As good as the online component is in Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, it's no fun if you can't keep up with the competition. If you own this game, you might have found yourself struggling to cross the finish line from time to time when you are racing against other players. That's why Beenox has now decided to roll out skill-based matchmaking.
This follows on from the release of last week's Spooky Grand Prix. The bone-chilling Halloween update adds a new track, new characters, new items and a new challenge type to the game. It also makes a number of finer adjustments, which you can be seen in our previous post.
How has your experience been online since the release of skill-based matchmaking? Tell us below.

I haven't played the game yet but I find this idea interesting. This sounds a lot like just having a ranking system. Why not do what other games do, have a ranked mode and casual mode?
Oh goody! My favourite races online are coming against equally matched opponents. It’s depressing when racing against those gamers that know how to perform frame perfect manoeuvres, and when you’re way better than someone, you feel kinda bad for them, so a matching on skill system sounds great! (If it works properly, anyway)
@PBandSmelly hecc you talking about
@PBandSmelly you can't directly buy skins tho and it's easy as heck to get Wumpa Coins. Especially now that you get x2 Wumpa Coins on the weekends offline and online.
I wish more games had a ranking system like this and Splatoon 2. Especially Smash, I haven't played with randos in months because I'm too scared of the inevitable beat-down I'll receive. Let me play with others who are just as bad as me!
I'm hoping Craptivision in their money grabbing ways will release a complete version of the game next year, when all these tracks have been added, as I can't afford the game at the moment and it would be nice to get the game eventually and not have to download loads of updates.
Ah, man. I thought this was going to say they've added a weapon-free race mode. I would love that. It's really disappointing that you can lead in CTR, get shot, then before you can move, get shot again, then before you can move, get shot yet again for the third time in a row. Now you're in last place, and everyone can be out of sight before you're finally moving again. That always feels so cheap. I'd be ok with a temporary invincibility so you can't get shot more than twice in a row.
@PBandSmelly 20 bucks I'm agreeing with you, but it's closer to $40 US, or at least $40. I'm really embarrassed to say, but I wanted to have all the spectral paint colors, and I did spend $20, and it wasn't enough to get it all them. When you see people who seem to have all the awesome stuff in the first days, they also have to buy older stuff on still on pitstop just to access the newer stuff. So, it's well over $40 to do that. Don't tell anyone I spent the money
@Woomy_NNYes I bought the game for 25 quid second hand, so I bought enough coins to get the game upto a triple A retail price and stopped there. I nearly have all items, just gonna buy the Back N Time ones I missed along with next months stuff, then the Spyro stuff with the December update. I think this is how they will bring them back, anyway.
Awesome. I hate being last almost every time. I love the game. Better than MK(to me) but unfortunately loading times are still long.
The hard-to-get skins and other parafernalia don't interest me, as long as they don't affect the core gameplay. Others are easily unlockable.
I hope the game thrives more. It deserves it. Along MK, the best kart racer out there at the momrnt(to me).
Interested in Garfield though
@PBandSmelly I find absolutely no issue with having micro-transactions for cosmetics in game, as long as the game is made excessively grindy for those who prefer to play rather then spend extra cash. The extra cash encourages the devs to release extra content so it is a win win.
Nice, but I still would like to spend less than ten minutes to make only one online race.
Regarding the new matchmaking experience this gp, i don't get crushed as often, I've won more, and made podium more. So, online seems better, I guess.
However, i don't know how much of that has do to the new skill based matchmaking algorithm. In the US, before spooky gp update, daily nitro points challenges reset at 8pm eastern time. And every night from 8pm-11pm, it seemed like all the hardcore ctr enthusiasts flooded online matchmaking, making for a pretty brutal cutthroat experience, killing much of the fun for that period. If you raced outside of that window, it was a more enjoyable experience. But now the daily nitro challenge reset moved to 10am, and i think that's has gotten rid of the evening rush of brutal cutthroat racers, making evening online racing a more balanced experience. So, i can't tell how much of the online matching change comes from a skill matching algorithm. Unless, moving the nitro challenge reset to morning IS the algorithm.
MMR is a very welcome addition! Don't have to worry about not finishing a race because of some Grand Master league type wrecking everyone now. Next, they should focus on dedicated servers so lobbies don't get inexplicably killed seconds before a race starts.
Now to the trolls/purists/people who don't understand fair business: the MTX are completely optional, wumpa coins earned are plentiful now and have been since day one (even moreso now), stop complaining about something that doesn't affect you. Play online for a half hour every day (not much to ask for) and you'll earn enough to buy a significant amount from each event. @PBandSmelly
@CodyMKW this CTR has everything the original had, and more, way more.
Objectively wrong, here.
Anyways, will this skill based matchmaking even do anything?
People can team up with friends from the main menu, then search for a game.. So we'll still have stacked games
Then there's the fact that if host doesn't get track they want in the vote cycle, they'll back out which then disconnects everyone else from the lobby
Nobody cares. They should rather add a option to open a lobby as host because most lobbies I join disband after every damn map and I cant even grind my daily bonus... Playing online is a chore right now.
