Level-5 and GungHo Online Entertainment have just launched a Yo-Kai Watch game for iOS and Android smartphones in Japan.
Yo-Kai Watch World is a location-based title not entirely unlike Pokémon GO, where famous Yo-Kai characters appear "in the real world" around you. The objective is to fill your Yo-Kai Encyclopedia by visiting different locations and searching for signs of Yo-Kai activity. Using AR, your phone will display the Yo-Kai, at which point you'll enter a battle phase.
Battles are semi-automatic and are won using special moves; victory allows you to befriend the Yo-Kai, and you can then train them, which results in even stronger Yo-Kai appearing. The trailer also hints that raid battles - where players join forces to take down powerful foes - will also feature.
In an interesting twist, your Yo-Kai can "possess" nearby players and travel with them to new areas for a short time; this may result in them returning with new Yo-Kai or bonus items.
Finally, it's possible to plant "Yo-Kai Trees" at various locations in order to attract new Yo-Kai. This sounds a lot like using a Lure Module at a PokéStop in Pokémon GO. In fact, the more we look at it, the more this seems to be Pokémon GO with a different skin; perhaps when we eventually get to play it we will notice significant differences.
Speaking of which, Yo-Kai Watch World is only available in Japan at present. Would you like to see it come to the west? Let us know with a comment.

One problem is....
It uses JAPANESE Language.
So, Better practice to read & understand Hiragana & Katakana + Memorize the meaning of each words.
Well, I like Yo-Kai Watch, but I'm not too big on Pokémon GO, which looks pretty much the same as this. Plus it looks like it won't work outside of Japan, so it's not something I see myself playing.
I would like to see this, but unless YKW4 boosts interest, it's a dead franchise even in Japan now.
Meanwhile I'd like to see more of the anime translated. It used to be on TV here and was pretty funny. At least my daughter can now read subtitles, if I can find something online.
Already installed it but so far I'm not really sure what's going on in the game... I guess I'll need to go around and try to find something but it seems that in my area there are no yokai anywhere to be seen...
Just like with Pokemon GO, I'll probably play a couple of days and then forget about it...
They have expended A LOT of money doing that video... A big, popular actor and BUMP OF CHICKEN for the music...
It sure makes more sense than Pokemon Go and it's basically guaranteed to be done better on a technical level than Niantic's app.
Sorry, only have time to focus on one of these games, and it's gotta be Pokémon Go. Don't see this being as popular as Pokémon Go over here, which would make trying to get some of the stronger ones much more of a hassle with less people being involved.
So hey what about Yokai Watch 3 Level 5?
Ohhh....I just want Level-5 games on my Switch!!!
Where is Layton Katrielle? Where is Snack World? Yokai 4? Inazuma 11? Ni No Kuni?!!! Come on Level-5, you gotta be quicker!
@maruse I thought the same. Level-5 really has grown too big for their boots. They used to be a top notch, quality producer of video games, but they went down the Capcom route of seeking to become a Disney-like franchise manager and the quality of their output, Ni No Kuni aside, has really deteriorated as a result, as has their relevance.
Heck, I’d love to play this!
It’s too bad today marks day one of a ten week game break for me. 😂
I'm intrigued, but as I've pretty much quickly lost interest in Go, this will probably be a pass for me. Besides, I'd rather see news on a release date for Yo-kai Watch 3.
Even as a great, big'ol Yo-Kai Watch fan, I would rather have Yo-kai Watch 3 in the US already. If I'm too lazy to learn to read Japanese to enjoy Yo-Kai Watch 3, then I'm definitely too lazy to wander around town and beat up ghost critters and make them my friends.
Yes, want! Hope Yo-kai Watch isn’t dead in the West. If they do bring 3 here I’d prefer it in the Switch. Even if that means we miss 3 and go straight to 4.
It will never match Pokemon Go. Not even my students here in Japan care much about Yokai Watch anymore. Not even the elementary school kids. When I tried giving out Yokai Watch stickers alongside Pokemon and Dragon Ball and even generic animals and smiley faces, Yokai Watch was by far the least popular.
Discussion closed.......It is not playable outside of Japan
