It just keeps getting better and better for Fire Emblem: Three Houses. After recent success in the UK and Japanese charts, last week the NPD revealed the Switch release was the largest launch for a Fire Emblem game in US history.
Now, Nielsen company SuperData has revealed the game sold an estimated 800,000 digital units worldwide in July. This makes Fire Emblem: Three Houses the best digital launch in the franchise's history. In the same month, it was also the third best-selling digital game globally – right behind Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII. In first place was Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto V.
In our review, we gave Fire Emblem: Three Houses nine out of ten stars and said it set a new standard for strategy RPG and would stand as a highlight in the series for years to come.

Wow, 800K digital sales is impressive! There were a lot of great games on Wii U that struggled to reach 800K sales total.
I did end up buying digital because Amazon never shipped my copy... It is really weird, I've only had this issue with Amazon twice in almost 10 years of use. You know what the one other item I pre-ordered from them and they ran out of was?
Fire Emblem Awakening
@Heavyarms55 ironic, what does Amazon have against Fire Emblem?!? 😜
Not surprised, considering how high up the game stayed on the charts in several regions. Now let's just hope it has legs. It'd be cool if the game does 5+ million in sales.
Yep... downloaded it day one👍
Adding in the awesome US physical sales and good-great sales in other countries I'm thinking Three Houses is nothing short of a roaring success! As a long time FE fan it's quite emotional to see my favorite series, once on the brink of death, become so popular.
Great it's doing so well; the game well and truly deserves it on it's sheer quality alone. Hope this means more FE on the Switch in the future, although hopefully addressing some of the minor criticisms (how it easy it is, some of the ugly textures and modelling and the framerate dips in both docked and handheld mode).
Ultimately passed on the game, too much focus on the school setting for my taste and the massive amount of fluff between chapters turned me right off.
I'll stick to the older games. Less waifu shenanigans there.
Black Ops III? Do you mean Black Ops IIII? Also GTA V again?! Why? Anyway, this is fantastic news for a fantastic game!
@AnnoyingFrenzy Whoops, thanks for pointing that out. Fixed!
GTA's "Diamond Casino & Resort" update got released around the same time, so that's probably why.
@Liam_Doolan No problem! Also, I did forget about that update so I guess that makes more sense now, but I find it hard to believe over 800,00 people bought GTA V just to gamble. What am I saying, of course, people would do that.
There’s SO much I dislike about this game, but the core loop is just so strong that I couldn’t rate it anything less than a 9/10. My review would be one sentence, basically “it’s s*!t, but I love it.”
This is the first game I have played in the series and I can confidently say I don’t feel let down by it all. It’s great to see awesome games do well!
@Browny While the game does heavily encourage you to partake in fluff, you can command it to automatically do those parts, skipping you through each month in a matter of minutes so you can play the story missions. So if that's a big turn-off for you, don't count it out completely.
@Browny What NerdyBoutKirby said above. I dislike these classes etc but you can skip them, so it's not a big deal. I will buy the game in the future because I had so many games on July-August and most probably after completing Astral Chain and Daemon x Machina.
The success of this game is well deserved. Although I went for physical and got collectors edition. Could not resist that steelbook
Well I am not surprised, the Switch is by far the most popular Nintendo console for digitally purchased games and it isn't even close. The 3DS wasn't exactly a console that everyone liked to download all their retail games on and the Wii U never got a proper Fire Emblem game.
I see that one troll that kept insisting this game was doing terribly in every other comment section is nowhere to be found.
@AnnoyingFrenzy I'm not sure if anyone else said this but the summer sales always bump these numbers. GTA V was like $20 of less on the Canadian PS4 store. That game has incredible legs and will go down as one of the most impactful games ever. It's been out for years but a sale helps it roar back to the top of the charts.
Fantastic news! It would be nice to see the combined digital and physical sales worldwide. But it must have sold over a million already.
I think I must be on the closing few chapters on FE now and I havnt been able to put it down. Clocking on for 70 hours now and that's amazing for my short attention span. Until about 5 chapters ago i wasnt finding it difficult at all but it ramps up at the end for sure. How anyone can complete this with permadeath active is beyond me. This,so far is my GOTY🥇
My first Fire Emblem game and loving it. It made me curious how the other games are like. I hope to seek them out in the future.
