Purple Tree Studio has revealed it is bringing its Bomberman-inspired multiplayer title Ponpu to the Switch and multiple other platforms in Q2 2020. Zordix will be responsible for the publishing side of things.
In an official press release, the game was described as being hard to put down:
It’s the kind of game where 1 match easily turns into 20
The game itself requires you to throw and deflect bombs with up to three other people in local play, until you're the last one standing. It intends to offer "everlasting" fun and features a unique art style, as you probably already noticed.
Below is a look at the gameplay:

I feel like this will be better than Super Bomberman R.
I think they shoulda used a different character than a bird. At a glance, I would NEVER have guessed this is Bomberman inspired. The bird should at least be holding a bomb! And there should be some tag line or subtitle that’s more descriptive of the game. Like “Ponpu: Bomb Bird Brawl.” I also think that the black-and-white color scheme seems to make reading the battlefield more difficult...maybe add more color, to distinguish objects from the background at least. I dunno...Just my 2-cents!
Hmmm... I've played lots of bomberman games over the years and love most of them. This game with all the white and black makes me feel like I am playing some really old game. I'd rather have lots of color though. I think this will be a hard pass.
@keihtg If it was too much like Bomberman they would be dismissed as completely derivative or had lawyers on their backs. Maybe a bird is how they want to stand out? This kind of crow thing is not a usual game protagonist.
Bomberman reached it's peak during the SNES time. There's nothing they can do to improve it, re-creating the game in 3d does nothing to the game.
This Bomb-poo game shows how Bomberman should've evolved over the years: keep it 2d but with UbiArt-style graphics. Introduce new fun characters and comical animations.
@SmaggTheSmug I like the idea of a crow, I just think design-wise it needs revision...it’s a cool (albeit plain-looking) crow, but there’s no connection to the bomb aspect. the crows spit out bombs? How? It’s just really disconnected. Maybe the “bombs” should be eggs instead? Idk. I just feel there’s a opportunity there to do something more interesting!
@keihtg If we're delving into that logic then what on earth is going on with Mario? Why a mushroom? If he headbutts bricks to get coins should he not have a hardhat? Why does a flower give him fire power? Etc.
I think the crow design is cool, I like it's simplicity, it's easy to over-complicate these things. I do agree on your point about items not standing out much. Perhaps that is part of the point I don't know, but it's the only negative thing I thought about the visuals. Each to their own I guess!
@Ogbert IIRC the mushroom was originally a piece of meat, but Miyamoto decided that a mushroom would be funnier and less overused. Which may be the reason we have Bomberman with crows here as well.
The crows sold me on this. From the thumbnail I thought they were enemies, but if I can play as a crow who throws bombs, I'm playing it!
