Octopath

The lovingly crafted RPG Octopath Traveler has seen a tremendous level of success and huge waves of admiration from fans around the world since its launch last month. It perhaps comes as little surprise, then, that developer Square Enix has suggested that we can expect more, similar titles from the studio in the future.

The news comes from a financial results conference held earlier today in Japan, with Tokyo-based Wall Street Journal reporter Takashi Mochizuki sharing details from the event on social media. Square Enix noted that sales for the game had exceeded expectations - especially in the US and Europe - with a higher-than-average ratio of downloads versus retail sales. Of course, in Japan at least, the many stock shortages may have had some effect on that ratio.

Square Enix reportedly believes this surprising success to be thanks to a higher level of appreciation for JRPG games in recent years, game design that appeals to old fans of the studio, and new elements including the HD-2D graphics and attractive character designs. When asked about the possibility of more similar games in the future, no doubt thanks to this success, the reply was affirmative.

Interestingly, though, Square Enix noted that while Octopath Traveler is a Switch exclusive, future projects will be reassessed, with platform choices being made based on what is most appropriate for the individual titles. This makes sense, of course, but here's hoping that the Switch remains a big part of the company's plans going forward.
