Sonic Mania Plus is arguably the greatest Sonic game of all-time. Among critics, it became the highest-rated outing for the blue blur in 25 years. Its original launch in 2017 and DLC update earlier this year also had fantastic sales on the Switch.
If you haven't picked up Sonic's latest game in physical form just yet, this latest discovery via Twitter might be of interest. Amazon Italy is listing a "Sonic Double Pack" for the Nintendo Switch. The description reveals one of the included games is Sonic Mania Plus, which comes with an art book and reversible cover, but no name is provided for the second game. All that's mentioned about it is a brief description - explaining how it's a Sonic title characterised by innovative 3D graphics. This had led to speculation that the second game is Sonic Forces, originally released on the Switch in 2017.
The page listing also mentions the double pack is coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One at some point in the future. Whether or not there'll be a release of this two-pack outside of this region is currently unknown.
What do you think the second game in this double pack listing could be? Would you be up for a two pack Sonic deal? Did you purchase a physical copy of Sonic Mania Plus, or did you buy the DLC online when it was released? Tell us below.

Ayyy Phantom Ruby Saga pack
mania is great but it still doesnt surpass the classic mega drive era titles
the master system titles were great too n had huge levels that were fun to explore. why doesnt sega ever give us those titles in a bundle?
I can see myself buying Forces if it comes with Mania. Other than that, no dice.
On the one hand, Forces makes the most sense to be the other game since it's the most recent 3D Sonic game. But wouldn't it be incredible if the other bundled title was Sonic Generations, so that way you get two of the best (and most nostalgic) Sonic games in one package?
Regardless, it would be awesome to have Generations on Switch, bundle or not.
@paihia The Mega Drive games are being re-released in the Mega Drive HD version. Unfortunately, to me at least, it is not worth it since Sonic 3 has been removed. Apparently there are copy right laws due to Michael Jackson making the music.....I think that is what he wanted and holding it back just destroys the point.
@paihia they technically have had a few in a bundle. I believe some were unlockable in Sonic mega collection plus for PC/ps2/Xbox original.
Sonic Forces is characterized by innovative 3D graphics?
how many times is sega gonna resell the same game?
@Rika_Yoshitake The countless Mega Drive rereleases should answer your question.
Is it sonic 4? A download release that has 3d graphics.
No, I don't care, I know Digimon Survive is coming to North America for Nintendo Switch, and am going to play it. It's coming out next year. I know this.
It makes sense, but I already own Mania Plus (and rented Forces), so there's not much point for me to pick this up.
It's good for those that are curious enough in trying both games though.
I didn't buy Sonic Forces on PS4, I'm certainly not getting it on the Switch!
Now, Sonic Mania? Bought it on BOTH!
I’ll admit that I’ve disliked every sonic game I’ve played... even Mania, 2, and CD. I know that the point of Sonic is that he moves fast, but I just don’t have the reflexes for the speed he goes I guess. I find the games frustrating. They should make a Sonic game where he’s elderly and moves at a fourth of the speed.
@justin233 In all honesty, I think that’s where modern Sonic games go wrong to be honest. They forget that the game is supposed to be a platformer too.
Take the 2D games - they reward players who learn the game with momentum, opening up shortcuts and other paths. If you’re a casual gamer, the earlier levels still have small sections where you can easily just press down on the D-pad to feel the speed.
On the 3D side, most of the games neglect the platforming aspect and just force speed with the boost formula. Whilst the sense of speed is nice, there’s nothing really to break up the gameplay and the 2D sections feel clunky.
Personally, I feel the Adventure games while flawed, featured a good balance between speed and platforming in 3D. SA1 even had momentum (try spin dashing down Windy Valley) whilst the controls felt more refined in SA2. Unfortunatelty, the Adventure games themselves are flawed and products of their time and whilst I wouldn’t want to see an Adventure 3, I would like to see a refinement of Sonic’s gameplay from SA1 and SA2 alone.
Just my 2 cents.
@TheMadPolarBear I haven’t subjected myself to 3D Sonic torture so I can’t say if I agree or disagree with your point about those.
@MysteryCupofJoe Wouldn't they just use the music from the PC version?
Which is exactly what I was going to post about. I, or my parents bought me, the original boxed release of the PC version of S3K (though sadly they ended up tossing all the game itself, the box which I believe also came with a comic book, and another Sega PC games demo disc I might still have. But I ended up buying the game again when one reprint of it came with the older PC version of Sonic CD (I believe there was like a 1996 version and a 2011 version?) as a double-pack.
@TheMadPolarBear sonic adv had good action stages but the "adventure" side of things was pretty crap.. I had fun with the game but could never play through it again. would be nice to just have all the action stages from adventures 1 & 2 compiled into one package but Im sure that could never happen
@paihia Yeah that’s pretty much it. I think they can make a solid 3D Sonic game out of the Adventure Action stages but ignore all the rest (Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Gamma, Big etc).
