Following speculation that it would be remastering one of the best open-world driving games ever made, EA has confirmed that Burnout Paradise HD Remaster (that's a tentative title currently) will hit PlayStation 4 in Japan on March 16th, costing 4,104 Yen.
Given the Xbox One's dire standing in Japan, it would seem that EA only has plans to release the game physically on PS4 in that region - but we'd imagine it will come to both consoles elsewhere in the world.
It's also worth pondering where this leaves the Switch version of the game, which was mentioned in those Brazilian rumours. EA is one of the companies Nintendo cites as offering third-party support for the console in 2018, so perhaps we'll see Burnout Paradise confirmed at the (rumoured) Nintendo Direct we're (hopefully) getting this month?

Wait for the direct, if they don't announce it there.
It's not coming to Switch
I hope we get it on Switch because that is the only console I have any interest in buying this game again on. It seems kinda pointless for me to get it on a PS4, I had the game on PS3, played it lot, and I imagine the PS4 will be the same experience only better looking. I would much rather have it on a portable, it seems like it would be the perfect kind of racing game for the Switch.
I'd take a Burnout over a Forza / Gran Turismo any day of the week.
Too much counting on something, not enough hard facts.
@GrailUK I gotta disagree there. Gran Turismo for the PSP was one of the best portable racing games I ever played, and I can put hundreds of hours into Forza games, but there is no way those games will come to the Switch so it's kinda pointless to even mention them.
I'm concerned about this, and the likes of GTA on a console without the appropriate triggers. How would you gauge your acceleration?
I think this will be for Switch too as its a last gen game port.
EA hinted at more Switch support in 2018 too.
Let's not forget that Criterion went far on the Wii U version of NFS Most Wanted.
@SanderEvers Exactly my thought when i saw this
It's been a while since I played Burnout Paradise, but aren't analog triggers somewhat core to the gameplay?
I would love a burnout 3 HD make over.
Not interested if this becomes micro transaction paradise
It is interesting that EA would announce this for the PS4 in Japan and not the rest of the world, even if it is coming to the West. Maybe that is because they are waiting for the Nintendo Direct before officially announcing it.
@Gerald : There are no micro transactions in heaven.
@JayJ Hey! Different strokes for different folks mate. I would have thought the absence of analogue triggers would be a constraint for racing sims.
Generally I'm not a sports sim fan, and I don't follow football either, so FIFA has never been the game for me... Burnout Paradise though, now you've got my attention!
Would be nice if it does come to Switch. Be nice to have a proper driving game such as this one.
I love Mario Kart as much as the next person but sometimes its nice to race without the fear of a red shell up the back passage
@sillygostly Wait...you can't buy Leaf Ticket's in heaven??!
My bet it that is won't be released on the Switch, well, at least not in March with the PS4.
From what the EA exec said last year, they would wait and see the Switch sales after one year so I don't expect them to release anything before that.
However, because we had the Brazilian website rumour, it might be that it will be release at some point towards the middle of the year?
@NaviAndMii : I thought "ask and you shall receive" was part of the whole novelty of heaven, but I suppose you could wish for capitalism too...?
Nice! I was just thinking yesterday that is would be cool to play a Burnout game on my tv. I only ever owned these games for PSP. If it's not coming to Switch I'll get it on PS4. Now if it is coming to Switch... I'm not sure yet
Nintendo needs to hurry up with this Direct, it's 2018 already.
I'm kind of sad that this isn't a Burnout 3: Takedown remaster. Paradise was good, but I think that Takedown was the very epitome of arcade racing, and the Crash Junctions were just superb. The Paradise equivalent of Showtime felt lacking, somehow.
I would love burnout 3 instead. I was playing crashes once and the other person was ranked no one. Not no one in the world but the person in who has played it most online in the world. I bet him on one of seven crashes which ain't bad if he/she had played it online more than any other person lol.
I'd love a Burnout or Ridge Racer game for Switch. In those games my driving style is usually: pedal to the metal, let go of accelerator and hit break, drift, pedal to the metal, repeat. The lack of an analogue trigger would probably not be too much of an issue. Racing sims are another thing.
As a side note, I do find it quite funny that 720P games from the PS3/360 era keep getting released on PS4/Xbone with 'HD' in their title as if they were in SD before.
I'd kill for a HD remaster of 'Burnouts 2 - 4' from the PS2. All great games in their own right (and yes takedown is the best). Arcade perfection, that you just don't get anymore on any console nowadays. Look at the current crop of arcade driving games on the PS4, compared to the PS3, Pitiful.
@BionicDodo You want a real laugh?
The HD Remasters for FFX/X2 and the Kingdom Hearts games were indeed HD Remasters of the SD originals.
Those HD Remasters got HDer Remasters not long later.
