Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the Necrodancer had a cracking debut in Japan, debuting at number one in the Switch eShop charts for the region last week.
The news comes from Nintendo's regular Japanese eShop update, which has revealed the top ten most downloaded games for the period of 13th - 19th June. It sits just ahead of Doraemon: Story of Seasons, which currently finds itself at the top of the physical retail chart in Japan.
If you're interested, here is that top ten:
- Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the Necrodancer - Featuring The Legend of Zelda
- Doraemon: Story of Seasons
- Cuphead
- Timberman VS (on sale)
- Yo-Kai Watch 4 (on sale)
- Human: Fall Flat
- Undertale
- Overcooked 2
- Super Mario Maker 2
- Final Fantasy VII

Nice to see it's been received well. Though I'm a little surprised how well it's launched given the price to apparent duration ratio. £20 for a few hours doesn't fit my purchasing policy.
I'm waiting for a bit before buying it, but it has been at the top of the UK eShop charts for a while now, seemingly since launch. It seems to have done well everywhere!
Given it's Japan, I'm hoping for an arcade version of the game with a big dance pad inside Hyrule castle with a giant screen in front and deafening music levels. Because they do awesome stuff like that.
Wait, Mario Maker 2 was 9th?
@hihelloitsme wait for the actual release...
Trying to resist story of seasons...
I've been wondering - perhaps someone here knows. You know the eShop charts, it says at the bottom 'the most downloaded software from the last two weeks' or whatever? Well, is it updated every day? Real time? Once a week on Thursdays? It'd be interesting to know.
@hihelloitsme much longer pre order time than hey it's being released next week so we don't cut into the sales of the next Zelda game in 6 months. Imagine if cadence were released closer to Link's Awakening.
@hihelloitsme it is only digital pre order, and it was open for pre order for a while now so many people already did their pre order/will do it next week upon lunch
For COH it is it’s lunch week so the sales are high
Btw, it is number 2 in the US, after 2K 19 with the first game in the series (crypt of the necro dancer) being number 3
And number 2 in the UK while the original is actually number one
Probably holding high spots on many other markets as well
I do have the first one but never actually played it, maybe one day....
I bought Cadence and I haven't bought a Switch game since Octopath. Having a good time with it so far, no regrets on $25 for a great game.
A very Western list...surprising!
I'm holding out for perhaps a physical release announcement. I will let everybody know if i break down and buy it digitally. Because as soon as i do the next week it will get a physical announcement.
Anyone know what is the number usually in the top ten downloads in Japan, UK and US charts?
What a game. Cost well over what I wanted to pay, but I couldn't hold back and I haven't looked back.
Now where can I get a hold of those tunes!
Yea 1-10 @Tantani. But what do you mean sells numbers?
@Baart yes, the biggest surprise for me is Human Fall Flat
@BacklogBlues I meant sales numbers lol
How many copies were actually sold
@gcunit It's a game that's almost infinitely replayable
To bad I can't play it. 🙁
@N64-ROX they do love their crude slapstick humour, don't they? (:
@gcunit I've heard of people who have just finished their 3rd play-though and have no question in theri mind about at least another 3. I've also heard of one person who's first play-through was 26 hours.
@gcunit given the game randomization, multiple characters, and various difficulty options, the price is not that outrageous. Some games get their value from replaying. For example: most Platinum games. Kirby games only take a few hours and they sell for $60 at release. Not all games are intended to be played a single time.
@ShadJV Kirby prices are outrageous
I don't object to the price for this and I don't doubt its replayability, I just choose to turn it down based on what I've heard and the fact it's digital only at the moment.
@Baart fair point, you just reminded me to pick up that Nippon Marathon game!
Although I'd say Human Fall Flat is far from crude... More like excruciatingly dedicated to physics above all else...
@gcunit
"Few hours"? You gonna speedrun this your first time through? For most playing normally it will take 6-8 hours first time, then whatever you do on subsequent playthroughs.
Must have been Nobita's idea to release the Doraemon game on the same week as Cadence of Hyrule. Dumb kid always messes everything up.
@BacklogBlues i think you're safe to order digitally now. I would imagine it wouldve been announced by now or in the treehouse last week if a physical was coming soon. You won't be disappointed trust me..
@rallydefault is correct. The first play through took me 8 hours almost on the nose. My 2nd play through was 4 hours. And I'll definitely go back and play again soon. It really is allot of fun . @gcunit
I'm waiting for maybe a Limited Run Games, Strictly Limited Games, Super Rare Games or Special Reserve Games announcement @NintendoByNature. But i'll probably get it when it goes on sell because if a game is digital only it goes on my wish list until it goes on sell.
Well duh
It’s Japan.
And a Zelda game
@WoolooSweater You say "duh", but Zelda isn't historically a massive seller in Japan. It does absolutely fine, but it's not a phenomenon the way something like Splatoon, Smash or Mario is.
@gcunit how people are rushing through this in a few hours is beyond me. I've been playing it for over 5 hours just moving around exploring and I'm only 1 temple through out of the 4.
@BradC40 me either. It's a cracking little game. If people are doing it in 3-4 hours they are certainly missing stuff as I've been on it for over 4 and I'm nowhere near done.
I’m not interested but maybe I should but my gaming prejudices aside and have a go?
@gcunit I just can't bring myself to think of games in such rigid mathematical terms. Art is about more than cost-per-hour.
Dinner and a drink can cost $20. Why can't a few hours of joy?
@Razieluigi I don't need to spend that much though - certainly when I have an existing games library overflowing with fantastic games. Crypt of the Necrodancer cost me about £3.
I absolutely loved this game. I was in desperate need of something different because I’ve been playing nothing but Sekiro and The Division 2, and this game seriously came into my life at the perfect time. It’s probably gonna be one of my GOTY contenders, primarily because it brought a sense of joy back to me that I just wasn’t getting with previous games I’ve been playing.
Glad to see this game doing so well. Price was a tiny bit higher than it should have been, but I've wasted money on games far worse, so I can't complain about giving my money to a good dev.
It is almost like putting Zelda on the cover can make anything sell like hotcakes.
@JayJ Yeah, but in this case, it’s actually a good game.
No surprise there given Crypt of the Necrodancer's popularity in Japan, but still great news nonetheless! I can only hope this encourages Nintendo to collaborate more with quality indie studios, like an indie-made F-Zero, Advance Wars, etc.
Cadence of Hyrule took a couple hours to get used to. More health helped. The game doesn't hold your hand, and it doesn't get in your way.