Agreed. I struggle to play through the games but I am happy to return and play just the Sonic levels or Sonic and Shadow levels in SA2. The rest of the games are incredibly dated and should be left out.
@justin233
My problem with Sonic is that the whole point is him going fast, but the games, especially the 2D ones, punish you for it. He controls awfully if you don't have momentum or speed and yet they have precise platforming sections in the levels like a Mario game that just don't feel very good. You're even punished for going at top speed with off-screen spikes and enemies that you run into since you can't see them coming. The 3D games are actually better in that regard but the problem is that they're not polished at all (at least the majority of them), and when you play them you have to wonder if the developers are trolling you or it's the first game they've ever made.
@paihia it's better than Sonic 1 and 2 though.
@Dalarrun lol what?
None of the good Sonic games have enemy placement like that.
Adventure 2 battle would be amazing
@MysteryCupofJoe I never heard that before, that Sonic 3 was removed because of that? Maybe it's his Estate getting in the way, sad, maybe they can sort it out. People love the music from Sonic 3 and a lot probably don't even realise he had a hand in it.
@justin233 my exact issue with every sonic game I've ever played too. Run ready fast then hit an enemy as you didn't even see them coming.
@Dalarrun : You've pretty much summed up my feelings toward Sonic in general, and this is including even the "best" Sonic games.
I think it's a nice concept, but the developers/producers have no idea on how to design a fun and rewarding game around that concept. The games are much too frustrating for their own good because you cannot prepare yourself for oncoming hazards (at least without having mastered the level beforehand).
sonic is bursting with potential its the devs who are letting us down they just cant seam to nail the formula of exhilarating speed n tight level design but the games keep selling so they are stuck in this loop of financial statistics that seam to be stunting any creative wonders from sonicteam
That definitely sounds like Sega to sell the only Sonic game you need together with some other Sonic game.
@IBeAGamer Nah, I quit Sonic 2 because of that. Even in the second act of the green hills clone, going on the first diagonal spring launches you straight into the monkey robot and gives you very little time to react. I think's it's bizarre that people celebrate it for it's design. Sure, after the first time you start to memorize where the enemies and traps are located, but for a new player it's a nightmare. Same for Sonic Generations. I went from playing the stages and dying immediately, to 100%ing the game (aside from a bs online achievement that failed to be recognized). It's too fast for it's own good, along with the stationary jump killing me half the time due to how stiff and limited it is.
If the screen was a third bigger I might play Sonic 2. But not until then. At least in Sonic 3 & Knuckles it wasn't too much of an issue.
On a side note, I still want an improvement to SA1 and SA2's sonic stages. You could easily see things coming 90% of the time the first time, momentum and speed were well balanced, using the spin-dash to get up to high locations was exhilarating, and they felt like an actual 3D games.
Yes the boost formula is a cool spectacle...but let's face it. It's a 2.5 D game with a few limited 3D moments added in, along with all the much worse 2D segments they force on you. Even in the "3D" segments, you are often switching rails in a 2-Dimensional fashion, picking a few side paths from those 2-Dimensional sections, and then doing very few actual 3D sections like drifting around a corner or homing attacking in different directions.
Meanwhile in SA1 and SA2 even linear sections like SA2's grind railing had more 3D aspects to it. Having to balance your position, being able to jump off a rail to another rail 50 feet below like in Final Rush, or going off to do a homing attack on enemies or item boxes. All of this from riding a rail! The only thing bad about SA2's action stages was the lack of additional paths compared to SA1, horrible control scheme (B BUTTON), and hallway design. Why couldn't they have improved on this formula? Instead we got Sonic Heroes, a game with good idea but bad execution, and Sonic O6 which shut down the SA formula from resurfacing again.
Saying that Sonic Mania is arguably the best Sonic game ever is going too far. Yes, Christian Whitehead is the best 2D Sonic programmer since Yuji Naka, but the artists involved in Sonic Mania aren't nearly as good as the original artists and that's the reason why the new zones and music in Sonic Mania can't hold a candle to the remixed ones.
Sonic Double Pack? If any newcomer to the series buys this, they'll probably find it jarring from their Forces' and Mania's vastly different gameplay & styles.
@FlameRunnerFast
Yeah, I don't get it. I can understand people praising the characters, art design, and music of most of the games, but I haven't played a Sonic game that didn't either have mediocre level design or tons of glitches. Another problem is that they can't seem to stick with a certain type of Sonic game. They always experiment with different things instead of focusing on one design and improving upon it, like you said with Sonic Adventure. I don't think the original three were outright terrible, but I view Sonic games as more of a guilty pleasure kind of thing.
Edit: the 2D Sonic games would have greatly benefited by some kind of arrow pointing towards off screen hazards with some kind of measurement to let you know you're getting closer and closer, so you know when to jump even if you can't see them yet. Some fans argue that they made the level design cheap like that to encourage level replays, but I argue that I'm more likely to replay a game if the level design is good and not cheap in the first place.
