Up to now the Nintendo Switch has, we think it's fair to say, had a strong start and earned a positive reputation with the public. Marketing has been interesting as a result, with Nintendo able to move on from the "what is it?" phase that made promoting Wii U so tough (and the 3DS, initially), and focus on the concept and lifestyle of the console.
Nintendo of America, in particular, has been keen to emphasize social competitive gaming and the idea of friends playing in various ways; it even opened its E3 Spotlight with that concept. Now there's a TV commercial showing lots of photogenic millennials doing that with Splatoon 2; as an aspirational ad it seems to do a good job.
There's also a nice episode of Nintendo Minute in which the presenting duo interview producer Mr. Nogami.
Are you excited about Splatoon 2 later this month?

If I buy the game, will I too be hip and happenin'?
edit: I just noticed now that Kit and Krysta both have wedding bands. I always assumed they were banging.
Nintendo Minute - SMH I've made my feelings clear about those before. Cringe! Will never watch them again.
Bet I'm not the only person who reads "Nintendo ramps up..." and immediately has their brain imagine "Switch production" as the next 2 words.
You know I never saw any of those photogenic millennials playing 1-2-Switch in a bar or in the park. Damn them for shattering Nintendo's dreams.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Totally agree! I think that Nintendo's Directs can be good - the Treehouse too...but, as you say, Minute is just pure cringe!
I miss "you're a kid now you're a squid now"
@NaviAndMii Agreed.
If i had a dollar for every time I've seen someone with a switch out in public, I'd have -2 dollars. I say negative because I have seen two people playing on Vitas
That setup in the Splatoon 2 video isn't far from what happens at the game club where I teach. We'll see if they adopt Switch this Fall or not. It might take Smash to do it.
Can't wait for the game to release!
Hopefully there will be another Global Testfire (missed the first one) to bridge the gap untill July 21st...
@Aurumonado
Basically what I was about to comment
Hopefully Splatoon 2 encourages Nintendo to Switch on those machines in the manufacturing department.
I can't help but think of Scrooge reluctantly dipping his fingers into his purse when it comes to Nintendo investing in their own stock and interests.
Tuppence is tuppence!
@SLIGEACH_EIRE You certainly have made your feelings clear. You say literally the same thing in every post relating to Nintendo Minute. I think we know how you feel.
Hmm a shooter, going by the cod article, I wouldn't have thought anyone would want this, afterall it's just a TPS, just like the rest really with different makeup.
@RedMageLanakyn I'd have $2. One of them was a coworker of mine who got his copy on launch day with Zelda... Needless to say I was and still am super jealous whenever I see him playing it during breaks.
@EDF ??? Given how Splatoon performed for a new ip, I don't see how you came to that conclusion. And it's definitely not like all other tps.
@Equinox Not a good idea. Unless there's a good reason to delay(Like say they found a game-breaking glitch), delaying for superficial reasons like 'build up stock' would just kill any hype the game has built up. Sure there would be more than enough copies, problem would be is no one is buying them because the hype died.
Every Nintendo ad ever just makes me think: "God, young people dress like idiots nowadays"
Why are they pointing at his bum? Did he forget to wipe his ink?
@deucezulu22
It's a TPS no matter how you look at it, regardless if it's life looking or cartoonist. Actually it takes some inspiration from 3ds version off kid icarus, well the campaign mode is just a TPS platforms game, no different from rachet and clank in that respect, and paintball games have been around long before this game. It just borrows from other games, I guess I am trying to say it ain't special, it's just another shooter. Having played the original that's my conclusion
League battles and spectator mode!
Splatoon 2 doesn't support local multiplayer (i.e. on the same console) right?
@EDF "Hmm a shooter, going by the cod article, I wouldn't have thought anyone would want this, afterall it's just a TPS, just like the rest really with different makeup."
Yeah, but genres of games are pretty much locked in at this point in time. You can't expect anything new unless new, or unconventional, hardware becomes available that could provide an experience the current hardware can't produce.
The only thing left that can be done is to come up with a fresh take on a genre, and Splatoon does just that. Now since you said:
"...and paintball games have been around long before this game. It just borrows from other games..."
That makes it obvious you've never played or seen much from Splatoon. The one thing that makes Splatoon (as a series) the most different experience from your bog-standard shooters is its ink mechanics that gives the player the ability to hide (where literally any random opposing color ink puddle can have a enemy team member lying in wait), to reload (which swimming in ink is the fastest, but not the only way to reload), and to traverse the map in ways no other shooter has done before (fire some ink onto a wall and you can swim up to reach another area, hide, or mount a sneak attack).
