We recently sat down to try out a preview build of The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt on Switch and just yesterday we published our hands-on impressions. Spoilers! It's pretty remarkable. Our friends over at Digital Foundry also got the chance to sit down with senior producer at CD Projekt RED Piotr Chrzanowski and they gave him a grilling on specifics concerning the game's complex porting process.
Saber Interactive is the studio responsible for the port at large, with Chrzanowski and CDPR 'providing guidance' according to the article. He revealed that the port has been in development for a relatively small amount of time given the open-world RPG's epic scope and the considerable constraints placed upon it by the Switch's mobile chipset. When asked how long the process had taken, he gave the following response:
Over a year now. Well it depends on whether you want to add the business stuff, but then I would say it's around 12 months at this point.
He went on to discuss how the team has used some typical tricks seen in many of the Switch's 'miracle' ports, including reducing texture quality and using dynamic resolution in certain circumstances (temporarily reducing the screen resolution during computationally busy situations in order to maintain a solid framerate). In other areas, though, there were surprisingly few changes:
Geometry is the same. I think we dropped the LOD 0s in the cutscenes in most places, because of the memory constraints again. In some of those at least, we had to balance where it made sense and doesn't make sense. But overall, yeah, basically, we changed most textures but models, we haven't changed much. There were some slight adjustments in some cases, but nothing [much] I would say. If you compare frame-by-frame, you won't see much of a difference besides things that are obvious, like foliage density.
Elsewhere Chrzanowski discusses how ambient occlusion now features in the Switch build (it was absent from the E3 version). The interview covers various technical aspects of the port and we thoroughly recommend checking it out if you can't get enough of the nitty gritty details. Regardless of the clever tricks employed to get Switcher (as we learned it's called at CDPR) running without sacrificing the effect of its huge open world, it's mightily impressive that its taken Saber Interactive only 12 months to whip it into shape on Switch. We can't wait to give the final build a whirl when it launches on 15th October.
Reckon you could squeeze The Witcher 3 onto a mobile chipset in just one year? Pah, child's play - why not do Red Dead Redemption 2 at the same time on a second monitor? While we idly consider all the other 'impossible' ports we'd queue up on Switch, why not leave a little comment in the usual place?

Just imagine what we can have in the next 12 months that is currently being worked on! This is very encouraging
crickets - Rockstar
Wonderful.
Under a year they achieved this technical marvel! That's impressive to say the least.
Take my money for the sweat(not being lazy & cheap), dedication, relentless, ambitious and devoted experts in your craft, to porting this over to the switch with the help of saber interactive. I say well-done, BRAVO!! from a hardcore ps4 player, but love my switch😊
Regardless of how you think this version compares to other ones, sometimes you just have to shrug and say 'well done'
The Switch will always be fighting a losing battle on the tech front against the other consoles of this gen, making it all the more vital that ports are of a high standard.
To get this game to this level in 12 months and running on Switch sets a benchmark over what devs should be aiming for. It's really incredible and well worth supporting CDPR with my hard earned cash.
Sounds impressive! Now I'll have to go watch the Digital Foundry video, yay!
This is really impressive. Yeah the game took a pretty serious hit visually, but to be able to run this game on a phone chipset is amazing. I won't be double dipping, but if you haven't played the game yet, I highly recommend it.
@hitherehello : They could port III, Vice City, and San Andreas (hell, Rockstar can get away with selling them separately) and they will still sell like hot cakes.
Even having GTA IV and its expansions would be a boon for the Switch as it would be the first time that they would be available on portable hardware.
But what I especially want is a port of Bully, with the enhanced A/V quality of the Xbox/PC versions with the motion controls of the Wii version.
If Nintendo wasn't a cheapskate and added 4gb ram extra memory the Switch would've done it better and more life to it. I still don't get it why they went so cheap with only 4gb ram. ... we're not in 2012 anymore when on PC games it was ok...Switch is like 2 year old or something... Well it's their own fault. It's what it is.
@Alucard83 2012? My laptop apparently came with 4 Gb on board in 2015. As for Switch, reports have it that Nintendo even considered 2 Gb at first; Capcom allegedly convinced them to bump this up. Risky, but considering that even last year's Chinese flagman like Xiaomi Pocophone started out at 6 Gb, I don't hurry to judge the mobile hardware spendings of a company that isn't quite known for selling its consoles at a loss. Or for bothering much with spec numbers - that last time when their spec numbers got outsold by a DVD player was a rather definitive mentality changer.
So, a year of how many programmers and business suits working on this... how many man-hours? And what's the rate for programmers these days?
I guess I don't begrudge the (full) price of some games.
Now I can get behind sacrifices to cutscenes. It's not like you play them lol.
@hitherehello They can shove their micro transactions up their Electronic Arts.
I don't want to hear any excuses anymore about how games can't come to the Switch.
I thought Nintendo converted wind water to HD in like 4 months. So in one year Nintendo could make punch out galaxy and wario land shake it. Or galaxy 2, Federation force, and thousand year door. The possibilities are endless.
Not that surprising really. It's a port of a game, not a total remake nor even any new features. Things like voice acting, game design, localization etc are all already done. It's just a matter of rebuilding the programming for the Switch.
So much coverage of this game!
Day 1 purchase physical. I have had this on my ps4 shelf for months if not years...and now I’ll finally get to play this. Just can’t get into games anymore that I can’t take with me. Switch has ruined me for traditional console gaming
@Heavyarms55 That's a whole lot of testing to do though. Think about it, with every minuscule change to draw distance or such, the Switch could potentially aim for a more stable frame rate. Not to mention that they have to make sure it runs in both docked and portable mode so that's 2 whole different benchmarks. I have every faith that it'll be a great port but since I have the PC version (and a laptop that actually runs Hairworks), I won't double dip, especially now that I can mod Cavill's face into the game for added hilarity.
From what I've read about the Witcher 3 port, it seems like it's going to be a good one. Makes me wonder if they could potentially bring Cyberpunk 2077 over as well. That would be amazing if they could!
@nessisonett Oh yeah, I'm not saying it's no work, just way way less than making or even remaking a full game.
Give them another 12 months, it will be even better. Just wait for the patch a year from now and compare with the release version.
Look at Doom, the patch that came a year later improved a lot.
@Heavyarms55 You should read how ports are done:

I’m going to double dip just to support it. I loved it on the PS4, but I really want to send a message to 3rd parties that the Switch is a welcoming home for quality ports. The gameplay on YouTube looked really good.
However, this port brings up the question “ How did ARK go so wrong?” 😆
I am so ready for this along with GRID, LM3, Doom eternal, Links Awakening, Aliens, Ori and The BF more games I’ve forgotten about, my massive massive massive backlog that includes Fire Emblem, Cuphead, Hollow Knight. I’m set for life. I’ve never been inundated with games like this before. GREAT TIMES!
Just finished preloading The Witcher 3. Hopefully, Shadow of Mordor is ported later down the line.
Cool. But 540p in portable mode is a Downer.
