Saber Interactive's NBA Playgrounds is hitting the Nintendo Switch eShop next week, it has been revealed.
We already knew that this NBA Jam-style title would be coming this month, but now we have a solid release date: May 9th. The game will cost $19.99 in North America.
Interestingly, it has also been revealed that NBA Playgrounds will occupy more space on the Switch's internal storage than the recently-released Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: 7.4GB, to be precise.
Here's the PR:
Classic NBA arcade action is back! Take your “A” game to the playground and beat the best in high-flying 2-on-2 basketball action. Play as NBA superstars and legends from the past, including Allen Iverson, LeBron James, Steph Curry and Shaquille O'Neal.
Features:
+ Up your Game! Features a progression system to unlock real NBA players. Uncover new moves for each player as you upgrade their experience.
+ Tournaments and Online Play. Play solo, with friends in local and online multiplayer, or against the world in online tournaments.
+ Lottery Pick System. The lottery pick system introduces a new twist to the game by rewarding great play with unique rewards.
+ Massive Roster of NBA Superstars. Current and retired ballers from all the official NBA teams will be available at launch. Hundreds more NBA superstars will be added post-launch.
+ Over-the-top Moves. Timing is key, whether you’re shooting 3-pointers, pulling off major dunks, showing off your finger-roll game, or defying analytics and winning with long 2-pointers

Nintendo are masters at compression
Need to give this a serious look plus the price is right. It has probably been 20 years since I've played NBA Jam! This looks right up that alley!
If this succeeds hopefully someone will be kind enough to give us a Tecmo Bowl clone!
This will be my first May eshop purchase.
This game looks alright, but will it be "BOOMSHAKALAKA" good?
It's gonna be a blast! Plus No microtransactions!
I just bought Mario Kart 8, Puyo Puyo, TumbleSeed, now this, going to get Blaster Master...
Nintendo, take my money!
I'm really looking forward to this. I loved NBA Jam in the arcades and this looks like possibly the next best thing. If this is a solid game this could be as good 2 player co-op as Mario Kart. Just think back in the day if you coulda busted out NBA Jam wherever you were and challenge your friends to a game. That is a possibility with NBA Playgrounds. Keeping my fingers crossed that this is a awesome game.
After skipping the MK8 double dip. I'm looking to get this. If this game fulfills it's potential as being a fun pick-up-and-play title, I'll be happy.
I hope this one turns out stellar and maye, just maybe more sports will follow. Come on, I need my "NHL Hitz" 2017 fix already!
I need to see this game running on the Switch before I commit to buying it.
Depending on the reviews, I would like a good sports game on the Switch.
Really hope this turns out well. The devs said they're bringing a Motocross title too and are looking into a 4 player co-op shooter that they say will be "perfect" for Switch. If NBA Playgrounds turns out to be good then they will be a dev to look out for.
Wow I expected to pay more than $20, not that I'm complaining. I can't wait! Was hoping for a physical release but whatevs. Day one.
Looks like a slam dunk purchase for me 😁. Can't wait to try this game.
Sold. $20 is a deal. I don't even like basketball, but NBA Jam was a blast on SNES. Will pick this up for the Switch on release day.
Nintendo is still master of compression and optimisation it seems. If any of their first party games were made by other developers we'd be seeing files sizes above and beyond 20GB for most of them I'd imagine.
Wanted this to be a physical release, but I'll definitely be getting this eventually if it's digital across the board, which I think it is.
Think it's worth the $19.99. Little NBA Jam nostalgia for me and an easier sports game for my kids then a straight up sim like NBA2K.
PS: as many have stated, Nintendo again proves to be wizards at managing file size.
I was on the fence about this game, until I read Polygon's preview article earlier today.

