The Elder Scrolls is a colossal series with a following of passionate fans for each of its multiple entries. We've seen the seminal Skyrim come to Switch already, but now The Elder Scrolls: Blades is scheduled to arrive on Nintendo's console. While the former was a fully-fledged open-world epic, this new game is a free-to-play experience made specifically for mobile, and there are arguably no two terms more likely to strike fear into the hearts of passionate RPG gamers than 'F2P' and 'mobile'.
The lovely Zion is on the show floor at E3 2019 in LA and caught up with Matt Carofano - Art Director at Bethesda Game Studios - to get more info on the upcoming game. Check out the video above to discover exactly what Bethesda's vision is for this mobile chapter in the Elder Scrolls series.
Does The Elder Scrolls: Blades sound something you'd be interested in sampling? The asking price certainly makes it tempting. Let us know your thoughts below.

I give this a big... meh as it appears to be missing the core appeal of an Elder Scrolls game.
Skyrim is fine enough for me at the moment and thanks to the awesome mod team Beyond Skyrim they will be giving us Cyrodiil soon-ish. Well as fast as a group of volunteer developers can do. The work they have done so far is exceptional!

“If you want to speed things up a bit, that’s what the chest are for”.
Waiting to open up chest (aka loot boxes) perfectly captures what I love about the Elder Scrolls.
He seemed a bit fidgety when Zion asked him about the micro transactions. There is good reason for that.
No thanks. Either charge me up front or not at all. I hate being nickle and dimed.
I'm so glad they reduced the time it takes to open silver chests. Now this game isn't complete garbage anymo... Yes it is!
"Paiting" games should burn in hell.
Also, the interviewer seems almost afraid of touching upon the subjects of timers and IAP.
P2W trash mobile game.
Hard pass.
I'm gonna give this game a go at least, Pokemon Shuffle has fairly aggressive PTW elements but i still enjoy that so i'm going to give this a chance.
Also, @Ziondood, just wanna say, you're a great addition to the NL video team, i really enjoy your vids, keep up the good work !
Discover the in app cash, discover the pay to play mechanics, discover why bethesda is a bad company.
My girlfriend has Blades on her phone. It does look interesting, so I may give it a try on the Switch (my phone can't run it).
This is the only game I'm not interested in
Don't buy this trash game. Stick to the core franchise and not this money grubbing, time waiting, loot box mess of a "game".
@Aronos ...I'll try not to buy this free game.
This was Nintendo's biggest blunder at E3.
@Kinoen By letting Bethesda decide what to do with one of their own properties?
I don’t get it. I’m not looking forward to this, but the thing is free. Nothing is lost by this existing, and everything is gained by the opportunity.

I took one for the team and actually signed up for the smartphone beta and...it's honestly one of the worst mobile games i've ever encountered.
We all expected the usual f2p model potholes, they are inevitable on the market, no point in crying about spilled milk.
But Blades truly is "Murphey's Law" in game form.
They went for the worst the market had to offer in pretty much every regard...
It's worst offender is still its chest system, mainly due to how quickly it snowballs out of control.
In short, while dungeoneering, you don't loot chests, you take the whole damn thing home with you in a dedicated chest inventory.
This is your main source of crafting materials and gear worth wearing.
And you find a lot of chests, topping off your inventory quickly.
Opening them takes time, and you can only open one chest at a time (talk about being the worst rogue in RPG history...).
Say you're currently opening a gold chest you've gotten from a quest.
That's 6 hours of waiting, all the while you gather more and more wooden chests (couple of seconds to open) that now clog up your inventory.
And this pretty much brings the game to a complete halt.
You need to build up your town to progress main quests, you do that with ever increasing amounts of crafting mats, the amount you can find outside of chests is borderline useless.
So basically: You are forced to wait (or pay) for your chest to open, then open up the wooden ones to make room, rinse and repeat.
But what if you score several big chests? It's not uncommon to end up with an inventory full of days worth of waiting that way...
If they wanted to throttle progress, they should have gone with a much more common stamina system instead.
While also constantly interrupting your game, the overall experience is much less bumpy that way.
Blades isn't a "pick up and play 10 minutes a day" game, at its worst, its "Play 10 mins a week"...
If you don't like the common f2p mobile traps, this is misery in game form. If you can tolerate it, it's still one of the worst implementations around.
All hidden behind a pretty face (at least for mobile standards) and lots and lots of wasted potential.
I got this on iPad 3 months ago in beta....so honestly guys stay away, it’s so mundane, poorly executed and and has no sense of adventure. It’s pretty much a cash grab with typical mobile f2p style gameplay and is a far cry from anything to do with elder scrolls. I stopped playing it a week in as I gave it the benefit of the doubt but it’s just the same thing rinse and repeat.
@Einherjar very well said, this describes blades to a T
@Einherjar Couldn't agree with you more. I was a beta tester for the game, and even dropped a bit of money into it at first. It quickly gets stale and grindy, and you can't just play without getting stuck waiting on timers for chests, weapon/armor crafting, enchanting, building construction etc. It'd such an out right money grab that it's ridiculous. Shame, could've been a cool game.
This game hit iOS/Android months ago how are y'all just hearing about this?
@oceano And i actually don't even mind the wait timers on buildings or crafts. Standard f2p progress throttling.
But the chest system gets so ridiculously out of hand it's not even funny anymore.
Heck, being able to cue them up for opening would improve the system immensely already.
Give the option "Open all chests </> worth" and boom, much less of a hassle already.
@Toadie Appreciate it Toadie! 😄 I’m excited to give it a go too when the finished version releases!
