There's now less than a month until Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 releases on Nintendo Switch. Despite the fact that typing its name out takes forever, we're feeling super excited for its release - luckily, Sega has a brand new trailer for us to tide us over.
The trailer's a particularly special one, too, as it's actually the opening movie you'll see when booting up the game. Technically, this is the Japanese version, but considering the game's set in Tokyo it's kind of fitting anyway, right? Check it out above and let us know what you think.
Before you head to our lovingly crafted comment section below, though, we thought it best to remind you that a demo has now appeared for the game on the Japanese eShop. If you have a Japanese account - or if want to set one up - you can go ahead and check out the game ahead of time. Don't worry, you can play the entire thing in English.
Excited for this one? Tell us below.

How does anyone beat Sonic in a straight foot race? This game is clearly broken
@blockfight Restricter plates!
I want to watch this, but these videos are part of what makes getting a flashy new game feel special, so I'm going to resist.
This game made me create a Japanese account.
Can’t wait ... almost entirely for the retro events.
Will they add a typhoon for authenticity?
Look forward to getting rsi tapping away on the 100 meters. Yay
@ThePrince003 wasn't complaining. Was making a joke. Hence the smiley face. I'll do better next time.
@ThePrince003 Haha. No worries. This game wasn't really on my radar. But it looks decent. Might wait for a discount. Could be a good party game.
@ThePrince003 Stop trying to tempt me. Ive way too much in the backlog as it is. Plus Witcher 3 is out next week. My poor wallet.
@blockfight this is why I keep my xbox around. I can just buy games like the winter heavily discounted on the Xbox and keep real money spending for Nintendo first party games which rarely if ever go on sale. I'm talking about you Kirby and arms.
I think this game is looking great. I hope being set in Japan gives them extra motivation to make this game good. I have three other M&S Olympic games (Vancouver, Sochi and Rio), and while I like them, the do feel a little "low effort," especially Rio. But then again, Rio was a late Wii U game, and everything late in that system's life felt low effort. Anyway, I'm hoping this turns out to be a first rate game, rather than mostly a fun novelty.
@TheFox I liked Rio because of the button controls.
Welcome everyone to aperture Olympics. plumbers, heaghogs, koopas, robots, your here because Nintendo and SEGA wanted to place you somewhere to do sports in and this is it so who ready to do sports until they sweat, peed their pants or died from heat stroke or exhaustion.
ha ha. Now you already met one another on the sports car ride over so let me introduce myself, i'm cave cave Johnson, i'm the announcer here.
@sixrings I know the motion controls vs stick and button argument will never end, but I like motion and I thought Sochi did a few clever things with the game pad touch screen. The "Hole in one Curling" could have been a game unto itself. But probably the biggest disappointment with Rio was the "Duel Sports." They were actually pretty good, but there was only three of them. I'm thinking they could have done something really cool with things like BMX and equestrian if they have given them the dream treatment. Now, don't get me wrong, I still liked it (about 90 hours logged on the game) and I think they delivered a game that did a good job with what you expect in an Olympic game, but it didn't surprise me with anything beyond the expected events.
@TheFox I did like the curling. But I do love the option of motion or buttons. Mario party should do the same thing. But I never thought I'd have fun playing curling. On the other hand I never thought Id enjoy rugby
Attention, thieves attempting to break in through the air ducts. I don't know what nonsense you learned on TV, but in real life, air ducts just go to the air conditioning unit. It's also pretty dusty, so if you've got asthma, chances are you're gonna die up there. And we'll be smelling it for weeks because, again, the air ducts aren't a secret entrance, they're how we ventilate the facility.
@sixrings haven't turned my xbox on since i got the Switch. I do miss the cheaper games and almost constant sales. But im enjoying playing switch much more than i ever enjoyed xbox.
@blockfight I too turn on my xbox less and less often which makes me constantly think of selling it. But their sales are great and the minimum 1080p is great.
I looked up the game engine for this and 2020 Tokyo games. Both made by Sega. And both using the hedgehog 2 engine. Rio used hedgehog 1 engine. But Sega 2020 Olympics has more events. Tennis, Bmx, volleyball, baseball, basketball. Am I really going to buy both games or is it that Mario vs sonic might add events later?
Great music!
Feels like they really put some effort into this game.
@sixrings me too
It's the first Olympics at home Japan has had in the modern video games era so of course they are going to go all out on this one. My personal fav is the retro part😍🎮👍🏾
(on an alternative note: Surfing at the Olympics??? 🤨)
