2018 is going to be a huge year for Nintendo Switch - just look at the reveal of Nintendo Labo earlier in the week for a taster of that - and that includes the return of Link and the rest of The Legend Of Zelda gang as Hyrule Warriors returns for a second round of crowd-clearing brawling.
So to get you excited for the Switch-bound arrival Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition, publisher-cum-developer Koei Tecmo has released a brand new, action-packed trailer. Filled with a few snippets first glimpsed in last week's Ninendo Direct Mini, the trailer also comes filled to the seems with new footage. Considering this new edition combines content from both the 3DS and Wii U versions, even a trailer aimed at the Asian market is enough to keep our eyes secured firmly on its 24 March release date.
Are you planning to pick up Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition on Switch? Let us know in the comments below...

I needs it, but maybe later. Spent almost 200 hours on fire emblem warriors and I need a small break before I jump into the fray again.
Whoever did the directing for that video deserves a promotion.
Not feeling this. Looks a bit one note to me. I’ll wait for the reviews of this edition.
I hope they make some new content for it along the way.
Still have some hope to see the other champions (besides Daruk) joining this one... plus Kass of course.
I may at some point pick this game up but, I can't justify it at full price. I played the WiiU version a ton and loved it. I still haven't played FE Warriors and will probably pick it up first.
I want this so bad!! I wish they included outfits from BOTW! I'd love to tear through enemies wearing Barbarian Armor!
The Wii u is the console from the future. Great games
Until I have the ability to transfer my save from the wii u, I have no interest in buying this game again since I'll lose 200 hours of progress.
I played a bit of the Wii U version multiplayer with a friend but I've never owned my own copy of the game. Will this be the version to finally draw me in? Probably not but we'll see.
I played the original on Wii U and despite the fact that I used to be a big Muso fan, I haven't played FE Warriors nearly as much as I thought I would. I might get this eventually, but I'm not in a mad rush.
yes I need this!
I like Zelda as a subject matter more, but Fire Emblem Warriors is a superior game in terms of mechanics and overall polish.
The sheer amount of content in this game is going to be absolutely overwhelming. Can't wait!
„publisher--developer" 🤔
I didn't like Fire emblem warriors, so hopefully this might pull me in a bit more, and the adventure mode looks far more interesting than the modes in fire emblem warriors.
@setezerocinco wow, i just noticed that, that mistake is legendary
As long as they didn't fix the infinite rupee glitch and gives us the wind waker ganondorf costume, I will be happy.
Never thought i would triple dip, but hey gotta have it
I had this on the Wii U, but fell off of it near the last batch of Wii U DLC (the giant Cucco). The trailer made me excited for it though because of all the characters I missed out on from the 3DS version. However, I was really hoping for a Hyrule Warriors 2 that added BotW characters. The new costumes are nice but I would like to see the Champions or their descendants. Maybe we will get them as DLC? We did get ALBW DLC for the 3DS so I suppose it's possible.
@Biff_ARMStrong Well, they're adding both, the original hero gear for Link and princess Zelda's BOTW outfit so that's something!
Always hoped they'd include Wind Waker content in the original considering it's my favorite Zelda. And then they did in Legends but the 3DS just couldn't handle it and it negatively affected my experience. Some might say I should've just doenloaded the Legends characters to the WiiU version but I never bothered for whatever reason. Definitely picking this one up.
i hope they included both the Wii U and the 3DS versions of the story-line.
i have a slight dislike towards certain story-line changes that were made to the 3DS version even though it made certain levels easier to complete. on a few of the levels one of the changes made me want to quit playing the 3DS version of the game.
and maybe Nintendo will be nice and keep the infinite rupee glitch around even though i never used it.
and hopefully they will add some new story-line elements...
@TequilaUK Yeah I like that, but I never wear the Champions Tunic. lol. The Barbarian and Ancient Armor is my favorite
I'm confused by definitive. Didn't the 3DS game already have everything in the Wii U game?
I feel no need to double-dip with this one, but I recommend this game to any Switch owner who likes Zelda, the Musou/Warriors games, or just wants something fun to play.
It's 'filled to the seams' not 'seems'...
@Mando44646 Nope! Most notably boss mode was missing from the 3DS version, so no playing as Ganon or a giant Cucoo. Besides, this includes all DLC from both versions on disc, and is in higher resolution and framerate than the 3DS version. So a bunch of ways it qualifies.
