Fans of Red Faction Guerrilla Re-Mars-tered have discovered a collection of Switch controller button icons inside the game, potentially suggesting that it could be on the way to Nintendo's console.
The game, which is a remaster of the 2009 third-person shooter title Red Faction Guerrilla, was released on Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One at the start of July. Considering the original was also released on Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 - Sony and Microsoft's current consoles at the time - it really wasn't surprising to see that the Switch wasn't included in its remaster line-up.
However, buried within the Windows version of the game are the icons seen below. These images are present in the game's files, along with an XML file which lists them all individually. The images and text files are reportedly in the same style as those on other platforms, despite a Switch version never being publically on the cards.
So, does this mean that a Switch version is on the way? Possibly. Of course, it's impossible to know for sure until an official announcement is made - the icons could simply be there as a kind of placeholder, just in case a Switch version ever did come about. This seems unlikely, however, as the extra work needed to create something that wouldn't definitely be used seems counter-productive.
The most likely scenario here is that either a Switch version is indeed in development, or it was at the very least discussed as a high possibility. All going well, we'll hear something about this from an official source in the coming months.
Until then, why not let us know if you think the game could be coming to Switch in the comments below? Would you like to explore Mars on the go?

I rather have Timesplitters tbh. but i'll take this too!
Haha, I've played that game before. My brother just kinda randomly rented it for our playstation or something. I don't remember much about it.
Edit: nvm, that was the original Red Faction on the PS2.
This had a pretty good online mode.
this right here is the system seller we have been waiting for. Guys go buy a switch if you haven't already, the moment they announce this one units are gonna fly of the shelves
Is this game well known? Because I've never heard of it...
No idea what for.
Nobody cared it came out in July on other consoles. Not even in the top 20 in the US for July. Nowhere in the UK and there is 113 people playing it on Steam 😂

