German-based game developer Matthias Linda is hoping to release his SNES style RPG Chained Echoes on the Nintendo Switch. This game has been in development for two and half years and is inspired by fantasy titles of the '90s, taking place in a 16-bit world where dragons are as common as piloted mechanical suits.
Like all good JRPG, you'll take control of a group of heroes who must bring peace to a continent where war has been waged for generations. The game combines the simplicity of retro games with more modern design principles to offer a fast-paced adventure. Other than this, players can expect 20-25 hours of play time, no random encounters (as enemies can be seen around the game world), tons of items to be looted, stolen or crafted, a complex skill and equipment system, the ability to customise your own airship and music inspired by games from the PSX era.
The game will be released in English only, with further stretch goals made for additional language support. At the time of writing, the Kickstarter project has raised around €35,000 (58% of the funding goal) and has an initial target of €60,000. The funding required for a Switch release is €80,000. If this particular stretch goal is not met, the game may still be ported to this platform and the PlayStation 4 at a later date. If you want to help out, there are multiple pledges you can make, with many of them including a digital copy of the game and various other goodies.
Take a look at the official trailer below and tell us in the comments if you'll be backing this Kickstarter project:

Hmm it looks good but I’m also not hugely blown away either . Hope it does well but I rarely back Kickstarter projects anymore .
Nice! It's like Xenoblade in 2D !
Looks more like a 32-bit game.
The animations and cut scenes are too fluid and detailed. It does look really amazing though
Looks and sounds delightful; I’m not a huge fan of RPGs but this certainly impressed me with its art design and music. Hope it succeeds its goals, gets released and proves to be popular for fans and supporters.
Looks great! I’ll definitely pick it up if they pull it all together.
That overworld! I want!
Wow. Just... Wow! I didn´t know about this game, but it´s definitely on my radar now, if it makes it to the Switch (which is still quite far away from what I see).
It´s like a SNES version of Xenoblade X lol, but with turn-based combats.
Wow so many Games thrown into one. Looks rly neat though. Will def buy!
Estimated delivery - September 2021... : /
kickstarter, bleh. I wash my hands of the sins of that site.
The visuals remind me of Owlboy, it looks good.
When I read "SNES style JRPG" I was instantly hoping for a Secret of Mana Style combat
The game looks good anyway!
I'll bookmark it just in case. Loving the art, but the combat needs more flare ha!
Really really beautiful graphics!!!!! Looks more like 32 than 16 bit to me. Looks like a huge promise!
Looks like a Saturn game. In a good way.
Color me waiting for its inevitable release.
Fantastic, looking forward to this one.
Looks pretty awesome if you ask me. And about the perfect length for a game like this. Now I just have to hope that the story is worth playing for.
Wow the game looks phenomenal and it seemed to just keep getting better. That mech snippet looked even better than I imagined. My only gripe is although the animations and stuff are nothing short of amazing, this art style is not my favorite. Like, Owlboy looks similar and I do think it’s beautiful, but there’s something not right with it. It’s a taste thing I’m sure. I hope it’s not read the wrong way: I don’t think I’d ever be able to make something look so good in pixel style and it’s beautiful, but it also looks cheap at the same time. I’m sure it’s a really hard balance to keep as a developer. And it will no way stop me from getting it.
I think I’ll back this I just really want it for Switch and no other. So hopefully that stretch goal is met!
This looks great!
@jufonuk Just because it's "SNES-style" doesn't mean it's 16-bit. It's like how Yooka-Laylee is "N64-Style" but it doesn't look like a total eyesore.
@mazzel there is actually this indie game in development that is in its very early phases but the of the project aim is to re-create an Snes action RPG and they mentioned Secret of Mana / Evermore , Terranigma and others as being the influence for the project. They had a site but I believe they are changing domains so it's down. They just made an instagram https://www.instagram.com/bornofdreamers/
Which I believe also has a link to their twitter they also got some music over at https://soundcloud.com/user-554482690
The game looks amazing but I have no interest in anything in Kickstarter. Once it hits retail though that's a different story.
It does look cool, but... man the market is flooded with retro games. I've already preordered FFXII, and frankly one fantasy/sci-fi semi-linear RPG is enough for my library.
Wow this is super pretty. I'll have to keep an eye on it.
This is super pretty but something about the design of the human characters is offputting. Will certainly hop on a Switch release.
@UtopiaXD last update is more than a year ago... Not placing my bets on that one
This actually looks great but i've been burnt so many times on Kickstarter that i don't really use it anymore.
This looks preeeettty nice!
Now that's some pretty pixels
You had me at "no random encounters"
I like it more if kickstarter had a Switch Physical options as I seen others that I supported come with Physical option. Problem is the goal must reach 80,000Euro aka ~91,000USD to get this option and so far it barely reached the 50,000Euro so that makes this harder to think it will make it. But I was also told by another kickstarter the reason they couldn't get a physical was because it would cost 60,000USD to get Nintendo to make it. So does anyone know the truth to this as well? It's 16bit but looks pretty good for it.
Looks okay, but I have seen better.
