Last week we reported that a Steam trailer outed the PC release date for Sonic Mania, and hoped that the console versions would match up. The good news for Nintendo Switch owners (and players with other systems) is that the game is sharing the same release date across all platforms - 15th August.
The announcement has been made with an awesome trailer, below. SEGA has also confirmed North American pricing of $19.99 USD/$25.99 CAD for the standard download edition, which isn't too bad in our book.
It is possible to pre-order the download on PS4, PC and Xbox One, but that's not yet being offered for Switch. In any case the Switch version is arriving on the same day as all other platforms.

Are you excited about this one?

Looks awesome
This makes the overpriced Collector's Edition I have preordered, which I was already kinda salty about, seem even more overpriced.
Can't wait to get my Collector's Edition! I'm glad I was able to take advantage of the Prime discount.
AWESOME! Now hopefully the Collector's Edition which I do have pre-ordered at EB Games, goes down in price. It's way too overpriced for what is being offered. But still, happy I have it pre-ordered!
The animation in that trailer is just brilliant. That's the Sonic I know! Cannot wait to get this game.
Take note Capcom. Sega creates a new 16-bit Sonic and charges $20. Makes the $40 Street Fighter pricetag seem that much more ridiculous.
I literally just teared up. The music, the graphics, that hand drawn animation. As someone who used to be the biggest Sonic fan ever as a kid, I just want to say, thank you so much for making this beautiful game.
I'm coming around on this one. While I'm definitely getting good classic vibes from it, I'll always be wary of Sonic after the slew of disappointments since he went 3D.
Sonic's back, baby!
Ah well I'm paying 70 for the collector's edition.
I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing's happening!
Looks great. Likely be a £16.99/£17.99 release here which is reasonable
I'm glad they priced this is reasonably priced.
Day one download!
SEGA does what Nintendon't
(As in, working with fans, because from what I've read, the sonic mania engine base was a fanmade one)
That's a sweet trailer, making me more tempted to pick this one up.
Perfect recreation of that classic Sonic style from the Genesis-CD era. Animation looks brilliant, and whole game is cheaper than I expected!! A must-buy for me!
Why no 3ds?
The animator uses crosshatching for the shadows. That looked cool.
Definitely Release Day Buy & Knuckles!
@Gridatttack That's cause Nintendo knows what to do with its IP, Sega literally does not so the fans had to do it for them. Of course if Nintendo was in the same boat they would be doing the same thing.
Oh wow. Glad to see Tyson Hesse draw some Sonic again.
Can't wait. Looks better and better every time I see it.
Very cool trailer. I remain skeptic as to the game itself, but we shall see.
Is this not hetting a physical release?
Day 1 buy
wish it was physical, but the CE is better than nothing
Despite owning all the Genesis sonic games, I'm not so great at them. Despite that, I still want this game. Go Sonic!
Sheesh I hope this animation is included in the game somewhere. Lotta love put into this.
Also, I haven't been this excited for a Sonic game since S3&K.
Regarding the price, Capcom take note. And this is a modern effort. I think it's fair. It would be nice to see a physical release as well.
I played a demo of this at a Switch Preview Event and it is a LOT of fun. These trailers just cement my initial reactions to it. So very excited for it - much more so than Sonic Forces.
I'm one of the suckers in for a CE that contains no physical game. I'm VERY annoyed, I thought when I ordered it it actually was a physical copy. It's silly it isn't.
But there's no way I can pass up a Genesis figurine that plays the SEEEGAAA sound, and 25 years later, one last, genuine, honest to goodness, black plastic, grid patterned Genesis game case!!
I was worried they were going to charge full or near-full price for this. Thankfully I was wrong.
I want a movie in that art style now pleeeaassseeeee
@retro_player_22 Except for Metroid. Nintendo doesn't give a crap about that franchise. And F-Zero.