Like The Last Of Us HDer Edition.
Probably why Nintendo has gone with "Deluxe/DX" for Wii U rereleases. They are already HD so...its a bit sumb. Now SD games tbey did label as HD.
Please, please, PLEASE make this happen! I don't even mind paying full price to have this one on he Switch. EA, be smart about this.
@sillygostly unfortunately 'ea' is in heaven 😜
@YummyHappyPills I like that, let's go with:
Burnout Paradise HDer Edition.
@Gerald : You can't spell "heathen" without "EA".
Burnout 2 or 3. Not that tempted with paradise too much. If they were to release a special analogue trigger JoyCon pack in with Paradise then I’d be all over that.
MAybe the “imminent” direct will announce GC HD remaster VC and special purple/black JoyCons with analogue triggers. Hello, yes please!!
Where is this direct!
It was rated for Switch elsewhere, it's an existing thing overall - seems like the rest is a matter of announcement and release date indeed.
@sillygostly you can't spell "greatness" without EA either. Orthography rarely takes sides in mutually petty interest wars between consumers and corporations. XD
"Burnout Paradise HD Remaster Confirmed For PS4, But Where Does That Leave Switch?"
Stuck back at the starting line in a Prius with a flat battery. Unless all these surprises are being gathered to be revealed at next week's Direct.
Already own the game on Steam.
Already own the game on Xbox One X with BC.
If it came to Switch, I'd buy it. Otherwise I have little interest and no reason to care.
@YummyHappyPills That's not completely true.
Yes, Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMix and Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMix were ported to PS4 in the same package, but that's it. It's simply a port to a current platform, not "HDer" remaster or something. It was simply called Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5+2.5 ReMix.
I think it's great that games are brought to as many platforms as possible. That way as many people as possible are able to play those games.
does this play like the takedown games? might grudgingly give EA a few pound if it does, stupidly fun game
I don't really care for Paradise. I'll take any of the previous Burnout games over it to be quite honest. My 360 running the previous two entries is still hooked up, so on a personal level, I'm just like ... whatever.
But as always, more games are welcome, so why not make a Switch version? The game is ancient, so it should not be that much of an issue to port it, assuming there are not additional factors at play, we are not aware of.
@SanderEvers Nintendo has said that EA (along with many other 3rd parties) has games coming to the Switch this year. We know of Fe, but if anything else was to come a remaster/port of a game would probably be the most likely as it has the lowest development costs.
Given how well EA games sell on Switch I doubt it...
I'll be getting it on PS4 once it drops down to £10. Given how quickly prices drop on the overcrowded PS store it shouldn't take too long.
I really need to stop buying Remasters 😑.
This will be the last one!
@Archius9 Exactly. Lack of analog triggers prevents any more simulation oriented driving games from coming to Switch unfortunately. Overall I love the Switch but that's one limitation I think is too bad.
@bilboa exactly. It’s nothing a new version of joy cons couldn’t add. However that means new £65-70 joy cons. Bundle it with GC VC and I might be keen.
What's the point of an HD remaster of an HD game? Nevermind; it's a pretty fun game. I picked it up for under £3 on Steam.
WiiU had more EA titles in the same timeframe...
I'll get that, loved Burnout. I think the last one I played was on the 360.
@nhSnork : Touché.
They do have quite a lot of great IPs though, which makes it all the more aggravating when they run their best franchises into the ground (The Sims being the one that stung most as I bought every Sims game for every platform I owned at one point, and now I pay no attention to the franchise).
With that said, I would jump at The Sims 4 on Switch, however I dread the idea of purchasing expansions that are console locked. I would prefer an annual physical release with new content (even if the bulk of the content is identical to the last game) over console-locked expansions that are not available via physical media.
I still play The Sims and The Sims 2 after all these years and I have all of the expansions on disc, but what of The Sims 4 on Switch?
Il say wait for the direct too I see no reason why EA wouldn't give us the Burnout hd remaster. lets hope 2018 is another exciting year for Nintendo.
@KoopaTheGamer
Kingdom hearts 1.5 & 2.5 would be a dream come true if it came to the switch.
This game won’t work on Switch. No car racing game will. Sorry, folks. The lack of pressure-sensitive shoulder buttons ensures Switch won’t see these games. Nintendo chose to take this route, and any and all car racing games, should any appear on the Switch, will be worse on the console.
3....2...."Here at EA we really like to look at each product and see on which hardware it fits the best. With Burnout Paradise HD Remaster we felt the right audience would be on XBox One in Japan. Switch has significant support in Japan, with a huge library of games to choose from, so we felt XBox One, with it's six or seven hundred customers with only four or five games to choose from would be the perfect audience to capture with this title. We have a great relationship with Nintendo, and, while we can't say anything specific at this time, we can say that we think Switch fans that enjoyed FIFA 18 and want a game that features the number "19" sometime in the next year have a lot to look forward to from EA in the coming year!"
