For the first time ever, the Nintendo Switch version of Diablo III: Eternal Collection will play host to the Darkening of Tristram anniversary event. This limited-time event - which runs until 31st January - allows veterans and newcomers alike the chance to explore the franchise's past history by playing through the original Diablo levels and slaying multiple classic bosses.
The anniversary event will give you the chance to unlock unique transmogrification effects, achievements, portraits, pets and more. Some rewards will be harder than others to find and may require you to unlock multiple achievements before they can be obtained. Here are some of the rewards on offer:
Below is Blizzard's official rundown of the event:
Your journey begins on the trail of a group of mysterious cultists causing trouble in Sanctuary. As you hunt them down in Adventure Mode, you’ll uncover clues leading to a portal into Tristram’s past, and the terrifying darkness that took hold of the town so many years ago. . . .
Follow the clues and you’ll soon find yourself in a realm of glorious RetroVision™, where an all-too-familiar cathedral looms. Explore the depths and you’ll discover familiar enemies and iconic items, all brought to life in the Diablo III engine. Meanwhile, deep beneath the catacombs, the Dark Lord himself awaits any intrepid adventurer who dares to challenge him. . . .
Will you be returning to Hell to participate in this event? Tell us in the comments.

I should really get into this someday.......too many other games to be at the moment.
It's good to see Blizzard supporting the Switch version with all these cool features and extra content along with other platforms. If only other third parties could realize that Switch should be supported on an equal footing with other consoles...
I heard about this and I’ve always wanted to play this mode
I know what I'll be doing till the 31st then
@CurryPowderKeg79 I double dipped, technically triple - PS3, PS4, then Switch. Totally worth it for the portability alone! Game runs awesome on Switch
Sounds fun, count me in.
@Dm9982 @CurryPowderKeg79 I have quadruple dipped, Xbox 360, PS4, Xbox One and Switch. Plus I have it on PC although I didn't pay for it so to speak unless you count paying for a years worth of WoW and getting it with that deal. But I didn't just pay for the years worth of WoW for Diablo alone, and if you do then I Quintuple dipped. 😂
@Spoony_Tech Yes yes you should
Awesome event dungeon
Awesome game. Went for the PS4 version just last week because it was under 20 bucks on their store. I mean, I love my Switch, but it was 40 there where it's usually 60
@Tasuki Hahaha! Can’t say I blame ya! Great game!
And for anyone looking to continue the Loot/Grind fix during D3 downtime/burnouts, pick up Monster Hunter Gen Ultimate. It’s the only series I’ve found that scratches the Diablo itch as well as Diablo does.
@ilikeike It's a 6 year old game going for double, or some cases triple what it does on other platforms. They'd be lynched if they DIDN'T include the same content and some kind of bonus for the Switch version.
@RedMageLanakyn Haha, yeah they probably would be lynched.
I however, have been a fan of the series since D2 patch 1.08 (read 1998), and honestly I was just happy to have portable Diablo. 😆 When I saw how well D3 was Runnin on Switch, I was content with just that. Extremely happy it’s getting continued support moving forward, and do hope it receives all patches that the other consoles do. Blizzard is a crazy amazing company... honestly don’t think I’ve seen another company support games as far out as they do. Heck, they were still supporting D2 even after D3 released!
@Dm9982 well, I'm tempted to quadruple dip. Same as I did for Skyrim- PS3, PC, PS4 and Switch.
Great!
Glad the switch version gets the full support.
@rSp8 I did the same with Skyrim - 360, PS3, PS4, and Switch. Sadly I haven’t played it on Switch yet, even though I got it at release, lol. My backlog.... my insane backlog....
@BensonUii I believe he owns it just hasn't played it yet.
@Dm9982 Yes it is a great game. People ask me how I can justify buying it so many times In just reply it gives me more character slots to play around with 😂. Seriously though the main reason for the Switch..... Diablo on the go!!
I loved the original Diablo, cannot wait!
It's too bad a bug is there, where you can't get the cow pet. Waiting for a patch.
@Tasuki 😂 Exactly thou! I’ve been waiting on portable Diablo for awhile. I had that thought around the time of DS.
Let's not bring up talk about current gen homebrews
I was curious if that content would come to the Switch version, but definitely didn't expect it to come so soon. Probably will get to it with my next season character.
@Tasuki I single dipped but it wasn’t even on my radar, got it as a gift for Christmas and enjoying it, this event sounds cool!
@CurryPowderKeg79 PC, PS3, PS3 again (new version) and Switch. I had no problem buying it 4 times as it is a great game.
