The battle royale genre comes in all shapes and sizes - it might have been made popular by shooters like PUBG and Fortnite, but Tetris 99 showed that it can also be successful in completely unexpected ways.
Reinforcing that point with style is 'Mario Royale', a fan-made, free-to-play online game which has multiple players all playing one level at the same time. Roughly 75 players jump into one game and take on a randomly selected level from Super Mario Bros. together; the first one to the flag pole wins, but getting there is quite the challenge.
We've had a few goes ourselves and it's pretty fun; players will likely zoom ahead and stomp on all of the Koopas and Goombas before they even trouble you, but we had one occasion where someone grabbed a Super Star, turned around, and used it to wipe out half of the other players following them. It's pretty mad, but that's what you'd hope for from Mario Battle Royale, right?
You can give it a go yourself right here if you're interested, but you might want to be pretty quick. We've seen Nintendo take down multiple fan projects like this in the past and - rather humorously - the loading screen for the game features a message from its creator which reads, "Please don't sue me. Please."
If you do decide to give it a go, let us know what you thought in the comments below.

Nintendo is going to LOVE this. BTW, I totally sent you guys this info, haha. Oh well.
Sounds fun, but yes Nintendo will be all over this pretty quickly. Just hire the guys who made it and make an official release.
@Kalmaro they never name check people with news nowadays
@Kalmaro @Bunkerneath Apologies if you've sent this in and we haven't seen it - we spotted the game this morning via another site.
We sometimes get a lot of tips come in so your comment may have just been buried in our inbox.
"Please don't sue me, please"
Yeah... you used stolen materials to make it. Nintendo is well within their rights to send you a cease. And it's hardly a Nintendo being a spoilsport about it. I promise you, any other major IP holder would do the same. Sony, Disney, Microsoft, Fox, anyone. That's just how it is. ¯(ツ)/¯
If you look at the source there is a disclaimer that says:
Can't play it's blocked on my work PC thats why I looked at the website source to see what plugin it used.
@Heavyarms55
Not Sega
"It's Surprisingly Great" and will unsurprisingly receive a cease and desist very soon.
I suppose they always steal Nintendo IPs to get some fame quickly instead of making a generic game that would just as good.
Hey, there’s even a mobile version. Together, we will kill fortnite.
Just been playing in my lunch hour at work - great fun! I suspect it will disappear very shortly.
Why do they keep doing this?
1. Make something with Nintendo's IP.
2. Nintendo strikes it down.
3. Whine about Nintendo striking it down.
You know this is going to happen. So why bother.
These people should focus on making something new and worthwile using unique characters and then Nintendo might even help with releasing it on their platform as an indie.
This sounds really fun. Maybe something like this can be patched into Mario Maker 2? It wouldn't work on my phone.
Stop putting bad ideas into Nintendo's head!
@ryancraddock Hey its all good, I don't need any glory, I'm already first comment constantly, lol.
That was so cool . I played a few runs and it was a blast. Nintendo should include a mode like this in Mario Maker 2
@Kalmaro Haha, that's very true
I wish Nintendo would make a Battle Royale compilation of some of their greatest NES and SNES games like this.
Battle Royale Mario
Battle Royale ExciteBike
Battle Royale Balloon Fighter
Battle Royale Ice Climbers etc.
@Xaessya Lol, go ahead and think that. As soon as the big shots at Sega thought a fan project was remotely going to be a problem or a distraction from their upcoming projects they'd happily send one out.
Sega simply needs to embrace fans because Sonic Team has forgotten how to make a good Sonic game. If not for the almost entirely fan made Sonic Mania, Sonic would still be a joke in 2019, living off of remember glory.
I wonder if Nintendo can implement a nice like this for Super Mario Maker 2. They kinda do with the 4 player co-op, but would be cool to have 100 people and race to the finish!
I played it on my phone for a few minutes, but it ran pretty poorly so I couldn't get a good judgement on if it was genuinely good. It is a neat idea though.
Fan games are really no different from fan art that you see everywhere and fanfics. It's not making them money so I don't really see a problem (tips aside since you can listen to a music group play covers of songs and tip them so does that count as the group stealing from the songwriters and artists?).
Great idea! Nintendo should include the maker in a project to release this on switch
@Maroc
No group that I know of pays royalties for covers. I don't mean big groups but the small town groups and people you see playing in the parks and what not.
Using a controller is terrible, what with the Lshoulder being jump and Ltrigger being run.
@tendonerd You can remap the controls via an options menu on the lower right corner.
That's pretty neat. I remember that I suck at any sort of speed run and that I'm really not very good at Mario games.
@Heavyarms55 Sonic Mania is a fan game?
@Timppis battle royale balloon fighter would be great till I remembered how hard Balloon Trip is.
l would like to play this game
@Bunkerneath They named me in an article a little while ago, it still happens.
@Trajan They hired fans to make it, yes. It wasn't made by their regular team.
MARIO 99. If it had good controls and was not a laggy mess it would actually be fun.
@Dethmunk nintendo doesn't have a strong hold on the word mario itself otherwise they'd be suing restaurants that existed with the name before they came up with the character for the sake of it
@sanderev if they made something original they wouldn’t get an article on nintendolife.
Reported to Nintendo.
@BlackenedHalo Nah man. This NEEDS to become official. I would pay for it for sure.
@Xaessya Nope Sega is still guilty, they only let fans touch Sonic cause they don't know how to make him good anymore but touch their other IPs and you will know they are no different from the rest as evidence by the fan-made Streets of Rage situation. You can't say they will never do that when there's obvious facts proven that they did. It's like lying saying hey I never beat you up when you are little when clearing there's a video proof of you doing it online.