Seems like a cheap way to get more people to buy Forces ( Since Mania has been selling like hot cakes, I already brought it 4 times... PS4, Switch, PC and then Plus for the Switch since I wanted a gamd card to go with the Mega Drive games.)
@Captain_EO Yeah. It wasn't a problem before during the remakes for the PS2, GameCube, X-Box, and DS. However, that seems to be the case now. It is bad since I know Michael Jackson would have wanted his music to be heard in a Sonic game.
Here's hoping they don't remove Sonic 3 forever.
@KingMike I didn't realize the music was different for the PC version. They should but I prefer the Michael Jackson music. They are just so memorable.
@MysteryCupofJoe @KingMike My favourite music in Sonic 3 & Knuckles is not MJ's music but other zones like Angel Island. I hope that Sega re-releases Sonic 3 & Knuckles or even better remasters it whether they use the Mega Drive or the Windows soundtrack. It is my favourite game in the whole franchise.
@Dalarrun Being unable to sense offscreen obstacles in the Sonic games is something that I personally can't decide whether its cheap or not. I would usually say yes for any other game but I'm hesitant to call out Sonic for it. And it's not an intense nostalgia bias as I haven't played the games all that much except Sonic Mania which I got a month ago.
I'm not sure about having a distance tracker since I don't want it to become too reaction based like the 3D Sonic games. Maybe increasing the number of rings you get should minimize the amount of knockback you receive but you would still lose rings as usual.
@TheMadPolarBear have you played Sonic Generations? That has a good amount of platforming in it.
@HammerKirby3 Yeah Generations is a good game but I still think Sonic controls clunky in the platforming sections. The actual boost mechanics and sense of speed controls great though
@Dalarrun If you haven't yet, I'd recommend playing SA1 and SA2. The side characters are fine for the most part, and the main stages are great. Or if you can't stand the other characters, you could rip the gamecube versions, get a 100% save file, and play them on Dolphin.
And yeah I wish they had a mechanic like that as well. It would certainly make the levels easier to deal with. Then just make it a toggable setting for veterans from the start with a screen prompt (not buried in a setting). Other games employ as similar setting like FE's easy mode, so why can't Sonic?
I don't really care much about Sonic.
But that first stage in Sonic Adventure 2 (Dreamcast ofcourse) where you dropped out of a helicopter with the catchy music... that is one of the best levels in gaming of all time.
@DigiF4N I don't know how that's relevant to the article, but Digimon Survive does look pretty cool and I'm fairly interested in it based off what we've seen of it so far.
@Dalarrun While I see what you're getting at, I feel like the way speed works for Sonic in games like 3&K and Mania are the best example of how it should be.
I suppose the games do have a big learning curve if you're not used to it. But, they reward you greatly with speed when you avoid enemies and obstacles.
That can't be said about every level, but that's usually the case for most.
@BigKing City Escape is iconic... Still one of the best.
I own the original Collectors Edition of Sonic Mania and the Plus content, so this will be a pass from me. However, depending on pricing it might be worth it solely for Mania, for those that don't own it anyway.
@FlameRunnerFast
I know that the Sonic Adventure games are popular with fans, but man from what I've seen they're glitchy. Like, really glitchy. They were praised when they first released but if you go back and look at the scores for the re-releases the difference is severe. That's because, unlike 3D Mario games, Sonic Adventure hasn't aged well at all. It sucks because I really would like to love a Sonic game.
@ilikeike sorry i didn't mean to go off topic i'm trying to stop the voices i hear saying that it's not coming to the switch and i can't play it when it comes next year, sorry i didn't mean to off topic, i'm really into digimon and am going to play this one
@Dalarrun I'd just say try it out and DON'T get the re-releases on Steam, Xbox, or PS. That may be where you are hearing they are glitchy, along with those versions having much worse sound mixing. Get either the Dreamcast or Gamecube version. I've played SA1 and SA2 quite a bit, and I've only encountered a few glitches in all my time playing unless I tried to break the game. Like in Crazy Gadget in SA2 where I purposely skipped an intentional way to get a better time...and fell into a death plane.
You shouldn't run into many glitches at all.
@DigiF4N There's no need to apologize for being excited for a game! I'm pretty excited for it too, I'm not the biggest Digimon fan but the game looks really fun and the fact that it's coming to Switch is always a big plus for me. It looks like just the kind of game I'd want to play on the go.
I still think, Sonic Forces was underrated. It was a bit short, the story could have been better and some level parts were too simple. But except these issues, it was a fine game. Great levels, great soundtrack, good Gameplay and even the Rookie levels were good
Sonic forces was a good but not a great game.......
@paihia I would love to play those 8bit Master System games. I hope the release a collection under Sega Ages.
It has got to be Sonic Colo(u)rs.
It's confirmed to contain Sonic Mania and Forces. It is now available for pre-order in Australia.