Does anyone know the significance of two of the buttons in the lift at the end saying "M" and "K"? They focused on it so I assume it has some sort of meaning but I don't know what!
Anyway, this looks awesome, I love how the loop on the sand stage collapsed after Sonic ran through it.
I never really noticed Sonic had been redesigned until Sonic Generations brought back "2D Sonic" and I must say I really prefer the old 2D Sonic, he just looks much better to me. It's like the new Sonic is trying too hard to look cool.
Wow, was totally expecting and prepared to pay $30 for this. The fact it's only $20 is great news!
Thank god they decided not to go with a huge gimmick for this game because it's looking really, REALLY good! I just hope the team developing the 3D games will take note!
Was gonna skip this one, but for $20, I might actually bite, even if it is so late in the summer and school starts back up again
@SLIGEACH_EIRE The fact that Shovel Knight, Shantae, and Steam world all get physical releases, and this doesn't makes me kind of irrationally mad. I would absolutely throw down 10 dollars or 15 more to get a boxed version with a soundtrack or something.
Awesome trailer! Can't wait for the game.
@BulkSlash The buttons were 1, 2, 3, K, and M. Sonic 1, 2, 3, Knuckles, and Mania
@Link506 My thoughts exactly. 20 bucks is reasonable. Also...reading this made me realize Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces are two different games.......
The pricing I think is pretty solid. You even get a 10% discount if you pre purchase on steam so it's like 18 dollars
kept waiting for ahha to star playing
That is a very good price, and I like that Knuckles and Tails are in there too.
@NinjaWaddleDee It's worse than that. There's a $70 collector's edition that includes a genuine Genesis/Mega Drive game case, a Sonic/Genesis figurine, some other random junk, and a.....download code printed on a card. It's a collector's edition for over 3x the price of the game and it doesn't even include a physical game!
$20 is a lovely price, I'm very much looking forward to it
Man, that trailer makes me happy.
It combines a lot of the things I love in this world: Sonic; videogames; pixel art; animation; lots vibrant and bold colour; a sense of childlike wonder and fun--a fair price (take note, Capcom) . . .
At least based on what I've seen thus far, this has a genuine shot at being the best Sonic game ever.
This is how videogames are supposed to be.
@Anguspuss https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djV11Xbc914
@Menchi187 Yeah I honestly thought £30-£40 digitally that CE is so highly priced.
Awesome! Loved the trailer and that's a great price! Can't wait until August!!
@Gridatttack I 1000% feel you on that one.
Just imagine what Nintendo could do if it worked with some of the extremely passionate, talented, and dedicated teams out there creating a whole bunch of amazing fan-made games, and if it properly helped and supported them in creating and polishing their projects to the highest degree. . . .
I mean, seriously; imagine what fans could get if Nintendo actually/officially got behind a project like this (as just one example):
http://www.mother4game.com/
If I ran Nintendo I'd be on that in a heartbeat--in the best possible way--and help those guys to get it finished, polished up to Nintendo final release standards, and launched on the Switch eShop asap (making sure people know it's a fan-made creation and pure passion project).
@Menchi187 Yeah, I'm about 90% sure I'll be cancelling mine. I feared that the game itself would be $30-40 so I would essentially just be paying about $15-20 more for all the added stuff. I got mine reserved via Walmart for only like $58 when the pricing wasn't official yet, but I don't think the extras are even worth the mere $38 more I'd be paying (to me, anyway), let alone anyone going for the full $70 it costs now. If the game only came on a cart in the special edition, it'd be one thing, but nope. Glad the game is priced right, but man, the value proposition for the special edition just plummeted.
Love the pencil test animations. There's almost always so much more life in them than fully inked and painted cels (digital or otherwise).
@NEStalgia Yep, I'm totally aware of that. It's a rip off unless you like statues. The fact that many indie games are getting physical releases and this isn't really disappoints me. Although, pre orders aren't yet available for the switch digital version, so maybe they will confirm a switch physical release! I can only dream. Even if it's like an Amazon exclusive or something, like Gravity Rush Remastered.