Now I'm ALL IN on this game. I'm excited!
I don't like sports in real life or in games...but like every kid of the 90's, I played the crap out of NBA Jam so this is oddly tempting to me...
@Fred13 Your first sentence made me say "aww no" to myself, your second sentence made me say "yesss".
I'm probably going to get this one. Still drag NBA Jam out to play occasionally so this makes sense.
And Nintendo thought 32 GB was enough. Ridiculous.
How does this game take more than MK8 Deluxe?!
I still play some of the newer NBA Jam on xbox so I don't know if it's worth getting for me but it does look cool and portability is a plus. Also the "new" NBA Jam (2010?) released on Wii as well for any of you with a Wii and no PS3 or 360 looking for some NBA Jam action.
These are good caricatures, but the facial animation leaves a lot to be desired.
They aren't REALLY FEELIN' IT out there on the court.
For people asking how this game is bigger than MK8 Deluxe, it's likely down to textures. Nintendo are much more conservative in their use of texture space for both beauty passes and effect layers than most larger developers.
@dok5555555 1990s NBA jam is where this game came from
Day 1
@DickeyWord I really hope we get a lot of weird players like back then. Remember Bill Clinton as a player lol.
Will it have online when released?
Well, Nintendo should put up classes on how to compress games, because I'm amazed it takes up more space than Mario Kart 8.
Wouldn't be a Damien article without implying something we should be upset about.
I'm not a sports fan, but I love crazy sports games (may not be into sports now, but as a kid I loved them so there's always that connection I guess).
I'm gonna give FIFA and NBA 2K18 a go this year. It's been probably about 15 years since I've played a real, actual, serious sports game on a console. Think it was... EA Sports NHL 2002 back on the PS2? Sounds right..
Maybe it's time to stop writing them off automatically and actually give them a fair chance for once. Although I'm not down with the roster updates so if I buy these games they'll last me several years.
@Zingo It will, online play with friends and online tournaments.
If it is that large, it should have a retail version. Downloading a file that big would be a nightmare for me since my internet connection sucks.
No retail?
I really hope this game is good.
@Fbigabig I know, it's crazy that Mario Galaxy was only like 1.2GB. And the same can go for power consumption with BotW on Switch running at 16 watts. Compared to your PS4 running 150+.
@UNSOLUTEDSALT I hate to break it to you, but you're not out of the woods yet. Mario Cart 8 deluxe is still available! Are you going to be able to continue skipping it for the foreseeable future?
that's a lot bigger file size than i thought but im super excited for this. i love basketball but as far as videogames i only enjoy them when they're over the top and silly. and $20 is a fantastic price. day 1
I'll keep tabs on this! Had no idea.
This looks awesome! I remember having a lot of fun with NFL Blitz on the N64. I would love to see that get the same treatment.
Hope it's decent all around. That's a pretty nice price and I haven't played an NBA Jam type game in almost 20 years (Last one I played was NBA Hangtime for the N64. Never played Street or any other successor)
i'm not much of an NBA fan. but i'm interested in seeing where this could go... hopefully the reviews are good!
Next week already?
Oke will be buying it for sure, love the style and humor.
Will wait for the reviews, though I'm pretty jacked about playing some NBA Jam on the Switch
@alasdair91 actually, if you were to purchase this, you'd be giving your money to Saber Interactive.
@JaxonH are you giving FIFA and 2K a go this year only because they're both on Switch? Curious to know.
That's ridiculously large for a Switch game without a physical retail release. I think they should reconsider and release a physical version exclusively for the Switch. Otherwise, I'll have to pass. That amount of storage is an extra AU$7 or so on top of the cost of the game. No thanks.
The only way I'll consider biting on a digital version is if it gets rave reviews...
I can't stand basketball as a sport but I like playing one on one or two on two in reality. Played the hell out of Jam.

Meanwhile in the UK. ....
It looks quite good... it won't be Day 1 but I will definitely watch for reviews and maybe some day I buy it ^^"
Day 1 for me...surprised at how many arcade sports fans we have here. Can't wait to team Shaq with Spud Webb!