@Mando44646 The Definitive Edition basically combines the two versions and packs in the DLC introduced with Legends.
@Mando44646 basically, plus The 3DS version was limited by the hardware in the amount of enemies that could be on screen at once, frame rate, draw distance, and of course texture res and visual effects.
@Shiryu
A two-player playthrough with Daruk and Darunia would be AMAZING.
Here's a question for those who have played it: Is the long play time (many saying hundreds of hours) attributed to "completionist" runs of beating the game with every character? And on that topic, is each character path essentially running through the same basic levels, or are there variations?
As a Zelda fan I'm curious about the game, I just don't know if I have the stamina to play the same content 30 different times.
Still uncertain whether or not I’ll get this. I never touched the Twilight and Termina maps as well as all of the DLC so there is plenty that I have yet to play, but at the same time I’ve already put over 80 into Legends and don’t necessarily feeling like investing the time to get back to where I was.
Dammit. I can’t get by the music. It ruins it for me. If it wasn’t for that awful, incessant guitar riff. It’s like having to listen to your neighbors’s baby crying while you’re trying to watch a movie. Distracting and annoying
@AlphaJaguar Agreed! I was thinking the same thing! Although, this game was a little too repetitive for my tastes. Still good in small doses though.
Cool, but I think I'll wait for the "Definitely the last one and even more definitive edition".
@RobotReptile There's four different modes to play through; story, free play, adventure mode and challenge mode.
Story mode is just the par-for-the-course stuff. You get one or more characters to choose from, predetermined per mission, to play through the story content with.
Free play is that, but now you can choose any character in the roster and can skip the storyline cutscenes as you please.
Challenge mode is just special challenges done while playing as characters you wouldn't normally get to play as, like Beast Ganon.[you still earn materials in these modes, making them GREAT for boss material grinding]
And Adventure Mode is a really unique mode where they send you into different maps with special rulesets and challenges for every square, using items earned by clearing stages to advance around.
Adventure Mode is where you'll be getting the majority of your unlocks for all of your characters. [weapons, new costumes, and general leveling]
It can get VERY TOUGH sometimes, though, so it's not something that grows tiresome very quickly.
@smashbrolink I will be happy with a skin for Darunia to pass as Daruk... we will see if the Nintendo Gods are listening...
Day one for me
@Mando44646
To add to what link3710 said:
The Wii U version also lacked some features that the 3DS version had.
Notably, the Fairy system and the ability to jump between characters mid-battle.
Will it be easier to gain levels like the 3ds version?
Only ever had the 3ds version, so I'm definitely in. Especially considering my 3ds got stolen with it in it. Only played maybe 5 hours of it. So yeah. Really excited to play the more gorgeous version.
Thanks for the detailed explanation! Sounds like more variety than I was expecting @smashbrolink
Invested way too much time in the Wii U version to go through all of this again. Plus I'm not paying €60 for old rope.
@Mando44646
No multiplayer.
@smashbrolink
The more egregious omission to me is the lack of the two Wind Waker maps and Linkle's tale. Nintendo could have added one or two Adventure maps that heavily featured those new levels (and allowed Wii U players to unlock the 3DS-only costumes), but instead we just got the characters. Yes, the characters are awesome, but the fact is that nearly every Adventure map requires a specific character to unlock some reward (heart piece/container, costume, or weapon), and the final batch of DLC characters are not featured at all, giving the player very little reason to use them.
Save data transfer please. I'd just love to resume not start all over again.
Will it be 60 fps at 1080p?
I'll definitely be skipping this. Not that much of a fan of the Zelda series plus I got the 3DS version. Besides I'm too stuck on how much Fire Emblem fit the Musou genre so well and felt so much better than Hyrule Warriors. It'd overall feel like a downgrade for me.
Having skipped the wii u I will gladly pick this up. Have been watching some old streams of it and looks like a lot of fun especially in multiplayer. With this and Donkey Kong being ported over there's only a couple wii u games left I want. Good on Nintendo for bringing these over!
Anyone happen to know if the Switch version of Hyrule Warriors allows you to switch between characters/locations mid-battle like you can in Fire Emblem Warriors and Hyrule Warriors Legends?
