The insanely addictive free-to-play puzzle game Tetris 99 will be hosting its very first online tournament later this week in North America. The event starts on 8th March and will run until 10th March. Here's the full rundown from the official game site:
Get ready to participate in the Tetris® 99 MAXIMUS CUP online event, beginning on March 8th! Win first place (you’ll see TETRIS MAXIMUS on the results screen when you do) as many times as you can! After the event, the top 999 players with the most TETRIS MAXIMUS wins will be notified, and will each receive 999 My Nintendo Gold Points!
If you haven't had the chance to play this game yet, why not check out our review. We said it was a revolutionary take on classic Tetris and awarded it nine out of ten stars. Of course, if you already have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, you can download and play it for free right now.
A similar event for those in Europe has just been announced, too.
For those who have already played Tetris 99, will you be participating in this upcoming tournament? Have you actually won a game yet? Tell us down below.

Wasn't expecting actual rewards. That's cool.
Yes, give us more NSO content!
Wow! Great prize!
I used to think I was really good at Tetris.
then I played Tetris 99.
oof @_@
Woooow! Ten whole dollars!
@RyanSilberman That's ten dollars more than the game costs.
Oh wow. Great reward! Too bad I'm not good enough at Tetris to be able to get into the top 999
What? No Alt Piece skins or Copyrighted dance moves?
@BenAV Eh. Fair.
I have come in second place a bunch of times, never first. I need just one victory, just one! I’m definitely not winning this contest though, jeez.
One name: Wumbo.
I've won 68 games now (out of 402). No idea if I'd have a chance of finishing in the top 999 if I played non-stop during that period but I have so many other things I want to play that I don't see myself giving it a real crack. But I still think it's a really cool incentive and it's pretty crazy to think they're just giving away like almost $10,000 worth of eShop credit.
I am under the impression that this contest is only for the USA, Mexico and Canada (except the city of Quebec for some reason). If this is true, then it should be added in the article.
@DockEllisD Same here! I made it to the top 30 a few times, and I just can’t get further. I’ll throw in for a long shot at $10, though! I’ll at least make some folks earn it more than if I didn’t play, haha.
Did someone say gold points? (Puts on tetris 99 fanboy cap)
Yes I will definitely be there, I had practice my all with Tetris on my GBA SP and the Tetris 99 game itself for this.
I remember they did something like this for Tetris Party on the Wii, where there were special events and you could win Wii Points. I got a few free WiiWare games from it.
Lol, I like the game and play often i short bursts but I wouldn't stand a snowballs chance in hades against real Tetris players. In regular gameplay I think I have gotten top 10 maybe 3 times. Lol
The best I've ever done is third. I will have have to give it another go this weekend
@ReaderRagfihs By that logic you would actually make around 1000$ So about the cost of 2-3 Nintendo Switchs xD
@Charlie_Girl same. But tbf, I’m good at lasting pretty much indefinitely, that doesn’t mean I’m good at comboing, which is what this comes down to. Attacks really change the game.
@RyanSilberman Actually, that’s only one dollar.
But still, one dollar is one dollar!
On one hand, that’s $10 for free!
On the other hand, it’s not free, it costs time, probably way more than $10 is actually worth...
@MH4 It’s $10. 1 gold point is equivalent to 1¢.
Approximately one dollar to 999 people? Nintendo’s giving away almost one thousand dollars. If only I were good at this game...
@GyroZeppeli Oh never mind then! I was doing the math wrong, haha
Am I terrible at Tetris 99? Yes.
Am I hopelessly addicted? Also yes.
Am I going to hopelessly participate in the contest? Absolutely, yes.
There is no way i have a chance of getting top 999 with all the good tetris players.
I can't get past the 4th place! It's annoying! -_-
Highest place I've gotten..... 6th and that was so hard and good fighting haha.
Gotta practice now, with my luck I'll be 1000 place (if I can even get that high)
This will be a bloodbath. Lol
I wish there were more actual goals. Once I reached 1st there wasn't much to aim for. I know it's about the game and the competition, but I'm not that much of a competitive gamer anymore.
So earing a title and and even some real money, err.. gold points is good enough to pull me back and have a bunch of tries again.
@Charlie_Girl Same here. I was really good at Tetris until I saw the Tetris Championships.
So... You win $10 off your next eShop purchase? I suppose that's pretty good, considering 999 players can win. Seems like more trouble than it's worth for me, especially given my skill with the game, or lack thereof.
@SKTTR What more goals do you expect from a battle royale game mode? It's always about the last person standing.
It's like playing basketball but hoping you'd have more goals than getting the ball in the hoop.
the fact that theyre offering an essential $10 discount on games for winning a free game event is pretty cool
@ShadJV if youre already a skilled tetris player thats been playing for years this event is worth a shot. its not like people have been training specifically for this event lol
I low key appreciate the fact that they're gonna reward so many players. It makes it likely that it wont JUST be no-lifers rewarded for playing incessantly.
Also, the fact that they can run competitions and reward players through the NSO system opens a slew of possibilities in the future~
@RyanSilberman @BenAV That's also 50% back on your yearly subscription to Nintendo Switch Online.
@Not_Soos Or even a profit if you're sharing a family membership.
I finally was able to play this not too long ago. This game is great. I came in 21st place on first try. I honestly didn’t think I would get in the 20’s cause I’m sure as heck ain’t the best Tetris player out there.
The best I’ve gotten is 4th place and 5th a couple times.