If EA really wants money from the Japanese crowd, they would be dumb not releasing this on Switch. Like Capcom they would be missing out on those 200K customers.
@NEStalgia Lololololololololololo...
It's being remastered to include micro transactions
Pretty confident this'll happen. A cheap remaster with low risk will tempted EA.
@BornInNorway81 "This game won’t work on Switch. No car racing game will. Sorry, folks. The lack of pressure-sensitive shoulder buttons ensures Switch won’t see these games."
Burnout games aren't exactly simulators, bud. You can play any Burnout game with a gamepad or even a keyboard without the slightlest of hitches.
@BornInNorway81 car racing games have been on hardware without analogue triggers for long enough that such ultimate statements across the net give off the vibe of someone being just spoiled by said triggers. It's like gyro aiming in shooters - likely more convenient for sure, but suddenly unplayable otherwise? Hardly. I've finished several NFS titles across PSP, DS, Vita and, back in the day, PC (with a cheap third party controller which had no triggers, just two pairs of shoulder buttons), and I've recently tried GT Sport demo with the mercifully provided face button control scheme as well - all of them have controlled comfortably and without issues. So did what I've played of Gran Turismo on PSP, for that matter.
If we're talking personal preferences, then yes, it may be "worse" - but on the general scale, my experience tells me the degree of that "worse" is highly exaggerated. And Switch already has a bunch of arcade racers (Fast RMX, Gear Club, Redout... even MK8D - does it control so much "worse" than Double Dash once did with GC's proper triggers?); Burnout Paradise should fare on it about as well as NFS Most Wanted, a heavily inspired game from what I hear, did on Vita.
Those valuing portability will pick Switch version for sure - the analogue goodness of Dualshock triggers is very pointless when Vita's remote play keeps mapping them to rear touchpad by default.
I could definitely see this coming to Switch
Good news but wish it was Burnout 2!
Take me back to the Paradise City, where the grass is green and the gals are 4K pretty... XD
@electrolite77 And it shuts us Burnout fans up for awhile... T.T
Gotta have pressure-sensitive buttons!
Nintendo is so old and ancient I wish they go third-party already.
@BornInNorway81
Don't hold your breath fella
Ain't gonna happen
Switch continues outselling production to the tune of massive profits. I sure wish I could be old an ancient like that!
Pressure sensitive buttons are so overhyped. The range of motion is so tiny with such little range of meaningful resistance I find it hard to get meaningful differences from any analog trigger. NGC/Wavebird had a fairly usable analog...but Xbox and PS controller analogs just aren't very useful, your finger can't really feather it well anyway. For external HOTAS/Pedals etc it's one thing...but on controllers....meh.
sigh Okay, tell you what. Burnout Paradise may be, in my opinion, the worst of the Burnout series, but add in some local multiplayer and I will buy it day one. I might just buy it anyway to show support for the series I dearly love, even if this was my least favorite game from it. Its like when I bought Star Fox Command. Twice. I hate it, but I show my support.
I'm pretty sure this game isn't coming to the Switch.
I love Burnout - just not Paradise, though, it’s the worst of the bunch IMO
That would be a sweet addition to the Switch library- great game and Switch needs racers!!
burnout 3 was the last good one.
i have paradise on the ps3 and didn't care for it near as much as the 'pick a place on the map and go' games. i hated the open world (why does EVERYTHING have to be open world??).
now the multiplayer was hilarious in paradise. just a destruction derby basically. racing? what's racing?
i'd wish they'd bring the old versions over. maybe 1-3 in a compilation format upscaled for the switch. they'd run great and are really fun.
first one i had on the GC and i played that thing rotten. the saloon was a boss.
It is very sad, that today we don't really have many new arcade racers (except Mario Kart) as we had in the past.
I don't play simulations.
Probably my least favorite burnout game yay!!!
I would love to see this game as well as a Need for Speed game for the Swtich.
meh, whatever. I don't think this was a very good game, all I remember from it was constantly looking at the minimap in the corner to figure out where to go. But, I'd totally be in for Burnout 3: Takedown, now that game was great.
@BornInNorway81 Seriously? thats nuts! I’ve played Burnout Paradise for years on PC without analog triggers and it plays perfectly! with this type of game you benefit from being able to go between full and zero acceleration quicker... do you have a need to drive slower? I have yet to play any racing game that made me wish I had analog triggers, they were useless on Gamecube.
Screw EA
@Archius9 How would you gauge your acceleration? Like you do in thousands of car racing games on platforms without analog triggers: by simulating.
