The lovingly crafted RPG Octopath Traveler has seen a tremendous level of success and huge waves of admiration from fans around the world since its launch last month. It perhaps comes as little surprise, then, that developer Square Enix has suggested that we can expect more, similar titles from the studio in the future.
The news comes from a financial results conference held earlier today in Japan, with Tokyo-based Wall Street Journal reporter Takashi Mochizuki sharing details from the event on social media. Square Enix noted that sales for the game had exceeded expectations - especially in the US and Europe - with a higher-than-average ratio of downloads versus retail sales. Of course, in Japan at least, the many stock shortages may have had some effect on that ratio.
Square Enix reportedly believes this surprising success to be thanks to a higher level of appreciation for JRPG games in recent years, game design that appeals to old fans of the studio, and new elements including the HD-2D graphics and attractive character designs. When asked about the possibility of more similar games in the future, no doubt thanks to this success, the reply was affirmative.
Interestingly, though, Square Enix noted that while Octopath Traveler is a Switch exclusive, future projects will be reassessed, with platform choices being made based on what is most appropriate for the individual titles. This makes sense, of course, but here's hoping that the Switch remains a big part of the company's plans going forward.
Would you like to see more games like Octopath Traveler? A sequel perhaps? Let us know with a comment below.
Not too distant future I hope!
One thing I would like is a FF single player game where you can choose you're own class/character so I can roll the game as a gaggle of Summoners or Blue Mages
Bravely Switch coming any day now.
Well, that is splendid news. Hope we some some HD remasters along the way too
Dear SquareEnix, i want :
1. FF XII The Zodiac Age
2. FF X / X-2 HD
3. FF IX HD
4. Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5 HD
5. World of Final Fantasy
6. FF 3 & 4 HD (from IOs)
7. FF Tactics
For Nintendo Switch.
I'm so glad this game was a success, SE seems to have got the right message.
PS: How about a FFVI remake in Octopath style? Just throwing it out there.
What does similar titles mean? Lower budget RPGs? More games from that particular branch of the studio? More traditional(ish) RPGs? Sequels?
Didn't Square Enix say not too long ago they were going to create a team/studio to develop more Switch exclusives should this game sell well? I am a little concerned that future games may start missing the Switch in favour of the PS4 and/or PS5 etc.
Can't get enough of Octopath, never thought I'd say that about a JRPG. 30 hours in so far and absolutely loving it. Although I'm struggling to take down the mighty Morlock with my poorly thought out party. Should I fast travel back to Quarrycrest to change my party or grind in the manse until I feel equipped to deal with him. If I return to the village I'll still need to grind my way back to him anyway.
As for the article, I'm now interested in whatever they bring. So glad I've finally managed to find the game that's got me into the genre.
While I appreciate the art style, personally, a scanline/CRT filter would be nice. That’s how I played all the old pixel games. Seeing pixel games now without the scanlines isn’t as appealing to me. ¯(ツ)/¯
Just give me more Octopath games and Dragon Quest games (and get DQ on the Switch already dammit) and I'll be happy.
@FragRed basically another repeat article about what square already said. This just solidifies the idea. If the switch continues to sell well and 3rd party games sell well they will support the platform. I do believe at some point Nintendo will need to refresh the platform because there is so much magic that panic button can do.
Good news that it'll be fore everyone. Exclusives are a pain in the ass, really.
Hmm... how about a HD-2D remake of FF6? Even a 3D remake of FF6 would be nice. HD-2D remake of Seiken Densetsu 3, or just an original game HD-2D game would be fine.
I just want Final Fantasy 7, 8 and 9 on Switch please. Why is it that Final Fantasy 1-6 have all been ported to Playstation, but vice versa still hasn't happened yet? I wouldn't even care if they'd be straight ports of the Playstation versions, I just want them on my Switch. Please, PLEASE make it happen.
Oh, good. More gorgeous sprite work with lackluster storytelling, endless grinding and lengthy, uninteresting dialogue from a large group of characters whose tales never truly seem to intersect.
I was not a fan. Thanks for buying it to pieces, everyone.
@Xaessya Play the original Final Fantasy on the NES you start with 4 characters and you choose their roles from the start
HD-2D-itize Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana
Don’t know why people want remakes. I’d prefer new franchises or sequels.
I can see this coming to PS4 already then lol
So...more RPGs with bland dungeons, minimal town exploration, ugly graphics, and a passable story?
I'm with everyone on these comments though...give us FF9 HD and Zodiac Age.
Square: "Thanks for the money, Switch owners. We'll be using it to make more PS4 exclusives from now on."
