It's been revealed that Super Mario Odyssey will be released on 27th October in Nintendo's E3 presentation today and we got to see a lot more of the game, including the Cappy the hat's ability to possess other characters.
One newly revealed gameplay mechanic which caught our eye was the ability for Mario to merge into a wall, which takes the gameplay into a 2D plain. Of course this is very reminiscent of the wall-merging ability found in 3DS favourite The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, but with a Mario-style twist.
Let us know what you think about this style of 2D gameplay in Super Mario Odyssey with a comment below.

That was really cool in the Treehouse presentation. The transition was one of the best bits.
Mario Phantom (Possessing skill like Danny Phantom) and now Mario Graffiti.
Wow...!
This looks super slick... And I can't believe you can possess enemies! Everything at E3 was great.
Why isn't there an article about the new Metroid for 3DS?
@snailkid It will come. They always slowly roll-out articles after a large amount of announcements.
In terms of this game, it looks amazing. Mario Galaxy + Mario 64 + tons of other amazing new features = must-have switch title. With this it is no wonder that Pokemon isn't out on switch this year... Nintendo would never have enough systems
The transition between 3D and the retro, 8-bit 2D sections is pretty cool, as is the music change. Definitely a cool new feature but I'm still trying to process the whole possessing mechanic with Cappy...
@snailkid Give them time. They're under massive pressure.
just looks great
this looks terrific
This game looks so amazing!
Love that it's coming out in October. The releases thus far have been spaced to perfection.
Sweet, it's going to be a Super Mario Odyssey Birthday for me this year!
I'll buy a Switch for this. Sunshine 2.
Not too happy about the amiibo, we already have Mario, Bowser and Peach. The selling point of amiibo is buy 1, use them in multiple gsmes. That's why they are supposed to be better than the other. They can sell as many versions of skins as they want, make as much money as they want, but the Mario, Bowser and Peach I have should do EVERYTHING these do, otherwise Nintendo lied and sold these under false pretenses. Sell the new ones, great idea, but don't make me buy more $15 skind, that's wrong.
Metroid Prime 2 Samus Returns just showed 2 new amiibo. We don't own either of the old ones do its good you have a chance to buy them, but people who do own them shouldn't need to buy new ones to unlock the same stuff.
I'm not anti-amiibo, but I am against feeling like I was lied to. Buy once, use in multiple games, that's how they promoted these, that's what I paid for, that's what I expect. And people who don't want to buy amiibo should be a able to purchase the DLC. Don't lock $3 skins behind $15 amiibo that can only be found on eBay. It's not like the info is in the NFC chip, it's already in the game.
First Zelda, now Mario. It's all too much.
Game is day 1 though.
A fantastic feature that deserves to be reused.
Lbw utilised it will and this expands upon a very cool feature.
The waiting game starts
Retro goodness once again! Nintendo knows us.
It looks so impressive, and I can't believe how well the open world looks and feels. They kept bringing up Super Mario Sunshine when describing the game and I can definitely see the comparison.
I think that this mechanic fits a lot better in a Mario game rather than in a Zelda game, I think it will feel like it was always made for this game! I can't wait to play it! Mario Odissey, Sonic Mania and Skyrim are the games I'm more hyped about right now!
It's these little touches that make me love Nintendo so much...
Innovation at its finest. Though I could had been okay with just the enemy possessing cap, this feature will be the icing on the already good Super Mario cake.
They've really injected something special into Mario here. Didn't think it would work at first but they knocked this out of the park.
This reminded me of Nebulus from back in the days on my Atari ST
@rjejr You missed the point of Amiibo. It was a last ditch desperate cash grab that unexpectedly became a success. It was supposed to be the WiiU Salvation Fund. But now they're popular so they have to keep selling them.
I can't think of a mechanic better suited to the Mario franchise ever. Why hasn't this been done with Mario before? It seems the perfect way to blend 2D and 3D Mario.
Nintendo definitely has their groove back
Pretty cool throwback to Zelda LBW.
Nintendo has also hinted at local multiplayer in this game as well, so that's even more good stuff to look forward to.
I'm sorry but the idea of possessing and controlling enemies with your cap in order to solve puzzles and defeat other enemies is GENIUS.
