Level 5 has today shared two videos for Yo-Kai Watch 4 on Nintendo Switch, giving us plenty of gameplay footage to sink our teeth into ahead of its upcoming release.
The video above is the Tokyo Game Show 2018 trailer for the game. This gives us a quick look at some of the gameplay elements you can expect to enjoy when the title releases, although much of it is expanded upon in the additional video down below. There, you'll find an extended look at the game’s combat system and free-roam exploration.
It's interesting to see the franchise make the leap to the Switch, with the game naturally embracing the graphical upgrades made possible thanks to the more powerful hardware. The video shows off the odd bit of exploring, with the player speaking to characters on the streets and such, a decent chunk of battling gameplay, and even the odd cutscene or two. Check it out here:
The game is set to arrive in Japan next spring - after receiving a delay from its originally scheduled winter release - and we still have no word on any western localisation plans. Of course, we'd still expect the game to make its way over at some point - just as the others have done in the past.
What do you think of the game so far? Are you excited to play Yo-Kai Watch 4 on Switch if it does eventually makes its way over to the west?

The games look fantastic, it's just a shame they don't interest me much. This will be a treat for fans though.
the gameplay looks interesting. but, Yokai just never keen my eye even back on 3DS.
(Looked at Cute Jibanyan) =
(Looked at Scary Anatomy Model, Scary Jibanyan from Yokai Watch Shadow) =
Oh, Gosh....
I think i CANNOT play the 4th series due to Scary Yokai based on the Anime as well.
I believe that game will be rated Teen / CERO B / PEGI 12.
Looks cool, the battles remind me of Ni No Kuni but I guess that isn't suprising when you consider the developer Hopefully it comes to other countries faster than the current situation with the series...
And yeah @Anti-Matter that sounds catastrophic 😂 Thanks for bringing the humour to the comments section (I'm serious!)
Yeah this just hypes me more for the 2019 Pokemon game
The battles look like a lot of fun!
The gameplay looks completely different from the 3DS titles, go figure. It looks really polished though.
Framerate is balls.
This looks like it will be one hell of a game. Quite different than previous installments. Sign me up!
@LUIGITORNADO because this was an early showcase, game is not finished yet.
Pretty good indication as to how Pokemon 2019 will look. Quite impressed. Frame rate is quite poor but besides that looks good!
There are actually people here who think that the game looks GREAT ? o_O
I'm speechless...
@Anti-Matter I haven’t played the games but aren’t they about spirits and such? That normally goes hand in hand with creepy or scary stuff. Can’t say I didn’t expect there to be creepy looking monsters.
I’m dying for details on the combat system.
@AlternateButtons Ok no problem with that... but apparently on what we can see RIGHT NOW, there are people who think that the game looks great... o_O
@Cobalt ....yes? Everyone's entitled to their opinion. It's not hard to see why lots of people like it though. The graphics are bright and beautiful and the gameplay seems to be simple fun. Also, it looks exactly like the upgrade a lot of people want for 3DS games when they make the jump to HD. Yes there's some notable performance issues but hopefully those get ironed put before release.
@AlternateButtons
I think the game looks great but at this stage it's clear not much will change. Its coming out in may 2019 which isnt really that far away when you take into consideration they need to take time to produce all the copies of the game. That takes time too
@Cobalt Well, they might mean the actual game itself as opposed to the graphics. When I say a game looks good, I'm more aiming it at what you have to do and the vibe of it as opposed to how realistic etc etc the graphics. are. Graphics don't make a good game.
@Silkyinsect_UK @Arcamenel I don't know why you guys have to bring a completely different franchise into this conversation made by a completely different company whose first mainline Switch installment has been a 60 USD mobile game expansion that reuses the same assets with choppy animations from the 3DS that had huge frame rate drops on the system and barely looks any better than 3DS visuals on top of said franchise's company not caring about the thoughts of anyone that isn't a Japanese child.
