While a minority of gamers treat rival consoles as territories to fight over in the so-called 'Console Wars', typically most players and the big three companies wish each other well in public. Xbox UK has done so ahead of the Nintendo spotlight, and in the process managed to get some fans a little over-excited.
You can see what we mean below.
We doubt this is an actual tease, but rather a mischievous social media manager having some fun with the goodwill message.
Still, we can dare to dream...

.....They know something.
No way will Smash be at this E3 unless they want to leave ARMS without a leg to stand on.
Those silly social managers...getting our hopes up and stuff.
Microsoft seems like it's having fun, I like it.
Remember SNES Mini has also been hinted at by them, so maybe Xbox know the ins and outs of Nintendo's E3.
Watch your dreams get SMASHed
VC please
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Microsoft please xD
Leaves me to find the url to see it live... Is it up on Nintendo yet?
I got a huge, colossal... (you know what, I don't know if I can finish that sentence, so here's a visual pun).
JESUS, I've already had to suffer through all the false hopes for the two of my most wanted Smash characters, Rayman and Banjo, and now this......
That's actually pretty cool. It's like how Microsoft wasn't shy about showing the Switch in the Minecraft trailer.
I reckon it's just being playful.
And tbh, it would be a bit of a letdown if one of the 'reveals' is just 'Smash U Deluxe'.
Plus, with ARMS and Pokken Tournament Deluxe on the horizon, now is surely not the time to be talking Smash.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE unless it releases Next year
@danielman9 Even mentioning it will do harm.
If its a new smash im not too excited.To me its a series that went downhill funwise from the first entry. But who knows maybe theyll convince me this time.
Still be something better than smash.
This aaaaaaaaaalmost makes me believe Banjo & Kazooie are going to be in Smash Bros for Switch. ....almost.
Well I certainly wouldn't say no to a Smash Deluxe release (in say, late Q3) with all the DLC plus a few more bits and bobs thrown in.
Sonic, Spring Man, Inkling...
Give us Rare replay and all is forgiven!
Master Chief in Smash...
@SLIGEACH_EIRE as much as I wish it wasn't true, you're right Smash probably isn't coming this year and if it is between ARMS and Pokken there's no way they'd announce it until both games have been out for awhile so they don't kill the sales. But if you think about it... That would make a KILLER mid December Nintendo Direct. "Smash will be here right before Christmas"
I hope not.....
Arms and pokken tournament are releasing within months of each other.
Even announcing smash bros would be overkill for the genre imo
@SLIGEACH_EIRE well even if they didn’t announce it I probably still won’t get arms. Doesn’t look that great
@ericflapjack Yeah. I think Playstation was the only console E3 presser to not show the Switch in some form.
@danielman9 ARMS sounds and looks weird but as soon as people play it most quickly find it fun.
Its yet another case of Nintendo giving us what we didn't realise we always wanted.
@leo13 I was thinking late August but ya I could definitely see it happening. Even the dogs on the street knows it's coming eventually, and definitely within the next year, but more likely at Christmas.
I hope they do not announce anything related to Smash at all.
@danielman9 Even then many will decide to hold off (especially ARMS which is quite different to all other fighting games and therefore less instantly appealing) and wait for a possible Smash next year.
@AlexSora89 way to accidentally make "Marowak" a euphemism.
@nhSnork
My Cubone just evolved with that message, no joke.
Please, no Smash. The Switch is swamped with fighting games, give us something different. If there must be more Wii U ports (and I'm sure there must...) there are better options right now.
I hope no Smash or else it will be a buffed Wii U port and then it will be like I have bought the Switch for nothing.
You know i kinda like this, it shows respect.
I'm not sure if I've ever read of Nintendo wishing Microsoft or Sony good luck or even saying good things about them. They must have at some point?
A brand new Smash might be the thing that finally gets me hyped for the Switch. A Wii U port with a few new characters won't excite me that much.
I'm keeping my expectations low, but we'll see. Hopefully we'll be pleasantly surprised in the Nintendo Spotlight.
There's not been a great deal to get excited about from the conferences this year, and what there has isn't coming in 2017.
Nintendo have a chance to impress a lot of people with their 2017 lineup, even if nothing else is announced. Which we know won't happen.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Not to mention Pokken, both of which have an invitational this week. Maybe they'll tease one for next year? That's enough time for all of them to thrive and a (hopefully new) Smash to be a focus for next E3.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Not just ARMS, Pokken too. I don't think they're going to announce a Smash when, for the first time in decades, they're also releasing two other fighting games.