@impurekind AM2R and Mother 4 on switch would be heaven. Nintendo could make a profit too! Sell em' for 20 bucks each.
I'm pretty much wait-and-see on anything not named Odyssey.
@NinjaWaddleDee Agreed. There's a whole bunch of genuinely great fan-made tribute games that with a bit of polish could be stellar eShop releases for Switch.
$20 is spot on. Day one purchase here--on Switch.
Have had both the PC, and Switch Collector's Editions pre-ordered from Best Buy, for months. Got both for under $44 each, before tax. Thanks GCU, and Visa Checkout promotion! lol.
@MarioPhD it's even worse here on europe. Usually a CE will be equal in $ to € (not conversion but they're usually close enough anyways) ex. a $100 CE will be €100. Sonic Mania for some reason isn't like that. Announced for $60 originally then a while later for europe at £80. Which is over €90/$90. Given what is in it, it's a bad mad, a bit....mania? Maybe I was already feeling burned by the huge disparity as it was in price by region, let alone the price of the game being unknown till now.
As @VENOMVSCARNAGE said, this particular game is extra burning us europeans. Be it me in Ireland with € pricing or him in the UK with £, this is a clear case of screwing us.
I'm legitimately considering cancelling mine and getting a digital base release. If I want to hear the sega boot up, my mega drive still works.
Oh, my. Yes, folks, that IS Stardust Speedway. (Interesting that there's no 'C' button in the elevator, in that light.)
I'm sold! Can't wait for it to release!
@IceClimbers I like how 4 wasn't on there yet at the same time disappointed when CD was not one of the buttons
@retro_player_22 Playing safe by releasing similar games all over again will only take them so far :>
Besides, that was not the thing I was targeting. I mean in how instead of shutting down quality fangames (like AM2R), why can't instead work with something to appease everyone? (of course, it could be unannounced, but lets see. They know how to managed their IP? Well, what about Metroid? Surely Federation Force wasn't that great)
@NinjaWaddleDee If they do physical my CE had better darned well include it. I've never heard of "Video game collector's edition (video game not included)". It sounds like an eBay scam
Maybe the $70 was just a placeholder price and the price will magically be $40 or something as we get closer to release. Especially if people start canceling.
@NEStalgia "download code printed on a card"
Almost related - did you know DQX (not to be confused with DQXI) is coming out on Switch as a download code in a box a month after PS4 gets the disc version?
http://www.dualshockers.com/dragon-quest-x-ps4-nintendo-switch-gets-first-screenshots-and-box-art/
Who writes "all-in-one" package on an empty box w/ a code?

@NEStalgia Yeah it definitely should.
@NEStalgia Several of the big releases of 2016 had CE's without games included. Not even in digital form. Mirror's Edge Catalyst CE can be bought legit from stores without the game. Gears of War 4, moving onto this year too Resident Evil 7 and Mass Effect Andromeda are the same.
That was incredible ;A; brings me back to the Sonic Boom opening :3
@IceClimbers Oh yes of course! Thank you, I saw MK and I was thinking maybe it was some sort of hint that Sonic was going to be a DLC character in Mario Kart or something! D'oh! 🙄
Amazing!!!!!!!!!
Was really hoping for $15.00 USD on this...
@WhiteTrashGuy Sonic games on genesis were between 50 and 60 bucks when they came out in 1990s money, so 19.99 is a friggin bargain. A company did make Sonic Mania with the expectation of making a profit after paying all their employees.
I'll get this for Switch, I can't wait to play it!
Wow, watching this just makes me feel so... happy. I just want them to make a cartoon of this style. WASH THE SONIC BOOM FROM MY MIND!
So will there be any physical besides the $70 collectors edition? I'd pay $30 for it even if it's just the same as digital but with case and stuff. No way I'll buy the collectors edition though...
