One of the welcome (and rather odd) additions to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was that of shield surfing, wherein you can ride any shield in your inventory down any slope for some radical boarding action. It's admittedly an easily forgotten feature with the breadth of things to do in the game, but it can be fun every once in a while to climb a particularly high mountain and just see how far you can make it down on a shield.
Amusingly enough, a YouTuber named Helix Snake was trying to do this earlier on a pot lid—one of the worst shields in the game—and got a bit more than they bargained for. After the shield breaks quickly, Link is sent on a painful tumble down the mountain for about a full thirty seconds—as his otherwise fatal wounds are repeatedly healed automatically by fairies in his inventory—before meeting a watery death at the very bottom. It's a fascinating watch to be sure, and stands as a reminder of how amusingly unforgiving the game can occasionally be.
What do you think? Have you mastered the art of shield surfing? What's the most ridiculous death you've suffered in Hyrule? Drop us a comment in the section below.

What a fall though xD My most unlucky moment was when I rode the Lord of the Mountain into a circle of weapons I had dropped... And a thunderstorm started.
That's funny, I can't think where it is he's falling? I'd love to shield surf down that. There's a mountain near to Rito that's great for shield surfing. The one where you race that guy to the top,I forget the name.
@SwitchVogel Not sure if you're aware but the Wonderboy article posted earlier won't open.
That last hit was brutal.
Complete rip-off of Hot Rod!

Must-see film.
Lol, I saw this yesterday morning!
I saw this yesterday! Totally beats anything in PBG's "50 Ways to Die" video. I think my most memorable death was right at the beginning of the game, trying to figure out how to get off the Great Plateau Tower.
Zelda: Link, only you can defeat Calamity Ganon and bring peace to Hyrule once again!
Link: -immediately falls off a tower to his death, Game Over-
Zelda: Welp.
Lol: Poor Link! Now its just waiting for a big montage with Jackass theme music. Its gonna happen!
By the way: Not a death, but the strangest thing that happened to me was a exploding vase in Kakariko village. Why did it explode? Just because I picked it up and it hit the pretty low roof of a building?
@OorWullie Yeah, we're looking into it. A few pages aren't loading right.
@TheLobster I refuse to play the game around my girlfriend following the verbal abuse for the number of times I fell off that tower before finding the ladder down.
Ouch, Poor Link. XD
@gcunit Which in itself is a complete rip-off of Footloose's Warehouse Dance Scene

Nice to see that he went on a nice trip! I certainly FELL for its scenery!
"before meeting a watery death at the very bottom"
To be fair, he died before he hit the water.
That was epic! Down, down, down... Stupid he burnt the pot lid before sledding; that's why it broke. In practice, pot lids last just as long as a good shield so why waste your good armor? And as a bonus, he likely regained all those poor fairies after the fall.
That was ruthless right there!
@RupeeClock Indeed, a watery death has blue "game over" text, and electrocution has yellow text, just like in real life.
I keep pulling out my bomb arrows and having them instantly blow up and kill me around Death Mountain lol
Seen it and I've had similar happen to me. The thing is you try not to do that. We could all probably replicate that if we had a death wish.
Omg I just finally found the last Great fairy. If anybody else found all four. Do they do what I think they did to Link?
@gcunit Hot Rod was funny! Link needs a fake mustache armor now.
It reminds me of Homer Simpson jumping the gorge...
lol
@OorWullie This is in the Gerudo Highlands, between Vatorsa Snowfield and Laparoh Mesa.
@gcunit I love that movie, and that scene in particular.
@Snader I think you don't understand the difference between a ripoff and a parody.
@liljmoore Yup. Took him to the depths and back again.
Funny, but seriously, press "-" and teleport somewhere.
@liljmoore Some form of "Death by Snu-snu!"
LMAO!!
@nab1
So that was how link died and Finally wakes up after a 100 years sleep lol!
One or two more fairies and the mad man would have lived to tell the story of this fall.
Reminds me of trying to do that falling from a certain height achievement in World of Warcraft... before I got the neat slow fall ability.
Damn son!.. O.o Link surely broke all his bones!
Brutal
He obviously did that on purpose.
@Jaxad0127 Cheers,I was in the Gerudo Highlands just the other day too.
Didn't actually realise you could still take damage from rolling down a hill whilst hurt! I usually jump straight back to my feet.
