Earlier this week, Mortal Kombat 11 arrived in North America on the Nintendo Switch. The European release will be out next month. If you’re still on the fence about this particular version of the game, Digital Foundry has now uploaded a video comparing the Switch release to its PlayStation 4 and Xbox One counterpart. According to the tech experts, it’s simply “remarkable” a demanding 60fps Unreal Engine game like this is even running on such a device.
Shiver Entertainment has managed to keep all of the gameplay intact in the Nintendo release. The main difference between each version is image quality and resolution. When the Switch is docked, the game resolution runs at 1280x720 and can fall to 960x540. The bigger drops appear during the fatalities and opening moments, but on average, the gameplay runs at 720p. On the portable front, MK11 takes quite a hit. At best, it is 854x480 and can go down to 682x 384 during more intensive moments.
In terms of frame rate, the Switch release runs at 60fps with a few stutters here and there in docked mode. It’s only the cut scenes that struggle, often dropping below the 30fps cap. In the portable mode, the game runs at 60fps but can go down to 45fps. Overall, though, Mortal Kombat 11 is one of the most ambitious Switch ports to date. The portable play is what makes the Switch version worth considering.

Don't Regret this purchase at all, it plays fantastically and the fact that I can play Mortal Kombat just about anywhere is just phenomenal when I’m home sure I can play on my PS4 Pro but there’s something about playing this on switch that’s just amazing.
Plays silky smooth other than the fatalities and some cut scenes like fatal blow’s which cause a bit of a stutter here and there but for the most part it’s just awesome game play. Ton of content for the money, It’s become one of my favorite purchases this year.
Shiver Entertainment did a fantastic job with MK11 for Switch that I hope NetherRealm Studio give them another chance if Injustice 2 or Mortal Kombat 9 & XL ports were to ever considered for Switch. C'mon NetherRealm give us the missing MKs and Injustice 2, I want my TMNT vs. DC on the go.
If only they didn't put their employees through horrible work conditions. My interest is totally gone at this point.
@RyanSilberman You mention they which only apply to NetherRealm Studio (which had nothing to do with the Switch port of MK11), not Shiver Entertainment which work really hard on getting this game to Switch. Support Shiver Entertainment so their hard work won't be in vain and so they could be consider to bring more good games to Switch in the near future.
Impressive! Might pick this up
Is it still a port, even if it launches simultaneously to all platforms?
Any numbers on which system it has sold the most copies on?
I didn't buy my switch because I care about specs. It's run on a handheld with some minor downscales. Impressive!
It is remarkable, but I’m holding off on getting this one. It just seems like a jumbled mess of micro transactions, DLC, and corporate mismanagement. I mean who thought a freakin’ MK game needed all this junk? Ed Boon has just surrendered this franchise to WB suits. I’ll wait for the actual game to be released 2 years from now.
I Wouldn’t call this a port
Not a fan of MK at all but good to see it’s been translated so well. A big plus for the Switch.
A series I have no interest in. Maybe a demo would help
@RyanSilberman Yay for basing an opinion on one unsubstantiated report that they curiously waited to publish until the new game was out so they could try to affect sales.
@RyanSilberman Which gaming company doesn't do that?
@NotTelevision What mess are you talking about? Microtransactions only apply to cosmetics and in any case you can earn them in game for free. This isn't a pay to win game by any means. What's wrong with DLC extra characters? The base game has plenty of characters so you don't need to buy DLC. Sure they could have included all the characters and charged significantly more but how does that help those who don't want the extra characters and just want the game as cheap as possible? This isn't the first game with DLC extras. And inevitably the extra DLC characters will eventually be on sale at a knockdown price for those who want that. Don't know what mismanagement you're talking about but unfortunately the entire game creating industry is infamous for terrible working conditions because that's the ugly reality of modern capitalism that focuses on executive pay and shareholders and stiffs everyone else.
