Physical distributor and specialist Limited Run Games has revealed the Golf Story Collector's Edition for $79.99 on its Twitter page. The game will "get physical" on 28th September when pre-orders officially open. Adding to this announcement was the reveal of a partnership with Spoony Bard Productions and Infinite NES Lives to release GALF on a fully-functioning NES cartridge.
If you're not familiar with this title, Golf Story is a 2017 eShop release by Australian developer Sidebar Games and is exclusive to the Switch. It mixes the RPG genre with golf.
Will you be picking up a physical copy of this game? Are you interested in the collector's edition? Tell us in the comments below.

Insta-Double-Buy (already have the digital version)!
I won't be buying it a second time but that poster is amazing. Excellent game, anyone still on the fence should give it a chance.
Not got this one yet so picking up the cartridge release is very tempting.
Collectors is tempting this time but i need to order two more games with it, and the limit for flat €15 import cost is 3 (standard) games. Will order yooka-laylee , furi and golf story standard edition on the 28th.
The fact they're releasing an NES functional version of an NES mini-game inside of the game, that's just fantastic.
I'll probably be happy to just get a copy of the game, but that's still really good and looks like one of their best collector's editions yet.
These are certainly really nice editions, but for games many people like me bought very cheap in digital version on cheap eShops... it's too much a price difference.
I never pay so much money for any collector's edition, even of AAA games. It's nice to see them made, but Limited Run Games, as I usually say, is too limited and too expensive.
@Gowtu_Games what about that flat cost? I didn't know anything about it. Can you please explain it to me? Thanks
I love Limited Run Games.
Pick a cheap indie title and put it on a cart, bundle it with some random crap and Nintendo suckers will pay $80 for it.
They don't even realize that every game release is limited.
@BigKing
If it's just the game you're interested in, that's an option.
It's limited in the sense that they only print a few thousand copies of the game made to order, as opposed to wide releases that usually see far more printed, even if it's not unlimited.
Some bundles are better than others, this one is not just "random crap" though, and the Night Trap release is notable for having a VHS release of a cut of the game's footage.
Shame they didn't put a 2D version of Yooka Laylee or something on the N64 cartridge which came with that Collectors Edition.
But fair play to them for actually creating GALF, but what's that going to cost though? probably around $50
@RupeeClock Wow, a VHS tape of the ingame videos for all those people who don't even have a VHS recorder anymore. And you can probably just watch it on Youtube.
VHS tape, golf balls and fake trophies for $50 added on top. All crap if you ask me.
The reason why these games are printed a few thousand times is just because the demand is low. It's a great business model though, so don't get me wrong: the peeps at Limited Run Games are smart as hell... their customers not so much.
@BigKing
I think it's unfair to decry consumers because you personally don't like the merchandise.
Many of the collector's edition sets Limited Run Games have offered haven't been of much interest to me, a few have maybe like Yooka-Laylee and potentially Golf Story.
Also keep in mind that there will be a lot of people buying these collector's sets to scalp on eBay.
@RupeeClock That's the whole point. Consumers are dumb, they buy into the 'Collectors Edition' crap and are willing to spend top dollar on an inferior product just because they hope it will increase in value(it won't). You're not a collector because you bought a collector's edition.
The games that increase in value are usually the ones that were overlooked when they were released. Games that were released at the end of a console lifetime, that were pulled(possibly due to an expired license) or that became more popular after the sequels. Not this artificially created scarcity. $80 for an indie game with a golf ball is not the smartest investment. It's a $15 indie title with $5 worth of toys.
But that's why I like them. They milk the greedy scalpers and the type of dumb gamers who keep their games sealed on their shelf.
@BigKing I still think that's unfair on people who are buying these sets for their enjoyment, as a celebration of the gaming medium and the creative ideas and designs in indie games that may otherwise not get a chance for a physical release at all.