Personally I would be just fine with a Smash release between now and Holiday 2017. If the game is available now, just release it. I already plan on grabbing ARMS at release anyway, as well as Splatoon. I was only lukewarm toward Pokken Tournament as I have it on Wii U, so if true this wouldn't have affected my purchasing it. Releasing Smash on Switch will push some people to buy and most will still want new IP like ARMS.
@Octane True but I couldn't fit in in the joke.
@MarioPhD I don't think Nintendo will be adding much to Smash on Switch, so why hold off? Like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe fans will want it, Wii U owners will have another reason to switch over. A rerelease shouldn't affect a new IP release, I would easily buy both. Nintendo needs Smash fans to own a Switch, and regardless ARMS with promised new content will sell.
@AlexSora89 You got a huge...mother fetish? I kid XD
@crimsontadpoles This would be a rerelease of Smash for Wii U and 3DS. It takes years to build new games in the series so rereleases of Smash Wii U and Mario Kart 8 give Switch owners something now and something to look forward to later. Namely Mario Kart 9 and Smash Bros 5 in a few years on Switch. To some a rerelease of Smash on Switch like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is no news at all and they would rather just wait for new games. Personally I would double dip and buy new games like ARMS.
That's what we all hope. . . .
The consensus seems to be that both Microsoft and Sony gave underwhelming presentations. The table is set for Nintendo.
Their next tweet was - "Can't wait until Xbox and Switch owners can play Monster Hunter World together. Oh wait."
@chardir Same. Would it kill them to come up with actually good new franchises?
I hope there is a smash deluxe. With the $309 in DLC a deluxe version with all that would be a deal at $60
@Reignmaker I actually thought Microsoft's showing was pretty good and had a bunch of really interesting games, which weren't all just typical gritty and "realistic" looking action games:
http://www.inceptional.com/2017/06/12/my-favourite-games-from-microsofts-e3-press-conference/
Sony's conference was a bit less interesting for me personally, because it did have mostly just a bunch of gritty and "realistic" looking action games; but it also showed of a bunch of VR titles too, which was cool:
http://www.inceptional.com/2017/06/13/my-favourite-games-from-sonys-e3-2017-press-conference/
@Spoony_Tech If Rare Replay does happen you can thank me, as the only reason I bought an Xbox was b/c it was bundled with it.
Though as it turned out Ori and Gears of War, also bundled, we're pretty good too. Sunset Overdrive is by far my favorite though, brings me back to the glorious PS2 fun platforming days.
But since nobody else mentioned it that I read, in the MS show Mine craft on Switch is playable with Mine craft on X1, hence the tweet.
I swear I'm the only person that really wants a Smash Bros 4 Deluxe.
@Spoony_Tech Yes! I would love to see that!
So far...Microsoft did better than I thought they would. Sony has that awesome Spider-Man game but nothing else that mind-blowing. Ubisoft had the better show, really.
Part of me feels like Smash Deluxe has to be on the way, but not this year. I don't see why a quick tease at the end for 2018 would hurt the other games...ARMS, Pokken, and Super Smash Bros. are very, very different fighting games when you think about it. Personally I want ARMS and Smash.
Sometimes it feels a little bit condescending how these "big" companies pat poor ol' Nintendo on the head. ;p
I can't wait for Super Smash Bros. for Xbox One X
Can it means they know it will be a failure?! It seems very sarcastic to me.
I hope I'm wrong
One of my biggest hopes too is that Nintendo SMASHes it up.
Microsoft just did more PR for Nintendo than they managed for themselves during their entire presentation...
Sorry to home in but supposedly their info was leaked on 4chan but it's worth a grain of salt I hope I don't get in trouble for posting a link here but found this threw a Google search http://heavy.com/games/2017/06/super-mario-maker-2-switch-nintendo-spotlight-e3-2017-treehouse-report-rumor-4chan/ check it and tell me what you think as I'm hoping some is true and some is not
I think people are looking too much into it. A light-hearted bit of industry bonhomie is all. Fair play to them.
@ericflapjack that's what I first thought of. They are doing cross platform between switch and Xbox and windows for Minecraft.
Everyone keeps saying how it would not be good for Arms and Pokken. They are all verydiffernt flavors and I don't see that being the case.
Example, I will buy Arms but not Pokken because Arms fits my game style. It has nothing to do with them being in compatition.
It's just being playful, but I like that attitude from Xbox's community manager. Sadly, E3 is prime ground for brand fanboys to appear and crap on everyone for not liking their brand or due to a game being exclusive.
Microsoft you tease
In my opinion, Microsoft killed it and they know they killed it. I was very impressed with what they brought this E3 - and I went in expecting nothing at all. Sony on the other hand disappointed - so so so so much. Like, I expected way more, but only Spiderman managed to hold my attention. But I suppose when you bring 40+ games, more than a few of them will match what every consumer is looking for.
