Following the backlash against the product that was initially announced last year, it seems Sega is really pulling out all the stops after taking its Mega Drive/Genesis Mini console back to the drawing board. Not only is the emulation now being handled by veteran company M2 (the outfit responsible for the brilliant Sega 3D Classics line on 3DS, as well as countless other top-class ports), but it seems the physical casing itself is a significant step up from previous licensed efforts.
A pair of Japanese trailers have given us a better look at the console and it appears to go above and beyond even Nintendo's sterling efforts. The first one (above) highlights the features of the console itself and gives us a peek at the save state menus (in Japanese, of course).
Skip to 0:48 and you'll see all the buttons on the console being pressed, which appear to function as they always did (we imagine the reset button will work as it did on the NES Mini). However, the big surprise is the functioning cartridge slot doors!
Of course, this doesn't mean you'll be able to play original carts on the Mega Drive Mini - it's a purely decorative addition - but it highlights the attention-to-detail and effort that's gone into this console, a far cry from AtGames' previous pitiful stabs at all-in-one Mega Drive solutions.
A second trailer gave an overview of the ten announced titles for the Japanese version:
With menu music by Yuzo Koshiro, the inclusion of some hard-to-find classics like Castlevania: Bloodlines and the involvement of M2, this is shaping up to rival Nintendo's Mini Classics line. Of course, we've been disappointed in the past, but everything we've seen until now is very encouraging. We were previously operating on a sensible 'wait-and-see' basis, but now we're seriously eyeing those pre-orders. September can't come soon enough.
With the bar so low after previous efforts, do you think Sega is finally giving the Mega Drive the mini treatment it deserves? What games would you like to see in its 40-title lineup? Let us know below.

It is looking great. I suspect that I will probably end up owning one, even though I have an original Mega Drive 1 with the switchless mod, a pile of games and an OSSC.
I have nothing but confidence in this mini console. Now if they can just make sure Langrisser /Warsong is included, I would be on cloud 9.
Am picking one up when it launches!!!
Hell yeah, looks great. I'll probably end up buying both a Japanese and European one.
I’ve only just put my favourite Mega Drive games onto my SNES mini so I really don’t need this as well. Definitely not buying. No siree. Nope...
Edit: Preordered
Got a jailbroken Mega SG already, thanks.
The fact M2 is working on this is a big plus, especially after the pitiful Sega Classics Collection on Switch. The line-up of games will be the most important however, as I already own a ton of genesis games in some form anyway, including physical.
@RainbowGazelle That's what I'm doing (except in my case it'll be Japan and Australian editions). Got one pre ordered from EB Games and the Japanese one pre ordered from Nin Nin Game since they'll actually deliver to my house.
It looks great. This will be a sales hit for sure. I will get one but have so many consoles under the tv that juggling where to put it will be a headache.... The SNES Mini might have to be put away for a while 😂😂
As cool as it looks I'm struggling to get excited for this.
I can't really see the point of it when it's already possible to buy The Mega drive collection of 40 games for current consoles.
At least with the NES & SNES mini consoles you couldn't buy full collection of Nintendo games on disc (or cartridge in the case of the Switch).
I can see it being more of a collectors item for Sega enthusiasts
@MarinaKat Why do you still need to act like you have to be cautious about this one, just because Sony screwed up?
...because Sega has a reputation of screwing up these things.
If this has Super Hangon, then I'll have no choice but to buy it. I can resist the 10 announced games so far though...
Keep Puyo Puyo Tsuu on the Western versions, You Cowards.
I'm really embarrassed that I'm so impressed by all the moving parts on it. It's like... games? Pfft. It has sliders and buttons n' stuff!
I'll tell you something: With functioning cartridge slot doors, it makes it even clearer to me that Sega could actually include a working slot that takes mini game cartridges and then let developers release new Mega Drive Mini compatible games, as well as release compilation Mini carts of some more of its own games in the future (given it's only going to include 40 games pre-loaded so has many others it could look to include on Mini carts). And companies like Capcom and Konami could even re-release some of their classics in Mini cartridge physical boxed form and/or do their own compilation carts too. I already mentioned such a feature would have been [beyond] cool when we first heard about the NES/SNES Mini systems, and it would be awesome if Sega actually did such a thing here. I know it almost certainly isn't going to happen, but surely, now that we can see a working cartridge slot on a Mini system, almost all of you can see how genius such a feature would be on a 2019 Mini console version of a system like the Mega Drive (or SNES). It would almost feel like a proper re-release of the Mega Drive for a modern audience, a proper renaissance of the 16-git era with those actual consoles (in a slightly modern form), and could actually see a whole batch of amazing new pixel-art games for the system. Just imagine how many smaller indie developers would jump on such a thing. I mean, this system would basically be made for indies because creating new games for it wouldn't require huge budgets or large dev teams or years to make. Man, it could be sooo cool. And if Nintendo actually did similarly with something like a SNES Mini 2.0--the possibilities. . . .
I was getting hopeful about it being able to play physical cartridges for a second... That would've been quite the game-changer for these mini consoles.
@CrimsonMoonMist See my comment above. . . .
I mean we know the slot isn't big enough to take full size original carts, so playing original physical Mega Drive games is out of the question, but the potential for something very special to happen with new Mini carts would be absolutely there if they'd made it a working Mini cartridge slot.