The business model extends a bit farther than just the game itself, Limited Run Games collaborates with Fan Gamer, which already produce this sort of merch for the people that really enjoy a particular game like Undertale, Hollow Knight, Celeste, Shovel Knight, Stardew Valley, Night in the Woods, and many others.
That also seems like a good indication of what games might enjoy a physical release, limited or otherwise, in the future. Hollow Knight is known to be getting a published release not by Limited Run Games early next year for example.
@BigKing The funny thing is that's I tell my girlfriend and business partner that I buy LRG collector's editions to sell them in 30 years. But that's a lie... I just really like the boxes. In fact, I plan to double dip in reverse since I won't open the boxes. First I get the physical copy, then I'll buy them digitally as I play them one by one. I don't have time to play them as they're released. I'm old, dumb and obsessed with pretty boxes of games that I know at some point I'll really enjoy playing. Now where's that $80 box of Into The Breach? That game looks awesome.
I wonder if the actual physical box will vibrate manically anytime anyone near you is speaking, just like the joycon do with every letter of every word of every line of in-game dialog.
@RupeeClock Celebration of the gaming medium? Nah, it's just consumerism. You don't celebrate a thing by buying a golf ball and fake trophy. But I guess that's what marketing does to people. It's already a completed product, it's fine without the toys. Actually, it's better. It's the same game for cheaper and you don't end up with crap you don't need but don't want to throw away.
But hey, the gamers end up with an ugly fake trophy on their shelf and the guys at LRG pop champagne bottles and snort cocaine off strippers with the money you throw at them.
@titotito3399 But why? Sometimes you need to dig deep into your soul. What is the void you're trying to fill? Those boxes don't bring you true happiness. As soon as you buy one, a new one is already announced.
@BigKing Have you considered though that maybe people actually like the stuff that is in the collection? For being things like concept art, posters, music, knick-knacks.
I wouldn't even say this is a marketing thing, not on the level of other big publishers. This really is just a case of "Hey we made a thing you might like", and people liking it and buying it.
To support this case, there's a collector's edition of Narcosis on the PS4, and it's not sold out yet.

Pre-orders for this opened on September 7th and there's been a lack of demand for it.
Honestly I think you've got some hang ups about people just enjoying stuff, because that's all I want out of Limited Run Games, to buy stuff I like.
What's there to like about a VHS tape or a golf ball? Why didn't you buy a golf ball before? Should all games come with golf balls and VHS tapes?
The whole company does nothing more than churning out collector's editions. Collector's editions used to be something special to celebrate something. Now it's just business and every indie game gets a run of the mill collectors edition. Bundle some crap, sell it for four times the original price.
Hell even the included items aren't anything original.
You know those were the first things they came up with.
**We need to make a collector's edition for a game about golf**
'How about we add a golf ball and a trophy and sell it for $80?'
It's about having neat merch that is relevant to the character of the game. You aren't getting Golf Story VHS tapes or Night Trap Golf Balls, that's just being facetious.
The things like the Trophy and the Membership Card are also meant to be styled after things in the game itself and may have significance to the fans of the game.
That's seriously all this is, neat extras to do with the game, anything like a statuette, plush, posters or novelty together with the game in a nice box, I see absolutely nothing wrong with this. That's the power of intellectual property, people enjoy them and want things to do with them.
@RupeeClock I have to agree.
I've bought three of their special editions and looking to buy this one. I bought the Saturday Morning RPG, Dust and Yooka Laylee one. Now granted a lot of the special editions out there are...less desirable. But every so often then make one that makes me go "well that's neat, I'll buy it!". I almost did that with Night Trap but the game isn't my thing.
I also know when Cosmic Star Heroine comes along I will be buying all the bells and whistles like that because I love that game. It's Sci-Fi Chrono Trigger.
Whenever it comes to a CE however I always sit down, work out the individual costs for the pieces and come to a conclusion. Sometimes I say yes and others I say "not worth it sadly". That way I feel happy knowing my money is well spent.
