriously? There's only one logical choice and it's not Link, Samus or anyone else.
Inkling/Octoling Boy/Girl (all as different skins of one character) is the natural choice because Splatoon and Overwatch are so closely related to each other.
Don't even think about adding any other characters before adding Splatoon characters to OW. That's a must!
A lot of other people have already said it, but Samus would be a better fit for Overwatch.
On the other hand, Link would work really well in Paladins.
Tencent did want to add Nintendo characters to their games..
@Savino Yeah but there's always a Link reincarnation when the world goes through a crisis so he just makes the most sense.