Don't deny yourself the pleasure of a fantastic beautiful remarkable game for two years. The passionate artists who did the hard work of making this game want you to enjoy their creation. Who knows what life will bring in two years. Enjoy this pleasure today and live life to the full.
@retro_player_22 A full injustice 1&/or just 2 would be lovely with all DLC bundled in. Same for X. The dlc is usually better than the base roster. I was more interested in the extras in XL than the base roster.
The leaked DLC roster for this one wasn’t as strong IMHO.
What a great job they did. Looks seriously impressive on Switch! And the other platforms as well of course.
So we were all worried over nothing then
Great to have this on the Switch, just wish the game wasn't such a grind....
It looks really good, strange no footage was released before its release.
I took the plunge and am quite impressed. I hate that my guy, Liu Lang, is still a loser bad guy zombie😒 BUT anyway... sweet game.
Bought this and can't wait to play it!
Don't know why in Europe they delayed the release.
I'm really glad they are bringing such a great fighting game to the console.
I'm sure there will be some patches to improve the cut scenes and other parts that are not running properly.
I am not a fighting game fan, but I absolutely love how this game plays. The graphics are a bit odd, like the lighting is wonky and whatnot, though. I think it might be because i had to set the brightness in game up to maximum, I'm not sure. It reminds me of when I would try and get new games running on an old laptop and I didn't turn the right settings down.
Plays amazing though
@setezerocinco good question. now every third party game for switch is called port
It's one of the best games on the Switch right now! It's really incredible how after every cutscene, and when you're about to start the fight, the graphics improve in one second! It has nothing to envy from the other console versions, MK 11 is inkredible on Switch!
Considering I was playing this game on Switch at Starbucks on my lunch break well worth every penny. It’s just nice to know technically they also did a impressive job with it. Honestly good port.
The micro transactions thing is blow way out of proportion. Waaay out.
@RevampedSpider A bunch of former employees have openly called them out on it.
@retro_player_22 Neatherrealm made the game. They still get rewarded for their conditions. I'll support Shiver if they attached their name to something more palpable.
Even barring the behind the scenes, MK11's microtransactions and freakin absurd 20+ GB download are massive turnoffs for me.
@RyanSilberman
Do you have links to the information? Nowadays it is so easy to spread fake rumours.... and what are the bad conditions?
In some jobs is normal to work some hard nighta during the last weeks before a release. I know how that is...
The video actually sounded even more positive about the Switch version than the loose transcription. Difference is basically resolution and lighting, but not drastically so in any way. So yeah, impressive they got the Switch version out at the same time in such a great condition - tempted (though I haven't played MK since MK2 & don't really play fighting games ).
@zocker-hias https://www.pcgamer.com/former-devs-speak-out-about-severe-crunch-at-mortal-kombat-studio/
Red flags include common 80-100 work weeks, 10am-12am days, and bosses leaving for dinner while their employees are left to rot in the office still working.
And unlike other recent accusations against companies for such practices, there are actual names (of former employees) tied to these claims as opposed to them being anonymous.
@RyanSilberman the problem is that Shiver needs MK 11 to do well to get to attach themselves to something else, porting titles to switch is becoming a good business.
That said I respect anyone that chooses to boycott something based on principles.
@MaSSiVeRiCaN Same, I’ve been loving it both at home and on the go! Picking up the Pass on payday.
Did they mention the constant crashes too? Lol.
@PBandSmelly 22 games
@retro_player_22 I enjoyed MK9 tremendously because it was the most faithful to the classics. It's also the least demanding game of the "new ones" so I'd LOVE to have it portet to switch, maybe with a few tweaks or a new extra character here and there. Just can't get enough of that classic era's Mortal Kombat, back, when I was like 10. 11 is "too comicy" for me and I am not fond anymore of the HYPERviolence.
New update for the Switch version of Mortal Kombat 11 is available for download today. For those who got the game, be sure to download the update so you can get the changes and improvements for the game.
