In The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Link is more of a living, breathing character. He always has been, of course, but in the upcoming Switch / Wii U title you need to manage his clothing and diet to keep him healthy and ready for the environment. You'll need to catch, cook and prepare food to get through the challenge.
It turns out that the 30th Anniversary Legend of Zelda amiibo, which are out now, help with this. Nintendo used its Tumblr page - because it's down with the kids y'all - to show off how the amiibo help. They deliver useful items (probably limited to once a day, but Nintendo hasn't specified that yet) that simply fall from the sky.
Each [amiibo] will offer random items you can use in the game when used with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Legend has it, you may even receive a treasure chest with a rare item if you're lucky?!
- 8-bit Link will reward you with a random number of barrels. You might find rupees inside too!
- Ocarina of Time Link will reward you with a random amount of meat.
- Toon Link will reward you with a random amount of fish.
- Wind Waker Zelda will reward you with a random selection of plants.
It seems like a useful (and simple) way to support the figures in the game. Breath of the Wild will also have its own amiibo range that will possibly do more, while Wolf Link (from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD) will bring the character into the world as an assistant, too.
Let us know what you think of this amiibo support in the comments.
With thanks to Benson for the heads up.

The SCamiibo look nice though the rewards seem a bit measly(if they were better I'd complain more, so I guess Nintendo can't win). Posted the animated gifs in the forums last night. Still won't be buying them though as I refuse to further support this scam.
I wonder do they actually fall from the sky or maybe that bird plane will drop them off.
Hmm that's really simple. But ok. The Wolf Link function is still the best use of amiibo so far.
That's a disappointing use of the amiibo frankly, they just give you an advantage in the game without actually implementing interesting functionality based on the figurine.
There's still the BotW amiibo though.
@Janus1986 @RupeeClock @NintyFan I think of companion Wolf Link more as a reward for playing Twilight Princess HD, hence why it's more remarkable than what the 30th Anniversary amiibo will do. Who knows, these resources might not be so easy to come by in the game, and until we know just what these "rare items" are and how rare they are, it's much too early to say whether or not these amiibo will be incredibly useful.
Well, at least Wolf Link amiibo still useful for ACNL Welcome Amiibo to get Wolf Link as itself.
While this might be the most exciting way for Amiibos to be used, I sure can't complain too much about OOT Link giving me meat as I was thinking about being a bit of a pacifist in BOTW and were thinking about getting OOT before this anyway ^^.
So yeah, can't complain too much I suppose :+).
Hmmmm wonder if Gannon does anything....
Well could be worse, but I am dissappointed at the rewards, Fish? Really? At least the Amiibo themselves are really nice, but I feel a little sad that I bought the entire set. Though to be fair if the rewards were any more complex everyone would be complaining :/
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I feel for you man, I know you want the game, but you hate amiibo, that's gotta suck. These seem fairly useless, but 3 more to go. I'm not a huge fan - I like the idea, implementation is total fail - but I want Wolf Link for the wolf companion, but I've already played TP, don't need it again. Though that border collie, I think it was, might play the same purpose, making Wolf Link just an unnecessary skin, and I can live with that. Oh, digging the plane drop idea, but that might not show up until 15 hours into the game. I suppose up until then they could just show them landing and later on show the plane drop but that sounds like too much work for Nintendo.
Does anybody else think the 30th anniversary Zelda amiibo coming out NOW is a little odd seeing as how they are toys-to-life figures but they won't be bringing anything to life for at least another 3 months, maybe 6, who knows? I'd prefer Nintendo focus on what the amiibo do now, there are several Zelda games on Wii U and 3DS - WW HD, TP HD, ALBW, TFH - that these should do something in as Nintendo likes promoting the multi-game nature of amiibo being superior to other toys-to-life brands. There is no new Zelda game this holiday, why bring these out now. And why bring them out the Friday after BF?
I wonder if the Wolf Link amiibo would do anything in Breath of the Wild if you didn't use it in Twilight Princess (I found mine preowned).
