Two of the biggest and best online shooters available on Nintendo Switch might be about to join forces, should the findings of a data miner be anything to go by.
Hypex, one of social media's most popular Fortnite leakers, has revealed that items potentially relating to Nintendo's Splatoon franchise have been discovered within the game's files. A new Skin (outfit) and a new Back Bling have been found with the word 'SquidKid' in the title, as mentioned in the tweet below. What else could 'SquidKid' realistically be referring to?
While the idea of a Fortnite x Splatoon crossover might seem a bit out there at first glance, it would actually make a whole lot of sense. Over recent months, Fortnite has had crossovers coming out of its proverbial backside - right now, there's a Borderlands event taking place - and having Nintendo's popular shooter be present in the game could do wonders for both titles.
From Nintendo's point of view, having Fortnite's ridiculously large audience become more aware of Splatoon can only be a great thing, and the move could drive previously unwilling Nintendo fans to see what Fortnite's actually like, too - how often do you see Nintendo fans hating on Fortnite just because it's 'mainstream'?
Of course, until either Nintendo or Epic Games confirm the existence of such a crossover, make sure to treat the whole situation as a rumour. Naturally, we'll update you should the crossover be officially confirmed.
Would you like to see Splatoon items appear in Fortnite? Are you a fan of both games? Whatever your opinion, let us know in the comments below.

Leave our Inklings alone you Fortnite slags.
Please NOOOOooooo!!! Inklings supposed to keep it fresh!
Equally this could also be the Fortnite team just having some fun with filenames. As I recall, the filenames 'cattus' and 'doggus' were for the giant robot and monster, nothing to do with cats and dogs. Something tells me if there were a Splatoon-Fortnite crossover it would be more than just two cosmetic items too.
How would this get through with Ninty’s usual stance on IP? ... If it were true, then it is to be understood it was on Epic Games terms. Their realm. Not Sony’s, Not MS’s, just Epic Games and Nintendo agreed. No need to raise the behavior to console wars levels when they are the ones who own their independent servers.
Please God no
No complaints from me. I'm not a fan of Fortnite but if it brings more attention to the sublime Splatoon 2,then that can only be a good thing, surely? I have a few mates who game on Xbox One, Battlefield is their thing and they see Splatoon as nothing more than a fun looking but shallow shooter aimed at kids, despite never playing it and me telling them otherwise. Spend some proper time with Splatoon and it shows itself to be as deep, if not deeper than most of the popular shooters out there.
NOOOOO!
. . . And that 4th paragraph is totally me.
I’d finally be convinced to spend money on this game, if it meant Splatoon stuff (if it’s well-developed and implemented, that is).
Please God no.
These crossovers are always promotional. If it gets more people interested in Splatoon, why not?
Could be fun. Why not
These comments are even more immature than the little kids who play Fortnite.
I don't hate Fortnite because it's "mainstream." I hate Fortnite because I don't know how to play the flippin' game. I tried to play it, and I just couldn't get it.
I don't understand why people would say no to this. It's cool if you hate Fortnite, but why would you want to deny the Splatoon franchise the chance to be seen by literally tens of millions of people?
To be honest, it is possible. PlayStation has it's own skin for when users have paid for the playstation online service, so what is stopping them doing the same for switch online? It would still be exclusive to switch users but visible to players on the other consoles/pc... I'm fine with that.
Or it could be something in the game called Squid Kid that is a nod to Splatoon but not an actual, official promotion.
@Metrazi As an NSO exclusive, that'd be so cool!
I don't dislike Fortnite because it's popular. I like plenty of popular things.
I dislike the gameplay of Fortnite, the free-to-play model of game design in general, and the humor of the game.
I don't mean to be THAT guy but...no? At least it makes sense, they are both third person shooters with wacky themes and funny characters messing around
No. Keep our Inklings off the hook. Don’t let this happen.
SquidKids are shoes from Splatoon, not Back Bling.
Please no, I’m begging you.
@Heavyarms55
Fortnite is an example of free-to-play done right. All premium content is purely cosmetic and offers no gameplay advantages. There also aren't any timers that arbitrarily restrict the amount you can play. Plus you can earn some in-game cosmetic upgrades for free (granted you need to put a ton of time into it).
Obviously, a lot of people still spend way too much on the game, but it doesn't seem all that exploitative compared to most mobile games.
I think it would be smart if this was a multi platform thing not just Nintendo
Why not? If there are skins, how will the sizes work? A Zelda crossover would make more sense
Probably just file names, if not then have fun fortnight players.
This must not happen fort nite was just starting to die
@OorWullie so what you're saying is that you want Splatoon to join Fortnite so it will be viewed as even more childish by you friends?
@BENDsli Haha, you're right with that. I was making 2 seperate points but both add up to making Splatoon 2 more kiddy than ever.
@RushDawg There is no such thing as a free-to-play game done right. Not in my book. The system has warpped game design in a very bad way. Unlockables are becoming a thing of the past. Instead of unlocking things by playing the game, you just buy them. The whole system is designed to milk money from players who lack self control and kids who don't know any better. It's dirty and underhanded.
What you compared Fortnite to is like comparing stepping in dog poop to falling face first into dog poop. Yeah one is a whole heck of a less of a problem, but the fact that stepping in dog poop is looked at as done right shows just how nastily the industry has been twisted.
ew l hope they don't have Splatoon skins
feels like epic games are just doing this so it can be more popluar again.
fortnite actually sucks and a partnership with a good game such as Splatoon would bring all of the fortnite sweats over and kill the game and I don't think Nintendo would want one of there best games to die.