Anyway, back to the topic at hand, It feels more insertive when you view the YKW games from directly behind the character and with fully rotating camera rather than the top down view that we were usually used to on 3DS. They still keep a map with a quest mapper and a sort of compass at the top to let you know how close you are to the objective. I always liked that about this series because it lets the worlds be big, open, expansive and you'll still know exactly where you need to go. The Ni No Kuni 2/Yo-Kai Watch Busters Gameplay is certainly unsurprising. It worked and people loved it. Seems that they've added a true MP stat in this iteration, which is strange. Usually, Yo-Kai didn't have an MP guage and could just attack with magic and physical attacks as they pleased. I guess they want to make it more challenging than it already was or something. I sure can't wait to figure out how the Shadowside mechanic works in battle for Jibanyan to change in the battle like that. I just hope it isn't random but if it is, please let it be fair RNG.
@GrailUK How ok... So just out of curiosity, if I say that car looks good... What does that mean ?
The car is beautiful or the car drives well ?
Thanx to improve my english GrailUK !
@ZionWario Do you feel better getting that out?
@ZionWario well sorry... 👍
@ZionWario Frendo mentioned Pokemon as well... just saying 👍
@Cobalt Dude, it looks good. Hands down. This comes from a PlayStation fan. Reminds me of Ni No Kuni on PS3.
Looks good! Nice battle system. Hopefully they will improve the framerate issues, there are a lot.
This has vibes of Ni no Kuni and I love it!
Looking forward to this! The battle system looks so much more appealing!
@Cobalt
It's all opinion.
If you think the outside of the car looks good and you say so, it doesnt take away from the outside of the car, right? But you start that same car and it stutters every few blocks, it's like looking at the animations for this game. However, as everyone has already said, that can be ironed out before release.
So if they think the game looks good, I do not understand why you even have a problem with THEIR opinion.
@Arcamenel No, I honestly don't feel good about a franchise I've liked since RBY being reduced to an object of ridicule but it doesn't make it any less true and doesn't mean I can't focus on the topic at hand.
Given this mannequin's status in the anime, he's most likely going to be the first boss. So look forward to other bosses being harder after this guy.
Game looks very interesting and I love the art style. Gameplay looks solid too - just like Level 5 to make something solid. But I don't see this coming to the west until late next year. And if thats the case - I'll have lost interest by then. I'll have Smash, Pokemon and a few other gems under my belt by that time. So... Good luck to them.
@Cobalt "There are actually people here who have different OPINIONS?
O_o
I'm speechless..."
(By the way, this comment is supposed to be humorous, i don't want to start an argument)
Also, the gameplay appears much improved even from the previous TGS footage. Framerate is much more consistent, although there is still work to be done in that regard. I'm optimistic that this will turn out well whenever it finally releases. Fingers crossed for a relatively-quick localization!
The combat looks like it takes some elements of Blasters and is being married into the main RPG series. No complaints here! Ignoring the frame rate issues (which I suspect are at least partly responsible for the delay), the game looks visually pleasing.
I'm getting some Attack On Titan vibes from the one enemy. XD
Hey, this looks more interesting than the previous games. The "trainer" actually gets involved with the fight instead of just barking orders and its not turned based so if you get hit by an attack, its because you didn't dodge. Wish Pokemon did that =/
It looks awesome, I hope it doesn't take too long to come to the West!
Oh it's on Switch?
I was thinking it was going to be on 3DS. (a twilight game, I guess)
I love Level 5 games but for some reason I have yet to even try a Yokai Watch game.This looks pretty pretty goood.
I wish katie will be brought back
YW4 looks even better than I expected, I just hope there will be a good number of monsters to recruit and strategies to employ.
Meanwhile, a certain other company thinks it's a great idea to remake their 20+ years old game for a second time and make it even more simplistic while they're at it.
@Radbot42 May 2019 is like 8 months away. That is so much time for this to get cleaned up.
@RazorThin
Oh, let me explain about Yokai Watch.
Yokai Watch is basically Ghost version of Pokemon.
The Yokai in Yokai Watch are usually Cute or Cool looking, except Yokai Watch Shadow , the latest season of Yokai Watch take a place 30 years after earlier Yokai Watch. The Yokai there doesn't look Cute as earlier seasons, more creepy like GeGeGe no Kitaro (Creepy but still Safe for Kids).
Btw, Yokai itself is Spectre creatures in Japan that has different looking based on animals looking or things in Japan, same like Inuyasha.