@Razzmatazz I'd say Ganondorf will probably function the same way as he does in Twilight Princess HD, causing you to take x2 the normal damage.
Great, now people can stop complaining about having to buy an amiibo to play the game like when Twilight Princess HD was announced.
Well, I was considering getting Ocarina of Time Link. At least now I know he'll have some sort of functionality, though it's small.
Can't complain about free meat, though.
@rjejr agreed on the strange timing of these amiibo! Simply makes no sense having an interactive toy that doesn't interact with anything yet. I'm tempted to say that this undermines their whole argument that they are 'not collectibles but an interactive tool for getting the most out of games'......
I'm with @SLIGEACH_EIRE on this, the amiibo was the only thing giving Nintendo a decent margin of profit at one point so the business planning were throwing them onto the market quicker than the devs could think of ways to make use of them in game. Devaluing , imo, the entire market that the product was based on in the process by flooding the market with a demand for a product people people didn't know how/why to use gaming wise. (Possibly even causing the cancellation of skylanders/infinity, but this could just be the fad ending?)
Furthermore, I'm actually getting a little suspicious of the manufacturing/ethics process of Nintendo. The constant under supply and hype demand of their products is strange to the extreme. I have to fight the thought that they engineer short supply (Wii/smash pad/amiibo/nes mini etc..) in order to magnify their sales opportunities and create global demand beyond the relevance of the product. Short supply of a heavily demanded product is just poor business sence otherwise!?!
@Tyranexx I'll admit, after seeing wolk link amiibo, I really want to buy one. Plus, I can agree, free food is the best, especially if it's airmail
@rjejr Though I can't test it, I think the Toon Zelda amiibo does do something that other amiibo don't do as in give high star weapons for Toon Zelda in Hyrule Warriors and Hyrule Warriors Legends (Nintendo UK's still sending out promotional emails for DLC even over a month after launch).
The collector in me loves amiibo and wishes that I could have all of them (at least the Smash Bro series ones). The gamer in me likes the idea of being able to use them for different purposes in multiple games. The responsible adult in me does not like spending money on them because there are so many more useful things my money can go toward, even thought they are cool decorations I don't really care to decorate and they uses they have in current games rarely justifies having them around. As a result I have a fair number in my house (mostly given to me or my kids as gifts) and I usually look at them in stores haunted by a desire to both buy them and not buy them. Thanks Nintendo!
I know it is a scam, but I would have been willing to pay $20 for an Amiibo that opened up a new dungeon or area of the world. Kind of makes the DLC feel of Amiibo at least make sense and then the figure is the bonus. For example you could pay $20 for the new dungeon digitally or go to your store and pay $20 and get a free Amiibo figure.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
Got to love your "nintendo sux" mentality. Good amiibo? Why can't I have nice things??? Bad amiibo? Well of course. Amiibo sucks anyway.
I already bought all 4 amiibo. Quite happy with the price. This also seems like a nice little bonus and if it is once per day it isn't broken. It also makes Wolf Link more valuable as you have to "raise" it in TP to be better than average anyway.
Can't wait for this game 😃
While I glad that they're not locking away major things like dungeons to the amiibo DLC, this use does seem a bit lame.
Okay time to get crap piled on me.
I like the implementation.
Wolf Link helps you hunt. These will, assumingly once per day, give you food items to alleviate the stress of hunting for recovery and ingredients. They can also give you rare items.
So if you go into a day with limited inventory or need very quick preperation, scan an amiibo.
This is a justified aspect of the game design that allows a user to, if they have the prerogative, take a quicker path into the action. However, its also a thing that is not needed. You can go hunt after all, even if you own the figures.
The amiibo seen to be focused on making the new aspects to the series more dynamic to auit a range of players. Many wont enjoy hunting and scouring for weaponry for instance.
Does it suck its behind what many would call a useless figurine that acts as a paywall? Depends if you want the figurine or the convenience. In the modern industry this would be 3.99 per use without the figure on your desk looking pretty. Here its 10.99 until the figure dies in 20 years and looks pretty on your desk.
