Yuzo Koshiro is something of a legend with gamers of a certain age. He’s responsible for some of the most iconic soundtracks of the 16-bit era, composing the tunes that made games like Revenge of Shinobi, Streets of Rage and ActRaiser so memorable.
During his glittering career he’s worked on loads of other games too of course, but his connection with the Mega Drive has arguably made him a figure of affection for many players; those same players will no doubt be over the moon to learn that he’s involved with the Mega Drive Mini, a micro-console that’s launching this September.
The stars really are aligning with this new console, and it should hopefully put to rest all of the bad memories we have of those ghastly Sega clones that have been clogging up store shelves for the past decade. With M2 handling the emulation and the one and only Yuzo Koshiro doing the menu music, this could be a real rival to the NES and SNES Classic Editions.
Now we just need to know what the remaining games are...

I mean, it's stupid. I have these games many times over. Via collections. Via ROMs on my PC. Via stand-alone downloads on Steam. But the idea of playing through them with those classic 3-button Sega Genesis controllers just seems incredibly tempting to me.
I'll wait to hear what the other games are and read hardware reviews to make sure everything is on the up and up, but I could very well see this becoming the first of the retro consoles that I'm actually willing to buy.
And now we have Yuzo Koshiro. I LOVE his scores. Especially the work he has done for the Etrian Odyssey games.
Is Yuzo Koshiro a freelance artist ?
Because last time his song has been contributed for Konami on Dance Dance Revolution Extreme 2 on PS2.
I hope he will be involved in the upcoming Streets of Rage game.
When the PS Classic was about to launch, almost every news we heard about it was a disappointment but for this Mega Drive Mini it seems the more we hear about it the more interesting it gets. Hopefully it delivers what AtGames can't.
He's a busy man. Menu music for the Genesis mini, a Kickstarter game called 198X, hopefully Streets of Rage 4 and just throwing it out there, Ys IX.
@retro_player_22
Hopefully it does what ATGa--.... AtGon't? ..... Nah, that doesnt work.
I pre-ordered the Sega Genesis Mini at the first chance I got, on Amazon. I'm excited for it.
He's a legend and actually holds the number 1 and 2 spots in the Acid House charts on RYM. The Bare Knuckle 2 soundtrack is a total bop.
If they keep this up I’ll be proud to have the Sega Genesis Mini next to my Classics and N64.
Wow, what a great choice of guy for the music. This guy has created some truly astounding soundtracks. Really hoping he goes for more of an Actraiser vibe here, but seeing as this in on the Mega Drive, I expect he'll probably go a bit more Shinobi and Streets of Rage style.
Not only could this Mega Drive Mini rival the SNES Mini, with 40 games included and hopefully proper length controller cords out-the-box (snipe!), it could actually surpass the SNES Mini.
As usual, buy it to obtain the official USB Mega Drive controller. Once the Saturn Mini comes out, do the same.
Ok, in that photo Yuzo looks to be maybe 25-30 years old...So when he worked on Genesis titles he was what? 1?
@retro_player_22 M2 is working on it, ANYTHING is better than what the PSC was.
Pre-ordered the Genesis & MDJ. Cannot wait (to mod them both)!
@Wavey84 These games will not be running through an emulator though, they will all be optimize similar to how M2 optimize them with the Sega Ages games and since they are optimized to be run accurately, putting roms on the Mega Drive Mini will not work. If you bought the Sega 3D Classic Collection on the 3DS, that's how this Mega Drive Mini will be like once it's out. So yeah sorry to all the people wanting to load roms on this, it just wouldn't work and even if you manage to get Retro Arch on this thing, those roms will just be running through Retro Arch with lags by the Retro Arch emulator only so you won't get the accurate play optimization from M2.
O.K., if he's working on something as minor as menu music for a mini retro console then he should definitely be doing Streets Of Rage 4 right?
Legendary stuff indeed:)
