Movies based on video games have a habit of being somewhat inconsistent; for every decent effort there are countless terrible examples which totally fail to live up to the promise of the source material.
We'll let you decide which camp the upcoming Contra flick will fall into. The script - by Beijing Starlit Movie and TV Culture - gained approval from China’s film bureau last month, and there is speculation that 28-year-old Jing Tian will be cast in the movie.
Here's the official synopsis:
In 1988, a huge meteorite lands on an uninhabited island in the South China Sea. Chen Qiang and Li Zhiyong investigate but come up empty handed. 29 years later, Chen sends commandos Bill and Lance into a combat mission there to neutralize the villainous Red Falcon Organization, but end up facing a different enemy altogether.
The original arcade title - which was famously ported to the NES - boasted Arnold Schwarzenegger (Lance) and Sylvester Stallone (Bill) lookalikes on the cover and took place in the fictional Galuga archipelago.
The chances of this movie making it outside of China in any major capacity are slim, but would you like to watch it?

Coming full circle with their plagiarization of iconic 80s films huh?
"uninhabited island in the South China Sea"
In other words, a small population who belong to another country live there but since we refuse to recognize the island as theirs we'll claim it as our own.
I'm guessing China is going to succeed where Hollywood fails.. and make a good, fun video game movie. It's exactly the same task as making a good comic book movie... get good writers, actors & director and treat the audience like grownups.
And don't let Uwe Boll buy the license to the property. Very important that one.
I'm still waiting for Germany to produce a Bubble Bobble adaptation. Sorry, I really am out of jokes tonight! But for real, this got my attention.
@DanteSolablood Shhh!! If you say that devil-man's name three times in front of a mirror, he'll purportedly materialize and attack you!
@MagicEmperor He loves to challenge critics to a boxing match if they hate his stuff. As long as I landed one punch on his face, I'd be doing the movie world a favour.
Uwe Boll, Uwe Boll, Uwe Bo smack - thud - silence
@DanteSolablood Haha! Yep, I remember reading about that. But I support you!
This is...unexpected to say the least. But as a Chinese, I can tell you guys that Contra was really big here, like, REALLY BIG back in the day, just as iconic as super mario if not more so, and we're having a nostalgia boom right now, so, yeah we'll see.
Was the wiener gun necessary? haha
Okey dokey...
No! They need to release the NES and Contra games (Along with the Super NES) in China first!
A Contra movie could be pretty awesome if done right. I don't think this will be that movie; we'll see. . . .
A movie based on a game based on characters based on the movies🤔
@big_bad_bob
Really?! Thats very cool to hear! I love Contra, so this has got my attention!
At least I can set my expectations accordingly. More power to you China
@Agent721 recognition is one thing, but execution is another—you know, gun blazing, alien fighting, this kinda stuff sounds so Hollywood, afaik, Chinese movie productions avoid this genre like cancer, if we want our explosion/alien fix we just import...and all of a sudden, we're doing Contra movie... I don't know, man, personally I'm more "curious" than "excited"
Spoiler alert!
In the final third of the movie, just as all hope appears to be lost; scientists discover how to make 29 clones each of Lance and Bill. They can then proceed to wipe out the alien threat with reckless abandon, though they will argue vehemently over who gets the spread gun.
@big_bad_bob
I hear you, just trying to stay positive that one day, we'll get a good videogame movie! Cheers!
Probably will be better than anything Hollywood put their grubby hands on.
Sure. I'm always down for a good movie of this sort. They've been doing them for so long no one can possibly screw it up and Contra is based on action/sci-fi movies.
Whats really weird is just yesterday i designed a Contra movie poster, knowing absolutely nothing about this.
Crazy.
@OorWullie lol, get your facts straight. The South China Sea had been Chinese property for 1000's of years. So why did China lose them in the first place?
Once upon a time a group of warfaring ppl called the Manchus invaded China and ruled for 300 years up until WWII. These Manchus were good at war but inept at everything else. But they were overthrown just prior to WWII, and China became ruled by Chinese ppl again. Alas WWII had ended and China was too weak to deal with her own home country, let alone the uninhabited islands. But she's about to kick arse again and reclaim her rightful historic properties.
BTW, the Manchus were so inept they even lost to the Japanese during the first 2 conflicts. When ppl read Sino-Japanese wars, they think China vs Japan. Nope, it was China under Manchu dictatorship (in other words NOT the real China) vs Japan. The real China (that beat Japan in the 3rd Sino-Jap conflict) is just beginning to show its face to the world.