As an alternative ro what the industry expects to be done and now actively teaches as a way to make as much money as possible, Ill take it. As a way to make the game more accessible for younguns ill also take it. Does it suck you have to pay for it? Its down to the individual I am afraid .
If Figurine amiibo can be squished into Card amiibo (Just like HHD amiibo card) it will cost cheaper and easy to bring / stored.
@ULTRA-64 @Grumblevolcano Poor timing, poor implementation, poor marketing. You can read my rant here for that last one. Post #50 at the end.
These did just come out yesterday, right? Along w/ the new AC:NL cards. Bill Trinnen tweeted about those.
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2016/12/toys_r_us_expecting_fresh_nes_classic_mini_stock_this_weekend
I guess this would be good for the impatient people out there that just want to experience the story. Personally, I think the hunting and gathering will really help set the mood, so I wouldn't want to just skip through that aspect of the game.
Ganon amiibo confirmed to spawn Ganondorf in the sky, and drop the People's Elbow on Link. Though not immediately, randomly within the day's play session because i don't know. Seems useful though.
It would be cool if the dropped items could damage enemies. If would do an amiibo-only run if that were the case.
@Dakt Well that logic stopped in June 2016 when Kirby Planet Robobot had Smash Kirby get Kirby's Smash moveset as a power meanwhile Kirby Kirby get UFO power.
@rjejr The AC amiibo makes sense because of the ACNL update. As for the Zelda amiibo, I still agree but think the situation is not that far off the Falco logic of November 2015. If you remember back then, Falco was meant to launch alongside Star Fox Zero in November 2015 but Star Fox Zero got delayed to April meanwhile the amiibo stayed in November because of Smash.
As for your comment in the thread you linked, maybe the retailers think promoting Nintendo stuff for Christmas may harm Switch?
I personally don't see the problem with this. I mean, nobody is forcing you to buy the amiibo's, they are simply there for such. I know a lot of people who simply collect the amiibo's. I mean, I have a set I use for Hyrule Warriors Legends, but apart from that, they're not much more than Nintendo Paraphernalia. I don't see why everyone is making such a big fuss over the amiibo. Yes, Nintendo launched them as a last resort to try and fix the deficit the Wii U caused on launch, but all in all, they look nice and remind us of fonder times we had as children. Come on guys, lighten up. It's Nintendo for Iwata's sake. They've been bringing us smiles for years.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE You are correct; with some people Nintendo can't win. Especially people who believe that offering a product for purchase is a scam.
@rjejr I don't think it's poor marketing than it is poor time management on Nintendo's part. I'm thinking they were thinking BotW would be finished by now. In Zelda's 30th anniversary year no less. Though Nintendo still wanted to release something more than TPHD this year.
All in all, we got an amiibo from every major Zelda style this year (Wolf Link, Original Link, Toon Link and OoT Link) the only Zelda amiibo we didn't get was SS Link, which you could argue we'll get with the BotW amiibo. If you look at it from that angle, the odd amiibo appearance makes a little more sense.
Please explain to me how something is a scam that can be completely ignored and you aren't forced or required to purchase or has absolutely no bearing on playing and completing the game whatsoever?
@Moi you know...that idea for the Ganondorf amiibo is...actually pretty fun. Just a random elbow drop or randy orton style move for lols. Dont even have it do damage just be visual.
I can live with this. Free in game food is a perk. I would have liked to see more cool stuff like Link Wolf, but thats pretty epic by itself!
@BLP Exactly.
Once again, I wasn't going to buy them, I saw them in the story and they look way better in person, and I picked them up. Thing is, I did this thinking they wouldn't add any special functionality beyond being a link and zelda figurine. I thought maybe there would be something. This is just a nice, nice bonus.
