One of the more interesting parts of today's full Joker reveal for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, in our eyes at least, was his stage. Called Mementos, this new stage has a few tricks up its sleeve and is arguably one of the most eye-catching designs in the game. So, let's take a look shall we?
In Joker's reveal video, it was said that, "in this mysterious underground, many twists and turns will come your way during battle". Indeed, platforms and scenery are seen floating on and off the screen and, eventually, the Phantom Thieves of Hearts turn up in the Morgana car, cheering you on from the sidelines.
Perhaps the most notable thing of all, however, is the stage's use of music. There are eleven different tracks that are included with your Joker DLC purchase, and you can tell the game how regularly you'd like each song to be chosen while playing on the Mementos stage. Here's a full tracklisting:
From Persona 5:
- Last Surprise
- Beneath the Mask (New Arrangement)
- Wake Up, Get Up, Get Out There
- Rivers In the Desert
- Our Beginning
From Persona 4:
- Reach Out To The Truth
- I'll Face Myself (New Arrangement)
- Time To Make History
From Persona 3:
- Mass Destruction
- Battle Hymn of the Soul
- Aria of the Soul (New Arrangement)
When a track from Persona 4 or 3 plays, the colour of Mementos will change. Naturally, this means that your song selections can also alter the entire look of the stage, and the colour change even applies to Joker's victory screen. You can see the different colours below.
In case you've somehow missed the news, Joker is arriving in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate today, 17th April. Do you have your Season Pass ready to go?

You'll never see it coming!
I hope we get some obscure Nintendo character as one of those dlcs. I'd rather they bring something new than another Mario character or Sword fighter
They even changed the design elements that relate to the theme from each game. The clocks on the P3 alternate stage is sweet.
Also glad they picked the 2 best songs from Persona 3 for Smash. I ain't complaining. <3
@MagnaRoader I really want Dillon, but he's an assist trophy...
Huh, I don't understand. Why didn't they add Sono Chi no Sadame?
Update when Nintendo?
This is amazing, but still a little upset that there's no Life Will Change. Still, this is unbelievable! I was expecting something a bit like FF, where we only get about 2 tracks !
@iRiS I just saw the Notification on Switch, and in Japan it's launching on the 18th, so about like 10 hours give or take.
I’m so glad that there’s P3/4 music. Especially that new Persona 4 mix, can’t wait to hear it. This is everything I hoped for and more.
Now we just need Phoenix Wright put in...
Saying it's the 17th is a little misleading. In the UK it seems to be happening at 3:30am on the 18th
Nice to see P3/4 representation though...even if I have heard Last Suprise/Time to Make History/Mass Destruction 1000 times
@patbacknitro18 Like 10am JST
I love how Nintendo can take Smash Bros and use it to make me excited about franchises I previously never cared about and probably will never care about again. Can’t wait for this update!!!
I hope the next Character will the Tifa from FFVII, would be a great brawller, especially her Final Smash, which would be her full Limit Break.
To be fair the level looks too simple as if someone made it on the stage builder in 5 mins
@MagnaRoader considering that Joker is more dagger and pistol with the ability to summon a massive battle spirit's manifestation to hover behind him guardian demon style, I'd say he rather stretch the definition of sword fighter a bit.
This said I was thinking about it but with his inclusion I feel the introduction of a dragon quest hero character is that much more likely.
In Japanese RPGs, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and Shin Megami Tensei/Persona are the "big three" of the JRPG tradition.
With FF7's Cloud already present in the game, Persona 5's Joker soon and potentially Dragon Quest's Erdrick/Luminary it might mean Nintendo could be about to have all three represented in Smash.
And with ports/localization of Dragon Quest XI and Dragon Quest Builders 2 soon releasing on Switch and rumors of Persona 5 potentially getting ported too, all three franchises might be directly represented on the Switch itself to cement it as "the" jRPG console.
Like even the more recent 3rd party additions of the Belmont are characters with a franchise that are close to the boundaries of the rpg genre(even if not the direct games of the characters themselves) I can't help but feel it might not be a coincidence.