Wow, what a great trailer. Makes Sonic Forces feel even less significant. I'm feelin the Mania! (Points at Sonic Mania T-Shirt)
As much as I am sceptical for Sonic Forces, I am definitly going to buy Sonic Mania.
that was a good trailer.
Jesus, those are some of the best graphics I've seen in years.
(I mean ingame, the pencil art is very nice too)
I hope this sells very well on the Switch. I'm getting the physical version, preordered a while ago. Amazon Prime discount incoming!
Control physics need to be on par with the original Genesis games. That was a reason why Sonic 4 was disappointing. They redeemed themselves with Sonic Generations. But something still felt slightly off.
@Menchi187 not even a download code? What the heck is it for then? What a messed up industry. What other industry could sell premium versions of their product that don't actually include the product?
@Agent721 there is no physical version just a CE with a download code.
@rjejr that's just gross. And triple as much on a console that relies on micro SD, but more bearable in that the dl should be smaller. I refuse to use my bandwidth to cover their distribution costs. Though in that case they SPENT the same on distribution. That's just madness.
Are these classic Sonic games from previous systems being re-released or is it a new original game with classic asthetic?
@NEStalgia
Dang it! Keep forgetting about that!! Hmmm... do I really want that statue??
I'm getting this for Knuckles. Finally he is playable in a true Sonic game again.
Day one! Good ol' Sonic gameplay definitively beats some of its last games. I'm glad Sega gave this guys a chance!
@Agent721 yes. Yes you do.
@NEStalgia
LOL! Yeah, probably!
@NEStalgia Thought of another one. Halo 5 in 2015 had a normal, limited and collector edition. Priced €70, €100 and €250 respectively. The normal and limited editions were physical copies but the collector edition, for €250 only had a digital code inside. There was so much fan backlash that fans who would be the most dedicated to pay for that edition, didn't even get a physical game. Microsoft stepped up and offered a replacement program. If you bought the collectors edition (which released a week early so you could download and preload the game before launch) you could contact microsoft and they would void your code and send you out a physical copy.
Can't speak for any others but I took that route and received my physical copy from MS at 11 the morning of official launch so I was happy.
@Menchi187 geeze, who actually approves these idiotic ideas? "I know, well still a collector's edition to people who love tangible items and well give them LESS!"
So I noticed what appears to be Stardust Speedway Past version in the trailer? Imteresting choice, particularly in taking the plant theme one step further. It's a fine choice as is, but it also makes me wonder if time travelling is involved in that zone, or even if each act is set in different periods).
I was thinking of getting it on a xbox to match the other sonic games, however, I've grown a little fond of the switch, and it seems like the perfect pairing.
An August release date? Hopefully I will be able to get a Switch by then since that would be my preferred way to play the game. Now if only Nintendo would get some more of their latest and greatest console in stores!
That animation is beautiful! Really hoping its used in the actual game! Sonic's going to have a big return to form this year.
@BulkSlash The K stands for Knuckles and the M stands for Mania.
Amusingly, there's no "4" above "K"
Loved the trailer. This is one I'll probably end getting sooner rather than later. Nostalgia is strong with this one.
BUT, I would love a new 2D Sonic with actual modern graphics instead of retro 16-bit. Which I do love, don't get me wrong! It's only that these day everything seems to be 8-bit or 16-bit graphics. It's starting to get tiresome.
Beautiful pencil animation definitely a must get, but I'm getting PC.
I actually got a little emotional watching that trailer, it was beautiful. (This was the Sonic I enjoyed growing up) I haven't been this hyped for a Sonic game since Sonic & knuckles, Sonic 3D Blast, and Sonic Adventure 2.
Day 1 buy! Provided I have a Switch by then. I gotta say...they missed a really good time to make the price $19.91.
Day 1 on Switch and eventually I'll nab the PS4 and xone versions!! Go Sega! And Get the keys already and open that treasure chest while you're at it! Need your classics on Switch please!! My wallet is ready!