It's actually pretty fun and Zelda-quirky to boot. If you don't want a nice little figurine amiibo isn't a good value. If you like them, it is. I do think that there should be time-delayed card versions of all figurine amiibo to unlock stuff in games with something less cumbersome. Mabye they'll still do that this generation, especially to go along with the portable nature of Switch (though 3DS didn't convince them to do it.)
The first gif amuses me.
@Ed_Fairway: It'll be cloudy with a chance of meat[bombs].
@Moi Ganon Uyger, of The Young Gerudo fame?
I like the function of the amiibo, I like the collector part of it and I like that they are not necessary., I commend Nintendo they have found a middle ground where its up to the fan of the series if you want them or not ., I do gotta say those Breath of the Wild amiibo look awesome though.
@Captain_Gonru Oh yeah, the big move. May have slipped my mind.
Trinnen tweet on the AC cards, so you don't think I'm lieing.
https://twitter.com/trintran/status/804475255473336320
Trinnen tweet on why Nintneod had no money for flyer ads this week, airfare for Miyamato. (Hopefully in reality Apple covered it.)
https://twitter.com/trintran/status/804527467654328320
I'm expecting a huge SMR blitz any day now. How they're going artificially constrain stock on a digital download I still don't know. $10 won't be a deterrent to iOS cultists though. 2 Starbucks to be the first on their block to own a piece of Nintnedo soul's. They probably won't even play the game, they'll just buy it in case anybody asks if they did. Easier to say "Yes" then explain the "no".
@Sir_JBizzle I'm sure BotW was supposed to be out now. Back when they said "2015" they meant now, back when they said "2016" they meant now. Back when they planned on releasing it on Switch they meant for Switch to be out now w/ BotW on it, same time frame as TP on Gamecube and Wii. But BotW isn't out now, the amiibo are. So I get why the amiibo were planned for now, and I even understand why they released them now, so they don't overrun store shelves next to the 3 BotW models. But as a toys-to-life NFC amiibo they aren't doing a very good job of explaining what game they come to life in now. It shouldn't be up to Grumblevolcano to explain it to people. Promote what they do now first, promote BotW usage when that game actually releases. In May, or June, or March in some alternate universe.
@Grumblevolcano "As for your comment in the thread you linked, maybe the retailers think promoting Nintendo stuff for Christmas may harm Switch?"
Promoting Sun & Moon, or these Zelda amiibo, or the AC cards, or SMM for 3DS isn't going to hurt Switch. NES Mini should be in stock and promoted. Nintendo just released SMM3DS, AC cards and 4 Zelda amiibo this past Friday Dec 2 yet none of them are in the ads. Why release them at all?
Is it bad that my first thought wasn't about all the goodies?
Step 1: Summon airdrop near a boss fight.
Step 2: Grab Magnesis Rune
Step 3: Beat boss senseless with treasure chest
But seriously, those are some pretty good amiibo rewards. Okay, maybe not what most people were hoping for, but it is exactly what I was hoping for from Amiibo functionality. After all, given all the different recipes we can make, ingredients will be in short supply quite fast.
Bought TPHD just to level up the Wolf Link for this game. Hoping the BotW amiibo have more in-depth functionality.
Is anyone else ignoring most details about this game so it'll be more of a surprise later on when it releases? I haven't seen any footage of it since the E3 trailer.
How often can you use the amiibo? ... I might have missed it somewhere...
@Dakt "Does the functionality exist in the Smash series amiibo?"
That's my question about the Toon Link amiibo. Other than that, I don't care since I only own that one right now.
I'm very glad that these were easy to find, I bought the 8-bit Link and the OoT Link. I can't wait until BotW comes out!
@Ryu_Niiyama I'm guessing once a day, but that's because I seem to recall that at E3 they said Wolf Link could be used once a day. Both my recollection and extrapolation could be wrong, so don't quote me on it unless you quote my extreme equivocation as well.
I have currently ALL the Zelda amiibo. Smash, Anniversary, and Wolf Link. Would I be able to use ALL of them uniquely?!!
@PanurgeJr works for me. I have all of the 30th anniversary amiibo anyway. I guess Link will be blessed by the goddesses and won't have to hunt in my play through.