And from a technical standpoint it makes sense; RPGs are renowned for the variety of skills, spells and gear used by their characters which makes that much more material to draw from when developing move sets. I can only imagine the trickery that might be possible if a Dragon Quest hero comes with the hero class-exclusive kaklang spells that turn the character into an immovable immobile invisible chunk of steel for a short time. Imagine being next to the edge of a stage, weakened, and an enemy come charging at you with a dash attack and suddenly... kaklang, you're a lump of steel and in their surprise they accidently slip past you and off the stage forcing them to recover just as you become mobile again and ready to strike back while they stand unbalanced.
And that's not mentioning the many buffs spells that are a tradition of the DQ playstyle, many available to the hero class.
Even as a sword fighter the character might end up more an hybrid of Link sword&shield with a dash of pikachu lightning(lightning spells are iconic and exclusive to the hero characters in the dragon quest franchise) and perhaps some self-buff spells.
I could picture it. Sword and shield standard attacks.
Neutral B fireball spell(frizz)
Side-B lighting strikes or ground based advancing fire columns(zapple or sizzle lighting and fire group targeting spells respectively)
Down-B self-buff spell. Either the fore-mentioned kaklang or simpler defense buffing kabuff spell.
Up-B teleportation "Zoom"(fast travel spell of the franchise) spell, likely working akin to Zelda's teleportation spell but without the ability to deal damage(and perhaps a funny nod to the "but hero bumped his head against the ceiling" message we'd get in the original games when trying to use it indoors).
Drool, followed by a heart is stolen pun.
I now need the fighters pass, but I’ll try and hold on until pay day.
@Ludovsky wow that's a whole load of info I wasnt expecting when I wrote my comment lol
But I like where you are going with yours, Dragon Quest characters would be a welcome addition, as it's a series that doesn't get its due respect in the west and I'm sure that would cause a heightened interest in the series.
Also we need something completely random like Stanley the Bugman from Donkey Kong 3 just to give us some variety
This is sooo much more than I expected. I thought there’d be 2 songs like FF but this now begs the question, will there be spirits?
@MagnaRoader it is a great series! In fact I just edited my post to even mention the many ways a DQ hero might differ from a traditional sword fighter character despite being commonly pictured using a sword and shield.
In the games they are more akin to fighter mages or paladins than pure fighters, their quality being not their sword prowess alone but rather their mastery of both sword AND magic including many spells exclusive to the hero( the fast-travel zoom, the lightning zap/zapple/Kazap spells and even the quirky kaklang spell that can turn characters into an immovable/immobile but invincible lump of steel for a short time).
@nessisonett Yeas Joker some with new spirits. His spirit board includes the Phantom Thieves from Persona 5.
@nessisonett I think that's what the "and an exclusive spirit board ontop of classic mode course" part of Joker's DLC may well entail.
Potentially literally an exclusive alternate spirit board -just- for his own franchise.i wouldn't be surprised to see characters from other Shin Megaten series beyond Persona too(and now I find myself wishing for Switch port of the Raidou Kuzunoha Devil Summoner titles as well XD )
Rivers in the Desert- YES!!!
Rivers in the Desert and Last Surprise are awesome, but no Life will Change?
The style of it all kind of reminds me of Mad Mod from Teen Titans. Anyone else agree? Haha
There are the Mii costumes too. I hope the P3 and P4 representation points to Switch releases of Golden and FES on Switch. Along with 5.
Where's Steve from roblox?
Okay, FF12 can wait. I want this stage.
@MagnaRoader im hoping for a reletively obscure indie character.
(Madeline from Celeste)
I know it's not going to happen but if it did that would be the greatest thing to me.
So exciting to see
Such a shame Life will change is not in this list. It's the song they revealed the character with how could they not have it!
The song choices are all hits, but... Where in the world is Life Will Change? That's the one song I would've expected to be there above all others.
How much you want to bet soon joker will get nerf..
