As niche as the shoot 'em up genre might be, on the Switch it’s growing in size by the day. If Ghost Blade HD sounds familiar, that’s because the developer Hucast Games previously released this bullet hell shooter on the Wii U eShop in 2017.
The German-based developer has now announced the game will be revived in 2019 for the Nintendo Switch. No exact date has been locked in. The game will support TATE mode for vertical play and will also include leaderboards, achievements and a two player mode. Publishing will be handled by Eastasiasoft Limited.
Below are the official tweets confirming the game’s arrival on Switch:
As noted in the tweet above, the game will receive both a digital and physical release. In our Wii U eShop review, we gave Ghost Blade HD seven out of ten stars and said it's one for hardcore arcade shmup players.
Are you interested in another shmup on Switch? Did you play this title previously on the Wii U? Tell us below.

Tate mode = sold.
Ugh... use the whole screen please. I would REALLY appreciate it if they left an option for full screen. I would buy this in an instant if it did. Obligating me to this type of view, makes my wallet go right back in my pocket. And while I’m ranting about shmups done right... Why can’t I just get an Einhander remake?
Why is every shoot’em up pilot on the Switch a buxom lady in very little clothing?
Looks like it's drawing heavy inspiration from early Cave games, which looks fantastic. If only someone could convince Cave to port their stuff to Switch. Or update all the iPhone ports I bought so they'd work on newer iOS updates.
@RadioHedgeFund Why not?
@GrailUK where are the hunky guys to perv over as well? It’s a tad sexist to exclude 50%* of the planets’ sexual preferences.
Priced Right, I'm in.
@RadioHedgeFund Maybe all the hunky guys in the Ghost Blade universe could campaign for equal rights. Could be the backdrop for the sequel?
Will probally pick up the retail release.
@RadioHedgeFund And if there is more otomoe visual novel games aviable in English than bishoujo visual novel games, would you complain about that too? (Do we even have other bishoujo VN games in English than Nekopara?) that would seem wrong to you too, right?
@tobibra I don't think he / she was being deadly serious
Have a look at Gunbird 1&2, Samurai Aces, Tengai and Sengoku Cannon, there should be some characters for you.
Also, if you're lucky the Swich will sooner or later get some Cho Anki games.
@EmirParkreiner Oh my god, if they put Ai Cho Aniki that would make my day!
So eastasia is the sole seller am I reading this right?
@RadioHedgeFund try Black Bird
@RadioHedgeFund cus it helps selling the games...
This is a fun game on Wii U. I'll probably pick it up on Switch, if the price is right.
There are also some good widescreen choices on the Switch:
Good 16:9 vertically scrolling: RXN Raijin, Zero Gunner 2-
OK 16:9 vertically scrolling: Sky Force Anniversary & Reloaded
Good 16:9 horizontally scrolling: Black Bird, Touhou Azure Reflections, Super Hydorah
OK 16:9 horizontally scrolling: Samurai Aces Episode III Sengoku Cannon
Good 4:3 horizontally scrolling with 16:9 stretching option: Tengai, Sol Divide, Thunder Force IV
@RadioHedgeFund It's an anime crowd thing. They love their pervy anime characters.
This is a great game, i have it on three systems and can see that becoming four.
vertical aspect ratio....again 😒
So hard to find a high quality shoot em up that isn't a vertical port or isn't a japanese import with little translation.
Caught this one at the end of the WiiU era and enjoyed it. I recall there is a way not to display the scantily clan in the margins for family-safe play.
