Versus Evil and Breadcrumbs Interactive have revealed that Yaga, an action RPG, will be launching on Nintendo Switch this November.
The game tells the story of Ivan, a one-handed blacksmith with incredibly bad luck, and is said to be crafted around a "darkly funny narrative". Ivan must take on the impossible tasks given to him by the tzar, while a mysterious witch, Baba Yaga, watches over his fate.
You'll find a variety of nefarious monsters and legends on your journey, all of which have been inspired by Slavic folk tales, and it's up to you to use your weapons to get by. Speaking of weapons, the game features a "deep crafting system" which will help you to create lightning hammers, hookshot pitchforks, and all sorts of similarly deadly melee weapons.
Steve Escalante, General Manager of Versus Evil, has shared the following in a press release:
"Yaga's unique mix of traditional rogue-like and RPG mechanics, combined with its eye-catching art makes it a game that’s hard to put down. Presenting an ARPG within the rich Slavic folklore and exploring the history it represents is another distinguishing factor to Yaga. We can’t wait for gamers to play Yaga this November."
We don't have a specific date for this one yet, but will you be keeping an eye out for the game's release this November? Tell us below.

Anything with Slavic humour definitely seems worth a look in😄
It goes on the vaguely interested list but there’s a lot of games in front of it....
I kinda like the look and the play style of this, but...
"Yaga's unique mix of traditional rogue-like and RPG mechanics, combined with its eye-catching art makes it a game that’s hard to put down."
That feeling when developers beat their own chest...
"We from Coca Cola advise you to choose us"
That is something that I definitely DON'T like. Let's just wait and see what actual, professional reviewers say about your game, mr. Escalante, and then WE will decide if your game is hard to put down or not.
yikes Slavic!! ))))
@ThanosReXXX Agree that a touch of humility would be a better look. That said, it can be surprisingly tricky to write decent ad copy — and I’m guessing the core development staff either isn’t close to the publicity, and/or PR isn’t one of their main skill sets.
Just my opinion. In any case, the game looks intriguing. From a macro perspective, it strikes me as odd that this genre has come to be known as “action RPG” — considering what role-playing originally meant, back in the days of tabletop D&D. Ah well, it’s just a label after all.
VS_EVIL, who is publishing this game, is the company responsible for the DISASTROUS Switch port of Pillars of Eternity. I would advise anyone considering this to wait until well after release to pick it up.
For my part, I am boycotting this company entirely.
@Dr_Awkward came on here to say just that. I ended up getting a refund for pillars not every was so lucky.
@Bones4241 I, too, was lucky enough to get a refund, but Nintendo was surprisingly grumpy about it:
N: Refunds are not guaranteed. I don't have to do this for you.
Me: You sold me a literally broken product.
N: So? Read the legal agreement you accepted when you used our eshop. We don't have to give you a refund.
Me: If you don't give me a refund, I will ask my credit card company for a chargeback.
N: If you do that, we will terminate your account [with thousands of dollars of eshop purchases across several platforms.]
Me: Don't make me take you to small claims court.
N: You agreed to this [sucker. Good luck in court.]
This interaction has had me seriously rethinking my decision to be all-digital. I know that my next purchase, The Witcher, will be on cart.
And before anyone says, "hurr durr, read the reviews before you buy a game," NONE of the reviews in the first weeks mentioned any of the game breaking bugs. Not even the one on NL.
@Dr_Awkward fortunately in Australia Nintendo must provide refunds for anything on the eshop. One area where our game related laws are actually consumer first lol
@ThanosReXXX Hey, that's not the developer speaking.
I am from the development team (Breadcrumbs) Steve is part of the publisher team (Versus Evil). Of course the publisher will say good things aboit the game they're publishing, but we (Breadcrumbs) are not being unhumble...
Thanks for the interest and I hope you'll like the game!
@Dr_Awkward we do have the same publisher, but I assure you the development teams are completely independent from one a another.
While I understand your frustration with the Pillars situation, I would kindly ask not to punish us, a small developer on our first release for something that we're not responsible of.
I hope you'll look at our game with different eyes when it launches.
@sfb Yes, the development staff (Breadcrumbs) is busy making the game, while the PR is handled by our publisher
Also, related to RPG label: we have lots of dialogue and encounters in the game, where you get to role-play one of four different personalities: Aggressive, Selfish, Righteous or Foolish. Being consistent in your personality will give different bonuses to your character and result in different reaction.
I do think the RPG label applies, and I think you'll agree after playing the game.
This game looks quite interesting... will definitely be keeping an eye on it.
@CatalinZZ Thanks for replying to my comment! And congratulations on the game.
And thanks for telling me about the personality system; I wasn’t aware of that. That really reflects the original sense of role-playing.
@sfb Agreed, and far as I'm concerned, it's just a matter of wording: I'm a sales & marketing professional myself, and I would never speak in facts in certain situations.
Just adding a few words to soften the tone might have already worked in their favor. For example: just adding "we truly feel that... " in front of the whole "Yaga's unique mix of traditional rogue-like and RPG mechanics, combined with its eye-catching art makes it a game that’s hard to put down." might have already made it look better in my opinion.
And perhaps tone it down even further by saying "CAN make it a game that's hard to put down", seeing as it's not a fact that everyone likes this type of game, or the style that it offers.
Developers/publishers being proud of their product and standing behind it is perfectly fine, and I actually would expect nothing less, but obviously it's not always that simple.
@CatalinZZ Very decent of you to come to the comments section and join in the conversation to explain some things. Much appreciated. Your game will definitely be put on my wish list, so that I won't forget about it.
By the way: any chance of a physical release at some point?
@ThanosReXXX we don't have anything to announce in the short term for physical release, but it's something we'd LOVE to do later on. We're discussing with our publisher to see how and when we could do something like this.
@CatalinZZ Good to know. I'll be keeping a close eye on it, then.
@CatalinZZ
Sorry, but I won't buy anything published by vs evil after the up of pillars. Choose a better publisher.
@Bones4241 It's entirely your choice to do so. Honestly, I know I can only convince some people to give us a chance ¯\__(ツ)__/¯
Looks nice. But its rogue.