I don't know if i want to buy this game again unless you can transfer your 3ds saves to this version. Hyrule Warriors is a long and hard game to 100%
It's so good to see wii u games get a second chance.
I hope they’ll make all dlc stuff that was unlocked upon installing the dlc part of the unlocks in maps like the did with the original wiiU dlc in the 3ds version
@denpa-ben if I remember it right you can and they upped it from 2 to 4 characters.
Might be wrong though. If I’m than it’s still there but like the 3ds version.
It’s basically the 3ds version but with challange mode, 4 player local co-op instead of 2, 2 new costumes, 3d models for fairies instead of 2d art and all dlc included in the game.
Definitely gonna buy it as I’ve bern interested since the Wii U announcement, but the fact I’m rarely home means I never bought it as I wouldn’t have enjoyed it as much as it deserved.
I was tempted by Legends, but I only have an Old 3DS so that discouraged me from taking the plunge, meaning I never got to play it a the end of the day.
Fast forward to 2017, when the Switch was announced alongside some predictable Wii U ports, I was sooooooo hoping they would port this as well combining the two editions, and...well, they did! 😄
"Laying the smacketh down"
lol
Cant wait!!
@Biff_ARMStrong there's several BotW outfits!
You can play dressed as Tingle, a Phantom, oot Ganondorf, dark Link (and all the other Links), Midna, Zant, etc...
I had the 3DS version, but I didn't have a New 3DS so it ran like molasses. I've never really gotten into the Musou formula, but I think Zelda is exactly the franchise to get me into it. Really looking forward to this.
No, thanks! Already played the Wii U game. But, hey, go and have a fun time, newcomers!
Weird. So the Japanese title decided to incorporate the English title into it's third version.
In the West, we have:
Hyrule Warriors (Wii U)
Hyrule Warriors Legends (3DS)
Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition (Switch)
In Japan, they have:
Zelda Unrivalled (Wii U)
Zelda Unrivalled 3D: Hyrule's All-Stars (3DS)
Zelda Unrivalled: Hyrule Warriors DX (Switch)
I don't think I've seen them do that before, adopt the English language name for a remake.
Also, @SPG – there's no save-game transfer in part because the game's completely rebalanced and has different Adventure Mode challenges in different locations on the map. And it has story mode content that the Wii U version doesn't have, like Linkle's Quest and the Wind Waker afterlude.
@yeayeanaynay We have no reason to believe that there will be any major gameplay enhancements in the Switch version of Hyrule Warriors.
@marandahir Capcom played around with mixing western and Japanese names like that last year with Resident Evil, aka the “Biohazard” series in Japan. For the latest game, Capcom titled it “Biohazard 7: Resident Evil” in Japan, and “Resident Evil 7: Biohazard” in the west. Symmetry!
@thesilverbrick compared to the WiiU game it should at least be a world of difference in regards to balancing and polish.
The 3ds game already did a lot to fix the pacing of the game, it can only go up from there
@Meowpheel But in terms of gameplay enhancements, we’re looking at what is essentially the 3DS version with a fancy coat of HD paint. Fire a Emblem Warriors is still a superior and far more polished game overall.
@thesilverbrick who k ones, a bit if that FEW polish may rub on to it.
@thesilverbrick Undoubtedly Fire Emblem Warriors will be the superior game as Koei are quite good at improving & balancing game mechanics between games. Of course there is always the chance they've made some changes we don't know about. Fingers crossed.
My younger brother stole my Hyrule Warriors 3DS after only about 10hrs in so I'm all in on this release.
On a side note, from my experience Gundam Dynasty Warriors 2 is yet to be beaten in regards to the sheer amount of content & polish. Wish that'd get a Switch port.
@DanteSolablood @Meowpheel Don’t get me wrong; I loved Hyrule Warriors, and I feel like Zelda is better as source material than Fire Emblem, but inherently there are things about Fire Emblem Warriors that make it mechanically a better game, and these are things that won’t be included in any version of Hyrule Warriors. Things like pairing up units, the weapons triangle, class changing and support ranks only exist in Fire Emblem Warriors for obvious reasons. It’ll be hard to go backwards.
@thesilverbrick Oh well those more like, personal preference things. Both games have things unique to them, and that makes them interesting.