I do tire in the modern day of publishers choosing the path of least resistance when selecting platforms. For any game that grosses well in the US that almost always translates to "Playstation first." While I understand that from a business perspective, we've arrived in this weird spot where with Sony and MS both just selling PCs publishers have their dream of basically one standard platform to simply distribute once and it makes a different type of platform like Switch always seem to have this uphill struggle. Once a game like Octopath proves viable, the publisher just looks to shoehorn it into their mainstream platform, and adopt the standard tropes of that platform. I own all three platforms, but please let me choose what platform I wish to play on. When I read this from S-E's perspective I hear "we're glad this franchise did well on Switch in NA, now we know we can make a bigger budget version for PSN for the sequel! I have a PS4. I have a PS4 Pro. I would not play this game on either.
@sleepinglion When it comes to S-E RPGs the bar set by modern FF isn't exactly high in those regards. Octopath is a big step forward in contrast.
There's always Dragon Quest....
Just got Octopath traveler yesterday but I am loving it. I love the 2.5D for rpgs now it is the most beautiful old school rpg type game I have ever played.
I fully expect that to be the case. I still have little reason to trust that Square is serious about the Switch.
I'm happy that the game is a success. The artstyle is too great to just do a one-and-done game. It deserves to be tweaked, added to, and evolve further. I would hope Square Enix includes the Switch in the future, since it was so good to them here, but these days you just never know.
I don't mind games being multi platform, but let's see some switch developed first therefore timed exclusives at least for switch.
Just because a Bruce Springsteen album sells well on vinyl doesn't mean it will do well on top 40 radio.
Just because Octopath does well on a handheld with a fanbase that appreciates retro style games, it doesn't mean it will do well on a console for 4K tvs that demands every game to be triple A.
With "similar games", do they mean, they are going the "cheap" way? 🙄
What about Dragon Quest? What about Kingdom Hearts? What about an Switch exclusive AAA-game?
You can't be Summoner or Blue Mage in that game :v
@OmegaDestroyer Japan is eating the Switch up, Square has no reason not to be serious about [the Switch].
@roboshort As someone who asked for a remake, it's because they're already promising new titles anyway. A remake would be a bonus.
@FragRed Totally, the PS5 will mess up 3rd party plans to support the Switch because of yet another gigantic power gap.
Perhaps. I am still leery.
I will concede that Square isn't nearly as awful as Capcom towards the Switch.
Hey Squaresoft, how about spending a few yen on an English translation of the Seiken Densetsu collection? Original SNES Mana though, not the remake.
I just hope they decide to bring Kingdom Hearts 3 to the Switch.
As long as they keep making Kingdom Heart 3, TR and big AAA Final fantasy/DQ for the rest of us - I am ok with these side projects.
It is like Zodiac Age. Sells a millions and they move on to bigger things. Their Gamescom line-up is amazing - exactly what I want SE to focus on.
im 30 hours into Octopath.. Im loving it
Yes more games like Octopath Traveler are welcome but c'mon Square Enix I'm still waiting for the localization of the Mana Collection and Dragon Quest Heroes 1 & 2. It shouldn't take that long to get DQH 1&2 here since both games had been translated already and the Mana Collection only needs part 3 translated (Seiken Densetsu 3), shouldn't even be that hard since it's just a collection of roms.
Octopath Traveler is a game that could have been released on the original PSP though - with tweaks. Give us beautiful AAA experiences like Xenoblade Chronicles 2 or Ys VIII.
@Classic-Gamer it still looks good.
But it is funny how some people say they need to play retro games with the pixels, when in fact they weren't pixelated on the tv's we used back then.
Yeah I figured if this sold well the sequel or whatever would be a multiplat.
This is exactly why I have an Ultrahdmi n64 and play my games on emulators using filters!
I'm not holding my breath on Dragon Quest for Switch any time soon.
@Classic-Gamer yeah when I got a modern tv with the switch last year I couldnt believe how bad my 64 and GC look on it. 64 in particular. Can't wait for the 64 classic with the CRT filter.
I still have my 27 inch CRT.
@Trajan well I’m sure the list of games on the classic will be gimped. Ultra hdmi is pretty sweet! I’m awaiting the brawler 64 controllers too!
Just bring a final fantasy 7 remake, just for cloud being in smash
And The World Ends With You releases in 2 months. 2 of the best JRPG Nintendo exclusive games back to back.
Keep em comin
FF Tactics on Switch would be a dream come true.
@Classic-Gamer oh for sure. But it'll be easy to load ROMs. N64 withiut the Rare games would be pointless. I'm sure the anti-rom guys would say its pointless due to the games, but that's easily fixed.