@Onion totally agree. That collection was so poorly put together and I was really on the fence about getting this at first, despite loving sega and the megadrive, but seeing that M2 was doing it sold me immediately. Will def buy this now
Even though I'll probably mod it, I'm still exited to know what the rest of the games are gonna be.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles ... anyone? Anywhere? 😔
@impurekind As much as the idea appeals to me personally, I feel like that would be the 1981 video game market all over again.
It actually should let you play the carts!! The ATgames model, horrible as it was, did!!
Already pre-ordered. Need to get my 6-button USB pads from Retro-Bit....
Great news but I hope we get an N64 Classic Edition at some point.
If I can put the ROMs from my own cartridges in this, I'm probably going to buy it. I love the idea of having a mini-collection, ready to go. The cable management is getting tricky though!
(Master System and a good Atari 2600 would probably be all I need to get it as complete as I want... but a mini GameCube might be the most adorable game object ever)
A functional slot door that's a odd design and sounds more like a slot that will have some uses is what it sounds like. I would venture future game slots cards to be used in it. If so that would be a future proof to bring back classic games and or update them to run again.
These mini consoles are useless. When Nintendo did that it was cool (but indeed useless), but now it is not even cool. If you want to play old games there are a lot of better options (Pc, hd retro consoles, etc.). Don’t waste your money on these toys.
Sega should include these titles:
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Gunstar Heros
Shining Force 2
Streets of Rage 2
Sonic 3 + Sonic and Knuckles
Sonic the Hedgehog
Castlevania Bloodlines
Lightning Force
Rocket Knight Adventures
Shinobi 3
Mega Turrican
Contra Hard Corps
Aladdin
Alien Soldier
Road Rash 2
Strider
Earthworm Jim
Ranger X
Dynamite Heady
Beyond Oasis
Ristar
Wonderboy in Monster World
Mickey Mouse Castle of Illusion
Battle Mania Daiginjo
X-MEN 2: Clone Wars
Vectorman
Shining in the Darkness
Herzog Zvei
Punisher
Ecco the Dolphin
Hopefully Sega addresses the complaints people had with Nintendo's system. Short controller cables. Also I hope unlike Nintendo, Sega/M2 will offer a lot more visual settings to make the games look better on a HDTV. Also the ability to add more games.
Like a few have mentioned. I would love for a real working slot and the re-release of Genesis mini carts including cases/manuals. Not sure how much of a market there is for this, but I would be on board.
I also wish Nintendo & Sega would put more effort into getting some of the 3rd parties on board. It's a shame all of these retro releases have basically the same games. I want some of Capcoms, Konami's, Data East, Sunsoft, etc 16bit titles. And some of the more obscure titles.
@Fandabidozi I’ll sell my SNES Mini and put its games on the Mega Drive Mini 😀
@Luigi_Mario yeah! That’d be just awesome.
These companies are leaving money on the table imo. Why don’t they release a mini console that plays actual mini carts? That way we could buy what games we wanted and would be much cooler!
@NEStalgia I don't see how that's a bad thing. These Mini systems are already here so why not give them a life beyond the pre-installed games but in a way that is in line with what they are all about, which is simple old-school gaming with no fuss, and doesn't require Internet connections or setting up user accounts and credit cards and stuff like that online. It would just be the ability to play physical Mini carts in them and hopefully a bunch of cool old and new pixel games that would come with it. I would absolutely love it if my SNES Mini had that capability, more than you can imagine.
@impurekind I certainly like it, and retailers would absolutely love it (at first.) But I'm picturing the homebrew scene merging with the cheap indie scene and becoming the same plague that was the 2600 back in the day of cheap shovelware that makes retailers not want to carry gaming products as they liquidate unmoving clearance bins by the end.
Plus without the licensing systems of old, you KNOW they'll be used for questionable content tied to the brand name. Night Trap 2019: For real this time!
@Onion while I agree almost entirely, honestly, for me the fact M2 are onboard is more important than even the games lineup.
@NEStalgia Well the good thing would be that because it's physical boxed cartridges then developers wouldn't so easily be able to get away with just churning out smartphone-like freemium-style garbage because they'd actually have to invest quite a bit of money to properly release a game on the system, at least an official cartridge product, so it would help weed out some of the real junk. And in this day and age I also think that would work for bigger developers trying to just cash in too, because most people in this day and age aren't going to fall for paying normal game prices for just complete shovelware, and certainly not when they know fine well that kind of shovelware is available en masse for free on mobile. There would be some trash for sure, but maybe Nintendo and Sega could try the whole "seal of quality" thing again too and only let at least decent games be officially released for the system. I actually think it could work.
I’ve got a good feeling about this...
@Drommajin
I preordered mine yesterday. 😊
I'd pay $100 for a PC Engine/Turbo Grafx 16/Turbo Duo Classic Mini console.
I'm excited for this but I won't buy it if its only 40 games from the Sega Classics that was released on the Switch. I'd love to see some more top down or side scrolling rail shooters. There was only 1 on the sega classics which I didn't care for called Bio Hazard. There are so many other better rail shooters.
@Fandabidozi I just preordered mine from Castlevania Games. It is the Genesis Classic/Mini but it’s ok. I dunno if the Japanese version will have Japanese only for the PS and Shining Forces games...
@Drommajin
It’ll be totally hacked a month out from launch no doubt. I’ve got some Mega Drive games running on my SNES mini and they run/play great. Slightly blows my mind to be playing Quackshot on a SNES controller tho. 🤯