For example Hyrule Warriors has many giant bosses, assist fairies with amazing powers, secondary weapons, a very large quantity of unique mission objectives and types, elemental match ups, and unique movesets for every character.
It's the little differences.
@yeayeanaynay Every Wii U port to date has had minimal additions. Mario Kart 8, Pokken, Rayman, etc. have all been essentially the same game we played on Wii U with minimal enhancements. Until they announce any major additions, it’s entirely safe to expect Hyrule Warriors to be a prettier version of the 3DS game. We have zero reason to believe otherwise. Until you can provide proof to the contrary, you’re just guessing as well. But unlike your guess, mine actually lines up with everything we’ve seen so far.
@Meowpheel Sure, I see where you’re coming from. I hadn’t really considered it before, but you’re absolutely right; there are a few things that did make Hyrule Warriors unique. I did love Hyrule Warriors, but I feel the inherent Fire Emblem mechanics lent themselves to a more compelling Warriors hybrid experience. Perhaps it’s apples and oranges, but I definitely preferred the Fire Emblem variant, even though Zelda is my series of preference. That alone says something about the execution of each title. That said, I look forward to revisiting Hyrule Warriors with a fresh outlook.
@Reignmaker I believe in the Nintendo Direct Mini they said it would be "playable in up to 1080p". I take this to mean it will be like Fire Emblem Warriors. I would expect that you can choose performance mode for 720p 60fps or a quality mode at 1080p 30fps. My guess is that like other Switch titles it will use a dynamic scaler and so visuals may go down to 900p in certain instances, but it should be a very solid 30fps or 60fps.
That said, I have this on both Wii U and 3DS (with all DLC) and so I will definitely be buying this again day one on Switch.
Will end up succumbing to this on discount. Loved wiiu and 3ds versions.
FE didn't seem to grab me same way unfortunately.
@RobotReptile The main game, the story mode, can be completed in around ten hours. Some stages you will have up to four characters at a time that you can switch between on the go. I found the stages themselves to be quite varied, with different types of terrain and environmental hazards. All the stages are from various Zelda games so that's cool if your a Zelda fan.
There's a lot of collecting and powering up in the game if you want to and that can be quite addicting, hence why some gamers can rack up hundreds of hours of play time.
@Dom As a Rock fan, I proudly approve the subheader
Why can't Nintendo implement this fighting mechanics into BotW? It will make killing those camping goons so much quicker.
Good info—cheers! @Nomad
Yes and yes and yes this looks amazing, I never got around to getting the 3DS game which had some exclusive content as did Wii U version, this game will have soooo much content which is fantastic as its such a great title cant wait.
After I got FE Warriors I am really over these Warriors games. I got Hyrule Warriors on my Wii U and never really got that into it, it's just okay.
@JayJ Hyrule Warriors on the WiiU is easily the worst version of the game.
Except maybe for Legends when played on a regular 3ds.
@Meowpheel It costs $120 to buy the Wii U game and unlock everything, including the Spinner, the extra costumes, the Legends characters/weapons, and all the other DLC. I think I'd rather play the game running at 20fps to get all that for $55.
@KayFiOS well I did say "maybe" heh
@Prof_Yoshtonics that's because you've played it. There are still a lot of people who didn't get the WII U version since that console sold bad. So why not re-releasing and ask full price for it? That's business
@Meowpheel For me one of the problems I had with Hyrule Warriors is how the Zelda universe just doesn't seem to fit the Warriors games nearly as well as the Fire Emblem universe. It is why I could get into FE Warriors a lot more.
@JayJ well, it was my first Warriors game so I didn't have any kind of expectation of what fit the genre or not.
@Kalmaro You got 200 hours out of it?!
@Salmonite17 Absolutely! There's a lot of stuff to do if you're trying to beat every level with best ranks, collect all items from the shop, beat all levels with max rank, complete extra levels, max fighters, etc.
Plus, it has a lot of content.
@Kalmaro You had to make my choice between FE: Warriors and Hyrule Definitive Edition harder didn't you? lol Just kidding, but it does make me consider it more.
@Salmonite17 Both are good. Hyrule warriors is more of a one man army kind of thing. Fire Emblem warriors is more strategic in that you have to choose carefully who you send where. The weapon triangle really matters.
@Kalmaro Duly noted. Thanks.
