Hamster is giving the ACA Neo Geo series a 2017 sendoff with none other than The King of Fighters '96 hitting Nintendo Switch on 28th December. The third entry in SNK lead fighting series saw some major improvements, namely the ability to fake smaller jumps, a perfect way to trick your opponents and avoid committing your fighter to a precarious situation.
Also, for the first time you are also able to power up by holding A+B+C, enabling you to make the most of any downtime to charge up your POW bar and unleash one of your deadly super moves without the need to have your health in the red. And that's not all, because TKOF'96 introduced the dodge roll before it was cool! A retro trend setter, indeed.
As per annual tradition, the roster got shifted about, removing a few characters while adding fresh faces to the mix. With Rugal gone, it's up to the new (and slightly too powerful for comfort) new boss team composed of Geese Howard, Wolfgang Krauser and Mr. Big to take up the slack for evil doers everywhere. Oh, and this was the entry where Heidern substitute - and long time series fan favorite - Leona joined Ralph and Clark on the Ikari Team.
Were you a fan of TKOF back in the day? Or are you discovering this awesome series on Switch for the first time? VIOLENT POSTING TO COME AGAIN in the comments section below.

...and before anyone begins commenting on my poor performance on the gameplay video: This is the first time in decades I am playing the game with an arcade stick (the lovely 8bitdo N30 Arcade Stick). I can now clearly see what years and years of playing these games with joypads turned me into a bad stick player. But all in due time and practice...
I love that the Switch is a haven for fighting games....(didn't expect to ever say that).
We now declare the opening ou special team tournament
AGAIN...
IN TWENTY SEVENTEEN!
Ohhh, back in the day I was just astonished by the game that made me into KOF series to never forget it...
AGAIN
IN NINETEEN NINETY SIX!
The artwork, the music, the gameplay, all aged well (in a thrown back sense) and it was the best an old-school game could offer - and still is, IMO, the standard when we think about pixel art and other old-school things.
This was the one chapter in the series that turned me into a true KOF fan. 98 may give you the definitive roster, but this one added all the mechanics that made this stand out from everything else in the arcades at the time.
I really like 96, so yeah, I’m picking it up.
This looks like a very solid fighter to me. And there's some great sprite art going on here.
KOF 96 may not be the best entry in the series, but it’s the one that has the strongest nostalgic factor on me, might grab it.
I always heard good things about KOF 96. Looks great. I got into the series with the next game, KOF 97, after seeing it in the arcade. I love the sprite work in these.
So this and Double Dragon are coming out in the same week. Count me in!!!!
Great, fantastic!!! Just what we need!! another Neo Geo Fighting game....it's not like we nearly have a decade worth of them...
Here's a idea, why add some Turbo Gfx/Pc Engine games? maybe some Konami arcade titles? like Sunset riders?
@ClassSonicSatAm Sunset Riders would be awesome. Might be too much of a stretch to get TMNT, The Simpsons and X-Men as well, but if we don't ask we won't get!
It's the best entry in the serie, especially for the soundtrack and those backgrounds that are perfect. Roster is very good and bosses are excellent, also difficulty level is perfect, until you end with one of those bosses (Chizuru if I remeber correctly). I'm in.
Personally, I'd really like to see KoF XIII on the Switch....gaaahhh!!! Ever since the iOS version of that game fell short of the mark, I've always wanted it on-the-go.
I'm in.
I wish they would release these in order! Fatal Fury 3, my personal favorite, has yet to see a release on switch nor has haunted castle!
The Nintendo Switch is officially the home for NeoGeo arcade games both at home and on the go, now I'm glad that I never bought into this piece of crap:
AKA Super King of Fighters Turbo
@retro_player_22 In truth the Switch is just a better executed (in every possible way) Neo-Geo X
Awesome, my favourite entry!
sengoku 2 coming soon!
@retro_player_22 Yeah that is basically now just a ghetto version of the Switch without any of the great high-tech features or capabilities.