@Captain_Gonru Supposedly no micro transactions at all, basically the old Doom model - download the full game, play the first part, pay to unlock the rest. Which, despite all the moaning and groaning about the price, is why it will do well. It's a 2D auto side-scrolling Mario game, so sort of the same as every 2D Mario game ever. It isn't an endless runner, it's an auto-runner with levels to beat using touch to jump. It's Super Mario, exclusively on Apple hardware. The 2nd best game Nintendo is putting out this holiday after S&M. I think Miyamoto at the NYC Apple store on Thursday will be the beginning of the marketing period. Though with all those "let me know" notifications I'm not sure how much they need. I may need to stop by an Apple store to see if they have a big Mario poster on the wall. I think there are a couple in the malls near me.
http://toucharcade.com/2016/10/14/super-mario-run-20-million-notified/
Can these amiibos not just be figures with benefits? By this mentality, all toys and collectibles are scams.
@Captain_Gonru So have you accepted that Switch will work with amibo now? I'm hoping that Wolf Link amiibo was just a skin for the border collie so I don't need the amiibo, I'm fine w/ a dog, don't need a Wolf Link skin.
Yes, SMR is a "timed" exclusive, but nobody has mentioned the time frame yet. The Pokemon trading card game was on iOS about 18 months before Android. I don't think Apple would settle for anything less than 1 year.

@Captain_Gonru Sorry, I see my madness is wearing off on you. I had an argument w/ some woman and all her followers on Twitter last night about my hatred of game delays - they were all saying it's no big deal - and then I just went to bed in the middle of arguing. So now I need to wean myself off of twitter and here.
Good news, TRU ad had 4 Nintendo sightings today, front page for S&M, some Pokémon toys, 3DS hardware and Wii U and 3DS games. Had the ad been in the paper yesterday with the rest of them it would have saved me a rant.
You keeping up w/ the CW shows? Watched my first ever episode of SG, will watch the other 3 this week. My wife and I are glad it's another dimension so we don't have to watch it. Though I would if I knew they had hot women making out every week.
Nice little extras which could help you out in certain situations but I do hope Nintendo get more of these Amiibos back in stock.
@Captain_Gonru Don't get too excited for the SG crossover. I'm giving this to you as a spoiler b/c it's not a big deal. But after watching Flash last night my wife said - "Why did we even bother watching SG, it's the same 10 seconds." Yes, the 10 second x-over scene from SG was reshown in Flash. My quick response "Well I did get to watch 2 girls make-out." She just laughed.
Didn't know you were collecting those new Zelda amiibo. My kids and I still have no use for them. It's possible that w/ over 200 toys to life we're just burned out. I may need to get Goonies Lego D though, and my kid wan'ts the Sonic level set. And that BotW Guardian, b/c it's so cool, but it really has nothing to do w/ Nintendo per se, it's just cool. And articulated. Good luck to all of us finding that one, I'm thinking 1 per store max.
@Captain_Gonru I'm really not a big fan of DI. I bought DI2 b/c it was bundled w/ a PS3 2 years ago back when I was looking for a streaming device for my 39" non-smart bedroom Tv. So I kept the PS3, gave my kids the game, it was $170 for the bundle so it worked out. My wife and I played the original SW trilogy set and it was sort of fun but very short. We started the PotC set and meant to get to it but never did. Got the free download of DI1 on Wii U and bought a lot of pieces, my kid and I played toy Story, that was good, and The Lone Ranger was ok, basically the toy box from Toy Story 3 game. All the Marvel stuff is kind of boring. Wanted to play GotG but never did. 4 player battle arena seemed ok, I've been meaning to play the story mode of that.
So, I'd recommend skip it and just buy all the Lego games instead - Avengers and Marvel. Same games w/o the toys. A few of them are on Wii U now for $13. Well maybe that was last week.
