Given its long and proud history, it goes without saying that Nintendo is sitting atop a mighty goldmine of IP, much of which lies dormant at the present moment in time.
One such sleeping series is Wave Race, which began life on the Game Boy back in 1992; it might not be one of the most popular franchises Nintendo has worked on, having just three entries, but its is nevertheless beloved by fans.
Speaking to Fandom at the BAFTAs, where Nintendo scooped three awards, General Manager of EPD Shinya Takahashi - who worked on both Wave Race 64 or Wave Race: Blue Storm - was asked about the possibility of Wave Race making a return.
He said:
You may see that game again. We have been trying to make many games and that may be one of them … I personally love Wave Race!
Back in 2016, Nintendo applied to renew the Wave Race trademark in Europe. Takahashi's comments suggest that we could see this series getting revived sooner rather than later - perhaps it will be one of Nintendo's announcements at E3? Or maybe he's talking about a re-release of Wave Race 64 or Wave Race: Blue Storm on Switch?

There is a god
He wouldn't just say that so it's happening .The only question is when.
What about an E3 reveal then August release? Then Smash to launchj along with the new online service in September. Those 2 would definitely help convince the masses they need to upgrade. We don't really know anything about what's coming in the 2nd half so it can't be ruled out 😁
I think people are reading too much into Takahashi's quotes (both Wave Race and the new console). He isn't a fluent English speaker (by a long stretch) and I suspect a lot is lost in translation. I hope I'm wrong.
I been waiting a long time finally some news about one of my favorite racers on the n64.
One good news hits the next. Wave Race and 1080 were my favorite sport games on N64 and GameCube. A new Ridge Racer and F-Zero and I'm satisfied.
Have fond memories of Wave Race 64, such a wonderful racing game, it definitely deserves reboot.
Wave Race on both N64 and Gamecube - both are excellent - remakes of either or a brand new game would be welcome. Most welcome.
Meanwhile F-Zero...
Move on to the next (Wave) Race...
Only played it on GameCube, and I’ve not been a diehard fan of Nintendo, however it’s a game I always remember and would love to see a return - really enjoyed it on GC
Lets not forget pilot wings. Amazing game on the 64. Bring back the cute characters and do away with the mii style ones from the 3ds version. Id love a remake of the 64 game!
Hope so - love that series
F-Zero X Wave Race coming December 2019, calling it.
@Kidfunkadelic83
Yes, please !
I'm pretty sure the IP would've been more successful if it had a proper roster of characters returning from iteration to iteration. Now I'm convinced the best move would be including Nintendo characters à la Mario Kart. (maybe along with them folks from '64)
Would love a new Wave Race. 64 was fantastic.
Oh my gosh yes, this needs to happen. I bet we would have seen more Wave Race and 1080 before now if NoJ hadn't screwed over NST.
Oh plz plz plz
Maximum power!
@Tibob thats a great idea to add some classic characters such as mario & friends as long as they keep the core gameplay true to the 64 version. I used to love the hand gliding and gyrocopter missions. Didnt like the jets they added in to the 3ds version tho.
Oh, Nintendo, you. Don't play with my feelings like that. I would love, love, LOVE to FINALLY be able to play a new Wave Race game. It's LONG overdue.
And I'd also second a new F-Zero, 1080 Snowboarding and Pilot Wings while you're at it, Nintendo...
@JamesR Seeing as Nintendo only ever makes use of professional translators, who also accompany anyone ever doing an interview, I can all but guarantee you that nothing has gotten "lost in translation"...
Having said that, even taking into account that the translation is on point, it is true that it still isn't ironclad proof of the game possibly being on the production list. But we should let the people have some hope. It's a positive thing...
And a simple alternative to a new game could of course also be an HD reboot of the GameCube game, so that could also be a possibility.
Is this game so good? I mean i had it for the n64 but i thought it was pretty boring
one of the first games I played on n64 and one of the first I owned on cube, cool series needs more love.
