@EVIL-C unless a gamer has been a bookworm since age 5 or so. In my case, games aren't even a guaranteed escape, considering that Switch has a pretty good reading app called Skyrim. XD (no kidding, to this day more than a third of my constant inventory load is books)

Drives home the reminder that Virtual Boy was the actual lowest-selling Nintendo console to date. And if we compare the total game libraries to boot... yeah, define failure.

After trying one out at a time cafe, even I still find myself considering a Wii U purchase now and then. Quite idly considering (and less so with every Switch port), but still. Of course, the biggest barrier, not counting the obvious limitations (you still need the console plugged in and GamePad charged), is that not all of the console's lineup is consistently Off-TV in the first place either. But FWIW, perhaps not unpredictably, the "Fisher Price toy controller" fan buzz has proven a fib as well - that thing is impressive for what it does.

Well, they've added other consoles too, so it's not necessarily a shot.

Poor WiiU. It's not a secondary punchline after the VirtualBoy. The funny thing is all the Switch ports of WiiU games actually reinforce just how many games the WiiU really did have....the library wasn't tiny, it just progressed slowly. I swear everything about that console that's bad exists more in people's heads than in reality.

Well since the Wii U is better than the Switch right now, its nice to see it appear in games. Hopefully we see more of the Wii U.

@NEStalgia I agree. It’s a shame people view it so low when in reality it was a great system. True it didn’t have a huge library, but what person is able to play all of the games of any console library? It still had plenty of games to play. The system wasn’t the greatest concept in the world but at least it didn’t get in the way of gaming most of the time, unlike the Wii remotes. And it produced some gems, like Splatoon, Breath of the Wild, Bayonetta 2, Mario 3D World, and DK Tropical Freeze, which IMHO are as good as the gems of previous Nintendo systems.

cute little find. Probably more done because more people will recognize it over a virtual boy too. WiiU was a nice idea, but the switch is the true actualization of its ambitions, the tech just wasn't quite there yet.

I can't be the only one who notices that 9-Volt is playing with an OG Model 2DS.

For the love of Pete, Nintendo... Please release a VR headset I can slide my Switch into and play emulated Virtual Boy games using the JoyCons.

A poor launch really hurt it. Tablet didn't seem innovative to the ipad market and the hardware was more expensive than the comparable PS3/360 at the time. Also the first 6 months didn't really have alot of compelling games. Nintendo wasn't able to change peoples mind after that first impression was out there. When you have a hot product like the Switch it almost seems to sell itself without new games. But the opposite is also true. The Wii U was cold and even when compelling games showed up it couldn't convince people the Wii U was worthwhile.

Having said that, I just bought a 2nd one. I feel like the Wii U was great from a historical perspective. It played so many systems via VC, played the Wii U/Wii libraries and could play Gamecube if you were willing to mod the Wii mode. All with a convenient HDMI out. It was almost a greatest hits console from Nintendo.
VC could have been better supported with more games and VC could have supported more third party systems like the Wii VC. But from my point of view the sheer breadth of what it can do is amazing. Now with the retro subscription and Nintendo seemingly giving up on VC for different models I don't think we'll see another system that similarly pays homage to their history.

I agree though. Part of it is that WiiU coincided with the end of Iwata's leadership as well. WiiU was his project. So is Switch but without his viewpoint guiding it it makes it more of a "normal console" rather than that weird Nintendo-like console in a lot of respects. Yamauchi and Iwata were lost during the WiiU which makes the two guiding forces since the Game & Watch absent starting with Switch. Miyamoto is the only thing keeping the ship on course....but Miyamoto's prone to exploring off course

Whatever. I love the Wii U and I still play mine to death. More so than my Switch even. Gotta mop up its backlog before I dive into Switch 100%. And it's telling that doing so is taking me so long.

Great library, awesome console with all its controller options / diversity. Only downsides are a relatively slow OS and certain apps no longer working 'cause Miiverse is killed.

A failure? Perhaps in sales, but to me not at all. Glad it's still getting easter egg puns like this one.
