Detective Pikachu is one of the stranger spin-off games to arise from the Pokémon franchise, mixing a talking Pikachu with a Professor Layton-like mystery game style. It’s getting its own movie in the near future, and though the game may be old news in Japan, the impending launch in the West is a major game release for the still-kicking 3DS.
Detective Pikachu launches on 23rd March, so Nintendo has put out a trailer showing off what fans have to expect. Lots of story scenes are shown off, with a few bits of gameplay here and there, and plenty of other Pokémon make cameo appearances. It certainly looks to be a distinct game, and it’ll be interesting to see how it’s adapted to film.
What do you think? Will you be picking this up? What do you think the movie will be like? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Meh
The only problem I had with this is that Detective Pikachu is naked in the actual game. Should had kept him in the suit like the cover art.
Anyone else thought this was supposed to be the movie trailer?
Article title was a little misleading
Time to dust off the old 3ds, this one looks quite good
@FatAlbert1 Yep, thats what I was expecting!
I would actually like it if the Switch Pokémon game have this artstyle !
"Though the game may be old news in Japan, the impending launch in the West is a major game release for the still-kicking 3DS"
I'm fairly sure only Chapter 1 has been released in Japan, and that ended on a massive cliffhanger, so the full release will be just as major. Perhaps even more, given how long people have been waiting for the story to conclude!
@FatAlbert1 I can see why. But as the movie isn't releasing for well over a year, and they've only just started production. I knew it would be for the game as it's releasing in less than month
Pikachu sounds way to gruff and tough.
Still looks interesting to me as both a Pokemon and Layton fan. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for some reviews.
This could so be a Pixar-quality animation. Hopefully the upcoming film is up to that standard at least in terms of the visuals and animation quality.
This is so weird. Possibly in a good way though?
Yes, yes, yess!!!!
Personally I like the gruff-n-tuff Pikachu voice for this setting. It'd be weird in a lot of other situations, but it's neat here. Just wish the movie would do that.
I wish it'd come to the Switch
Visually, it looks like crap. What a waste to release this on an old handheld with obscenely outdated resolution. Why is this not releasing on Switch and then downsized for 3DS?
I guess the story could scrape by if Pikachu is dreaming he's a detective or something. I must admit I do like the little hints of 'film noir'. The gameplay itself could be interesting, but since it's not coming to Switch, I'll never know.
I like the part with Mimikyu.
The humans look a bit weird, like Kingdom Hearts princesses.
Going to pick up for my 9yo for a birthday present. He loves Pikachu and has recently gotten into the Professor Layton games, so it seems like a win.
This is so weird and amazing a can't believe one it is a game and two they have localized it. So excited the last game for the 3DS worth playing probably.