If they make a new one just please let it have lots of content, a lack of is the only thing I did not like about the other games.
will no doubt be built around motion controls
Wave Race, Pilotwings, F-Zero... I am a man of fine tastes yet Nintendo keeps not delivering. Heck, you could build all 3 of them using the Mario Kart 8 engine. And I would buy them all up day #1. Let us hope this is not just a passionate comment and actually becomes a game down the line.
Oh my god oh my god oh my god PLEASE bring Wave Race back! Such an underrated series.
@Tibob "Now I'm convinced the best move would be including Nintendo characters à la Mario Kart. (maybe along with them folks from '64"
I'd have to disagree. Mario gets his face plastered all over everything and I think it turns some people off. I think they'd be much better going with official sponsors (Kawasaki etc) and real-life or even just realistic-looking jet skiiers. That was half of the appeal for me in the older titles: Wave Race plays like a Nintendo game but it doesn't necessarily look like one.
@The_Mysteron This 100 times over - don't even think it need licenses - it was just a good game. Definitely doesn't need Mario... But yes real world jet ski stuff over Yoshi on one... add jet skis to Mario kart for that...
@Stocksy Agree with keeping Mario out of it. Though now I’m thinking about a full-on Mario Kart / Wave Race hybrid for Kart 9 and it sounds AMAZING
@Varkster you joke but the earliest showing of wave race 64 for the ‘Ultra 64’ was pretty much exactly that if I recall correctly.
@The_Mysteron Actually I was talking about Pilotwings.
Come ooon! Make it happen Ninty! F-Zero and Wave Race for 2019!
For anyone not exactly familiar with Shinya Takahashi this is a worthwhile read:

@gaga64 I liked Diddy Kong racing for the mixed vechile approach.... would approve of similar in MARIO kart
Another 64 game I'd love to see remade or HD'd would be Star Wars Pod Racer.
Loved that game.
Personally I would like another F-1 race game that was originally on NES but the gameboy version was cool
gamecube version is one of the finest racing games ever made. for the love of god nintendo make it happen
I would definitely take a new Wave Race game. I loved the one on N64.
I miss all those characters ☹️💔 come on Nintendo I need to see how Akari hayami is doing.
@Stocksy Me too, though I always hated the way the hovercraft handled. But the different vehicles and structure of adventure mode always made me prefer DKR over MK64 (whose tracks are too wide and empty for my liking).
Loved the N64 one and also Blue Storm on GC.
Pilotwings would be cool with motion controls, don't know why Nintendo haven't tried it yet.
Oh and while I'm at it, F-Zero too please
@Monkeyofthefunk
I love you
Didn't koizumi say that we were getting some games from non traditional nintendo franchises this year?
There is a god after all people!! I’m calling it, WaveRace X 1080 X ExciteBike cross over based on a new massive mountainous island. Then a Pilotwings expansion next year. (Bangs head on table with delirium)
Announce it at E3 and everyone will be happy. Or else.....

Whilst I loved Waverace, I cringed everytime the commentator said “Bouwie” instead of “buoy”
@Ensemen Wave race is much better than the 64 one. Wave race is ❤️❤️❤️
With a matching labo kit?
@Ensemen Yes it is, but of course that also depends upon your personal likes and preferences and your opinion.
Having said that, the GameCube version of Wave Race is still highly regarded today, for several reasons: accurate water and vehicle physics, realistic licenses and because of that realistic sounding engines, imaginative track design, and pretty competitive and smart AI opponents.
So, if you like jet ski games, then this should probably be on your list. I can understand you not being all that overwhelmed by the N64 version, although I myself enjoyed that version very much as well, and in that game too, the water physics still hold up well, even today, although it obviously looks pretty rough nowadays.
Here's some footage of the "normal circuit" of the GameCube version, to give you some idea of what an HD version of that could look like:
Had no idea about the Gameboy Wave Race game. Now I have to check that out.
@ThanosReXXX I really couldn't care less about how accuratr the physics and the surroundings are. As long as the gameplay is good.