@OmegaDestroyer It will happen. Japan loves Dragon Quest, and they love the Switch and portable gaming. Square Enix would be leaving money on the table and not a petty pittance either. I would not be surprised if they are releasing the Switch version later so it does not impact PS4/3DS sales and the expectation that fans will double-dip to get the game for both platforms. This is Square Enix, and the Japanese market would riot if the Switch version does not happen. Final Fantasy XVI/FFVII:R is a different matter, but Dragon Quest will be on the Switch and probably not just DQXI either.
@Grumblevolcano I don't know. I still believe MS is going with the abolishment of generations, and we have no idea if Sony will blunder their "ultra powerful" 5 the way they blundered their "ultra powerful" 3. If we get an X1X-2 that's foreward compatible with the X1X and a PS5 that's a little above/below that, and games are still supporting current PCs, not much really changes with game design beyond where the max slider on the graphics settings can go.
@MrBlacky No publisher will do a Switch exclusive AAA game. Heck, no publisher is even doing Sony exclusive AAA game. The closest that came was Neir: Automata from S-E....and then it went to XBox and PC, and the devs even talked about wishing they could do Switch in enough time. AAA, costs way to much to limit its distribution to anything short of "everywhere possible." The trouble is when they also won't do single A and AA budget games as exclusives and determine everything must be AAA....and therefore determine that x86 hardware is the only viable outlet for that.
At least in the "streaming future" Nintendo may actually have an edge...why would buy a PS6-Streaming box when a Switch would stream identically?
What if they just release a collection or some of their old stuff too. How easy would that be? Duh Squarenix.
Another Bravely game please.
And please let us record videos on this software because screenshots do not do it justice.
Also I think it's a bit telling that Octopath takes place on just one continent, suggesting we might get sequels that take place in the same world, but other continents.
It's about time! Seems gamers finally sent them the right message.
So many possibilities! Surely we will get something final fantasy related soon ? I would love to see something like final fantasy tactics being released! Would be a perfect fit for the switch !
Now if only they could actually release Dragon Quests the same way and not years later or whenever they feel like it.
@NEStalgia Even with the PS3 mess, 3rd parties still supported that platform. Also if Microsoft does ditch generations, the only XB1 if any that'll play games from the next system will be the XB1X more than likely.
@Grumblevolcano Sony didn't relegate 3rd parties to 5 second strobe effect jumbles fired off a list of bullet points for promotion Plus it was technically the most powerful hardware even if it was impossible to port for.
Yeah, I imagine X1X + X1Y. Then 1X will drop off and it will be X1Y + XYZ etc. Sony said they were going to do the same thing back years ago, but I don't think they're going to do that anymore. MS has been all but saying that's the plan as recently as E3 week.
It's kind of a cool plan though. it either lets you buy in at bleeding edge, or always get budget pricing and still keep up with the games (and keeps the library carrying over....and no doubt they're more interested in selling MS Store than they are XBoxen.)
I was not into JRPGs but now I want to always have one to play Octopath is one of the best games I have ever played.
(can we get a reboot of crystal chronicles?)
Eh. I know I'm in the minority here, but I didn't think Octopath Traveler was all that great. In fact, I can't really think of any significant (new) titles from Square Enix in the last five years or so that I really enjoyed.
To be fair, I haven't exactly played anywhere near all of them - can't afford the games, especially not with other stuff I care more about releasing every so often. Still, I don't really trust the company with anything these days.
@OorWullie Glad you're enjoying the game! I've played so many of these types of games that so far this game seems easy to me. Could be the way I'm playing and getting everyone though but I dont think I've died once in close to 40 hours.
@Xaessya I like that idea!
@NEStalgia Octopath has some great ideas, most notably the combat system. It's aesthetic reminds me of 3D Dot Game Heroes, though the pixel work is gorgeous on Octo. I'd love a Chrono Trigger update with similar visuals, but I realize that's looking backwards. I struggled to get past its dialogue. It can make or break a game for me. Iconoclasts, by comparison, has developed and unique characters who help move the story along in a compelling way, for example.
Remake FF6 in this style and release on all platforms.
Fairly low budget. It would sell like 10 million copies.
So obvious an awesome idea that they definitely wont do it.
one problem I've had is too many game makers producing cheap and low quality games but insisting on bilking for as much money as they think they can charge, but i felt after borrowing the game for a week that it was so well done, even for a classical style, it was very much worth the $66 (after tax), I would also love to see a return of the total customizable party, not just classes, but a point system for stats like the table top D&D games or the old Ultima: Exodus & others like that
