Despite its recent financial woes, Japanese electronics company Sharp has a long and proud history of innovation and has worked with Nintendo in the past on components for its games consoles. However, a new patent hints that Sharp could be looking to enter the gaming space and become a rival to Nintendo.
The patent shows a tablet-like device which is almost all screen, while a gaming control interface bolts onto the side magnetically. Both parts can be used independently from one another, and the patent shows two different designs - one with a straight design, and another with a unique curved design.
There's no sign of any cartridge slot on the device which would suggest it will be a traditional tablet-style experience, possibly powered by Google's Android platform, or perhaps even Microsoft Windows. Sharp has manufactured Android devices in the past, which lends some credence to this assumption.
However, it could be that this device will never see the light of day; companies take out patents all the time but do not put them into active production.
Still, given Sharp's resurgent stance in recent months thanks to investment from Foxconn, it would be interesting to see what it could do in the gaming space with such a system. Could this be a challenge to Switch? Perhaps not in the short-term, but the rise of cloud-based gaming via phones and tablets would certainly make such a product viable.
Who knows; given the company's prior business links with Nintendo, it could even influence the successor to the Switch in some way. Let us know your thoughts with a comment.

"Could this be a challenge to the Switch?"
No, lol.
Sharp has ties to nintendo in the liquid crystal display market...although that means nothing.. the unit is one at this point I wouldn't worry about. Like Stadia....not a threat.
I love it when you guys find stuff like this and say things like this "However, a new patent hints that Sharp could be looking to enter the gaming space and become a rival to Nintendo."
After trying Apple Arcade for a month, I know there is STILL a LOT to do before phone gaming will be as good as even handheld gaming on a 20 year old GameBoy.
Controls are still lacking, gameplay is simple, games are short, your hands are always on the screen, etc. I already stopped my Apple Arcade subscription. And I won't get Google Stadia at all.
@Fiyaball Damnit I didn't see that one haha. That's even worse. I have a feeling I could take a mini display and duct tape bluetooth controllers to it and NL would make an article about it and consider my device a "rival" that could "challenge" the switch.
You guys reeeeallly set the bar low haha.

I'll skip the Magic 8-Ball and just go with a, "Outlook not so good"
Look at how disgusting the controller looks
Here I got one for your next article. It makes home consoles more portable! Pretty sure this could make the ps4 and xbox challenge the switch in the portable realm.

I wish a competitive handheld would come out from somebody but probably not
I’m struggling with a sharp printer migration for month, at work.
They need 3 try to find their right hands, I’m confident they will be not the slightest be a menace...
@sanderev I'm seriously jealous of all the cool exclusive games Apple Arcade seems to be getting. I bet they'd probably play nicely with one of those phone peripherals that add physical sticks and buttons.
Sadly, I have no investment in the Apple ecosystem, and that's not about to change.
This looks bad, why is the controller on the left side with all the controls of it on the corners of the controller, that just sounds uncomfortable to use.
It kind of reminds me of how some of our politicians want to split tech giants, like MS, Apple, Facebook, Google, etc. All video game consoles, computers (pc, mac, or whatever else), web platform developers (Google, facebook, etc.), and tech co.s in general always have the threat of competition. The question is an "if some co. taps into that competition", or when.
I don't believe this will kill, or really even hinder the Switch. Give some possibly good ideas for other co.s to copy? Yes, that's certainly plausible.
Only time will really tell.
LOL. Using Crash, with its painful mediocrity and microtransactions as a "selling point" when we have Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Ho, ho, ho.
Yes, it's going to rival Nintendo as much as the NGage did.
That's one of the worst controllers I've ever seen, how are you meant to control a game with that?
Can you play botw on it?
Probably only a tablet with buttons for better control
Every single time a company tries its own game console, you guys are like "oh noez, the Switch may have some troublez!". We all know it's going to be crap, lol
Red Alert over - No threat. Whew! That was a close one.
What will it run? If it is more Android software than there is nothing to make this stand out and the depth of quality games would be seriously lacking. Also Sharp is not the company they used to be so be clear about the actual ownership. Foxconn owns Sharp now and is simply a shell now for Foxconn to push its own products using a known name.
Looks like a Wonderswan on steroids
and with mobile free to pay "games"
Joy
This thing wont even threaten the Vita
Portable rivals have always failed because they lack a key ingredient they’ll never have: Nintendo games.
The only way this device won't totally flop is if it's compatible with some kind of third party ecosystem (Android, Stadia, etc).
Nope. Can’t see it at all. Clutching at straws much?
Nintendolife loves these stories. It's a weird fascination. Especially when they counter the same article with a 'lol this handheld sucks' article a few months later.
Everyone is a wannabe console manufacturer these days.
No. Thank you, have a good day
Hey, at least it isnt some powerful $1000 Android phone with $150 detachable controller accessories that tries to be a "serious" Switch competitor by being good at handling PUBG/Fortnite Mobile.
No one is going to seriously challenge Nintendo - Nintendo has Mario, Pokemon, Fire Emblem, Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Animal Crossing, Xenoblade, Super Smash Brothers, and a plethora of other first and second party exclusive franchises that lock it into place.
Any new challenger is not going to be able to stand up to that. Even if they release a high quality machine - games are what sell the hardware - so long as Nintendo releases decent quality hardware the games will push Nintendo ahead of any rival that lacks that solid first party support. And Nintendo has the most iconic, most known, most established first party support in the industry.
Even Sony didn’t want to compete with the sheer selling power of Nintendo IP in this market. Good luck.
@Dreamerswake Sharp have even less chance than Sony, so there i no way this would be a competitor to anything.
Sharp isn't that common in Europe anymore, and were looked as a cheap brand in 1980's.
Samsung were also a cheap brand band back then, but changed to the better during 1990's.
@Fiyaball Yep.
Good luck with that, Sharp.
Sharp doesn't do gaming hardware, they won't go against Nintendo.
That must be one helluva strong magnet, otherwise that little sucker is pinging off every ten seconds. And where does your other hand go? It already feels cumbersome without even touching it.
@Fiyaball To challenge any of Nintendo's consoles you need alot of good games, hardware on it's own won't stand a chance
if anyone could challenge the Switch then it have to be Sony or Microsoft, due to having alot of Playstation/Xbox games/Ips they can use.
@MrHaggi "Probably only a tablet with buttons for better control"
So, pretty much the Switch?
@Ralizah you're not missing much, I did the same as @sanderev and cancelled before the free trial was over.
Compared to the indie offerings in the eshop, there would be no value in moving to the iOS ecosystem for gaming.
@sanderev Based on genre. I'd say lost frontier is as good as wargroove outside the custom downloadable levels.
Puzzle, strategy (pro strategy football is best on mobile), and retro RPGs/roguelikes can be done pretty well. I feel final fantasy dimensions was better than Chrono trigger, sequel obviously worse than Chrono Cross 😂.
@ClassSonicSatAm PC Master race homie. Eff yo bloodstained slowdown switch.
@Dreamerswake
Only Sony managed to even take on Nintendo
The PSP sold 80 million units, which is in no way a failure.
The Vita on the other hand,