But then this is the point. I am buying them because they interest me and the Collector's Editions actually feel worth my money and special. And to me, I am happy paying that sort of money on it.
Yes, they may be expensive. Yes, I might be getting ripped off. But what company doesn't rip off their customers? All companies buy cheap materials to sell for a higher price. That's how business works.
And I am okay with that.
@Grandpa_Pixel It does seem as though Limited Run Games and also Fan Gamer put in the effort to make nice stuff for fans of these games.
According to their Twitter, this trophy is made out of wood and metal like a proper trophy, rather than sort of plastic job.
https://twitter.com/LimitedRunGames/status/1042590737001598976
The quality of the product makes it quite a nice piece really, reminds me of the Mario Kart 7 trophies you could get on Club Nintendo, but those were plastic.
I've given it some thought and I think in this case, I'll be happy to get just the game on its own without the collector's edition, leave it to someone who'll appreciate them even more than I would. I did get the Yooka Laylee collector's edition, was very lucky to actually with how quickly they sold out.
@RupeeClock I sat down and realized whatever Limited Run Games did to make that trophy happen, you could not do it on a better budget yourself. So I'm definitely going to pick this up. It's going to be a great piece on my shelf!
As for Yooka Laylee, I got my Collector's Edition as not only was it nice but it wrapped up a bad saga with Playtonic.
Originally I pledged over £400 for that N64 cartridge and Wii U physical. Then when there was no hope for a physical Switch version I got all my money refunded (it went towards the Monster Hunter amiibo and a nice break for me and my partner)
When they announced this edition I was absolutely thrilled as it meant not only did I save money but I finally get what I originally wanted all along. Even if it took years.
And I bought the SMRPG one because the action figures look kickass. As for Dust? Really wanted that game for SO LONG!
@BigKing I feel like I'm getting some therapy hehe. I hope you're licensed in your state and don't send me a bill at the end of this thread. It all started when I got an Atari when I was 3 yada yada yada... Now I buy all of LRG nintendo switch collector's editions. I love cartridges and big box art, LRG combined those two to my delighted surprise. For me, it's a no-brainer; especially when the games they pick speak to my inner child. The extra stuff in the box is just icing on the cake. Don't get me wrong I got plenty of voids that I'm trying to fill, just not with pretty boxes. They don't take much space, and let's leave that for another thread. I did have to adjust my budget around bimonthly LRG releases on top of Nintendo first party games.
I'll get the normal release of the game.
to expensive for me, might still check this out on a sale digitally at some point.
@BigKing I don't get your point... Isn't it all the same with consumer goods? Cars for example. You don't need a Ferrari, not a Mercedes. Still, people like it and that's good because they like it. Do they need it? Probably not. Do they like it? For sure! Is it any of your business? Hell no! And why? Because it's not yours to decide and that's great! And no-one will ever force you to buy any of this stuff
@mazzel I think BigKing cannot simply fathom that what is ugly and useless to him is a treasure to people who are into the gaming display scene. Yes, they are cartridges that may remain sealed and yes, they are pieces of graphic design plastic or paper just sitting in a shelf. Yes, they are physical VHS tapes of things seen on wi-fi. But the consumers are far from stupid: they know exactly what they are buying and what they are used for. The target audience of these companies are game fans, peope simply wanting physical copies (so their digital product isn't permanently inaccessible potentially), display junkies, and re-sellers taking their own risks. They know they won't sell a big bulk so they brand the "limited" name to get them moving.
As a business, they should be celebrating their success of this recently tapped market. And the consumers should be happy a few companies are still taking these kinds of risks! These are products that have value, beyond just a monetary one, to at least half of the buyers.
I think his basic argument can be applied to anyone wanting to buy a Ferrari or Mercedes. Over priced luxury vehicles, but with the cost of insurance or repairs, there are better options! So that makes their customers dumb for owning them? Noooope.
@Magrane Well said!