And it's not like I don't like toys-to-life, we have about 100 Skylanders, I like those games, though I've only played the 2nd but I watch my kids play alot. And Lego D is fun, very good use of the portal colors. In order I'd go Lego D, Skyladers, DI. DI only if you want to create, as it's the only one that does that.
Apologies if I was supposed to talk you into it, not out of it. And all the abbreviations.
I haven't seen Arrow or Legends yet, but Arrow looks really good - coming attractions after Flash, and I think they'll really use Legends to tie it all up, though that's just a guess. Then I hope they take a break until after the holidays so I can watch all 10 episodes of Westworld w/ my wife. Avoiding spoilers is killing me. I've seen episode 1 w/o her. Better she waste my time than hers if it isn't any good.
@Captain_Gonru I don't see how it's possible Legends could be worse than last season, it was so bad. Well losing Snart killed it for me anyway, that guy was such a cool cat.
I bought Mr T for Lego D and played the hub world, it was ok but several funny moments of dialog made it worth it.
When are you moving, I thought you'd be done by now. And who moves in December, your lease up or something? My wife just asked me yesterday when we were decorating for Christmas and Hanukkah, I can't imagine trying to move this time of year, shopping and wrapping is a full time job for me.
Gonna go watch Arrow, I'll keep it to myself. Then Legends tomorrow. Let me know when you catch up. No rush, I know packing and moving is nuts.
@Captain_Gonru At the rate your moving it will be time to start moving out of the new place before you finish moving in. I bet your wife makes that joke all the time.
If you get Lego D on Wii U make sure you have space for all of the background downloads. Just recently I deleted a whole bunch of stuff off of my external HDD and my thumbdrive I've been playing off of b/c I had less than 5GB free on each and Lego D just added 4GB. I think they add all the new stuff before each new set comes out so as soon as you put a new piece on it works. Of course I suppose that wouldn't happen if I didn't have the Wii U set to auto-update.
Never read any Green Arrow comics so I don't have any preconceived notions about any of them. I'm just enjoying this season b/c it's the last of the flashbacks to his 5 year island sojourn and I want to see how they wrap it up. And I like Dolph Lundgren.
@Captain_Gonru Wow, you are such a geek.
That's how I was w/ Marvel back in 80's, Hulk and X-Men, but my fried brain could hardly remember anything now. Just that Jean Grey should have stayed dead and Alpha Flight was the best team ever. I'm surprised you are even able to watch the shows w/ that much knowledge. I was practically screaming at the screen during Hobbit 2 and 3 to make it stop. 1/3 of 2 and 2/3 of 3 don't even exist. Fortunately they were at least enjoyable in their own right.
@Captain_Gonru "I had to stop watching Gotham"
I could never bring myself to watch it. Seemed like watching the "Titanic" movie but then walking out before the ship hits the iceberg.
I like a little origin story in my movies and tv shows, Smallville was good for a few seasons before everybody turned 25 from 18 over a summer, but I don't want to spend years watching Penguin grow up. Arrow has done a good job of intertwining the 5 year backstory of Arrow w/ the current day. If somebody told me I had to watch him on (and off) an island for 5 seasons before he was rescued I wouldn't have.
@Captain_Gonru "I wonder if next season will be season one flashbacks."
Yeah, I joke about that w/ my wife too. I would like to go back and watch all of those "bratva" episodes over again. First season had an auto mechanics garage, and a few seasons ago he did something to piss them all off and effectively get himself ostracized. Though I'll probably just read up on it on Wiki.
I watched Legends last night. Only Flash and Arrow are new this week before their "mid-season finales" so you'll have time to catch up whenever you finish moving before all 4 start back up whenever.
@JohnBlackstar I like that idea, I personally do not think that the Smash Bros Amiibo actually "do" anything other than look cool together on shelf ... but I really like the idea of having DLC with the figures. Maybe you should suggest it to Nintendo!
Getting resources without effort. In a way it's cheating. I like the Wolf Link Amiibo better. I'm currently grinding the Cave of Shadows in TP to finish with the highest amount of hearts.