Well, I'm expecting Nintendo to hit somewhere between the disappointment of Sony and the amazement of Microsoft, but all I can say is that Microsoft have every right to post a message of this nature. Whether they were playing around or were looking to be arrogant. I certainly can't argue with what they brought this year.
@ThatNyteDaez I liked the games MS brought, but I was disappointed by the price of the Xbox One X. Also, the reasoning of buying an xb 1x or PS4 pro for 4K alone seems wasteful if you already own both (I do). Nintendo has been firing on all cylinders lately, I think they have the ability to put out the best press conference of E3 this year.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE It's not like they'll be releasing Smash this month if they announce it. ARMS is out in 3 days.
@Ernest_The_Crab
Absolutely: Onett is where I pick up chicks.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I can't say I agree. The two games are so fundamentally different. A third-person boxing game and a side-scrolling beat-em-up aren't exactly of identical genre. And at the moment, the Switch has so few original games that I think a lot of people are going to pick up ARMS out of curiosity. There's absolutely no way we'll be seeing Smash for a good while, anyway, even if it is teased tomorrow.
Of course MS wishes Switch success. A successful Switch = $$$$ from Minecraft. Which is still more profitable than XBox hardware.
@ThatNyteDaez What is it you saw at XBox's show that piqued you more than Sony's show? (Serious question, I liked the show, but it seems less memorable now...and I hate Dual Shock controllers so I want to be tempted by 1X, but probably will stick with the PS line. bad controller and all.)
@Ps4all While I watched the show I liked XBox's games. After watching the Sony show I can't remember any of XBox's games, which is probably not good. Most of what they brought was 3rd party and timed exclusives. I don't see the Pro/X as being about 4K. I see it as being getting a stable framerate at 1080p like the original one was SUPPOSED to have done. Which makes me bitter enough to boycott both
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Nice pun.
Now get out. : )
Do people really see ARMS and Smash as really similar games. I know they're both about thumping seven bells out of each other but in terms of gameplay they feel world's apart to me.
@ThatNyteDaez Monster Hunter World was disappointing?
@TossedLlama @SLIGEACH_EIRE I see what you did there. The memes are strong with you guys today
@thesilverbrick I have to agree with Slig on this one. USFII, ARMS, Pokken.....3 fighters in a short space of time don't really need Smash competing with them. That's just cannibalization. Next year, sure. But Smash is still enjoying 3DS success, so that's cannibalization in 2 directions before they wean off the 3DS. Fighters are time sinks that take a lot of dedication.....if the same audience is drawn to all four they'll pick one or MAYBE 2 to focus on and ignore the others. They could still do it of course, it wouldn't surprise me, but I'm not sure it's a good idea if they do it.
@AlexSora89
But I don't see any girls around here.
That makes it weird.
@ProjectCafe
Way to ruin the joke!
Damn Microsoft are a naughty bunch XD
@AlexSora89
Joke wasn't even that good.
No offense to you.
@ProjectCafe
Who's offended? My jokes are 88,7% lame.
@AlexSora89
Like.
@NEStalgia I would welcome a stable frame rate and increased draw distance, more AI on screen, more intelligent AI. But it seems like the marketing message has been 4K. I'm not saying the other things won't happen, it's just not the buzz they are pushing. As far as the MS exclusive games, both State of Decay 2 and Sea of Thieves have stuck in my head, even after Spiderman and Mario Odyssey. But I am excited for all of those.
@Ps4all i think framerate, draw distance poly count and texture res, and lighting/shaders/particles will be improved, but AI can't change because that would make X1S inferior gameplay wise wish is (rightly) a nono. But i am surprised the message is all 4k without a lot of fanfare for the 1080 improvement.
State of decay.....i can't remember what that one was. Last night is the one sticking in my head as super cool. And ori. Sea of thieves looks awesome.....i wish it were anything but persistent online multi. I hate that kind of game, which is a shame because everything else about it looks awesome.
@ProjectCafe
I did.
@NEStalgia I forgot about "The Last Night" that game looks great. Days Gone on PS4 looks pretty great as well. Also looking forward to the new Metroid Prime (mysterious as it is). There is no shortage of awesomeness on its way.
@AlexSora89
No, I was notifying you that I liked your post.
Who commands someone to like their post?
Why are people so excited for a port?
@ProjectCafe
I don't know, but I did like your post as well!
This is weird.
@AlexSora89
Eh.
Looking back on this I feel maybe people at Xbox UK just wanted Smash Switch as much as the rest of us. We brought the false hope upon ourselves...