Wow
Looks good. Gives me NinoKuni vibes. Day 1 when it comes to the US.
Definitely plan to import, and by that I mean I'll just download it.
I'll be honest, I'm not 100% for a full action battle system. But most people seem happy with it so I guess that was a good choice on their part.
@Pipq Look at 10:05 in the gameplay video.
@Cobalt
i like the art style but the frame rate in that trailer was pretty bad.
Cobalt is a known Sony fanboy and is only dismissing this game because it's coming to the Switch. I don't know why you guys feed him.
I played the demo for one of the Yokai games on 3DS but I wasn't in love with the battle system. This one looks more engaging so I'll definitely check it out. I hope Pokemon 2019 looks this good.
I think it looks great, and having played the first game this is going to be a big step up. Predicting this to be a smash hit in Japan, and hopefully will set the benchmark for what Pokemon will have to exceed next year.
Watch the first minute of the second video. All of this is in-game, none of it is cutscene or FMV. This looks fantastic for a game of this type.
Cool, l love me some Yo-Kai Watch. Also, this game looks good.
Did I also mention this game looks good.
Absolutely gorgeous 😍
Yo-Kai is a gem in my eye. Only played the original but I feel it’s narrative, world building, and charm are wonderful. It surprised me how hard it was to put down.
Sure it’s not perfect but it’s a hell of a lot of fun whether you’re 5, 15 or 50 years old. Level 5 have always created worlds that pull you in and make you care.
It's like the Pokémon game we'll never get because Gamefreak are too lazy
@Kai_ I swear if Gen 8 looks like this: www.gifs.com/gif/KZ43XG
@Cobalt If I say a movie looks good, does it mean the movie is beautiful or it looks like a movie I’ll enjoy?
I've never seen a trailer, or anyone play a yokai game, so this is my first time seeing a yokai game in action. The gameplay and music in the above video makes me sort of regret the fact I never tried any yokai game..this game looks just like the type of game I can play for many hours!
@roboshort said : "If I say a movie looks good, does it mean the movie is beautiful or it looks like a movie I’ll enjoy?"
Dunno man I'm not native.
If I'll translate your sentence in french, the meaning would be "a visually appealing movie". Like, a really good photography that gives a beautiful aspect to the image...(like the greenish photography in Matrix for example).
Looks interesting but I’ll wait to see a few reviews before I commit.
I’m surprised Level 5 haven’t done a Layton game for the switch yet but they have done one or two for mobile, I hope that’s not the way they’re going
@Cobalt The game does look great. Awesome even, I would say.
What does “great” mean to you? “Realistic” graphics are just that, realistic. Those kind of graphics are cool for some games and ridiculous for others.
The art style of this game, faithfully recreating the anime style is perfect.
It’s your entitlement that makes me speechless.
@maruse
GREAT means artistically beautiful, means nice and rich textures, means totally fluid with a constant framerate, means 3D with more than 20 polygons, means no pop up textures just in front of you, means a minimum of AA, means a minimum of normal maps on the 3D, etc...
Yokai Watch 4 is poor and unworthy of the Switch capabilities...
I'm sorry but when I read stuffs like "it reminds me Ni No Kuni 2", I can't stop laughing... I think we are in a so dry period than whatever will be shown, it'll become awesome/great/beautiful etc...
The reality :
@Cobalt Yes, because obviously your opinion is the only one that matters.
Whatever man, if that keeps you happy...
@maruse I'm not happy at all... I'd like to see games that push the hardware a little bit.
I think Bayonetta 3 is gonna show what the Switch is capable of... My only fear is that it could be on the "Switch Pro"... :/
@Cobalt I guess I'm not as demanding as you.
I like what I see, and don't need more than that. As long as the game (any game) plays well enough I don't care how it looks (although this one looks good enough to me).
To each their own though.
@maruse said "I guess I'm not as demanding as you."
I'm sure about that !
@Anti-Matter Pokemon itself isn't even an original monster collecting RPG. They basically stole all of its gameplay elements from Dragon Quest 5 which came out 4 years prior.
Yo-Kai Watch borrows WAY more concepts from Shin Megami Tensei (a monster collecting RPG that predates Pokemon by 9 years) than it does from Pokemon.