@Patron awaiting your thoughts.
Downloaded it as well.
@Browny It tones down the waifu element massively from Fates and Awakening. Supports tend to be more serious and connected to plot. School element is done well as setup..
@nkarafo I really like the classes, but it was a good call to allow the player to skip them. For people which do not like that and for repeated playthroughs.
Good news!!!
Im stil waiting to buy it.
I buy it after astrial chain,
Want to take my time with that game as well
About to start my second play through of this, with permadeath on! Absolutely hooked on this game, I've put many many hours into to it so far.
Playing it whenever I get chance!!
Gives me hope for the franchise to continue now, thought the franchise might have silently disappeared, so happy this game is doing well 🙂
Physical is usually my preference. Especially for big rpgs as I usually play them in one long stretch rather than a game you dip into.
@Browny I didn't really like the "exploring" part but still absolutely love the game. You can just do battles instead of the "school bit" so can pretty much skip that part of the game entirely and not miss out much
Finally going to get my copy this Sunday. So excited to jump into it! Between this, DQ 11 next month and Witcher the month after I think I’m set for a while. No idea how I’m going to squeeze in Pokémon.
@Heavyarms55 I recently had Catherine's limited edition cancelled on me from Amazon. I was so furious when they cancelled because all the preorders were sold out at all local stores. It's caused me a bunch of problems trying to get a copy now. $5 credit wasn't going to cut it I tell you.
Did anyone else also notice that if a character dies with perma death on, u can still see that character in the school and still talk to them?
@Heavyarms55 I had similar issues tracking down a copy of Three Houses, all the stores I went to said they were not sent many copies to begin with, which is strange considering it was one of the Switch's big releases this year.
@NintenDan_ I didn't check the local stores, I was lazy and didn't want to go out. lol It's why I ordered online in the first place.

I am one of those digital sales. Great game, nice to see it succeed
"In franchise's history"! So it had a bigger digital launch than the NES, SNES, GBA, GC, DS, Wii games? Who'd have thought it... I mean, to be fair, it's only competing with the 3DS games on that front, on a console with a greater digital focus, so it's kind of an inevitability.
Great game......now drop Path of Radiance & Radiant Dawn into the engine and re-release them as 1 game so everyone can play them!
I think the people are ready. It's time for an Ike comeback!
@AnnoyingFrenzy the data is revenue based so while that includes digital game sales it also includes dlc, microtransactions, season passes, 'surprise mechanics' etc. A good chunk of GTA's amount, while it still clearly sells units digitally, is most likely not unit sales but in-game purchses.
I bought it physical on day 1 and it is my game of the year pick so far in 2019. The hype is legitimate. What a great game.
@gamer95 and what has that got to do with my comment and reply to @AnnoyingFrenzy? It didn't sell all those in July did it!
To be fair this article talks about being 'third best selling digital game' in July when it should really have stated third highest revenue in July behind BLOPS IIII and GTAV. All I am saying is it is perhaps probable, though not impossible, the top 2 sold less units in JULY than the stated 800,000 for FE3H but raked in more overall revenue through other avenues like buying casino money in GTAV!
@toffeecrit Hey thanks for the info, that makes a lot of sense actually. It boggles my mind at how high GTA V places on these charts when, in my opinion, it is not as good as the games that came before it (not bad, just not that great). I actually still haven't purchased the game tbh!
@AnnoyingFrenzy No prob. Yeah agreed when viewed as a SP game, nothing has touched Vice City or San Andreas imo. I have little doubt the amazing evergreen sales status it has achieved is a good deal to do with the online multiplayer element. Seems to be a 'go to' game for goofing around with your mates for a lot of people.
@Gerbwmu Those games with full voice acting in the Three Houses engine would be amazing, sign me up
W00T and I may be buying it again to get the CE.
So I've casually looked through 2 years of Super Data reports, and according to them, it seems like Fire Emblem Three Houses had the 2nd biggest digital launch ever for any Nintendo game, only behind Super Smash Bros Ultimate.