This is a great idea. I hope it's available for European players too? I've managed to come first 8 times. One evening I come first 4 times over 20 games. I fancy my chances of racking up a few more victories, whether that'll be enough to get in the Top 999 though is another thing.
I absolutely love this game, its so so addictive but I know I'd have no chance at all in winning a tournament like this.
I consider myself a decent tetris player and I must have played close too 300 games but the highest I've finished is 10th and I've only managed that the once.
Honestly it gets so fast and frantic towards the end that I think alot of it comes down to to luck more than judgment.
@BenAV With stats like those I'd say you have a great chance. I'm sitting at 19 wins from 138 games which I thought was a pretty good percentage. I've actually found a Battle Royale game I'm good at!
The only problem is that this contest seems to favour quantity over quality and I don't have the time to play thousands of games which the winners surely will.
@Ooccoo_Jr Won a couple more games right after writing that comment too so up to 70, haha. I really have no idea what the top 999 will look like and how many wins would be required to make it. I should have a lot of free time so I'll try to play a bit but I won't go out of my way to play all weekend over $10. I'd be doing it more for bragging rights and the sense of accomplishment rather than the actual points.
Best I've ever finished is 14th. No gold coins for me. Enjoying the game though so will still probably take part.
Aww dang. My online subscription just ended and I won't get it up until next week.
The 1000 place person though.
@RyanSilberman 9.99 dollars times 999 players. That’s not nothing almost 10 thousand dollar
I’m certainly going to enter. I often end in the top 5 of a match and even once finished first. Surely I make a (very) small chance of winning.
I'm not sure I approve of this as it will only reward people that literally sit playing for 3 days straight. No point even trying for anybody that has an actual life! Not exactly encouraging healthy behaviour.
@brumspurant If you are going to spend 3 days farming 10 dollars of eshop credit, you already exhibit unhealthy behaviour.
I've only won 4 times. Perhaps if I master t-spins, I can win much more. But don't stand a chance for this.
It a shame I never got further then the top ten. Think my best score bin place 6. Still maybe I get lucky
Whoa damn. I found my reason for finally booting this baby up I guess.
I have no chance best I did was 6th
Yes, I will try my best. My best result right now is 4th, though.
@chill_e I wouldn't worry about t-spins too much, I've only ever done a couple and never really on purpose. You don't need them to win. In fact the best thing about Tetris 99 is it seems to have struck a perfect balance between skill and luck. You need some talent to win certainly, but you certainly don't need to be a crazy skilled pro gamer. Just keep plugging away and don't panic - some of my best wins came from when I was rotating blocks off the screen when almost completely filled up. There is always time for a comeback!
I've finished 2nd loads of times, top 10 the others. Once I finished 1st. Only took me 84 games to do so. I'll be participating in this if I can but I'm in Ireland, sooo am I excluded?
I somehow doubt my 1 win in 250 odd is good enough. Shame it's not top 3 as I get plenty of seconds and thirds.
@OorWullie its not the top 999 players in europe, just 999 random players who get at least 1 win
@RyanSilberman ha ha I’m so unlikely to win it doesn’t mean much to me. If I did win, the pure glow of hardcore respect would be reward enough
@BenAV that's 10 dollars less than the game costs
@manu0 No.
I'm averaging winning one out of every ten matches. I'm going to play this some, but Rocket League has double XP weekend this weekend so I'm going to be grinding that hard for RocketPass items.
@BenAV yes.
I'd be much better at the game if they let us use the analog stick instead of the d-pad. The d-pad always makes me drop the tetrimino too quickly by accident!
@Mykillvee I assume you're using a Pro Controller? The D-Pad on it is terrible unfortunately, the only real flaw of an otherwise great controller. Joy-Con are good for Tetris though at least.
It's cool there's cash up for grabs, but only 10 dollars? Okay then. Doesn't seem worth the effort though.
This is such a cool reward idea, hope they bring it over to Splatoon 2 and Smash.
If any of you have hope that you will win, well, throw it out the window because I am willing to bet there is at least 999 players better than you. Now go cry in a corner and throw your switch out the window. Thank you for reading my comment!!!
More of this, Nintendo. Actual rewards for playing.
This is a fantastic idea! I've gotten as high as 4th and can consistently get in the top 10. Hope I can finally break through this weekend and pick up a couple wins.
@puddinggirl Yeah, you're absolutely right.
I can always go back to play some Tetris Party on Wii, or Tetris DS or The New Tetris on the N64 if I need to.
Ha ha, despite my lack of skill (8th is my best finish), I'll be firing up Tetris this weekend for sure.
You have to be in it to win it! Plus, what do you have to lose? Each match last only a couple of minutes.
This isn't as good as Xbox Live's 1vs100 but it's something.
I'm still waiting for additional modes to be added to the game.
@BenAV
10x0 = 0
@RodSD64 What's with the multiplication?
I won 73 games out of 184. This will be fun.
@BenAV I've been trying to use both the joycon and the pro controller, but I'm just not good with a d-pad. Why they only allow the d-pad for the controls is beyond me. I don't see why they can't just add another controller option. I was terrible at Lumines Remastered when it first came out because it was limited to the d-pad and once they updated it for analog, It felt and played so much better.
@Mykillvee Fair enough. I guess they figured that most people prefer to play Tetris with a d-pad, which is probably true, but there's certainly no harm in including more options for those like yourself who prefer otherwise. The game overall, while great, is pretty barebones so hopefully they continue to add to it, including more control customisation.
@BenAV