Much as I love third party support, I really don't understand why Volition and THQ are so bent on trying to make Red Faction a thing. It was DoA and massively underwhelming in 2001, and it's gotten worse since then. It was never a thing. It's never going to be a thing. It has no focus and feels like "generic mars action game." Its whole claim to fame originally was the destructible environments that never delivered and has since been done better elsewhere.
Volition: Just buy back the rights to Summoner and Freespace, we all know they're dirt cheap from the Interplay auction lot, and make the games that you already know everyone wants you to make anyway!
I've only played the original, didn't know it even tried to be a franchise.
@Agramonte But at one magical moment, 1500 people were actually playing!
...1500 people who apparently own no other video games....
Isn't it just in case anyone was playing the with the Switch JoyCon on a PC? Those are compatible with Windows by default so... has anyone tried connecting theirs to their PC and playing this game with them? Maybe then the game shows the correct controller buttons in-game, but on the PC?
EDIT: Yeah what @BensonUii said above.
@NEStalgia Yeah, on launch day! They should get some sort of prize. That is some love.
WOW!... Summoner! That would be amazing on the GO.
This was one if my favorite PS3 games, but I didn't really want to replay it on PS4, and I can't really see myself wanting to on Switch either, even with the portability being a thing.
Here's the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRnn94RoluI
@NEStalgia Metacritic scores for the Red Faction games:
Red Faction (PS2): 88%
Red Faction II (PS2): 84%
Red Faction: Guerrilla (PS3): 85%
Red Faction: Armageddon (PS3): 71%
I've only played the first game on PS2 (which I enjoyed) but, other than the latest game, they have all got really good reviews, so they surely can't be that bad. Can they?
I actually really enjoyed this on 360 when it came out. The destructibility of buildings and such really made for neat strategies, I could definitely get into the vibe of a rebellion. For the right price, I might be willing to play it again. But if we're going back-catalogue THQ, can I have the first Homefront? That game was powerful fun.
And Godfather. I want Godfather back.
@BionicDodo It's one of those cases where the reviews aren't wrong, but don't tell the whole story. Critically there's nothing "wrong" with the games. They're not broken, the systems function as intended, it's pretty (enough) it handles well, it has some variety. Critically, objectively, sure, it's an 85%. It presents nothing to ding it on overall.
The problem is while it's clearly not bad it's also clearly not good. It's bland, empty, paint-by-the-numbers to meet the marketing checklist design. The story is never interesting, the characters never develop, the gameplay is the same shooting and blowing up/knocking down stuff, the environments are empty and bland and the whole ordeal feels generic and soulless, which is twice as sad coming from Volition, which is a studio consisting of some tremendously capable talent, and it all feels wasted on marketing checklists in Red Faction.
Each time one comes out they try to hype it, it releases...then it just kind of fades. This one's a remaster of the most hyped one of all...but it was so....bland and empty.
Just Cause took the whole concept but made a fun game out of what was otherwise notable mechanics.
Considering saints row 3 is getting a switch port this would not be outside the realm of possibility...
@NEStalgia I can't speak for these games specifically, but those things you mention should indeed count towards review scores. A game shouldn't get 88/100 based on not having huge design flaws or technical issues. A review score should include how interesting the world and characters are, the quality of storytelling and the variety in the gameplay. If a game can lack in all of those areas and score 8s and 9s then everyone is reviewing wrong!
Never tried it. I'd give it a go if it came to Switch
I'm just worried it'll be too much for the Switch to handle.
@BionicDodo Everyone's reviewing wrong. Most reviews for Guerilla cite the empty generic environments, bland undeveloped characters, thin story, iffy missions, horrendous driving mechanics, and repetitive gameplay but go on to cite that the blatant destruction is a fun and net it a good score.
The physics were indeed fun, but it falls down in a lot of the same ways Just Cause 3 fell down (almost a spiritual successor), in that it's kind of going to samey places doing samey things, without much of actual interest ever going on (JC3 still had much more story and far better characters, though.)
It certainly confirms that they have been considering a Switch release.
But from the dev on the floor toying around with the possibility of making something happen, there's a long road to the actualization of a release.
Either it's happening or these icons are for people who opt to use a Switch Pro Controller on the PC. That doesn't explain the inclusion of the Joy-Con D-pad though.
Hmmm... the Switch didn't exist when this game was in-development, maybe it was intend to come to the Wii U and never did. Those were Wii U controller pro buttons btw.
These we’re rec to me back when I had a 360 and I never ended up getting it so I think if it comes to switch I’ll give it a go
@Francema Here, allow me to help you with posting that video:
Well, seems like the critics, and @NEStalgia (heheheh... ) actually do have a point.
I never played any of them, after the original version, which I played on the GameCube, so I had a look around on YouTube, and I found this rather well-constructed, objective, but still quite critical video:
But that name, though... Re-Mars-tered, really?
Somebody, somewhere at a certain marketing or game name labeling department, definitely needs to be fired...
@Agramonte Better yet, Summoner Re-Mars-tered!
Even back in the day i though it was rubbish. It was very dull, very repetitive and boring as hell even with the destruction which got old in 10 minutes. That was the only thing going for it and other games released since them do that much better.
I would play this.
@Agramonte I care 😂
Steam actually does support the Switch Pro Controller by default if just connected via usb, I am using the controller for some Steam games regularly myself.
The controller Icons could be for that.
The only question is: Would they really make those icons just for the few gamers who actually play with a Switch Pro Controller on pc?
@cvrator well was thinking more of maybe a new one. It has been like 17 years - even SE does not take this long
@Mrbayram92 hopefully there is another 1,525 like you on Switch 🙂
@Agramonte I don't think it's realistic to believe this would do as well on Switch as on PC....
@Agramonte yeah, but then it won't be on Mars.
I guess I'm in the minority but I loved the first one. Played it on PC a lot and used to make maps for my LAN group. I got Gorilla on steam but the games for Windows integration crushed it back then.
I'm not sure exactly why I liked the first so much but at the time the environment destruction was really cool, especially in multiplayer. It's so out of left field I'd really consider a switch version of the latest.
dunkey's video is all I know about this game. Looks like a bit of fun actually

I would actually buy it to support the developer.
No interest what so ever.
This game was incredibly fun on PS3; smashing and driving your way through an open world sandbox, sure tge story wasn't anything special but it was an impressive technical showpiece.
You don't know the joy of driving a big truck through multiple buildings or detonating bridge supports until you've done it.
@cvrator @NEStalgia Speaking of

LOVED IT WHEN TRIED IT. Mix of just cause, infamous and a touch of... DESTRUCTION. Def can run it. Just downgrade the remaster. PS3 CAN RUN IT.