But thanks a lot for the response!
it's just one of the only nintendo games i couldn't really get into. But judging from the comments on this thread i will have to give this game a second chance.
@Ensemen You're welcome.
And the gameplay IS good, not to worry...
As for me mentioning that accuracy bit: that was not so much to convince you, but more to explain why the series is so liked, by both arcade racing fans and people that are a bit more into sim racers.
At its core, Wave Race is an arcade racer, but it does have a Kawasaki license. Another interesting thing I forgot to mention, that actually COULD be interesting to you, is that it also has a free run mode, and two stunt modes, so after you've finished all the tracks in the three cups, there's still more than enough replay value in that.
So, if you still have a GameCube or a compatible Wii lying around, I can easily recommend this game to you, even today.
Wave Race 64 is still one of my favorite games of all-time. I'd love to get a new entry in the series but an HD remaster of 64 would be ok at this point also, the franchise has been dormant for too long. They brought Punch-Out!! back on the original Wii after a long hiatus, it's time for Wave Race to make a return.
@ThanosReXXX All right! Unforunately i don't have a functioning wii or gamecube. But if a new one realeses as rumoured i'll sure give it a try 😉
Thanks a lot!
Even a re-release would be awesome for me. I never got around to playing these games years ago. Would love that chance on my Switch!
@Ensemen Ah, I see. Well, so much for the official avenues then. That leaves you with softmodding a Wii U (if you have one) and installing Nintendont on it for GameCube support, or simply installing the Dolphin emulator on your PC. Both options obviously require you to find an ISO/disc image from the original game, but that isn't too hard with sites like Emuparadise and The ISO Zone around...
@Tibob "Actually I was talking about Pilotwings."
Oh, sorry dude. My mistake. 😊
While everyone waits for this, in the interim I strongly advise getting Riptide GP Renegade. Wave Race meets Road Rash by the Hydro Thunder team. And it's as good as that concept sounds. (BTW booted up last night and there was an update for the game. Not sure what for. Finally got partner to play multiplayer so possible related to that.)
Don't play with my emotions!!!!
Given Nintendo's recent track record with such statements, this almost feels like an official confirmation.
Tbh I don't get why there isn't already a new Wave Race. It's such a no-brainer!
Many have tried to copy it, but no Jetski game came even close to the gameplay of Wave Race.
OH MY GOODNESS! Please be true, I love this series!
Who else, back in 1997, thought the announcer on wr64 sounded like Mr Belding from saved by the bell?
Anyone?
Hello?
That game was awesome though. Skipped the gc one for some reason but would definitely get a switch version.
Waverace, 1080, F-Zero are the only ones we've really been waiting for since the GameCube generation. Way passed overdue for sequels or remakes of all of them.
I'd buy it!
Sounds to me, from that quote, like they have it as a prototype among several games the group is working on and it could get pushed forward to move into full development... not so much that it is in full development now.
I want this though. Love Wave Race. I do give 64 a slight edge game play wise, but really learning to take advantage of the waves is so much fun.
@Ensemen The gameplay is absolutely phenomenal.
This was my killer app on the GameCube. I LOVED the music and the graphics. The stunts were great. I want this more then a new F-Zero and thats saying something.
Wave Race 64 and Wave Race Blue Storm are two of my favourite racing games ever (ahead of any F-Zero game). They are awesome. I always wanted a new game in the franchise.
I would kill for Wave Race
Lol: Retro working on Wave race confirmed!
If that would be true, I don't know how to feel about that.
Great, look forward to racing against a dolphin, as in the good old days. As this is not the first time that a rumor evokes the development of a title to the Wave Race, hope that this is the good one.

Wave Race 64 is still so timeless, playing it now it's still just as fun, complex, and exciting as it ever was. Please, Nintendo, make another entry!!!
I definitely think it'll be a new entry and not a remake. They could make a new entry and still have all or some of the levels from 64 and Blue Storm, so in that sense, it can be remake-ish but still be a new entry.