@Gridatttack the whole game is handled by fans instead of sonic team
That trailer was amazing.
Does anyone know if there is a collectors edition for switch?
Hoping for a day one download for my Switch for this game. Looks too fun to pass on.
Oh, and that trailer was really awesome. I can't get enough of those "unfinished" animations!
Awful price! At this rate when I have a Switch I will never download a thing, since its all super expensive!
Nice trailer though.
No 3DS version?! :'-(
On Amazon.com you can pre-order the collectors edition still: https://www.amazon.com/Sonic-Mania-Collectors-Nintendo-Switch/dp/B01MY7SFWM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1496218612&sr=8-1&keywords=sonic+mania+switch
Pre-ordered this back in March, don't like how there is no physical version, but love classic sonic games too much to stop me buying this
Wow. Great price. Please be good now as I'm very interested at that price.
Wow those animated bits must be hand drawn, they look so good.
Silly trailer... how can a game be released on 8th 15 2017 when there is no 15th month =P
LOVED the hand drawn stuff. Trailer looks awesome, but I've always been worried about Knuckles being in the game. Growing up, playing as Knuckles was fun. But returning years later, I found his parts annoying. They messed with the pace of the game. I was always itching to get back to playing as Sonic. At least there are no signs of that cat (I don't remember his name) and his fishing pole being in this game or Amy.
Pre-ordered the collector's edition a few weeks ago. Looks awesome, can't wait.
Very excited for this, & I love the trailer & the music! Debating whether I'll bite & get the collector's edition or not though!
Hopefully they'll release a standard edition, hard copy for like 40 bucks. Don't need the statue and all that!
@Malcrash I think that's because CD hasn't happened yet by this games time if you rewatch the trailer you can see that stardust speedway is the past version so if time travel isn't in this game that means this game takes place before CD also adventure is pretty much the direct sequel to CD (I think seeing as a scenes reference CD) and sonic 4 never happened (thank God) so sonic mania looks like it come straight after sonic 3&K.... And I have now over analyzed something compleatly pointless beyond the point of being funny to the point of actually being sad.
@Henmii expensive?!?! Its 20 bucks for a game like this we expected 40 or 60 how is 20 to expensive
I wasn't really hyped at all for this game. I thought it looked okay, and at this price, I'll likely pick it up eventually... But holy crap, that trailer was awesome. Great music, animation, and the gameplay looked good too. Well done Sega.
@Fezzy_lord,
Because its a download. Downloads shouldn't cost more then 10 Euro in my opinion.
@Henmii did you ever take into account the fact that a lot of people are getting a cut of the money you pay, or the amount of work that's put into a game like this?
@Fezzy_lord,
Of course, but I am old-fashioned. No problem paying 50 Euro's for a retail version, but no way am I paying that much for a download.
On a sidenote: We have yet to see how much of it is new. Ok, it looks awesome and there are new stages. But there are also old stages. For all we know, the majority of the stages may be old. To me that devalues the package.
I'm very salty at the fact there is no physical release... Might not get the game. Same reason I didn't buy I Am Setsuna. I would have easily paid 30-35 dollars for this with a cartridge.
@Henmii
The cut is 60% old 40% new but the old stages are basicly just the graphics from the old ones with a bunch of new level design and new bosses that doesn't devalue the game one bit even then its $20 thats cheaper than a fast food dinner for two people for a game that you play way more than two or three times if sonic 1 2 3 and CD are anything to go by. and there was no way this was getting a physical release in the first place because its not worth it it would make the game more expensive for litterly no gain what so ever
Here's hoping it actually stays 20 bucks(with tax of course) because Nintendo is pretty much forcing their games to be overpriced on the Switch.
"The cut is 60% old 40 new%"
Hmm, that's still lots of old. But like you said those levels have been remixed somewhat. Ah well, still looks cool. And I guess I'll download it someday, just not that fond of the price.