Great support
I quit D3 when I was on PC, sometime almost 3 years back. It was a ton of fun and I knew I had to move on and play something else. I skipped the PS4 version because I work travel too much at the time. Then out of the blue, D3 came to the Switch. I bought it again and now I'm hooked! Bet you guys are bored hearing this; I play D3 eve-ry-where! Grocery store, bus, Grab, on holiday, at my grandma's house, at work, in the car, anywhere and I love it! Currently doing Rifts and Bounties for fun.
Hope to see Path of Exile on the Switch next!
At least they should fix the necromancer curses with the event.
My first Diablo game and I'm loving it.
Highly recommended for anyone!
only PC here with diablo but if switch/console of your choosing works the same way; cool.
it's a kinda fun thing to keep d3 fresh (100 years isn't fresh but sure). i hate the mobile thing but i will download and play i'm sure.....
@BensonUii I've had it since day one. Problem was I was still playing Dark Souls at the time. I also have a huge backlog of games I want to play and Diablo doesn't fit right now as I know once I start I will play it for dozens if not 100's of hours and touch none of those games.
I just finished the Labyrinth Level 16 and defeated the boss there.
Got nothing on rewards or pets, nearly lost my character and not sure where I can continue hunting for these pets now...
Is there a requirement for accessing the level? I started a new file and the portal isn't there in Old Tristram.
@BensonUii I dabbeled with Diablo on the PS One, as I didn't have a PC at the time and never played Diablo 2. I was excited to play Diablo III on PC, as I stated before I got it free for paying for a year of WoW but the controls just didn't hit home with me. Tried on the Xbox 360 and have been hook d since. Can't say which class I like the best as I enjoy all of them but I lean more towards DH, Necromancer and WD as I tend to love pet builds in RPGs the most. Right now on Switch I am playing a Whirlwind Barb as that the gear you get from the current season.
@ShadJV Diablo is one of those game that I can play for awhile, take a break for a few months or so to play other games and then jump right back in when there's a gaming drought.
I have triple dipped on the switch version and I will take a break from red dead 2 for this event before the end of the month. This game is my [removed]!
Please mind the language! - Octane
@Trellgoth it's in old Tristam. If you look at the world map you'll see a pentagram. Go there, enter the portal.
@Trikeboy start a lv1 character for the butcher pet. Don't get any xp in advance. Just hop into the portal and finish it in 1 go.
There are some expansive guides. Just Google them, instead of asking questions here 😀
@Ek1mus yeah, I know. Been there, done all 16 stages of the Labyrinth, defeated the main boss these and got nothing.
Gonne do another run soon, see what I missed. Have a guide at the ready (again).
D3 needs more events like this. I’d rather crawl this dungeon than run endless rifts as a postgame. It’d be really nice of each season had an event that rotates theough over the course of the year...
@CurryPowderKeg79 I've quadroople dipped on this game now (not counting previously owning it on PS3). I had Diablo III on PC and PS4 (without Necromancer DLC). Then recently grabbed the Eternal Collection on both Xbox One X and Switch on sale for $20 each. Both getting it on sale and having friends to play with made the decision to buy again a lot easier.
@Tasuki My first experience into Diablo was with the base version of Diablo III. It was tainted from the terrible auction house but with the release of Ultimate Evil edition became much better tuned and a better experience. I'm enjoying the Eternal Collection but at some point I feel I need to experience the original games.
@Nico07 Honestly there's not that much of a difference maybe a few tweaks on skills and bug fixes but not much.
I charged through this event last night and slayed the “Dark One.” Got a hilariously aged cutscene. I went up over 20 levels, slightly increased difficulty and new to the game. It made me miss Diablo 1, because I didn’t die once and Im finding this game mindlessly easy.
AHH (not so) FRESH MEAT
This is really awesome! I never imagined they'd be doing limited time content in this game, let alone a 1 month use of a remake of the original game.
The only question remains: Can you fill the entire groundspace of Tristram in piles of gold? And do TP scrolls still max at 99?
Enjoying my time with Switch version of Diablo Eternal.
Put one week into Season 15 and got a monster Barb in return.
Wrath of the Wastes set is ridiculous, whirlwind does like +3000% damage.
Never did seasons on PS4 because my characters were already established.
The Switch Loot Goblin is also OP, farming goblins in that realm is a blast.
Everytime Greed hits a wall, she drops a goblin. You can kill dozens.
I usually enter the Realm with empty inventory and leave nearly full:
Gems, crafting materials, millions in gold, Legendaries dropping everywhere.
Going to create second Barb to use level reduced gear & do Darkening Event.
Season 16 will be a Monk. This game is too much fun.