The rest of the game will have similar elements as other games. All game modes except for turf war and, to a lesser extent, Splat Zones, share commonalities with other shooters. Splat Zones is basically 1 or 2 point King of the Hill except whichever team makes their total count reach zero wins, Rainmaker is Capture the Flag except you're running the 'flag' to the opposing team's base and the 'flag' is also an overpowered weapon. Tower Control is a Payload mode except one player needs to actually ride the platform to keep moving, and the 'Tower' (which I believe is based on a Japanese ceremonial pillar, looks like the Washington Monument, but tiny) on the platform itself can be used as a very small wall to take cover behind. And lastly, the new Salmon Run mode in Splatoon 2 is obviously a horde mode.
You're right that Splatoon is just another third-person shooter. But people like Splatoon, (and over 4.6 Million copies of Splatoon have been sold on a platform that sold almost 14 Million units), as well as why people like different online third -person/first-person shooters/MOBAs even though they're mostly the same and 'borrows from other games', because of Splatoon's different presentation and game mechanics. Splatoon as opposed to Lawbreakers, Paladins, Overwatch, 2016 Doom, Paragon, CoD, Battlefield, Rainbow Six Siege, Blacklight Retribution, CS:GO, Team Fortress 2, Battlefield 1942, Unreal Tournament, Quake III Arena, Team Fortress, Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, Redneck Rampage, Classic Doom, Marathon, all these games' multiplayer modes are the similar and 'borrow from other games' (listed mostly from recent to oldest) but it's their presentation and game mechanics that make them different and enjoyable. And that's as close as we're going to get to something entirely 'new' for the foreseeable future, like it or not.
@masterLEON
I agree, @EDF can't have played Splatoon. I've played Splatoon for over 2000 hours, and he definitely played a different game than I did.
@masterLEON
Yep, i owned it on wii u. The hide mechanic is just another cover system that's expanded on. I mentioned paintball games just as a reminder that there are games out there that use paint, also games like The unfinished Swan uses splatter paint everywhere, though it's nothing like this, it's a first person shooting adventure. Hey I remember marathon and blood plus many others like shadow warrior, MSDOS, I still play original doom and love a bit of Duke Nukem, I have the megaton edition on vita that I play now and then, yeah love the old games, now that's when many games were original, just maybe I have seen it all and want something new and not just revised editions of games. Going back to sales, I didn't say Splatoon wouldn't sell because it clearly did, not sure about those numbers you said, afterall vgacharts is never right, they have the wii u at 13.9 million so far but Nintendo said themselves they only shipped 13.5 before discontinued, it's the same for vita, they have it at a 3 hundred thousand less than the very reliable mediacreate numbers, yep vgacharts can't be trusted at all but I am sure Splatoon sold many millions and number 2 will sell more than the first, also been the first shooter to hit the switch will also help it
The video was quite informative.
I've never played a shooter before so I'm excited and a bit nervous in anticipation of this game. Looking at the beefed up single player campaign as well as the multiplayer makes it look like the perfect entry point to the genre for me.
@EDF Way to put a ridiculously negative spin on something. If you look at it this way then there has NEVER been any type of innovation in gaming . Metal gear solid is just a ripoff of covert ops missions IRL, GTA is the life of a car thief with an easy trigger, Mario Kart is just go kart and platformers are what? Maybe parkour... although i think the latter is more recent...
All art borrows from other art. If you like the paint systems in Splatoon, check out De Blob for the Wii for an earlier, single-player riff on the idea of spreading paint all over the place.
Or, for that matter, the first 30 seconds of the “Whip My Hair” video.

@EDF Yeah, vgchartz is definitely a ballpark range. On the other hand, according to Nintendo's Investor Relations site, as of March 31, 2017, Splatoon sold 4.8 Million copies (200k higher than vgchartz) and includes downloads.

And the WiiU is up to 13.56 Million, where it'll likely stay as the hundreds or so a week will soon dry up.

I promise to dig deeper into the numbers next time
@Nico85
Wasn't trying to be negative, I was just saying I have seen it all before, I have read many comments over the months saying that it's a new idea, but it ain't, don't get me wrong I think it will be one of the switch best sellers, but then again I also think mario+rabbids will be a biggie, though it reminds me of the x-com games, only with different make up. I would like to see new games I haven't ever seen before, Arms isn't one of them, it's more like virtual on at its core, I am sure there are games that could be made that don't play like anything we haven't seen before, hoping so
@EDF ?? Ya it's a tps shooter I never said it wasn't. By your logic you could say that about any game. Besides it comes down to it's game mechanics, which hasn't been done before.