3d Mario marathon starts today
The more I see on this game, the more I check my calendar to see if Oct. 27 is here yet!
It looks great, and so well put together. EAD Tokyo showing all its talent right here!
@rjejr
So, e3 has come and gone. Let's discuss.
First of all, Metroid Prime 4. The Half Life 3 of Nintendo. It's coming. Holy moly I'm still pinching my cheeks on this one. Mainline Pokémon coming to Switch too? That's pretty big news. I'll definitely play through this one. Total hype. Xenoblade 2 looks immaculate, Fire Emblem Heroes seems to be even better than Hyrule Warriors (plus I'm way more a FE fan than Zelda), and the new Yoshi and Kirby games looks like pure gold (and definitely something you'll like, no doubt). The new Metroid remake on 3DS is total hype (gosh I just wanna bury that system and it won't die lol), Skyrim looks incredible with that motion and Zelda content, and Mario Odyssey, well, I don't think it even needs to be said. You know.
As for the rest, I'm on board the hype train for Monster Hunter now! At first it looked weird, and gave the impression of an open world and just seemed to be a drastic departure, but as more information has rolled out I've discovered this is actually a real core entry in the series and all the staple mechanics will be present, it's not open world either, just has segmented areas removed in maps. I've done a complete 180 on this game in 24 hrs, it's amazing. But now after scouring the trailer multiple times I can say with confidence this game is looking to potentially be my dream game (aside from not being on Switch- Sony apparently paid Capcom to ensure Nintendo doesn't get it). Hunt with me!
Also, Skyrim VR... hype. Shadow of the Colossus is hype, and Spider-Man is hype. Also God of War looks good too. And then there's Ori and the Will of the Wisps on Xbox One which will surely be a masterpiece! Oh, and the Xbox One X. Seems cool at least. I'll be upgrading (mainly for the sake of multiplats on my 4KTV... time to move on from the PS4 Pro)
I agree that this looked really smooth in the footage. And the possesing might be fun too. But other then that it didn't look that exciting. Not even close to Sunshine or Galaxy.
I think the 2D bits look extremely fun. Looking forward to this game more and more.
@NEStalgia "You missed the point of Amiibo"
tchotchke
@JaxonH "So, e3 has come and gone. Let's discuss."
Glad to see you got over your XX depression. BLPs is the depressed one, you're the happy one, I'm the old cranky one, you can't go messing up the band.
I feel like I'm still in the midst of E3 w/ all of these emails, slowly catching up. It will take me a few days to decompress. Oh, and it was 90' the past 3 days, that kind of heat always messes me up.
Overall E3 was lame. Partly b/c I am old and cranky, I may just ignore it all next year, but that seems to be the overall read I'm getting.
EA - Why did I watch that? It sapped my will too live, dont' think I ever recovered. It's all EA's fault.
MS - New high powered box w/ a lot of pixelated and cartoony retro indie games, $499. "Console launch exclusive"
Ubi - Here's the BG&E2 you all wanted, it's online. Sort of. Maybe. It may come out this time unlike 2008 & 9, but we're not telling you which consoles. And they still won for Mario + Rabbids
Sony - Remember all those great games we showed you in 2016? Well here they are again, coming out in 2018. Hey, it worked well for Zelda.
Nintnedo - XC2. 2D Kirby, 2D Yoshi. Mario. Over. Treehouse had 30 minutes of 2D Samus on 3DS.
There were bright spots - Mario is game of the show, I don't care what anybody says, it's the reason videogames were invented - fun, real time fun, easy to win, hard to complete. Happy. Colorful. God of War seems to have dumped fixed camera - so PS1 - and QTE. Then Spiderman went all in on the QTE. And both in 2018, meaning 1 of them will slip to 2019. Maybe even to PS5 like the Last Guardian slipped from PS3 to PS4.
Where was RDR2? FF7R? KH3? Dreams? DQ11? Too much missing, too many games in 2018, maybe on the current hardware. If FF7R is going to be in parts or episodes or installments, pieces, whatever, no way they call come out on PS4 as PS5 will launch by then.
So, Mario. That I need to buy 5 amiibo for. You're going to need a bigger apartment.