@Browny "Waifu Shenanigans" sounds like the name of a all-girl singing group. Their rivals would be Trap Roulette, a group of 5 guys in drag and one girl. Nobody outside of the group knows who the real girl is.
I think I just wrote an anime.
@TalentedAtGames sure it does! It shouldn’t, but somehow it does haha. Obviously these are just my personal opinions of the game. The in-game graphics and animations are some of the worst I’ve seen on the system (barring the cutscenes), the dialog is relentlessly bad, the acting is non-existent, but the gameplay is superb and is still super fun to play. It’s actually impressive how much of a “fail forward” this game actually is.
@JayJ
Yeah I was waiting for Radiant Dawn to show up on the Wii U eshop. Especially after Wii games started coming and even Xenoblade showed up. I never get to play Radiant Dawn because I waited on it and by the time I thought about getting it, it was outrageously priced for a used copy. I don't know why Nintendo never bothered with it. Surely they had to know it would sell a ton.
We should put this in perspective. First, a lot of the time these digital sales are misreported, this is commonly known and part of me wonders if maybe someone over at (Un)Intelligent Systems or Nintendo weren't quietly putting their foot on the scale or sending a memo to their accounting departments to, as they say in the business, put a little "spice" on the sales figures.
Secondly, even at face value, the phrase, "Big Whoop" comes immediately to mind. So this game, which was heavily marketed and pushed and propped up like Bernie Lomax managed to make a few digital sales... at launch. Well, come back and tell me about retention, because retention is the ONLY dog in this race that truly matters. You know, Dexy's Midnight Runners, ever heard of them? No, me neither. Nobody has. Fire Emblem: Three Houses can be the "Come on Eileen" of 2019, because if all it has are a few digital sales and little retention, then it's no different than any other One-Hit-Wonder.
Let's all take a step back, shelve all your little waifu pillows for just one second, take a deep breath and for once look at this whole thing with a little perspective. Here already this so-called news is already almost pushed off the first page. There are more, bigger and better things to discuss about the Nintendo Switch. Fire Emblem: Three Houses is a flash in the pan, I won't deny it made an initial impact, but just like that drunk dufus who shows up to the party wearing a lampshade and making a fool of himself, yes - everyone takes notice but once that clown passes out, it's GOOD RIDDANCE and GOODBYE.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses, okay you were (overly) promoted and pushed down everyone's throats and thanks to insane levels of marketing you made a few sales here and there, but unlike some people I am always looking forward. I'm not fooled by some shenanigans and likely fake numbers.
Nope, sorry.
@Galenmereth I have no idea, but it made for a pretty funny read.
Come on, I know of Dexy's Midnight Runners - well, the one song they had that was a hit. And the video where the band member disappeared halfway through as he was fired. Haha.
I ordered a digital copy only because my 5yr old has game card swap-itis. And I didn't feel like having to pull out the card and then remember to replace it after I let him have a gaming session.
I've actually never been a fan of the series, i got awakening on the 3DS and that was my first try and i just never got into it at all.
But with this i been watching videos and everything and i am gonna be honest here, I'm going to give this game a go, i never intended to buy it but as i see more and more about it, also people who've never been into the series are getting into this is defo starting to convince me to give this a shot.
End of the month im gonna order it on Amazon.
@Razer I think you will enjoy it!
One of the best games on Switch, and of the generation at large.
This game will surely break 4 million sold, maybe even 5. Which is absolutely insane given where the franchise was 5 years ago. That’s insane for an SRPG regardless, especially one exclusive to a single platform.
@Patron I've read some pretty angry, nonsensical comments on the site, but yours are some of the funniest.
I can't wait to see your spin on how 3H is a failure even if the game shows up on the Switch top 10 because retention, or whatever thing you clearly have no idea about.
@Klunk23 I reckon his posts are all parody. But then again, some of the posters we have/had in here over the years...😬
I was in Taiwan for work when it released. I downloaded it to play on the flight home & haven't been able to quit playing it
@Franz if you're going to try a second one, might I suggest Awakening on the 3DS.
@WiltonRoots Sometimes it can certainly become difficult to distinguish between stupidity and parody on this site
